  • That Probe scared me when I was a child.

  • Doesn't anyone at all have a video of Admiral Kirk's trial and demotion to Captain? I loved it when the federation president said "Captain Spock, you do not stand accused" to which Spock replies "Mr President...I stand with my shipmates."

  • aww, the recap cut out the whole bit about McCoy carrying around Spock's soul - that was the most entertaining part of III!

  • Love this film....this introduction is in the old 700mb Avi encode I have of it....

  • It's nice to see this introduction for the movie.

  • I rented this movie a few months back, and the intro flashback sequence wasn't on the DVD! What gives?

  • @MaximumMadnessStixon That Introduction/flashback scene was only seen in Europe when the film had premiered there. We here in the states never saw this intro. This should have been included as deleted scenes when the film came to DVD / Blu-ray.

  • added to favorites, subscribed, and liked. Well done my good friend. Well done. Would like to see an upload of the scene after the hospital chase to before the trial if possible. Thanks.

  • Now I have to watch this film tonight, no way around it. Resistance is futile, as they say...

  • 3:13 Very fitting and moving. And no doubt true

  • *Sees Challenger dedication*

    *Stands & salutes*

  • ST IV was, without a doubt, the HAPPIEST Star Trek movie I have ever seen !! Even with the past destruction of the Enterprise & the Earth endangered by that strange alien probe endeavoring to contact whales.

I wish they'd show it more on cable.

  • errr, why is the Vulcan symbol in the background of the ceremony the same as that of the Borg?

  • Finally i've been waiting watch this opening in a long while, shame it's not included on the dvds. has it been restored for the Blu-ray release?

  • I'm not saying anything, but sections of the overture bear a remarkable similarity to Wagner's Meistersinger.

  • @SuperTrekNerd

and on the soundtrack of TSFS, and entire section is stolen from Prokofiev.

  • This is Search for spock...

  • Leonard Nimoy just announced he is retiring from acting.

  • @TIPTON340 Don't remind me. I want to cry now. *sniffle*

  • @TIPTON340 According to his Twitter he's coming back this season for another round of Fringe. So who knows.

  • I like the classic star trek films, back when William Shatner was Kirk, and not a living parod of himself...

  • einfach nur geil ich liebe Star Trek

  • For those that don't know, this intro was only included in the European theatrical release because STIII did so poorly over there that hardly anybody saw it, so this was meant to "clue in" the audience so they'd know just how the movies were connected.

  • @TexasLibra It was also in the for TV version here in Australia not sure about elsewhere.

  • "In the 23rd century"

You can tell Nicholas Meyer is back ^^

  • Interesting I had never seen this before. This, I suppose, was to clarify things for the larger audience that was probably unaware of the precluding events. This movie was meant for larger audiences and because of it was the highest grossing film until recently.

  • One problem with this version is while the introduction is great, it should have been put after the Challenger dedication & Paramount logo.

So it would be: dedication, logo, introduction, main credits.

    Just my opinion....

  • SnapeSoul:

    "Why would you do this?"

    "Because I LOVE you, Spock"

I believe that's exactly what he said... that's the only logical way to interpret "because the needs of the one, outweigh the needs of the many" in my mind...

    Especially when you add:

"But at what cost? Your ship? Your career?"

"If I hadnt tried, the cost would have been my soul"

    :-)

  • Lol great video, but saying "I don't own" won't do anything if paramount wants to kill the video :(

  • It pisses me off that in the US, this excellent introduction to the Voyage Home wasnt used and was for European audiences, it also highlights Star Treks II III and this film as a Trilogy with IV being the last film to have anything to do with incidents tied to the last two. It was a great entertaining film, but II and III were far superior.

  • I agree.....U.S. audiences should have seen this intro when the film came out.

I think that II, III, and IV are the best of the original cast.

  • I like this theme, it has a more playfull, confident feel. It fits the mood of the film.

  • Maravilha bons tempos pena que acabou.

  • You forgot enterprise-c in Star Trek TNG Yerterday's Enterprise.

  • The Enterprise-C was destroyed by the Romulans not the Klingons.

  • the odd thing is, 2 enterprise destroyed by the klingons. the oringal enterprise, yep! the enterprise d Yep!

  • one thing u do not do in star trek dont destroy the enterprise by self destruct the 1701 died of a senseless death

  • Nah... she died as she lived... saving her crew.

That was a far better death than the contrived destruction of Enterprise D.

Gotta admit I teared up watching her get destroyed... (and applauded when the D got destroyed).

  • you talken to me FILTHY VERMIN!!!!!!!!!

  • died as she lived right?

  • Remember the Enterprise was to be decommissed in Star Trek III. Better for her to be destroyed on a mission than to have her broken up.

  • but as old as she was i would bypass to keep her alive and keep bypassing all systems to were she would still ive if it were in my hands the enterprise was

  • Very true... she died as she lived... protecting her crew.

  • Best Star Trek movie, though the first movie had the best warp speed

  • Good to see someone else say so! I 100% agree. Can't stand that score.

  • Leonard Nimoy is the MAN!!

  • Great score.

  • Definitely one of my favorites from Star Trek. Sounds like European Christmas music to me. :)

  • i like how they dedicate the film to the challenger crew. real nice touch imo

  • Klingon bird of prey...Excellent

  • I will never forget the atmosphere in the packed cinema when I saw this as a 15 year old.Everyone was on their feet cheering and hugging when the new Enterprise appeared.Real old school adventure!

  • I think the intro was for the Forgein (outside of United States) markets only.

  • Yeah, because ST3 was direct to video release only in certain areas they made this re-cap in ST4 for those areas.

  • The prologue is missing in some version i've seen which is same because i think i work wells.

  • One of the best musical scores ever for a move IMHO. Especially in the ending credits... quite fitting as the enterprise warps out...

  • Agreed! The music fits this wonderful moment to perfection.

  • Kaiokken, Leonard Rosenman was obviously a man who genuinely loved doing what he did. There's a real integrity to his music and while I don't think he was as talented as some of his peers, I always admire his work.

Star Trek IV is a delightful score.

  • Definatly the best music. I hope the new movie reinvigorates the franchise.

  • they changed her it's a new ship bridge and uniforms

  • whole movie please!

  • no its not no no no no no hes a volcan and logic says the needs of the many out way the needs of the few so he sacrificed himself to save the other 400 ppl on the enterprise

  • There where not 400 people on board!

The enterprise carriewd 432 crew when fully manned. I think the Enterprise had around 350 people on baord as she would not have been fully manned for a cadet ship.

  • cant wait for the new movie.they just posted the pics of the cast =))

  • I have noticed that I am starting to like Star Trek TMP, II and VI more than this one. When IV first came out I loved it, now I think it looks the most dated of all the movies I suppose because it actually shows real 1986 Earth. I guess I like it best when Star Trek sticks to its roots. Anyone else feel this way?

  • lol I do see your point, however I understand that they made it look like that only because of the fact that is when it was made. So, I guess it is cheaper to just film the daily lives of people in 1986 as is rather than come up with a completely new look in a distant future from us.

  • Nah, I think of this as the fun movie. The cast and crew look like they had a good time filming it and the whole atmosphere reflects that. So many good one liners, so many memorable moments. So what if it's 1980's, would you have been happier if they got the whales from the 16th century? What a hysterical but expensive romp that would have been. To cut a long story short, I still love this film.

  • While you have a point about it looking dated, of course the whole promotional thing was when the film came out, they said they were coming back to "today," so that's probably part of it. As far as the roots, it is still a great Star Trek story and time travel was done before by the crew so I think it sticks to the Star Trek formula quite well. I love the movie and the lighthearted soundtrack I think, only underscores the fact that this film isn't as serious as the last two were.

  • Which Leonard Nimoy did on purpose. He felt that the last two made it so this one needed to be lighter.

  • The intro was for non treker cinema goers to clue them into the long chain of plot so they didn't feel left out and as a repriese for the fans to make sure they too were up to speed. Does anyone remember how expensive video tapes were at that time?

  • As a kid in England, in the 1980's i remember seeing this title on VHS for 80 pounds [160 US dollars]. They only wanted to sell to video rental stores and so thats why it was so pricey. It took a while for prices like £10 £15 'sell thru' to happen.

  • i have allways loathed the intro that they put on this. they stopped it after all mid 90's releases of it.

  • One Point Twenty Gigawatts!!!!

  • This would have been great if Kirk had said something like 'Previously on Star Trek...' at the beginning.

  • lol!!! yeah like jack bauer sayin previously on 24

  • i miss the old enterprise

  • I love how the cast & crew of Star Trek dedicated Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home to the men and women who lost their lives on the Challenger Space Shuttle (Spaceship Challenger) in 1986. It was a hard thing to watch at the time. I'm glad that there was a fine dedication to the crew. It speaks volumes about the cast & crew of Star Trek. My hat off to you. :)

  • oh, is this the one with the whales?

  • Yuppers

  • Kirk is talking too fast and it makes his voice too high.

  • Well, they're just trying to get the intro over and done with as soon as possible so they can start the film proper. Its basically a cinematic version of those "in last week's episode.." summaries for the benefit of those viewers who didn't watch Star Trek 3.

  • I know the premise. I own the movie. THIS video copy is playing too fast.

  • It's the 4% speedup from 24fps (film) to 25fps (PAL video).

  • All TOS were great...the new ones suck

  • One has to agree. All the new ones are either Star, or Trek, but none of them are "Star Trek" And two of those new ships have the engines in the wrong place!

  • This has got to be the best Star Trek movie and the music is excellent but will there be anymore of these great movies, one day maybe

  • This intro was recorded for Europe because of the unsuccessfulness of Star Trek III there.

  • Ah, that explains why it doesn't appear in some of the versions of the movie that appear on cable channels and video in the UK. These must have used the US version, which bears the main title :"STAR TREK IV: The Voyage Home". In the original UK release, the movie was titled "THE VOYAGE HOME (Star Trek IV)", presmably to broaden audience appeal to those who didn't watch Star Trek.

  • best trek theme song by far

  • Hmm, I have the DVD and this intro is not on it....

  • When was this intro recorded? Is it on any DVDs? The only copy I have is only a VHS tape.

  • My two Fave ST movies are Voyage Home and First Contact. Now, since I didn't see 3, this is great to see..

  • It's also my fav music and movie of all Trekmovies. 2 bad they made Generations, cuz no TNG movie (I think) is possible to bring the same effects as this one. The funniest thing (I think)was that they allowed that woman to come back to 23rd Cen instead of beaming her back to San Fran, but it was really the most (Il)Logical thing to do.

  • Thanks for posting this! This part wasn't in the cheap paramount VHS that Target sold ten years back so Im glad you let me know about it! This music, as well as the movie is my absolute favorite of the Treks.

  • That is very nice intro.. I loved this movie every since I first layed eyes on it. It has taken many years for me to fully come to grasp of it. even now it is the kind of movie that I have not fully came to grasp with.

I own it on DVD and yes it is legal. sitting with the other five ones so There for I have treks 1 - 6 now to obtain the other 4 is on my to do list.

  • I believe this music to be the most 'non-trek' of all the movies, however it is truly unique and much more emotional than the rest. IMO, this is one of the greatest science fiction films ever made.

  • Leonard Nimoy owns...singer, director, actor, photographer...is there anything this guy *can't* do?

  • The only thing he *can't* do is screw something up.

  • william shatner is a jack of all trades don't forget

  • @SnapeSoul Can't think of anything can you?

  • @SnapeSoul Well...he can't draw. LOL

Other than that, he can do EVERYTHING that an artist would want to do.

    He is the BEST!!!

  • @SnapeSoul Hey snape, you think you could rip just the Rear/front Audio channels of this?
