Funny thing is, if you look at Meltzer's old Wrestling Observer awards, Monsoon was often voted the worst announcer. Granted this was while Monsoon was still active and before we appreciated him even more in light of how awful announcing has gotten. But I never got the hate that the WO smarks had for him. Chalk it up to the usual general superiorist attitude the workrate douchebags have.
Jesse often used to refer to him as Gino when they called the matches. Funny thing is, I was watching a '77 WWWF show on the On Demand channel, and Gorilla showed up at the announcer's table and told McMahon that the WWF President had sanctioned a Texas Death Match between Backlund and Tor Kamata. Gorilla was still active as a wrestler at this time and the conversation they had made it seem like it was nothing out of the ordinary for Gorilla to act as a liasion like that. Anyone know the deal?
He was not the same after his son and WWF referee Joey Marella passed away. I remember he took off Wrestling Challenge for a week and the following week upon his return, it was evident in his voice that he was not the same man.
He was the cornerstone of the WWF not(e). When Vince bought the comapny from his dad one of the provisions was that Gorilla and I belive Vince Sr's other partners were given "Lifetime" Jobs in the company. Well at least that what was written in the death of WCW book written some years ago.
I get so choked up every time I watch this video. It's hard for me to not hold back tears when I think about my all-time favorite wrestling commentator. Thank you Gorilla for all the memories. I'm not ashamed to say that I love you, and that I miss the hell out of you. You were the greatest. There will never be another commentator like you. Nobody can ever take your place. RIP Gino.
Monsoon and Heenan's commentary made me laugh so hard at times. Sure, sometimes they completely ignored the match going on, but they were the rare exception that could pull that off. So entertaining.
@smoothpants ...............smooth......lets not argue over that right now. This is not about who the best wrestling commentator was and who wasn't the best. Just please watch the video and shut up ok? We can discuss this at a later time. Please......show Gorilla some respect.
Gorrila Moonson was the voice of my Childhood back in the 80's. Gorrila was the heart and soul of the WWF. He is up thier with JR on calling some of the most memorable mathces for the last 30 years in the WWF. Thier wont be another Gorrila Moonson. Thank u for making WWF great to watch back during the Mid 80's and early 90's. Brain and Gorrila was the best tag team Comentary team frontrunner for Jr and The King during the Attidude years
This still makes me very sad. Gorilla and Heenan were the best combo ever. The years they did that show Prime Time and of course their years of calling matches together. Such great memories that take me back to my childhood. It's a shame he left us so early at 62 and it's also a shame what happened to Bobby Heenan health wise.
I know a few people in the biz who had the opportunity to go to Gorilla's house in Willingboro, NJ. They all told me the same thing: nicest guy they ever met.
I grew up listening to Gorilla along with Jesse Ventura and Bobby Heenan. I will always remember, "This place has gone bananas" or "when he said "will you stop!" to Heenan. He is such a big part of the WWF's history and he has been sorely missed over the last 12 years.
Gorilla monsoon is the best commentator there ever was or ever will be an jr knows that why because he is the father of the wwf and wwe he was a father to not just the company but every new comer
Gorilla(along with Bobby Heenan) was my favourite commentator(and always will be) I still well up when I watch this, think this was one time Vince was genuine, you can tell in his voice and I think he loved Gorilla like we all did
Watching this tribute to Gorilla Monsoon sends chills up and down my spines. This is one of the classiest tributes I have seen to any wrestling commentator. RIP Gorilla. I miss you very much.
he made me fall in love with professional wrestling, and he's the reason why I continue to watch professional wrestling today. There will never be another announcer quite like Gorilla Monsoon. In my book he's the greatest wrestling commentator of all time.
I'm not taking anything away from Jim Ross as a commentator, but from a fan's perspective, he didn't have as much of an influence over me as Gorilla Monsoon did in terms of learning to appreciate what professional wrestling is all about. Gorilla Monsoon made me appreciate professional wrestling in ways that no other wrestling commentator could ever make me appreciate professional wrestling
Growing up in Brooklyn, New York as a wrestling fan, listening to Gorilla Monsoon call the PBP on Wrestling Challenge and Prime Time Wrestling every week made me fall in love with professional wrestling. Gorilla Monsoon taught me to never underestimate the importance of psychology during a match and to never think a move was pointless. No disrespect to Jim Ross, but personally Gorilla Monsoon will always be the greatest wrestling commentator ever in the history of professional wrestling.
I Remember Seeing This & I Cried. I Was Sad 2 See Him Grow. Even When My Mom Heard The News, She Was Even Sad. She Watched A Few TV Shows With Me While Gorilla & Heenan Did A Show. She Couldnt Stop Laughing. She Would Laugh So Hard, She Would Cry.
Gorillla: THE ELECTRICITY IS SO THICK YOU CAN CUT IT WITH A KNIFE!!!/THE CROWD IS GOING BANANAS!!/and when talking to bobby the god heenan: ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND!!!! i love this shit my youth was blessed with awesome =ness
I remember the Brain yelling to Monsoon that Flair was a 12 time champion but Monsoon simply yelled back at him "That just means he lost it that many times!!"
I know Gorilla's passing absoutely devasted Vince McMahon. I have heard people say that Gorilla was almost like a father to Vince. Also, Bobby Heenan was best friends with Gorilla. When he had his HOF speech and he said, "I wish Monsoon was here," I actually cried.
@DavidJ751990 very true. Bret Hart seems like a very selfish, it's all about me individual, Ric Flair's a cunt and a snob, and shawn michaels is a immature, disrespectful punk. if you want decency in wrestlers, go to guys like stone cold and undertaker. the point I made in my comment was that gorilla wasn't as good as everyone thinks, along with other "great ones" in the business. my comment was removed because of too many negative votes, I guess people have a hard time hearing the truth
@Deanobucko917 Hey, I never got a chance to read what you wrote and why. Could you please drop me a post. I'm curious because I've never heard a bad thing about Gorillia.
In my mind Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby The Brain Heenan no doubt the best play-by-play color commentators or broadcast journalist of all time call it what you want. When I heard of his passing a part of my childhood died!
Monsoon was great with Heenan and Ventura, but he had a rare talent as a wrestling commentator for being able to elevate every commentator he worked with whether it was Heenan, Ventura, Johnny Polo, Lord Alfred Hayes, Nick Bockwinkle or Dick Graham. He could take a great commentator and make them sound 10 times better than they already were, and he could take a mediocre commentator and elevate to them a position where they sounded liked they belonged calling the action with Gorilla.
When Gorilla passed away, part of my childhood went with him. I spent countless hours in front of the TV growing up, watching WWF and more times than not, it was always his voice or a show he co-hosted. It was rough seeing him the way he was at WMXV, and sadly, today, Heenan is almost in that same way. But what a duo... if there's a heaven up there, and there's always a show everynight, I'll bet Gorilla is hamming it up with Gordon Solie just near 'The Gorilla Position'.
Gorrila Monsoon will always be a legend he and bobby heenan set the standard for todays commentators in wwe i remember gorrila and jesse ventura commentating on the old ppv's when i was a kid ventura was the perfect heel and gorrila the best good guy they were the perfect combo and it only got better when heenan came along
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
everybody looks back at the monsoon and heenan pairing as being the best and says that the ross and lawler pale in comparrison.but the truth is the exact opposite. watching WM 8, i found their commentary to be painful to listen to. all i ever hear monsoon say is "will you stop" and heenan saying shit that isn't funny or charismatic at all. jr and lawler are a much better pairing. bret hart said that the heels in real life are more decent then the good guys. i'll bet monsoon was really a jerk
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the old curmudgeon. in wrestling, there are good guy and bad guy announcers. ventura, heenan and lawler are the bad guy. monsoon, vince and JR are your good guy. looking back at these old wrestling tapes, i realised how piss poor of a good guy announcer gorilla was. he always cheered for the good guys regardless of how crooked they were, and he did nothing the whole card long but tell heenan to shut up. not very entertaining to me. now there's a man with a serious superiority complex.
One of the most moving and upsetting tributes to a true legend that I've ever seen, you can hear the genuine emotion and sadness in Vince's voice and the way he delivers the tribute always brings tears to my eyes
Long live the Gorilla... I've been watching wrestling for 21 years... I grew up with Gorilla and Jesse... I lived through Gorilla and Bobby... Two of the greatest tandums ever... Not putting down Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler, but I would still rather listen to Gorilla and Jesse any day of the week... I miss you Gino
Monsoon was awesome, Heenan and Monsoon were the best commentating duo ever in wrestling. I miss those days of wrestling and when Monsoon passed, I admit I cried a bit. Perhaps it was because I felt bad for his family, and another part was that part of life where everything was simple but fun, well it was gone.
I remember at the 2001 Survivor Series when Vince was cutting a promo about the legends of WWF and when he mentioned Gorilla, the arena exploded with a huge pop and rightfully so.
god bless you gorilla you were my favoraite wrestler and a commintator thank for the good times you were a show man rest in peace bro we love you and we missed you
Gorilla was one of the guys I remember from way back when I first started watching wrestling (around 1990?)...always loved him-- the chemistry between him and Hennan was just pure gold. Of course than as a kid, I never knew he actually wrestled, but better late than never. Much respect to Gorilla.
I can't believe that Pro Wrestling Illustrated voted him as the "Worst Announcer of the Year" on numerous occasions. Pro wrestling today NEEDS to have an announcer like this.
@Ckypwnd: What was wrong with MRHOLLYWOOD52485's comment? The announcing nowadays does blow with the absence of JR and a heel Jerry Lawler. Mike Tenay's the best active announcer and he's not on Gorilla's or JR's level.
@gowihim Vince owes his part of his livelyhood to Gorilla Monsoon. Without Gino, the WWE may not have existed today. Guys like Gorilla, Freddie Blassie, Arnold Skaaland, Ernie Ladd and Captain Lou Albano were his dad's friends and part of both Sr. and Jr.'s inner circle. When Vince Sr. passed away, his last wish to his son was to take care of all of them.

@MRHOLLYWOOD52485: AMEN! Now that JR's gone and King is a shell of his former self the announcing blows. Mike Tenay's ok though.

I love these tributes Vince puts together. You can tell how much people like Gorilla meant to Vince. Same goes to Bulldog, too.

@RSXemperor You are right, Gorilla owned part of the WWF so when Vince bought them out one of the conditions was Monsoon have life time employment

@Londrick Also from what I heard, Vince paid for Gorilla and Skaaland's medical care in the last years of their lives.

@RSXemperor I didn't know but but I don't doubt it's true as someone else said without guys like that Vince wouldn't be where he is today
