I first heard this album when I was 18 years old. It did and still does have a profound effect on me..I wish Floyd would get back together a cut a new album...
What ever happened to men like bill, I feel like a wee fancy pants compared to bill, n I've been round it all but this is wat brave means if so I'm a coward....
How about we don't compare them. They're uncomparable and two completely different types of artists. Gilmour is the guitar and sound of Pink Floyd and Waters is the concepts and lyrics.
There's no reason not to enjoy the solo efforts of both Waters and Gilmour, however different they may be. But it is no real leap to say they were much better in the collaborative phase of the Floyd. Watch the documentary on the making of the Dark Side of the Moon to see this demonstrated. One thing the film reveals is the vital role played by Rick Wright in the piano and organ arrangements. Genius!
Pink Floyd were at their best when they were all worked together as equals. 'Dark Side of the Moon' is my favourite album of theirs and they all helped create that sound. Still, I don't see how someone can prefer David Gilmour as a songwriter to Roger Waters as a songwriter. 'Amused to Death' is one of my all-time favourite albums, perhaps even my favourite, whereas post-Waters Pink Floyd and solo David Gilmour is pretty inconsistent and no way near as lyrically moving as Waters. Just my 2 cents
Waters tries to envoke emotion through lyrics, Gilmour through music, and I can appreciate good music over good lyrics (though both working together make magic), and Gilmour is a better musician and song writer than Gilmour.
Little known fact is, any guitar solo breaks on the Wall, like the one on Mother, was actually composed by Gilmour, not getting credit of course.
@clockworkfiction3 I agree that Gilmour is a great musician and musical arranger, but his actual songwriting I find to be fairly average. 'The Division Bell' is a pretty good album but 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason' was poor and his solo stuff has never really captured my attention. The Waters/Gilmour songwriting tandem was one the best ever (in my opinion, they were the very best), but I think that, all things considered, Waters is the more talented of the two.
Well, everybody has their own opinion. I've just always felt that Waters repeats himself a helluva lot, lyrically and musically. Pros and Cons has like 7 different tunes from the Wall on it, including the guitar from In the Flesh. Waters, for me, is more of a lyricist than a songwriter, and without a competent guitarist to come up with solos, his songs are nothing but acoustic strumming. But, I do agree that Waters/Gilmour songwriting is some of the best.
@clockworkfiction3 that may be so but Waters has a style, as for Gilmour/Waters song writing I'm sure you'll find that the majority of Floyds material was mainly Waters, even when it has Gilmour's name on it it is mainly a small contribution or nly there for contractual reasons, that's not to take anything away from the legend that is Gilmour or the others naturally!, I'm glad Barrett left the band, with him in it maybe Roger would have been stifled and Floyd could possibly have been forgotten.
When Gilmour's name is on the song, I wouldn't say it was a small contribution. Most of the music to Dogs, Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here and many others...I wouldn't call his music a small contribution. Not to mention that Gilmour and Wright practically ad libbed the whole middle section of Money. But, both are legends. Conceptually/lyrically, Waters gave Floyd with a backbone, and while Barrett was briliiant, with him still there, the band would be very different.
David Gilmour and Roger Waters are two different types of geniuses. Gilmour is heavy on the instruments (especially noticeable in Coming Back To Life), and Waters is heavy on the lyrics. Wright is a blend between them. However, they are all geniuses.
@therewegomagick Really? Take the song Terminal Frost and compare it to this; it's about an even fight in my opinion. However, Terminal Frost has better instruments than a song like Late Home Tonight or It's a Miracle (Don't get me wrong; the instruments are still great in those two songs). If you listen to On An Island, the instruments there are just incredible. The Blue, Smile, Castellorizon... In my opinion, a song like Perfect Sense is not as good on the instruments but makes up in lyrics.
@therewegomagick Ive got all of Waters solo cuts even two bootleg studio cuts that no ones ever heard , I was a engineer , that had engineer friends who got them for me , Ill be posting them soon , been damn busy , two jobs , russell bradford banks on fb his solo work is intense, I love his vision, his reply , to mankinds fraility,
Waters became one fuck of a good lyricist....for as much shit as his solo albums take, they are exquisitely well written. Maybe he shouldve just done spoken word?
i always seem to return to Roger Waters music..NO one these days, latest "artists" if we can call them that, can make lasting soul music that moves you to your core. NONE.. today's music is just about sex, slapping your ho's ass and self gratification..NOTHING WITH MEANING..these "artists" are flash in the pans..you are meaningless and a waste of skin..
thank you Roger Waters for making music that will last generations. you truely will never be forgotten..
my view? pink flloyd and roger waters have 1 thing !!!! you can listen to it and drown in it over and over...the music combined with the lyrics create a world in many ways........and it never ends........Roger is a genius, but so are the great musicians of pink flloyd!!! they belong together.........
I really don't understand why they didn't just name this album after Pink Floyd. Even though it was just Roger Waters himself. All the band members deserve to carry the name even when they are by themself. Id say Roger Waters didn't want to carry the name. I respect that even though if I were him I sure as hell would.
After The Final Cut, Waters wanted the name Pink Floyd dissolved, but after a heavy legal battle the name was sold to the remaining members of the band. He had no legal entitlement to the name, not that he would have used it anyway. The funny thing about Waters's solo project was that everything he made was far better than what Pinkfloyd made without him, but because of his anonymity during Pink Floyd, no one new who he was. In the early nineties, his concerts were half full!
where did you pull the last statistic from? waters didnt tour in the early 90's, he did the '87 "radio kaos" tour and that was his last tour till the "in the flesh" tour of the late 90's
i love both waters' solo albums and the post waters floyd albums, but i think the problem with waters albums (especially amused to death) was that because he was losing his voice, it was increasingly hard for him to sing so he spoke the words. a minor flaw in an otherwise brillaint album

i tend to disagree in only that waters solo albums are far superior in instrumental alone, let alone lyrics...
however, pink floyd's final album Division Bell was top notch. must have pink floyd.
