wow......i had clothes "just like" the little brother back then. The standard uniform of a kid then was blue denim jeans rolled up at the bottom of the legs, the pull over striped shirt and "Keds" high top sneakers and of course you had to have a crew cut with just a little extra hair in the front to comb back
I've notices that in a lot of these old shorts, the character goes back in time and does things "properly", rather than apologizing for their mistakes.
The government is your friend. We only drug you into submission for your benefit. There is no obesity at the labor camps. Only health. You will be a good productive worker. You're not a slave you choose to toil in the hot sun.
I'm a little disturbed by all the people who agree that emotions should be controlled like this video suggests. While I agree that tripping over a sprinkler isn't something to get upset over, your friends being douche bags and your brother reading your mail are reasonable things to get annoyed at. Emotions need to be expressed in a healthy way, not outright suppressed.
That was actually pretty good, especially compared to the other videos like that that I've seen from the 50s. A lot of people could benefit from learning to control their emotional impulses, but then they might not buy as much stuff. That's why the government doesn't condone this kind of thing now. THE GOVERNMENT MAKES ME SO MAD!
You know, the funny thing is this film pretty much hits it on the head. Just because it is set in the 50's doesn't make it sophmoric or inapplicable to today's world. Some things are so full of common sense that they transcend time or circumstance.
He is not talking about bottling up your emotions, he is saying, don't get upset over little stuff, and don't lose control of your emotions. Today we see people losing control of their emotions far too much. I feel that it is very childish to have temper tantrums, even though so many adults still have them.
This is the only Coronet film i've seen that actually kind of makes sense, if you dont get angry at useless things it's good. But anger is an outlet, bottling all your emotions up can lead to problems. (mental health problems).
That's funny that you ask that, because I myself have always wondered about whether or not it's socially acceptable to get angry. Because I' personally have been known to never get angry, and I've been told & noticed that it "pisses" other people off. I've always wondered why? What's your take on this subject?
I believe this is the perfect standard for every male. Just laugh about it and ball up all your negative feelings. Also interesting, is I've noticed with males & females is, males cope by laughing, and women cope by crying. I noticed when one of my females said to me when I busting up at a serious problem, she said "you laugh, I cry". Anyways I wonder why that is? What does anyone else think?
That's a good analysis, I think this video has something to teach us, as do most instructional videos from this era. They shouldn't simply be written off as "crazy old videos".
As for men laughing and women crying, men tend to be less emotional and focus on events, they know, just as cited in this video, that getting emotional only makes things worse, women have a harder time controlling their emotions.
I liked it. I think this is going to help me with my anger a little. I mean, I already knew that I should think before I do, but that's just something I've become careless about I I just think (for some odd reason) that if I get angry that I can control the situation.I think that's a pretty stupid way to think when it's repeated in my mind :D
It does no good to express anger in a physical manner. People today are so self-centered, they only think of their "right" to express themselves. How we say and do things has a definite impact on others. You can either be a blessing to people by not allowing your feelings control your behavior or you can be a curse by taking all your frustration out on everyone.
Don't buy into the myth of "mental illness" which only labels behavior, and no behavior qualifies as an illness.
@YouKidsNever What about schizophrenia? It's behavior when you see and hear things that aren't there?
What about the genetic mental illnesses that we can link to certain brain chemicals?
Certainly, personal responsibility is a great thing, and we all have a high degree of autonomy over our own brains and mind, and your overall message is quite agreeable, but are you seriously saying that mental illness doesn't exist? You seem like a good person, and I think you're smarter than that.
@Zekkron People who have had a break with reality do so most likely because of a traumatic experience in their lives. You should know that there are more success stories with patients who get loving support during those times than with those who are given drugs. Watch book tv's "Anatomy of an Epidemic" or read "Mad in America". I'm not certain what genetic "mental illnesses" you are refering to. Bipolar, borderline, etc., are learned behaviors. The drugs do not help balance any brain chemicals.
You know, this video is still pretty relevant. More so, even, considering how crazy some people get these days. Next time one of my friends flies off the handle, I'll try and point them to this video. Though... they'll probably just get angry at me for it.
This is one episode of I Love Lucy you'll never see.
