Although this is very useful, it is also quite confusing. A pentatonic scale has, by definition, FIVE notes, not eight. A 'scale', again by definition, starts and ends on the same 'root' note. Yours does not. It caused me no end of confusion as I worked out why this 'scale' is in A when it starts on a flattened 3rd and ends on a flattened 7th (I think).
The sequence is well worth learning, but I wonder if you ought to get the terminology right before setting out to teach such things?
@properjob As the video title suggests the intent is to move away from scales and other pedantry. Nonetheless I felt obligated to respond to the post below. An analysis of the first sequence will reveal: C A G E D C A G. Removing the duplicate notes will leave a five note pentatonic scale. One thing we as learning musicians can do is to get beyond the concept that a scale need start and end on a root note. Starting on the flatted 3rd and ending on the flatted 7th highlights the "blue" notes.
Sorry if I offended you - that was not my intention. The clip is among my favourites and, as I mentioned, it is very useful to us learners. We'll have to agree to disagree on the fundamental use of scales; pedantic? I don't think so, and nor do millions of musicians - among them many, many accomplished improvisers in the fields of blues and jazz.
The beginning pattern is a pentatonic scale and works for both C major and A minor. I am using the pattern in the context of an A blues. A minor pentatonic scale is the start of the blues scale. When I add those color tones at the end of the video it is approaching more of a complete blues scale and those added notes would not fit as well in C major. Hope that helps?
Thanks...I'm from the Hudson Valley in NYS. The t-shirt comes from the folks who sell ice at the Greyfox Bluegrass Festival.
