Most people who criticize dog trainers who use discipline, boundaries, and E collars are usually those who have disobedient dogs which jump up on people, don't come when they're called, bark at everything, and pull on the leash. I wish I lived next door to the guy in this video so that he could help me with my dog. I have more difficulties with training dogs because I am a quadriplegic. Despite that, I have a fairly well-trained dog who loves to listen.
e collars are only good to create a dog-robot very quickly... if people weren't lazy, they wouldn't need them... plus, how do you deserve any respect at all, if you're using a machine to correct the dog, instead of your personal energy?
@bububububak Personal energy?? LOL!! you must mean fear. Spend some time researching e collars before you comment on something you dont understand....You must also understand, There is no such thing as a robot dog.
First off... it's a Maligator!!! Those dogs are happy when you're beating them with a stick, as long as they're working. (: Try putting one on a more sensitive breed like a BC. My friend's BC cowers and slinks away when hers is put on. I don't think it's relevant if Nitro is happy to get his collar put on, because he knows that when the collar is put on, he gets to work. My question for you is: could you get Nitro to the same exact level of obedience without the e-collar? Yes. So why use it?
@erikeetparakeet Yes, I can and show it in a lot of my other videos including this one. please go and watch them. I use them because they are non personal and very motivational to aid in extra attention to command in an overall training program. Also I have a BC mix and and she is in some videos as well. I was the BC's 3rd owner at 8 months old and rescued her from being put down because a clicker only behaviorist told the owners to. Your friends BC is not being trained right.
Great Video.I have been a positive reinforcement trainer for years. After working with this method for about on a beagle, I have found he needs a twinge of correction to get his full attention. He is going to do schutzhund tracking and I need him to take me seriously. Im going to do escape and advoidance training with him. Good to see a smart trainer using equipment well
that was an awesome video, and was very informative. i was on the line about using an e-collar with my doberman, but now my mind is set on getting one! i spend a lot of time working with her, but i'd like to take her training to the next level. i have always used strictly positive reinforcement in the past, which has turned out some good results, but it occasionally the dog will ignore me if I don't have a treat in my hands. sometimes I feel as if I'm bribing her obedience.
i dissagree with you on this.I belive that you treat a dog as you would like to be treated and i would deffo not like to wear one , would you? Im a firm beliver you can do anything with a dog with positive reinforcement but thats just me , im not saying for you not to use them but i am just posting my opinion [ a dog gives you a bond so amazing no human can give ] :) x
@tornandfrail Thank you for your opinion. This video is not a training video and in no way shares any info how we train. Positive reinforcement is our foundation but we are not limited to food only. Please note: This video is only meant to show how the dog is reacting when he sees the e collar, how he responds when it is on and when it is not on. If the collar was harmful and mean the dog would show it by being nervous and or fearful. Right?
@unleashedpotentialK9 Please ask your self this. Is the dog happy? is he nervous of the collar or does he like it? is he obedient with or with out the collae? Is he happy to be obedient. Obviously he is. Now, You be the judge and ask yourself this. If the e collar is as bad as some people say then why is this dog so super happy and obedient. If it was used to punish and be harmful wouldn't the dog show, by its body language when he sees it. So,can it be used to communicate?
@unleashedpotentialK9 absolutly i mean this collar cant be hurting him or he would not be so happy to wear it but im afraid that some people who dont know how to use this would cause more problems to the dog rather than good. as a trainer you will know your dog better than anyone else and you will pick up on his feelings when your training him and you will deffinatly pick up if he is in pain and as we can see from the video hes more excited than anything :)
@unleashedpotentialK9 its nice to see someone have the same compassion as me for training dogs and its nice to see someone who knows what they are doing keep up the good work :) and guys if he knew his dog was in anyway uncomfortable or in pain then he would deffinatly take it off but as you can see this is a high energy dog and he does a great job with him :)
We use e collars with our trainer and I must say I wish i had known about this kind of training earlier with my older dog. Used properly they are a wonderful tool. My working line shepherd get super excited when i put her collar on because she knows she's going out or to training class so she can work.
I dont really see that big of a deal with using an e-collar. I for one have only used pinch collars + rewards and have gotten super sound obedience out of my gsd. The only reason i'd use an ecollar is for offleash reliability from long distances, or just to get the dogs attention if he is fixated on a squirrel when he is far away. In my opinion, this tool can be abused way easier than a pinch collar since all you have to do is just nick the dog or put a constant stim on him until he complies.
but in all fairness, so can a pinch collar, choke chain, or even a nylon collar used in the wrong hands. i do think all dogs should be trained initially with rewards + praise. basically imprinting desired behaviors through rewards. then wen those actions are sound, then you can start adding compulsion training. or else, slapping an ecollar on your dog and zapping him until he complies is basically just force training.
Nice dog, well trained. Too bad people refuse to see anything other than what they want to see in your video. I'm impressed with anyone who can take a Mal to this level of training as I find they're too much dog for me.
The dog seems so well trained, the e collar may not have even been used during the video. Pain or not would you train your 2 year old child using an e-collar? Perhaps the e-collar is less aggressive but at the same time it's less hands on with your dog. Everyone has their own opinion.
@kardashev7 Actually, yeah I would. Considering that a child died in front of his mother and grandmother about 3 blocks away from me because he ran out in front of a car. I don't see what is wrong with putting a leash or collar on a child. The only reason I wouldn't use it is that it's illegal. I've put the collar on myself (have you?) and I can personally tell you that the TENS machine they use at physio is a lot harsher than an e-collar.
@madtabby66 It's sad something like that happened. There are backpacks that have a leash on them for kids. So with all the variables to consider, would the mother have enough time to get to the remote to activate the e-collar, were they holding hands, was the driver speeding, etc. are you saying an e-collar would have saved the child's life? Am I to understand that if it was not illegal, you would use an e-collar on a human child to help teach them? Sounds like its taking a step back.
@kardashev7 If the child had a habit of running out into the road, and had been corrected then yes, it could have saved the childs life. As for using an e-collar on a child, what is the difference between an e-collar and a sharp noise or a quick swat on the hand? Eventually children get to the point where you can sit down and reason with them. Dogs never reach that point. Also, I don't think a child would take off across six lanes of traffic to catch a bird (a dog I know died that way).
@madtabby66 I just can't see that happening. Sure you can reason with a child at some point but doesn't mean they will listen. There are videos on you tube of teenagers crossing a busy intersection and getting hit. Children run into streets all the time chasing balls. I wonder what the statistics are involving a trained dog verse reasonable kids running into the street to chase whatever. Depending on the loud noise I would say all are negative reinforcement or cause pain to some extent.
@kardashev7 (stupid limits) as for the leash, I don't know where you live, but here, you are basically accused of child abuse for putting a leash on a child. I can't even think of the last time I saw one. No the driver was not speeding. The child saw his grandmother across the street and jumped right in front of the pickup. The driver was found not at fault, although he has to live with this for the rest of his life.
@madtabby66 I would like to see the evidence you have on a child safety harness being illegal where you live. So then either the mother or child is at fault? If the child was too young to understand, I don't see how an e-collar would have helped. I have a massage device that sends electric current to the muscles. I would imagine the e-collar is between that on the lowest setting and a vibrating effect. Have you tried a clicker?
@leonardletoto lol, u are so right. So many ignorant dog "experts" out there. My 2.5 yr. old Czech shepherd has always trained with an e collar. She goes nuts when i put it on her and can't wait to go outside to train.
@madtabby66 Of course not, there are plenty of ways to drain your dog's energy: You could let your dog run on the treadmill, or go run or skate with your dog. But this dog isn't out of control, he looks very obedient and you can see he loves to work for you. But he has such amount of energy in him that he becomes nervous.
I cant believe anyone would say this dog is nervous or fearful! I'm watching it with jealousy thinking I wish MY dog wanted to work so hard for something and be so happy to do so!!
@fetterArsch u are an idiot. this is a mallinois, one of the most intelligent, high drive dogs on the planet. the reason it responds so quickly to commands is because it understands - and ENJOYS - what is asked. a fearful dog would not be so keen, bright and alert. it is wagging its tail, head high, and shows no signs of fear- the only reason it acts like a robot is because it is so well trained. my dog is a malli/dutch sheperd mix and when she is working she is the same.
I just love ignorant comments made by people who did a Google search on dog training, watched a few episodes of "It's Me Or the Dog" and suddenly they're animal behavior experts. I think the dog looks unnecessarily nervous. Nothing in this video is anything that can't be achieved with using only positive reinforcement.
I don't see why would you want to train dogs using methods of pain when there are so many other different methods out there that have scientifically and empirically evidence of effectiveness.
@zimeh you are watching a high drive dog that loves to work and that is very motivated to get the toy in the background, and you see Nervousness?? OMG,Are you kidding?? have you ever worked with or trained a malinois. There is not a nervous bone in his body. He is doing everything he can as fast as he can to get the toy, which is positive reinforcement by the way. Positive reinforcement ONLY is not real world training and will not get the same results as using the balance both + and -.
You obviously know very little about training. Just because I use e collars in training does not mean pain and suffering. Get educated!! things have changed since the 60's. Technology and methods.
if e collars are so bad then watch 2 videos on my page and explain to me why they all give the same answer.
E-collars do they hure part 1 and part 2
My methods are based on science. Classical and Operant conditioning.
But what does Skinner actually say about positive punishment (adding punishment, in this case through electricity) and it's effects? You can't add a behaviour, you can only remove a behaviour. It's useless in longer terms of training, and when the owner is away the same behaviour will be there. Basically it just damages the relationship between dog and owner too much to actually be effective.
@zimeh You sure can add a behavior. We do it all the time. When the dog knows an alternate behavior gets him paid and it is reinforced over and over the dog eventually does the desired behavior in alternate of the one we don't want. Used properly the collar does not damage the relationship in any way but enhances it. Look at my dog does he look like he has a bad relationship with me? NOPE.
and why only think punishment? - and + reinforcement used with balance works best. Motivational to dog.
@unleashedpotentialK9 You can add a behaviour through positive reinforcement, but not through punishment. Although you won't reach results just as quickly, you can go through positive reinforcement only. This is what all science regarding operant conditioning actually says, as I'm sure you know since you seem well-versed in Skinner and the terminology.
I honestly think the dog looks unnecessarily nervous, compared to dogs trained in only positive reinforcement. So yes, I think you could
@zimeh wrong. he is a working breed and that high pitchness in his voice is excitement. All working dogs like that especially german shepherds(i own one) do that because they have such a strong desire to work and please the handler/owner.
@zimeh this is because you are most likely AN APDT TRAINER- qualified online with no real experience. I have a nervous aggressive dog who, without an e collar, would have no proper life. with your type of training eg ignoring negative behaviour, she would have bitten a hundred ppl and had numerous dog fights and no off lead excerise. my dog is happy and alive, not in the ground. YOU decide what is humane- life in control or death for aggression. you have no idea.
This dog is not fearful at all. Not a hint of hesitation in its behavior. In fact, it is SUPER PUMPED to get that collar on bc it knows it's about to work for its human. A robot?!? That's just a Mal being a Mal, and a beautifully trained one at that. How could a dog have any more personality than a working Mal? Silly, shortsighted dog lovers that have no respect for K9's instinctual behavior put so much heat on e collar methods. It can be a wonderful tool in the right hands. Great job!
its a really good dog and all, its just how do u know that control of ur dog is not out of fear? they may just look happy cause they know if they dont do what u say when u say it, they will have pain...i duno, that didnt look like a dog to me...it looked like a robot :/ no personality
@MusicMotives . Seriously, does this dog look fearful?? Does he even look scared at all when I show him the collar?? No!! Fear would not cause him to run to it so happily. The obedience from the dog is not out of fear because he is working for the toy reward in the back of the room. This is called Positive Reinforcement. The dog works for things the dog wants plain and simple.
Do some research on Malinois he is not a robot he is a very intense working K9 not a lazy spoiled pet.
@unleashedpotentialK9 mm u may have a point, but no one can read a dogs mind, im just worried that it would cause a dog pain, i would looovvee to have a dog like yours (it is yours btw?) your so lucky, there is so many ways to train dogs and this dog has been the best well trained dog ive seen, but its just the way its been trained that im worryed about, if i ever got a dog i would be worried about using this method, even though the results are so good :/ sorry if that sounded like hate before
@musicofnote1 I use them because I know how to use them properly and produce amazing results. watch the rest of the videos I have. You should do more research on the tool before you label it. When people go for physio therapy and have a tens machine put on they dont call it Shock therapy. You need to realize technology has changed a lot since the 60's in the electronic world.
e collars can be applied without hurting the dog watch more videos

If you can acheive the same results without shock-collars (not be coy, it's a shock collar), why use them?
musicofnote1 1 year ago
@musicofnote1 I use them because I know how to use them properly and produce amazing results. watch the rest of the videos I have. You should do more research on the tool before you label it. When people go for physio therapy and have a tens machine put on they dont call it Shock therapy. You need to realize technology has changed a lot since the 60's in the electronic world.
e collars can be applied without hurting the dog watch more videos
