This DOES look like ITV's top drama "London's Burning" but made before it. Phil is surely taking a couple of attempts at walking south over Tower Bridge at 3:03...
Good track! Not sure where it did fell in the charts but i bet its chart position didn't reflect how good a track it is as its not an obvious pop record.
Who amongst you has thought this would be cool no one about scavenging in big shops and just doing what you want with out any day to day pressures...just a thought !!!!
@qwertzxcvb1000 hi there , the video was a homage to that great 1970's sc-fi classic The Omega Man , featuring Charlton Heston , at the time it was released in the middle of the summer which I never understood ! it was surley a autumn/winter track , it's low key production was up against the likes of Frankie Goes To Hollywood which didn't help it's chart placing ...added to that The League didn't tour which on hindsight was crazy.
This is the "answer song" to Dont you want me? isnt it? When I first heard it it made sense to me in that way. This song for me has a lot of personal connections too having moved away to a remote area-Im sure that is pretty pointless to anyone else-I really love the mood and tone of the song and the powerfully understated chorus-just a beautiful song.
@Isuilt you guys need a bit of education , before Will Smith there was an unknown actor called Charlton Heston who appeared in a low budget flim called Ben Hur , the video is a tribute to the film The Omega Man (which is based on the book Iam Legend ) anyway most league fans at the time were a bit confused as this song followed the lebanon which was a complete contrast (Hysteria had 3 producers so the vibe was lost ) great song one of my favs
What a great hair do Phil has in this video, I had mine like that then but I'm 47 now and a kind of brillo grey. Should I grow it back and colour it? Would I get away with it? Seriously, the Human League are brilliant, just bought the Brighton DVD and it is fantastic. They put todays artists away with ease, hoping to see them at Stoke in July.
I was lucky enough to b a teenager when H L exploded onto the scene. The kids of today aint got nothing like this to get their teeth into. They never buy any music and havent got a clue who is in the charts. very sad. The only stuff they seem to listen to is undergroung souless garbage.
This and Louise are the most underated songs from THL.... I first heard this at 19 and it struck so many chords with me emotionally... I still love it now 21 years later.. Class Toony...
@74posy im qpr fan thats def not loftus road lol, it looks like the old white city stadium just up the road which was demolished a few years after this video was made
@randypaknor wonderful song about the ability to let go....i was a synth-player at that time myself, but as soon as i heard "DARE" i told myself & the band: leave the biz to other people. and that´s what is important: to enjoy others´ successes u could not have. and phil makes it easy to enjoy!!!
This is definately their most underrated song, not that I dislike "Don't you want me" but these days most radio stations only tend to play that which does get a bit annoying that gems like this always get overlooked, any one else here feel the same way ?.
Only saw this video once when the song was first released but it stayed with me all these years. I didn't get the film references back then but did later. Omega Man and I am legend.
After watching Omega Man last night, I can see so much of this video is aimed at recreating that film. Which is rather ace. Also Phil references the same story with the FAST records version of Circus of Death by mentioning a "shortwave radio maessage from teh last man on earth" I Am Legend story was made as Last Man On Earth in 1965 which is the same story used for Omega Man. Look it up on here.
haha i had a classm8 that looked EXACTLY like Phil Oakey in this vid ^^ Totally doppelganger :D Anyhow, love this track, my fav from the Hysteria album, ty for postin :)
I totally LOVE the low-key, understated chorus - this is my favourite HL song after Empire State S Human Just goes to show that everyone has different tastes.
A very underated and powerful track about lonelyness from THL, sadly not really done live anymore. Love those synthasised horns and Susanne and Joanne as ghosts
I think I read at the time that they got the idea for this video from the film, " The Omega man" starring charlton heston, which was based on a book i also read, it has recently been redone as the film "I am legend" starring Will smith
My favourite band, sue and jo looked absoloutley stunning in this vid. why are music videos so bad nowadays? the 80s was the era to grow up in i suppose.
At the risk of sounding sad, early 80's pop was a lot darker and interesting than the stuff churned out later in the decade, and this is a prime example
jesus i forgot about this song i haven't heard it for at least 20 years - excellent post, congratulations you have great taste in music - best sheffield 80' band by a mile !
Wow! Here I am thinking I'm an eighties music expert when I discover a H.L. tune I've never heard before! N.T.S., never seen the interesting vid that accompanied it! Thanks for posting!
it reminds me of enjoy the silence (depeche mode),especially from 2:50 to 3:25.this song is from 1984 and enjoy the silence is from 1990.....it´s clear who copied who
Just because it reminds you of Enjoy The Silence doesn't mean it was "copied" by Depeche Mode. Martin Gore is a better songwriter than Philip Oakley, although I still love them both.
@aitken1971 Yeah I hear Enjoy The Silence too in the melody.. That song came out when I was 5 but it was my favourite when I was 16 in 2001.. At that time I was seriously the only person in the school who still listened to 80s music, the only other person was a guy I knew who came to our school from Mexico who had Depeche Mode on his mp3

actually ur find she was 16 nearly 17 and she was in school both of them were,i spelt tulley instead of sulley any way thanx for ur in put y i dont no but it wernt really needed
It says on her website that Susanne was born on 22/03/1963 and was 17 when Phil discovered her in October 1980 which is why he had to ask her parents' permission for her to go on that first tour with the band
In England we stay in school to do A levels till age 18 if we wish, although it isn't compulsory...that is why Susan and Joanne were still in school aged 17 and 18! After touring with THL they returned to school to finish their exams.

Good video but what a weak song. Any decent follows up after Dare would have cemented their position. We had to wait too long for a good songs like Human and Lebanon with so/so stuff from THL.
i felt this was a highly overlooked single. the ominous throbbing bass/synth sound throughout it is timeless. this song has such a refined icy-electro feel, it could even fare well in the hippest of electro clubs in the hague.
and human was pretty terrible compared to every other single by the league.
can i just say how ace i think human league r!! im goin 2 see dem in december in dere ome town so cant wait!! already seen em but dey r da best group eva! x
Pity 28 Days didn't feature the 2 backing ladies - far preferable to the wooden Cillian Murphy. But I digress - what a song - and the two ladies, just what is it about them.
In my opinion probably the Best Human League track ever! Phil's lyrics are profound and make sense, the synth score is downbeat but memorable. Unfortunatly the Girls don't really have much to do, but backing. A shame Phil hates this track now and rarly does it live! It would be so good to have Susan do a female version of this with Phil and Jo on backing. One can but dream.
Nice 'sightseeing tour' vid they made - I live here, & never see the damned city... but then again, who wants to see London emptied of people... I do!!!
This is a neat musical take on The Last Man On Earth & The Omega Man by the way...
Just a strange thought...why did he need to throw a stone at the girls. I'm not understanding this video...something to do with him (all alone in an empty town) and the band keep on appearing...does he want them to go or something?
LOL! I agree in some parts....except there's nothing wrong with Joanne...you agree?
Just had a thought...maybe this is a subliminal message that he wanted to go solo...the dissapearing band...the stones at the girls...him all alone....them appearing so he changes....
Shame they never do this live, a more down beat Electric dreams. How quickly people forget about the nuclear paranoia of the mid 1980s. Shamelessly ripped off in opening scenes of the film '28 Days Later'
good song, slow video, thank for this jewel of 80's new wave

God I love this song. the lyrics in the second verse are so understatedly devastating - delivered in Phil's monotone:
'Standing here together means so much
I won't forget your confidence, I won't forget your touch
I'll always come to see you
Passing through
We'll always be a world apart
I'll travel on, but I will be true...'
Heartbreaking

the idea of dead cities is not a new one, even with what people have said about '28 days later' .

Pity 28 Days didn't feature the 2 backing ladies - far preferable to the wooden Cillian Murphy. But I digress - what a song - and the two ladies, just what is it about them.

Love this song. Phil could've done without the man perm, but we all had perms in the 1980s.

I'm not understanding this video...something to do with him (all alone in an empty town) and the band keep on appearing...does he want them to go or something?
dontthinkofme 5 years ago
There are times both the girls need things thrown at them LOL.
andi064 5 years ago
LOL! I agree in some parts....except there's nothing wrong with Joanne...you agree?
Just had a thought...maybe this is a subliminal message that he wanted to go solo...the dissapearing band...the stones at the girls...him all alone....them appearing so he changes....
Maybe I'm just warped

no, yer not warped - that's an interesting theory

Shame they never do this live, a more down beat Electric dreams. How quickly people forget about the nuclear paranoia of the mid 1980s. Shamelessly ripped off in opening scenes of the film '28 Days Later'

You guys are overrating this just a liiitle bit but it is a fine song from their later era.
