If you want the "AwWwW" sound out of your pickups, easy way to do it is setting them really low under the strings and you get a killer "AwWwW" from the volume drop off of the string immediately after you hit it. You can get it from any pickup and really milk it with the right overdrive pedal. Say one with a lot of bass, treble you can mute and lots of clean gain.

@JonDeth I really really like that sound, and how it changes as the note decays so I tried lowering my PAF Pros down but I still can't really hear it, not like you can hear it in this video. My guitar is also basswood like Paul's RG in this vid but my neck is maple, do you think that's the reason I can't get it or should I lower my pups even further?

@parlancex it's also a matter of the amp and if applicable, the pedal you use on the amp. Try turning up the mids on your amp to 5-7 then your bass and treble on say 3-4. Both my amp and pedal give a great yawww sound so lowering my pickups brings it out a lot more since the note decays faster.

Probably the biggest attribute to that sound, if not in the pickup, is your amp's EQ setting and the speaker's frequency response.

Ah the humble beginnings of Paul Gilbert.

By wiring them in parallel, you're dropping the impedance so your signal is moving slower but richer like a transmission set into the worm gear to haul a massive weight. More muscle and slower pace equals cleaner, richer output.

With this in mind, the new pickup I've invented will eventually phase out the tradition passive pickup engineering.

Lets hope I can get them to market!

There are specially designed humbuckers so you don't have to attack your guitar with a router to fit them in. Ask where you're buying the pick up they should point you in the right direction
