It's such a shame this interview went so badly, because there are occasional glimpses of Shandling being really funny, like you feel there is potential for this to be great, but it never quite gets going. Shame, really.
@WhoElseButRada He wasn't trying to be funny. Garry is one of the most clever comedians of our time... He's just recently began to figure out that he doesn't need to put on a show impress people.
they are talking about the glue that holds their processes together.... like watching two architects talking about 2 famous buildings they built... if you are too stupid to understand subtext or glean insight on what they are actually communicating to each other.. what chops they both have.. you should go back to your local comedy clubs and fill up on dick jokes...
Garry was obviously playing with Ricky, emphasizing the awkwardness in social situations that they were discussing. Definitely awkward and not helped by Ricky's fawning laughter or ego. Am a huge fan of both comedians but never the twain shall meet in their case.
this interview made me really uncomfortable...i was expecting garry to snap out of it the whole time but wen it ended i got a really creepy feeling that his life is really like that.
(shudders) now i have to watch something else to shake this feeling...
I thought the interview was both intriguing and awkward and it had its funny moments too. My question is, were we all expecting a barrel of laughs from this, Just because they're both great comics? A very natural interview from both guys i thought. Enjoyed it very much.
The whole thing, all 5 segments were very entertaining and very funny. Hey, anyone who's a fan of Ricky Gervais or Garry Shandling wouldn't expect anything else. They are both the kings of gringe, why would anyone think that someone won?
Shandling was right in calling Gervais out on his lack of jew employment in his show. He had hardly any jews on it at all. A few token's like Ben Stiller don't cover up the facts. Clearly anti=semetic behaviour.
And look at Shandlings exposure of the Extra's episode with the Nazi uniform. He's so right. Gervais is a holocaust denier and Nazi sympashizer. How dare he.
LMAO your so right, Ricky Gervais has obviously a gazillion Jews to hire in the UK due to them being such a big part of the population of the UK, obviously because there is this gazillion and odd Jews in the UK, a good bilion of them entered the acting game,he should have chose them because theyre Jewish, why choose the best actors????, when there is so many Jews to hoose from in the UK. FUCKIN IDIOT TROLL
@llteejay Seriously a very stupid point. First of all Gervais makes light of almost all taboo subjects in his stand up (Disabled people, dwarfs, gays, religion, necrophilia etc...). Have you looked at the population of jews in england? They are a small minority, meaning there are far less jewish actors... he also didn't cast many indian or chinese people? does that mean he hates them? no it doesn't.
this was a perfect blend of both of their humor with a heaping dose of apathy mixed in. very entertaining, although i doubt they realized it at the time.
This piece was fastastic. As a kid I recall seeing Gary on TV occasionally, knowing nothing about his shows, nor who he was, and loved his "adult TV show" so much. It wasn't like the other night adult TV shows. And of course later, Larry Sanders being a masterpiece of TV. The Office likewise.
These two guys are artists - both brilliant television artists. Watching them meet was great fun - and the way the show was shot and cut gave us the most possible out of it. Great insight into Shandling!
like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Gervais's craft was influenced by American artists, whom he then bettered, both commercially and creatively. Simple.
How disappointing for Ricky. It was fairly obvious that whatever Gary popped prior to the interview, was kickin' in rather heavily towards the end. I too used to love him, but he just strikes me as another sad casualty of Hollywood all laughed out. Clearly Rickys' anxiety on the way there was well justified... Maybe hero worship is better done from afar??
Your [British television] interview with Garry Shandling was notoriously awkward. Were you disappointed with it? —Paul Gaughan Sheffield, England
No, I loved it. I didn't find it awkward, except when I pointed out that he looked a bit like Bingo from [the children's show] The Banana Splits. He didn't know who that was.
I just watched this entire series of videos. It's not awkward at all. It comes off as very natural and very funny. Both comedians are displaying their own trademark sense of humor. It's exactly the type of conversation I'd expect from these two guys. I think that a lot of people just don't get that these guys are constantly joking with each other. This is how comedians talk with one another. The description is very misleading.
The last part of this interview was quite good. They started to get along quite well as Gary began to trust Ricky more and more. Gary would have come over as much more likable if the interview had went on for another hour or so.
@whatiwasgoingtosay i think its awesome that English people don't get Gary Shandling because he's got a subtle sort of mean humor, almost regal and sarcastic, but constantly. i love ricky gervais and gary shandling, i thought the video was excellent.
@DerfRellim11 I spent the first four parts of this trying to decide if it was genuinely awkward or a very well played part.. just reading a few interviews they both did afterwards and apparently it was genuine. Shandling said he was doing another set of interviews in a totally different style, and walked in to an atmosphere that threw him. Gervais spent most of it either salvaging or doing what he does when he's nervous i.e. laugh and make it worse.
@alsdaftable don't get all upset and make assumptions because the word regal and English aren't synonyms in every sentence. i'm 100% brittish american and i have been to england on a few occasions, and since i'm commenting a ricky gervais video, i'd say i have a pretty good handle on the whole brittish comedy thing being the video is about how one of the greatest brittish comedians of all time developed his style from an AMERICAN actor.
I don't think it went badly at all. These are two comedians who have made careers out of exploiting awkward moments, and they genuinely seem to be aware of the other's career. This is comedy gold.
"Sorry, did the best I could"......considering I'm a giant ASSHOLE! (Ricky looks clearly pissed in the background...as he should be)....NEVER meet your heroes!
Im just guessing a channel 4 show for wasnt worth keeping up Rickys career was just starting to boom in America . They got on well . It doesnt seem cold at all. It was two guys discussing comedy from two perspective. Ricky has never and probably will never be put off by an experience .He's game for anything. Garry gave Ricky ALOT of information on where his comedy comes from. It was a stella interview. Great from both sides. he came to interview Garry and got ALOT of information out of him.
@freekjoy thats definitely true. but in a way it could have been better if they had simply gotten along better in the beginning. they did not get on 'well'. they just got on. idk if it would have been funnier if their had been a less-hostile-repoir b/t them... maybe... but it just didn't aggregate and it was what it was and still very funny.
I can see what ur saying it COULD have gone better i guess what i saw was a vereran trying to give a rookie advice. It didnt really work but made for great viewing. Larry saw ricky as an equil he respected his work and thats why he gave such an all telling no ego interview. Its all a case of ego i guess. Gary was trying to teach, Larry talked to ricky like he was a human being. I seriosly enjoyed Garrys input tho and was worth just as much
@freekjoy i agree it was a very interesting interview, with a lot of great reflection, ideas on comedy, and comedic orgins/general information. the viewing was unpleasant tho b/c shandling couldn't get over his ego. larry didn't consider ricky an equal, and it was a stellar interview. this was a good one scraped by, by two comedic geniuses. i was just disappointed that it didn't go better in the very beginning it could have been completely different and really good like the larry interview.
@coolmountains25 I think you're dead wrong. Ricky is probably a psychopath and Shandling, being a jew, rightfully picked up on his flamin racist heart.
It sickens me Shandling didn't punch him in the face.
@coolmountains25 i think you might be mistaking Gary's droll sense of humor for hostility. Or you and the guy who named this video are idiots and cant understand when comedians are joking if they're not doing 'setup punchline' jokes.
@jayrobson88 first of all. You don't make any sense at all!! what the fuck don't you know how to communicate an idea clearly wtf don't you even know how to write. you're so stupid. It makes what you're saying totally worthless because the grammar you use is stupid. another way to rephrase what you said is. "You and the guy who named this video are idiots because if they're not doing "setup punchline' jokes then you can't understand when the comedians are joking." and why does that matter at all?
I think the look on Ricky's face when interview is over says it all. Shandling is a nobody now. And Ricky a super star. So the winner of this battle is clear.
Shandling really is doing his best to unnerve Gervais, even to the extent of daring to suggest that Gervais is gay. Watch the way that he asks about the clothes that Ricky is wearing and then says that what he is wearing makes him "look straighter". The way that he hangs on that and stares down Ricky with a patronizing smile is painful. And you can see in Ricky's face at that moment that he is realizing how Shandling is actually personally attacking him, and for the first time there is no laugh.
@Eyeman25 i disagree, Shandling is a master of sarcasm and self deprecation. He wasn't taking a pot shot at Gervais here, he was just subtlety hinting and making fun of his own sexuality. Like the coffee scene prior, Gervais is just being slow. Shandling is a true comic genius and a student of human behavior.
@toffee20 Wow i think that ya maybe you're both right and shandling was insulting gervais and also himself. i thought the way shandling said "it makes me look straighter" was more self-invoked too... but b/c of the sour-repoir you get the sense it was also directed at gervais as well. Shandling was saying he likes his gay ass shirt b/c it still makes him look straighter than gervais's get up. so he was insulting him. but Gervais is the man for putting up with shandling's bs. anger neurosis etc.
who knows but i think the awkwardness was planned in advance. makes it more interesting. just look back at andy kaufman's career where the joke is shared with him and the guy he's falling out with
Well.......either everybody else here is crazy, or it's me (and yeah, it probably IS me), but I absolutely LOVED this!!!
Yes, it started out poorly, but by the time it rolled around to the finish, I didn't want it to end. The one SURE sign that ALWAYS lets you know you're watching something good......
why are you people arguing about this if shandling himself admits that it was a properly awkward interview/misunderstanding and not just a joke ? why would he still be lying 4/5 years after the fact
@InnocenceExperience nah I read it before watching this video 10+ months ago. sure you can google it tho as he really did say that but 10 months later I cant remember the exact links
People need to actually watch this and see how they are communicating, only listening is not enough to grasp their unique senses of humor. Gervais' classic style is full of facial expressions and body ticks so he can make you laugh without saying anything! Shandling is the same. They are joking around, imo it's hilarious!
I love Ricky, but I'm tempted to give Shandling the benefit of the doubt... for all any one knows he could have just had one of those days where a couple of things pissed him off and then he had to do an interview! No one can honestly say they haven't acted like an arse hole on the odd occasion just because they were in a shitty mood!
Can anyone posting comments in which they imagine that Garry Shandling is being a dick PLEASE just watch "The Larry Sanders Show" and then try and tell me that the man doesn't ,in fact, have an acute understanding of the showbiz ego! If you still don't recognise this after watching said show I will personally buy you the complete "Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps" box set and you can laugh yourself stupid(er) at cardboard characters saying cock, spunk and fanny 20 times per episode!
Sad to say, but Shandling is clearly the bigger man in the interview. He's just not interesting in being clownish. It's kind of sad, because I watch it and know that Shandling was a mentor to so many people on his show, and Ricky is still stuck on making childish humour with his (e.g "uncomfortable moments"). It's like Sarah Silverman said about Larry Sanders: People copied the wrong aspects of the it. They should have copied the process, making the characters real, not the "edgy" comedy.
Gary Shandling is gross. And WAY oversensitive about any jewish references. WTF ever. Have you ever met/seen/heard a jew that didn't talk incessantly about being jewish?
@ataricombat he's a comedian, he & gervais are joking around. if you couldn't tell he was acting like he was hurt and annoyed then he is doing a very good job!
i must be crazy. i don't get the thing on the net about this being a "disasterous" interview ... i didn't think it was that bad at all. being a long time fan of both ricky and garry, its exactly what i expected. they were trying to have a serious interview and be funny at the same time ... it didn't quite work, but i've certainly seen interviews that were much worse. the only genuinely awkward moment i saw was right at the very end ... it just seemed like they didn't know how to end it.
It's readily apparant that GS is condecending to RG, and obviously resents his success. RG is immensly more talented and witty. The result is really an embarrassment for GS. And, BTW he really does look like Bingo from The Banana Splits! Great observation!
I agree Shandling behaved this way with intent, to make the point why he is so great and Gervais so worthless. Tells me all I need to know about the "comedy genius".
Shandling has deep psychological problems..paranoid about antisemittism. No self irony at all. No sense of decency. Less brilliant than he thinks he is.
After all the uncomfortable moments, I think Ricky and Garry start to have a real interview... I can see why Ricky feels he's not a real interviewer after this... which is a shame cos I think he's quite affable. Maybe Ricky should've picked a personality that's less recluse
If you watch Conan's interview with Shandling on Late Night with Conan O'Brien (on youtube), you'll see that Shandling makes the same accusation that Conan is a racist (against jews), yet then goes on to make a racist joke about the Irish immigration problem. The accusation Shandling makes towards Gervais is obviously an attempt at humour. It's simply Shandling's way of making a cheap joke. Anyone who thinks otherwise is taking things too seriously
This interview is so odd that it's actually somewhat engaging to watch. Wonder what eccentric thing Shandling is going to do next. Ricky definitely seems more taken aback as I've ever seen him
The line is blurred between comedy and reality in this entire interview. What is supposed to be funny? Who is insulted? Who is being an egotistical jerk? It's a strange interview, but hardly a waste of my time watching it. As the viewer I am left not completely understanding what transpired, and with the questions left over about what transpired, keeps me interested. This interview is fascinating and very interesting to watch. Such a contrast to the Larry David interview.
i agree. It took a couple of views and some thinking about because what they both did and how they did it was very clever but the tension in this interview is mostly part of the act. I think there may have been one or two genuinely tense moments but the whole thing is so well done that its hard to say if any of it was genuine or if the whole thing was just comedy.
Shandling: now you're going to do the Larry Sanders DVD
Gervais: Nah, I'm gonna go now. See you later.
Shandling: That was the deal that we struck.
It looks like Gervais was irritated with Shandling by the end, and not doing the other interview was his way of saying "screw you". Still, an endlessly entertaining interview. Both Shandling and Gervais are comedy geniuses. I keep hoping they'll work together on something someday.
Wow, you can hear Shandling even say at the end "now you're gonna do the Larry Sanders DVD?" and Gervais says no. Then Garry looks slightly puzzled and says "that was the deal that we struck".
Which coincides with Shandling's recent explanation of this whole ordeal.
What happened is, Shandling called Gervais originally to get him for the Sanders DVD, and Ricky asked he do this in return... but Shandling was caught off guard when Gervais turned up already filming.
I've been a fan of Garry since"IGSS" and am a big fan of Ricky. If you watch this without realising the degree of self awareness that Shandling has shown in his work (especially TLSS) then you might think he's being a dick.To imagine that Garry is offended by slights against his appearance vastly underestimates this(I even have memories of him mocking early photos of his appearance as a kid in eps of IGSS and his own vanity was a running joke in the show).I think they "riff" quite well.
Can anyone one tell me why this is considered to have gone so poorly? Sure theres a couple of awkward moments but i dont think thats anyhthing out of character with Ricky's humour...i can't say much about Garry because i am not very familiar with his work or comedy. To me this interview was interesting, not all glitz and glamour like your run of the mill talk show in a fancy studio. you can see the inner workings of the interview process and see them both genuinely reacting to what is being said
For those that say Garry is a jerk - imagine a guy mocking how you look and mocking the holocaust if your jewish. 99% of people would be pissed. But somehow, everyone expects Garry to just laugh it up and roll with it. Sure, he's a comedian but he's just a guy too.
As other said though, clear power struggle - not following behind Ricky when he walks, not getting him the coffee, etc.
@chris06422 The UK was pummelled during the blitz and lost millions of it's sons and civilians to the German war machine. The Jews are not the only people who are allowed to use the nazi theme for humour. Look at Mel Brooks (a jew) who wrote/directed The Producers. Anyone could have wrote that and it would have been funny, even a german. If you can't laugh at the nazis now then what can you do.
Right, but it seems that Garry Shandling takes exception to it. While you and I may think he should react a certain way we can also understand where he's coming from. It's a little much for some of these ppl to be angry at the guy for not being able to laugh it all off. I think even Garry wants to be able to laugh it off but he just can't.
Gervaise hated this because he wasn't in control. He's comfortable when he's mocking less quick witted stooges. Shandling wasn't giving Gervais an inch. They hate each other, no doubt about it. Clash of the egos.
@GRJones92hk oh dear wat a relief i didnt wanna say im more intelligent but thanks i didnt wanna come across as arrogant but u were thinkn on the right lines ,and in regards u know who's better PETER COOK OO yes boooooo , look we hav different tastes look im not sayn ur gay nothing wrong the opera ,ballat and poetry good luck to ya its just that u TAKE the weight on ur knees really well when watchn comedy thats all
@GRJones92hk hahah so u went and did research well done im glad ur not anal retentive no what a relief, of cause he goin to interview some1 he admires until he meet he that is found out he was a fat lipped jew cunt ,larry david didnt carry on like a cunt ,this two have different sytles hard too differ but ricky's an annoyn cunt but personally he is funnier he steps outside himself way more this jew has no expression his rubbish
@canheorCARNEY Ok, ok, I respect your opinion over who you think is better. Just, I'm sticking with Ricky Gervais. By anally retentive, you mean I'm someone who is willing to put thought and effort into my opinions, then, thank you, I appreciate your compliments. You're not as thick as I thought you were. I'm now gonna go listen to some other funny Jews - Woody Allen, Larry David, Jon Stewart, Lenny Bruce. Oh, I think non-expression is called being deadpan btw, but you knew that, right ...?
@GRJones92hk not takn sides hahaha nice 'segway' i thought u said uummm garry was a real expert compared to whom??? that sounded to me like takn a sides ....now your backtrackin, his not the bloke down the street 'ricky wasnt a professional writer or actor he worked in an office like he said, that sounds the bloke down the street now doesnt it ?
@canheorCARNEY You are right. I am taking sides. The 'bloke down the street' - who worked for the BBC and, on radio, before making The Office - just doesn't match up to Gary Shandling - whom, 'the bloke down the street', incidentally, admires a great deal, as he states earlier on in this interview - in terms of subtleness in humour. Not sure if you've watched Larry Sanders. Be interesting to know if you have. Btw, I think The Office is as good as it. Just Shandling is more talented. My opinion.
@GRJones92hk A few words from our Messiah, Ricky Gervais - "Gary Shandling is the perfect comedian, with a perfect career, he's a brilliant stand-up, with a particular voice, he's a brilliant writer ... Larry Sanders ... the classiest sit-com of all-time" . I've changed sides - I know, I just can't stick to one side - I'm with Ricky!
Ricky thinks it doesn't exist; but inside somewhere he still believes - I think the relationships he has on a personal level (his girlfriend - who I'm assuming they commit only to one another) shows that he has SOME value/beliefs; SOME ground that he isn't willing to mock. Another people-slap-on-the-face; if you were looking for a comedian that could destroy anything and everything you won't find it here.
For like two years, every single episode of the Larry Sanders show was on youtube, somebody uploaded each one, like 80 episodes in three parts and they were up for a long time and I watched every one. It was great. I think I'll buy the DVDs, i miss that show.
There's a lot of self-loathing going on with Shandling. In his interviews with Sharon Stone & Alec Baldwin for the Larry Sanders DVD, you get the impression he goes out of his way sometimes to keep people at a distance, not because he dislikes them, but because he doesn't feel he deserves them. Whether I'm right or wrong, he's certainly a complicated cunt, that's for sure.
People think Gervais was genuinely insulted by gary not pouring him coffee? no, gervais pretended to be offended which Gary didnt really get, and gary was not trying to emulate ricky at all.
@njqnjq Spot on! Ricky's comedy talent is left wanting here by someone who is a real expert. All these Ricky lovers should chart his comedy career. He had a hit with The Office, which I can't deny, is brilliant. Extras, was a real stretch - copied off Shandling. His stand-up - copied off Stewart Lee. His podcasts - an embarassing attempt to be like Peter Cook. His films ... not even gonna go there. These others worked at comedy.
@GRJones92hk its funny how clever u think u r, but one element u failed to realise is that this jubba lip jew cunt (that takes himself to seriously) has had his little parents wipe nappy cream on his ass his whole life, e.g. acting school and all the rest and still had other actors carry is shows the larry sanders show he was a back drop, where ricky is the bloke down the street that said fuck it ill make a show. at the end of the day ricky's moments in comedy history will be remember firstly
@canheorCARNEY Remembered by who though ... I don't think I'm clever, you think I think I'm clever. He's not really the bloke down the street though, is he! He's got certain talent. I'm not taking sides with the 'jew cunt', not sure what you're capable of, I'm just trying to get some perspective on this Ricky Gervais phenomenon. Anyway, doubt I'm gonna get any sort of response from you, you seem to have too much invested in Ricky Gervais.
Why is it that you English morons cannot differentiate between you're and your? You're means you are, your means your. How complicated is that to understand? Sort your education out.
@hippotoast Like Americans saying 'Could care less' and other grammatical homicides. Listen, you get morons both side of the Atlantic, Sir. No need to generalise as ignorance is not a virtue.
I don't think it should have put Ricky off of doing the series. It wasn't THAT bad. It had it's funny parts, it's just a slight personality clash. Sure, the other ones were better but every series of every show EVER has better and worse episodes.
I don't know what's funnier, the program or the comments here. I'd forgotten about Garry and Larry Sanders show, but this has brought back fond memories.
I don't get why so many people are ripping on Shandling or Gervais. It's not like they hate each other, they are just making jabs at each other -- They're fucking comedians!
Boxing lessons, put Shandling in the ring against Russel Brand and he wouldn't even be in the ring. Obnoxious c..t.
Yes when you watch the Larry Sanders show, the Office does borrow heavily from it. BUT THE ENGLISH OFFICE IS BETTER.. Your not Woody Allen Gary and no one in the Uk would be as ignorant as to compare you to him. Keep buying our Harry Potter Shit and well keep buying your compuuters. Get me that cup of tea c...t LOL
"I had a dog once that I was very close to that I thought wanted to have sex with me"-thats why Gervais wanted to meet Shandling,he is a genius!Off the cuff and impromptu, he kills!
I've quite enjoyed the interview, but I noticed one obvious cut, which It seems there haven't been many of in this interview...Garry looks at Ricky strangely, I guess talking about the way he looks...odd
A big part of the problem is Shandling's inexpressive, Botoxed face. Makes him hard to read. But neither is he truly offended nor Gervais truly insulted. They respect each other's work, expected to make a connection and simply failed. Bad chemistry. It's just a weird interview and they both know it.
Well you dig gervais' humor because they are characters he plays, the flaws dont impact on real people. The difference here is the flaws are real, and he's a fucking arsehole to a guy who's just trying to interview him. Nothing funny about the man.
i love the slight awkwardness of this show its classic gervais. he shouldn't have cancelled the rest i thought it was great. i loved the larry sanders show. i thought they played well off of each other..
Hmmm...I've watched this a few times now and, maybe I'm being generous, but I think Shandling thinks he's being funny. It seems like he's trying to emulate Ricky's sarcastic type of humour, but doesn't quite pull it off. And, I think, Ricky really is offended by the coffee thing! There's such a gap between US & Brit humour, and that's what's caused the awkwardness. Or maybe Shandling's just a cunt :)
@Ellie8969 i think, ricky really isnt offended by the coffee thing! whats the matter with you? you've watched it a few times and you have no idea what it contains.
@Ellie8969 i was aware other people had opinions, just because you only learnt that nugget of information recently doesnt mean you have to tell it to everyone you meet. the trouble is your opinion is extremely misinformed and it caused me pain to see it being expressed, so i think i have the right to object to it.
@JacquesBrel11 Truthfully, I have no idea what you're on about. What "nugget of information"? Are you mentally ill? Please just go away. That's the problem with the internet, people like me are forced into communicating with people I would cross the street to avoid - like you. I passed my opinion on a clip I have watched, that's all. You on the other hand are a rude and obnoxious twat with nothing better to do than insult (or try to) people online. How sad. You have my pity. Now get lost.
@Ellie8969 you have my pity, you rude, obnoxious and retarded twat. you accuse me of trying to insult people online, but you're the one who called me a 'shiteater'. the 'nugget of information' i was referring to was obviously that other people have opinions - i was doing something called sarcasm, which went over your head both in that comment and in the video. i would also cross the street to avoid you if you decided to venture outside.
@Ellie8969 rickys not honestly offended he's just using the rudeness of pouring yourself a glass and not offering the guest one against him..: but you may be right about the emulation thing - love ricky
@equalitykills Unless you were there, how do you know? Ricky cancelled the rest of the series after this particular interview because it had gone so badly. Best buds they ain't - and I do think he was offended (a bit) by the coffee thing. Not massively, of course - but Shandling was rude and RG responded as anyone else would. But having said that, I don't think Shandling was being deliberately offensive, just trying some Brit humour and failing :)
At 0:24 he's speaking directly to Ricky.

Zidean007 3 months ago
@llteejay Are you being sarcastic? If not, you're way off.
jazz4 3 months ago

TheHotLunchShow 4 months ago
like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Gervais's craft was influenced by American artists, whom he then bettered, both commercially and creatively. Simple.
adsh83 5 months ago

He didn't know who that was.
thelundquist 6 months ago
I just watched this entire series of videos. It's not awkward at all. It comes off as very natural and very funny. Both comedians are displaying their own trademark sense of humor. It's exactly the type of conversation I'd expect from these two guys. I think that a lot of people just don't get that these guys are constantly joking with each other. This is how comedians talk with one another. The description is very misleading.

@whatiwasgoingtosay i think its awesome that English people don't get Gary Shandling because he's got a subtle sort of mean humor, almost regal and sarcastic, but constantly. i love ricky gervais and gary shandling, i thought the video was excellent.
DerfRellim11 7 months ago
@DerfRellim11 I spent the first four parts of this trying to decide if it was genuinely awkward or a very well played part.. just reading a few interviews they both did afterwards and apparently it was genuine. Shandling said he was doing another set of interviews in a totally different style, and walked in to an atmosphere that threw him. Gervais spent most of it either salvaging or doing what he does when he's nervous i.e. laugh and make it worse.
Was as it appears, by the looks.

@DerfRellim11 eh? you've never been to England, or met an Englishman before have you? or seen any British humour since Monty Python
alsdaftable 6 months ago
@alsdaftable don't get all upset and make assumptions because the word regal and English aren't synonyms in every sentence. i'm 100% brittish american and i have been to england on a few occasions, and since i'm commenting a ricky gervais video, i'd say i have a pretty good handle on the whole brittish comedy thing being the video is about how one of the greatest brittish comedians of all time developed his style from an AMERICAN actor.

Great from both sides. he came to interview Garry and got ALOT of information out of him.
freekjoy 10 months ago
@freekjoy thats definitely true. but in a way it could have been better if they had simply gotten along better in the beginning. they did not get on 'well'. they just got on. idk if it would have been funnier if their had been a less-hostile-repoir b/t them... maybe... but it just didn't aggregate and it was what it was and still very funny.

@coolmountains25
I seriosly enjoyed Garrys input tho and was worth just as much
freekjoy 10 months ago
@freekjoy i agree it was a very interesting interview, with a lot of great reflection, ideas on comedy, and comedic orgins/general information. the viewing was unpleasant tho b/c shandling couldn't get over his ego. larry didn't consider ricky an equal, and it was a stellar interview. this was a good one scraped by, by two comedic geniuses. i was just disappointed that it didn't go better in the very beginning it could have been completely different and really good like the larry interview.
coolmountains25 10 months ago
@coolmountains25 I think you're dead wrong. Ricky is probably a psychopath and Shandling, being a jew, rightfully picked up on his flamin racist heart.

"You and the guy who named this video are idiots because if they're not doing "setup punchline' jokes then you can't understand when the comedians are joking." and why does that matter at all?

pandpinjapan 10 months ago
I think the look on Ricky's face when interview is over says it all. Shandling is a nobody now. And Ricky a super star. So the winner of this battle is clear.
benoibe 10 months ago
Shandling really is doing his best to unnerve Gervais, even to the extent of daring to suggest that Gervais is gay. Watch the way that he asks about the clothes that Ricky is wearing and then says that what he is wearing makes him "look straighter". The way that he hangs on that and stares down Ricky with a patronizing smile is painful. And you can see in Ricky's face at that moment that he is realizing how Shandling is actually personally attacking him, and for the first time there is no laugh.
Eyeman25 10 months ago
@Eyeman25 i disagree, Shandling is a master of sarcasm and self deprecation. He wasn't taking a pot shot at Gervais here, he was just subtlety hinting and making fun of his own sexuality. Like the coffee scene prior, Gervais is just being slow. Shandling is a true comic genius and a student of human behavior.
toffee20 10 months ago
@toffee20 Wow i think that ya maybe you're both right and shandling was insulting gervais and also himself. i thought the way shandling said "it makes me look straighter" was more self-invoked too... but b/c of the sour-repoir you get the sense it was also directed at gervais as well. Shandling was saying he likes his gay ass shirt b/c it still makes him look straighter than gervais's get up. so he was insulting him. but Gervais is the man for putting up with shandling's bs. anger neurosis etc.
coolmountains25 10 months ago

shunka9 1 year ago
Sad to say, but Shandling is clearly the bigger man in the interview. He's just not interesting in being clownish. It's kind of sad, because I watch it and know that Shandling was a mentor to so many people on his show, and Ricky is still stuck on making childish humour with his (e.g "uncomfortable moments"). It's like Sarah Silverman said about Larry Sanders: People copied the wrong aspects of the it. They should have copied the process, making the characters real, not the "edgy" comedy.

i must be crazy. i don't get the thing on the net about this being a "disasterous" interview ... i didn't think it was that bad at all. being a long time fan of both ricky and garry, its exactly what i expected. they were trying to have a serious interview and be funny at the same time ... it didn't quite work, but i've certainly seen interviews that were much worse. the only genuinely awkward moment i saw was right at the very end ... it just seemed like they didn't know how to end it.

@werewoofer
i agree. It took a couple of views and some thinking about because what they both did and how they did it was very clever but the tension in this interview is mostly part of the act. I think there may have been one or two genuinely tense moments but the whole thing is so well done that its hard to say if any of it was genuine or if the whole thing was just comedy.
cptamazing526 1 year ago
Garry just schooled Ricky in awkward situational comedy by putting him right in the middle of it. For the entire interview.
Tanzarian 1 year ago
Shandling: Let's get what we need from you
Gervais: absolutely.
I keep hoping they'll work together on something someday.
cockad00dle 1 year ago

My opinion.
GRJones92hk 1 year ago
@GRJones92hk A few words from our Messiah, Ricky Gervais - "Gary Shandling is the perfect comedian, with a perfect career, he's a brilliant stand-up, with a particular voice, he's a brilliant writer ... Larry Sanders ... the classiest sit-com of all-time" . I've changed sides - I know, I just can't stick to one side - I'm with Ricky!
GRJones92hk 1 year ago
Gary consciously stops comedy and looks for love.

@JacquesBrel11 You freaking moron. Guess what - other people have opinions! Get a life, shiteater :)
Ellie8969 1 year ago
@Ellie8969 i was aware other people had opinions, just because you only learnt that nugget of information recently doesnt mean you have to tell it to everyone you meet. the trouble is your opinion is extremely misinformed and it caused me pain to see it being expressed, so i think i have the right to object to it.
JacquesBrel11 1 year ago
@JacquesBrel11 Truthfully, I have no idea what you're on about. What "nugget of information"? Are you mentally ill? Please just go away. That's the problem with the internet, people like me are forced into communicating with people I would cross the street to avoid - like you. I passed my opinion on a clip I have watched, that's all. You on the other hand are a rude and obnoxious twat with nothing better to do than insult (or try to) people online. How sad. You have my pity. Now get lost.
Ellie8969 1 year ago
@Ellie8969 you have my pity, you rude, obnoxious and retarded twat. you accuse me of trying to insult people online, but you're the one who called me a 'shiteater'. the 'nugget of information' i was referring to was obviously that other people have opinions - i was doing something called sarcasm, which went over your head both in that comment and in the video. i would also cross the street to avoid you if you decided to venture outside.

@Ellie8969 rickys not honestly offended he's just using the rudeness of pouring yourself a glass and not offering the guest one against him..: but you may be right about the emulation thing - love ricky
equalitykills 1 year ago
@equalitykills Unless you were there, how do you know? Ricky cancelled the rest of the series after this particular interview because it had gone so badly. Best buds they ain't - and I do think he was offended (a bit) by the coffee thing. Not massively, of course - but Shandling was rude and RG responded as anyone else would. But having said that, I don't think Shandling was being deliberately offensive, just trying some Brit humour and failing :)
Ellie8969 1 year ago
@Ellie8969 yes I'm sure in trying to be the best comic ever he has time to gather his values and beliefs together to know when he's gone too far
anne frank, pedophilia, jew-hatin, oh but forget to pour me a cup a tea and thats too far. Hmm, must be because he's british eh?

@equalitykills People like you are so peculiar. Someone offers an opinion that you don't agree with and you get all huffy. Just grow up, will you.
