So that's another mention of The Nightmare Child. Big enough to swallow a capital ship! Inside it "the wild and fire" and kills you thousands of times somehow. A corrupt Tardis vortex creature probably. Don't think they've done that shtick yet. The only discrepancy is he just now said it was present in the first year of the time war (implying the war lasted 2 or more years), but in The End of Time in front of The Master he says the Nightmare Child appeared only in the "last days of the war."
@saeklin However, you have to keep in mind that it was a *Time* War; a linear progression of events is not required where time travel is concerned. I theorize that Davros flew back to the first year of the war, perhaps to the date of a pivotal loss for Dalek forces; assuming the Nightmare Child was created towards the end of the war, Davros may have tried to unleash it earlier in time to turn the tide of battle, and the War, in his favor.
"Your voice is different, and yet... its ARROGANCE is unchanged."
And the hearts of every fan of the original series skipped two beats and plummeted into their stomachs.
Out of all the classic DW villains to revive, I am so glad they picked Davros. At the same time, though, I wish they'd picked a different villain for Donna Noble to defeat; as if turning her into a deus ex machina wasn't bad enough, they had her defeat the greatest psychotic genius in media history.
@Nitrinoxus I've been thinking about your point about Donna being a Deus Ex Machina, and I respectfully disagree.
Dalek Caan has been manipulating events for a long time, now. He's seen things unfold, and not for the better. He knows The Doctor, Davros, and Donna. He states that specific events would have happened anyway, but he gave history a little push, just to be sure. He foresaw Donna alone in the dying Tardis; I think he influenced her to touch the container with the Doctor's hand.
@jamalshookup The operative term in your conclusion being 'I think'.
But tell me... Prior to this episode, did it seem at all likely that Donna Noble would be the one to save all of creation from the greatest madman this show has yet produced?
@Nitrinoxus Well,...no. But, I wasn't looking for Davros before TSE/JE, though I knew he had to make a return when the Daleks did.
As Davros, referring to Dalek Caan, points out to the Doctor, '...a single simple Dalek suceeded where Emperors & Time Lords did not.' And, all throughout TSE/JE, something seemed to be 'tuning into her'; she looked as if something unseen were 'speaking to' her, or at least, communicating with her, directing her -- or at least, suggesting a course of action.
@Nitrinoxus (cont) Donna never thought she was importatnt -- she'd always denigrate herself, saying, 'I'm just a temp from Chiswick.'
But none of this would've worked if it hadn't been for Davros himself. The energy blast from his hand triggered the metacrisis, so he himself unknowingly set up his own downfall.
'A single simple Dalek' & 'a Temp from Chiswick' -- who would have thought those two could bring down such an enemy?
Sometimes the simplest (thing or way) is also the most effective.
@jamalshookup Thing is, a deus ex machina is defined as: "an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation, esp. as a contrived plot device in a play or novel."
@jamalshookup So, you're saying you, as an audience member with no knowledge of the writing process for Journey's End, expected Davros's electrical blast (supposedly just as strong as a Dalek laser) to make Donna a genius and ultimately ruin his plans for creation-wide genocide?
(Clarification: a DEM is contrived by nature, which is why writers are typically told to avoid using them. They can be used in such a manner so as to not be contrived, but this is extraordinarily difficult.)
@Nitrinoxus No. I didn't know what to expect. I saw her getting knocked off her feet & thrown a short distance. I'm not sure if Davros' energy is as *strong* as that from a Dalek gun; but it is *different*. Donna remarks that that blast triggered the metacrisis, even saying, 'Thank you, Davros,' when fouling his plans. A Dalek gun would not have worked that way.
I should have typed, 'A Deus Ex Machina' is contrived, & used when the writer...' A bit in a hurry, & didn't re-think or edit things.
@jamalshookup Exactly. While there was some foreshadowing that *something* was going to happen, in the end, it was an unexpected event saving a seemingly hopeless scenario... which is, per its definition, a textbook deus ex machina. QED.
@Nitrinoxus But doesn't foreshadowing *preclude* 'Deus Ex Machina'? DEM just suddenly drops in on proceedings from the sky (literally, in the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans; it was eye-rolling even back then). And, if we were all clued in that *something* was going to happen (little clues throughout the season all pointed to Donna being the character to watch), and when it did, didn't that eliminate DEM as an unfair means to stop Davros?
Master is one bad dude but Davros he created the most evil creatures in the universe I dont care if he had been dead for like 20 years Davros will always be The Doctors arch enemy.
Hell NO........The master wasn't the doctors arch nemesis. He was the best enemy as the doctor pointed out.No Davros is and always will be the GREATEST Arch nemesis.
@MarkyVanHelsing debatable. i love em both but the Master is the Doctor's equal in so many ways plus they have a deeper personal history. Davros however is far more intelligent. or at least his insanity doen't hold back his intelligence as much as in the case of the Master. i think the Master would arguably more dangerous tot he universe at large if he wasn't obsessed with the Doctor. i sorta feel that at crunch time he couldn't actually kill the Dr whereas Davros can
*figure appears on full screen*: Welcome to my new Empire---
Doctor: Who the Hell are you?!
Darth Sidious: Oh! Sorry I hacked into the wrong network. I thought you were Luke Skywalker
Doctor: That's a relief. I thought you were Davros *phones up Sarah Jane, Jack and Martha* it's OK it's not who I thought it was. Things are a little bit better now.
you and me both. His voice is just chilling. And I know from watching him in "Shock Headed Peter" that he's just as mesmerising in person on stage... In my opinion one of the greatest actors of our age.
i wish they would bring in 1 villian they keep around who challanges the doctors intelect and skill. i had 1 idea myself. but i don't know if it would fit.

Is that not what happened?
Nitrinoxus 21 hours ago
@Nitrinoxus I would says it's been set up, so it's not entirely unexpected. Dalek Caan set it up so that Davros would trigger it and undo himself.
A 'Deus Ex Machina' is contrived, but only when the writer has hit a wall and is afraid to let events play out as they've unfolded.
