Sticking to hypothesis, yes. Belts will only be so long because they have to be transported. If you could use a reliable hopper and a crap ton of ammo cans, you could keep it firing for ever, though it would certainly at some point encounter a jam. ALL automatic weapons, no matter how reliable, can and do jam. It is the nature of auto loaders.

Would you agree that "Best" is an opinionated statement? Yes, it is a very well designed machine gun. I look at best objectively and with a specified definition; A machine gun that has the longest service period, the most reliable functions, and the least number of failures, as well as the highest casualty per rounds fired.

To look at the most reliable and still used machine gun, I would lean toward the AK-47. Yeah, I know it sounds corny, but it is still made and used today.

i would go along with the M2 being the best MG, it had a much bigger effect in the gun world then the MG42, dont get me wrong..the 42 is a monster. but the M2 has been in service longer, used (at the time) a revolutionary round and is used by more countries

the 42 just had a higher ROF then this, used a pretty standard round at the time and still does today

then again, one is an LMG and the other a HMG...so can you really compare them? ;) or just the best in their category?

@TheAlexagius Thats kind of an ignorant statement to make about the MG42, if you did some research you would find out that there are new versions of the MG, however its no longer the 42, and it has become a light machine gun as opposed to the browning that is now primarily used for anti-air craft. The MG3 is a workhorse in the armed forces around the world. Say what you want about being on the losing side, but if you ask anyone in WW2 what gun they feared most, it would be the German made MG42.

@TheAlexagius And the browning that is used today is not the same as what was used in WW2 either, you're talking about modernizing weapons and saying the the MG42 is not around anymore, well neither is the Browning from WW2, that was a .30 caliber gun. The MG fires at a rate of 1200 rounds per minute, while the Browning fires at only half that rate. And yes they do serve different purposes now, thus you won't see a solider carrying a .50 Browning on the battlefield as opposed to an MG.

@sumtinlikethat I like the M240 better. The .50 is a boss, don't get me wrong. But the 240 is a lot easier to maneuver, easier to aim, handles better when mounted on a vehicle, and is easier to perform corrective action on. Let's face it, the .50 is reliable as hell, but if it's having a bad day, you get pretty worn out trying to constantly pull the charging handle. The 240 can also do most everything a .50 can, such as disable a vehicle, punch through walls, and scare the bad guys behind cover.
