  • I wouldn't try to self lern how to play an erhu because of the techniques. I have been playing the violin for 14 years now, so right hand fingering is not an issue, but I don't want to learn the techniques (i.e. bow hold, bowing etc.) because if you learn it wrong, it's hard to unlearn. Sadly there are no teachers in my area.

  • I plan on self teaching myself, it doesn't seem all that hard, and if I practice continiously, then maybe I can get as good as this guy one day.

  • @ekeeywaka tell me if tat works out becuase i am trying to learn on my own but its hard

  • @hanjadrew frd = friend haha. It depends where you live. Do you know any Chinese music lessons offered nearby where you live? Even a Chinese piano teacher may help. Go to those music stores, and ask them if they teach er hu, or know anybody who teaches er hu. That's how I found mine.

  • @Casshyr haha thanks so much

  • This song is actually not that hard. I know how to play this song too, and I've only been playing for 3 years. Sure it's hard to play at the level that he does, but there are a tons of other songs out there that are harder

  • @Casshyr how did you learn this i wanna learn and have one but no teacher

  • @hanjadrew yea you need a teacher for this...it's not like a guitar where there are a lot of online tutorials. You do need a teacher. Or perhaps you can get a frd who knows how to play..sry..but i do have a teacher. I don't think self-teaching (unless you are musically gifted) is going to work here.

  • @Casshyr ok thanks do you know how i can find one and also what is a frd

  • this guy be jammin

  • dude this song is everywhere!

  • people are still doing the chuck norris jokes?? really?? jesus..

  • This is how chuck norris plays the erhu

  • The most famous erhu song!!!!! Everyone knows this!!!

  • I want to buy one an erhu but I think I'd drive everyone nearby crazy.

  • damn how come i cant play it like that!!!

  • Got more video's of He Wang Bao? I love his style!!!!!!!

  • 14 people who dislike must be running with the horses now ~

    or

too engrossed with the music till their hands are shaking with the strings of the erhu thus clicking on the 'Dislike'

  • splendido lui l'ha eseguito alla perfezione

  • parfait !!!!!! magnifique!!!!!!

  • parfait !!!!!!

  • china's own kirk hammet

  • OMG this is so amazing! I was like :O through the whole performance!

I'm gonna work so much harder! XD

  • okey 14 people who disliked......you all....do better now!!!!!!!!

  • absolute fucking legend, makes me wanna ride a horse!

  • Love the headbanging at 1.20

  • burnin strings

  • I'm surprised there's no smoke coming from the strings! Haha! This guy's a real master!

  • no emotions

just do his skills skills skills

Chinese guys do always look hard during perfoming their master gosu skills

  • @Frodofroehlich no emotions my ass, he looks like he's totally lovin what he plays

  • @Frodofroehlich no emotion? do you know what's the meaning of emotion?!

  • is he practicing head fakes for soccer practice later?

  • The erhu is one of the most beautiful instruments I have ever heard in my life.

  • very easy to learn, if u know how to play a violin than this will be easy

  • HOLY SHIT, did he just use his erhu to make the sound of a horse whinnying at 1:23?

  • I heard that Kung fu masters play the erhu.

  • @7eyedviper True kung fu masters can KILL just by playing the erhu.

  • he plays the fast part soo much better than i can. dam..

this is a relatively easy song btw.

but this guys is sooo pro. im a nub.

  • Uwaaah!

  • fuck this is insane lol

  • I really want one of these I was about to buy one in Chinatown in San Fran, are they very hard to learn to play to learn just some basic stuff?

  • @Nisp2 I don't know much about it, but I am a pianist myself and I'd assume that it's pretty hard considering you only have two strings and a bow to work with. There's most likely some technique to it, but I'm having a hard time picturing myself hitting the right notes with it.

Then again, as I said, I don't know much about it. By all means, you should definitely buy one if you want to learn how to play it! :)

  • @Nisp2 I was in Chinatown NYC and a performer playing one of these on the street saw my curiosity as he played and kindly gave me his seat and allowed me to try to play it. He showed me some basics for a few minutes. I play piano, drums, mandolin, and other more common instruments and off the bat it is more tricky to play. Don't be discouraged though. If you want to buy one you must be an artist and therefore understand that all arts have a learning proses to go through.

  • damn it ... he´s awesome O.O

  • Excellent posture!

  • This brings me sooo many memories from when my Taiwanese friend came and played this at the talent show. :)

  • HOLY SHIT. YOU CAN REALLY HEAR THE SOUNDS OF HORSES NEIGHING AT THE END.

This man is a true master. -worships-

  • 0:45 requires ridiculous amounts of practice

  • Anyone know the performer's Chinese name? Or well, the characters in Chinese?

  • that has only 2 strings?!! wow

  • Awesome!

  • I want to learn that, too!!!

  • Bravo...maravilloso

  • The horse neighing sound at the end determines your erhu playing ability, no horse neighing, it's like no lum pah. (For the meaning of lum pah go check it out with your Hokkien friends.)

  • Wow, awesome stuff. I remember seeing a young girl who must've been about 12 or 13 playing this song on a street in Hangzhou, and I have loved it ever since. This is probably the best version on youtube.

  • 0:45 is very difficult to learn. Still can't, although I can do the whole song easily. :)

  • Virtuosic

  • Brilliant!

  • I am going to get a erhu. In tibet it is called a piwang (close country near by).

He really played very good. 10 out of 10!

  • beautiful.....gosh i play the western violin ( not very well:-( ..) and this must be so much harder.....I love this thank you for sharing he is really amazing.. it sounds great... really a cool instrument:-)

  • This ones for you Bukowski...

  • I love at the end where he does the horse neighing.

  • this is more than astounding!!!

man i have an erhu, it's truly the mpst amazing thing to play. i'm trying to learn this song, but that "throwing" part at 0:45 is way too advanced.

exxcellent song and an erhu classic!!

  • Perhaps he's a drummer. It looks like a slightly exaggerated, classic-grip, snare roll finger technique. But seriously, he does an excellent rendition.

  • i was visiting china and a student at one of the universities i visited played this song but in a more up beat techno version and it blew me off my ass

  • Did you get a name? Sounds awesome.

  • I miss my erhu. :(

  • oh.

    <3

my heart just cried with happiness.

  • excellent! he is really enjoying his instrument!

  • 0:45 I think this is hard! I'm still trying to learn this song :D

  • Wow.

    I WANT AN ERHU! :)

  • i love the sound of the erhu ~ can someone please tell me the names of some other famous pieces i can look up!?

  • Yu Bei Ballad and Dance to the Moon are a couple of my favorites.

  • Awesome!!!

  • bravo!!!!!!

  • giddy up and go- i like my hosses to run fast too!

  • Why is everyone rushing the "Horse Racing" so much? Huang Haihuai composed it in a slower pace for a reason. Great skill nevertheless.

  • Last time, I checked it was not "the cattle race".

  • amen.

  • You can create the impression of speed without playing the erhu like your about to piss on yourself. But disregard my opinion and send your brilliant finding to the composer himself.

  • In the score it says, 奔放,热烈. Which means unrestrained, bold and passionate. I don't think 黄海怀 intended for it to be as slow as you think. What score are you looking at?

  • @cacalacapoo meh I think the lack of dynamic variation is more fitting for the song. races are exciting. they don't wax and wane.

  • Is the horse not a magnificent creature both at a trot and in full gallop?

  • where could I get the sheet music for this song I like this song very much so I want to learn this one.

  • I was in the process of writing one by ear,.. i didn't know there's a music sheet for this. where can I get it?

  • I found one on google, but it's not written in westernized format.

  • get it from me.lol

  • I finally got it! I photostated from a guy at work cause his brother plays erhu in highschool. but its numbers instead of your regular ol' musc notes. Woot?

  • first and second fingers? :0

  • @fazlinamiza lol yeah. We kinda convert the notes to numbers.

  • This guy is.....AMAZING :-)Chinese style!

  • HOLY ####

    makes me feel low

  • 好強哇~~~

  • Does anyone know where I can buy a cd of this kind of music on the net. Or the names of CD's with this kind of music. Thanks for any responses.

  • you can find erhu (and general chinese)music in most music shops, look in the world section. good cds to get are "like waves against the sand" and "the art of the erhu". if there not in the shops just google.

  • Google ' The Internet Chinese Music Archive ' and the first site that comes up (ibiblio . org) has free traditional, folk and revolutionary songs.

  • eastern legends from Taiwan played it with a slight western touch. They go back from the states in about a month.

  • sigh

i cant even play this song:X

i can only play the first part, then i cant play it anymore

  • very impressive! i want to learn this instrument.

  • pure skill

  • i love this guy...he's SOOO ASIAN!!!!!!

  • fantastico

  • best erhu player EVER!

  • l like the way he dropped the bow

  • fantastic

  • Erhu strings nowadays are not made of silk anymore. Most of them are metal or synthetic strings. Silk strings are extinct.

And, talking about rosin, I just lent my friend my violin rosin for his Erhu when I stumbled upon this video.

What a coincidence.... Haha xD Btw, I like this song. And the player. 5/5

  • i think they make the string nowadays out of nickel and copper and zinc

  • well played but could have had sme more dynamic variation. I have a fantastic recording of this.

  • just practice enough

you'll heck of be like him

  • sweet

    i play it too

  • This is fantastic. I was lucky enough to take erhu lessons myself. Today first class and the teacher played this. It's a great song!

  • hmmm....im waiting for my erhu but that guy kind of looks like the North Korean Dictator....

  • Magnifique, j'adore.

  • i really wanna buy and learn this thing...

  • I agree!! I so wanna learn

  • woo! i can play this!

  • this instrumental is wonderfully fine, follow it got it

  • WOW! Fantastic music, he's a really talented player!

  • how difficult is it to play this instrument?

  • Extremely difficult!!!! That instrument is no joke.

  • i guess since there are only 2 strings it's all about technique. do you play(wfranklin)?

  • well itz not THAT hard....i can play it..xDD

studied for 2 months and i can play it pretty well..xD

  • can you send me the sheet music if you have it?

    thanks

  • u wanna play this?? well i'll have to look around for the sheets

  • are they in number notation or traditional style?

  • they're in number notation....almost all sheetmusic for er hu is in numbers

  • how long do you think it would take me to learn this song(keep in mind i have never touched one)?

  • wow...this is like a lvl 3 song...i would say 3-5 months?? or if ur rly fast like 2??

  • my new erhu arrived and i cant even make sound with it... any tips

  • u mean no sund come out when u try to play with the bow? have u applied 'song xiang' on the bow?

  • 松香 (song xiang) means rosin in Chinese.

I do not play the erhu, but I do play the violin.

I am not so sure if there are any special rosin for the erhu bow, but you do need some kind of adhesive on the bow.

This is not bullshit, I know that 松香 is rosin.

  • there is different kinds of rosin for diferent string intruments, the cello has very strong sap, and those are metal strings and the erhu has probaly silk strings and a different kinds of rosin

  • it's more of quality than kind.

theres the fine and medium powder grain, and light and dark rosin

cello, for example, uses medium powder grain because it's more sticky and creates a more mellow tone.

violins USUALLY use fine powder to create good grip and powerful projection, unless you use medium, which will give u warmer tones.

dark rosin gives more grip, which can lead to warm tones, but also can create harsh cracks.

Light gives less grip, but powder is finer, and tone is smoother

  • like i sais the er hu has probaly silk strings, so the rosin might be more so it would probaly need black rosin for grip

  • Oops, I missed that part.

However, strings has nothing to do with the rosin; the rosin is for the bow hair: to protect the microscopic ridges of the hair and to create more grip.

Also, I have seen both light and dark rosin for erhu bows.

The majority (97%-99%) of erhu strings nowadays are made of steel or other synthetic materials.

I doubt that there are even silk strings made nowadays.

  • The erhu doesn't use silk strings...

  • It's not that difficult; violin is harder. But perhaps I just think that because I only recently started violin and have been playing erhu for a few years. xP The major difficulty of sai ma (Horse Racing, this song) is playing it fast, and still making it sound good.

  • they are diffcult in their own ways. duh.

  • are you sure this isn't benjamin sun? i know he played this song and the guy kinda looks like him and i can't find this guy anywhere on the net? o__o

  • You should find something, go to a chinese site instead he's a First Class Performer in China.

  • There's an album by Bela Fleck (banjo), Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Indian slide guitar), and Jie-Bing Chen (erhu), that has a recording of this song. They call it "The Emperor's Mare" though, and play it much slower. The album is called "Tabula Rasa" - check it out!
