You can probably buy one of those radica scannerz from e-bay as i managed to get 2. on there a little while ago. One Green- One Red as there were 4 that were `released` (i think). Got hold of them quite cheap as i was the only bidder on both occasions. Going to give them to my son when he`s a little older.
@TanukiKGA - A seller on e-bay is selling 2 of those scannerz - red and green- there`s 6 days left till bidding ends - They have them listed under scannerz barcode battler
Oh, it would be quite awesome with graphics. That was one of the thoughts behind Barcode World for the famicom :) But I still like it this way, its rpg boiled down to the bone so to say, the very basics. But graphics wouldnt have hurt, no!
@YungReg88 You can try e-bay as i managed to get hold of 2 a little while ago- 1 red 1 Green as there were 3 different one`s - (red, green and blue) They are called Radica Scannerz
Sorry to hear that it got left out in the rain, dude :/ But you know, even though they dont appear that often, they're really not that expensive to get these days if you manage to find one! :)
Glad to hear that more people enjoyed the Barcode Battler. It really is a nice little machine! :)
Yeah, they had a very short time in the spotlight so to say, which really is a shame! I think this concept could've evolved into some really awesome stuff!
I think one major flaw was the name, makes you think of a supermarket checkout, maybe that put people off even before they knew what the game was about :o)
damn this is awesome. Even if it's primitive it still kicks ass.
Btw how much is a game at your local store? In here we don't have stores to sell old games and you can only buy NES games from other guys who sell them online for 10$/each ( if they're good games they're 20$)
Its not really a local game store per se. There IS a place in town where I sometomes get some NES-carts, but thats a "normal" second hand store. Other than that, I get most of my stuff from online auctions. And then its pretty much the same, around 10 or 20 bucks each, with the odd exception for those crazy rare games that goes for hundreds of dollars
Great episode! Never seen or heard about the Barcode Battler! It does look primitive, but swiping cards to determine your strength and hits is an awesome idea! I think if I were addicted to it as a kid, I wouldn't want the cashier to swipe my credit card! I'd do it myself :P Swipe, swipe, swipe... Nice info man... I've never seen the Famicom's Barcode reader.. Hmmmm...
It really is a primitive form of pokemon in a way. Instead of playing a character who explores a world to find monsters, you yourself must explore the real world after barcodes! Its really a neat idea, and its really a shame that it didnt last that long :/
I'd love to see a similar sort of game reinvoked nowadays. This reminds me of some of the cooler, more lasting flash games that don't really require anything other than starting up and playing.
There is a semi-similar game for the DS out in japan. Its a Monster Rancher sequel, and you create monsters to battle other monsters, by drawing what ever you want with the ds. The game that interprets what areas are filled with colour I guess, and creates a monster!
Oh yeah, I remember that series now! I think one of the games on the PS2 did something similar with other discs, like CDs and DVDs, which could turn up a specific kind of monster. It's all really cool stuff.
I remember reading about one of them for the first playstation. I wanted that game SO bad, but it never got released in my hometown. And back then, going online buying games wasnt really something I would've thought of even!
But I still havnt seen an actual copy of that game :/
Yeah, once getting into online buying and stuff, the realm and method of my gaming increased so much. I still have fond memories though of actually waiting for a game and picking it up at a store...
But hey, it's not like many stores of our youth had everything we wanted either!
Shees, now that we're talking about it. I remember when games didnt have release dates. They just sort of.. showed up somehow XD Some magazines said "oh, it will be out in.. march or something", but nobody really knew when. All of sudden, there just was a new box on the shelves!
That was always really fun for me. I used to be really big on renting games and only buying ones I knew would be worth the purchase (like games that you could never get bored of)--it was so cool to see if there were any new games out since the last time. I actually got into RPG games like this: I remember that when I was really young I couldn't tell much of a difference between games, but I'd always look on back the boxes to see some numbers and HP bar. If they had this, I knew I'd like it!
Its the weirdest thing really, the store that rented NES-games in my hometown had never the same games as the ones that were sold in the toystore! I mostly bought games that "looked cool", which burned me on many occasions. I mean. Captain Planet and Werewolf. Still to this day I hate those! ^^
Unfortunatly, growing up in sweden, we didnt see much of rpgs. Sweden mostly bought in games that werent too textheavy back in the day :/
I must be lucky that I don't remember too many of the bad games ^_^ It was awesome to discover some great games though when picking through the selections. It was great to find a game that you knew you could rent again for a great time when nothing else looked any good.
Ouch!
Very cool Johan! I think i told you this before but years ago i worked for Electronics Boutique(Pre-EB/Gamestop) and we sold Barcode battlers in our store.
Now am wondering if the ones we sold and the one you have were one and the same? I can't remember the design of ours but the play style i swear is just the same.
That wouldn't surprise me, John! I know that these and the ones released in the UK are the same, so it should be the same over the pond as well. Designwise, I dont know exactly the differences between this and the model 1. I know that the first model came in white, but I think they had black ones as well. However, if you look at the display of thise one, there are some colour on the different parts of the screen. Im pretty sure that wasnt in there on the first version!
Yeah i was thinking they were all the same too and i did think it was pretty cool to be able to use other barcodes off of soup cans and cereal boxes was cool but i never picked one up.
They're not the easiest getting work sometimes, my friend :) If you use to thick of a tape, the scanner can't read them, and they apperantly have to placed rather precisely to work. But when it works, its a really awesome idea!
Im gonna have to hook up my famicom again, and see if I can Barcode World running on it!
Indeed! They brought along a wave of these sorts of games. Not to mention the awesome Monster Rancher for playstation, where you used CD's! Random generators are awesome! :D
Found my old Barcode Battler a few weeks ago, god dammit i love that thing. So many memories. While i really hated the story about the candy galaxy or whatever it was i loved the enemies. Both the regular manga ones from C-1 game and the card ones. Heh, you don't fuck with Darman. Air dragon was pretty cool too. =)
Haha, yeah, that was a bit weird with all the guilds. And that they measured time in barcodes as well? or something like that? It get rather fuzzy after a while!
Yeah, I really love the design of the characters on the cards, at least the enemies. Jam Bam doesnt really impresse me so to say ;)
Nah, dont be like that, mate! It can actually be a lot of fun once you get into it!
Yep! Thats when i first wanted to try it! I felt like doing this video, since his didnt come with instructions, so he missed some info. But damn funny as you said ^^
it seems fun.

do you need 2 to play 2 player??
Also, nice hair cut!

Hey!
Nope, you only need one Barcode Battler to play two players. Each player scans in his or hers character card, and if they want to, a powerup :)

Veckans höjdpunkt! Eller, ja, det muntrade upp mig efter att nyss kommit hem efter att ha suttit fast i en snödriva med bilen i en halvtimme.
Kul att se battlern in action. Hoppas på att få se hur den fungerar ihop med barcode world.
