  • It's chalk on his upper back to help the bar get grip so it doesn't want to slip down his back any lower.

  • What purpose does the powder serve?

  • great vid. what's the soundtrack?

  • Is this the guy in the green shirt from the world Record bench press vid?

  • when ed coan squats, 3 more people squats with him

  • Stan efferding is on your ass bud

  • love the respect he gives only 2 plates showing that technique is the most important ting

  • @wolflord06 1 plate

  • what's the song?

  • @martinrotar don't know the exact name. It's from the Kill Bill vol. 1 soundtrack.

  • every rep the same, the best no doubt.

  • Ed is a beast, but being a Olympic lifter myself, I consider those to be half squats. As in going to parallel and not ass to grass. My opinion.

  • @vootman your opinion is wrong. My opinion.

  • @vootman Their are definitions of a squat. Below parallel is a squat, your opinion should never matter in exercise.

  • @vootman Olympic Lifters are the true kings of Squats IMO not taking anything away from Ed one of the all time greats! but O.L's go to the floor, often with no belt, wraps, and quite often no spotters! plus, Olympic style Squats are Harder to move more weight This is my experience as a ex Powerlifter now working on my Olympic style Squats but hey! Olympic and Powerlifting both rule!

  • @mikesbbody I disagree

  • @mikesbbody In my opinion IPF Powerlifters are the king of the squat. Malanichev will bury any Oly lifter

  • @biglogstrongman I respect your opinion it's all to do with what you train, and what you train for example a powerlifter may struggle at Oly style squats (I know I am) and vice versa at the end of the day P.L's squat more but I'm saying they use all kinds of gear and don't go even close to the depth of O.Lifters look here on Y.T you will find video's of O.L's squatting up to 800 pounds some with no belt! no spotters, etc Ed will always be the man a Legend! great at all 3 lifts!

  • @mikesbbody hey buddy, your comment is fine but no spotters? what does that prove? the numbers of spotters only ensure the amount of safety for a lifter. olympic lifters might not have a spotter because they can just dump it. same with powerlifters. but then oly lifters use bumper plates and powerlifters just use regular plates. dumping regular plates can dmg them.

  • @vootman Parallel is all you need to pass for a lift in a competition. Parallel is what got him to a 1036 squat. Where did your ATG squat get you?

  • 68 dislikes? Must've been some angry bodybuilders who thought Ronnie or Jay were the strongest LULUL

  • @DreadfulControversy they are stronger than this piece of shit

  • @ironintel Go away, do your research for a month (or, seriously, even just five minutes) and come back and comment. It's for your own good, because you just look like an idiot now.

  • Why has this video got so many dislikes? Ed is the best!

  • Could have gone over 10 reps with the freakin' thing. What the hell.

  • Unreal. One of the very best that has ever put a bar across his back and went into a deep-knee bend. He makes it all look so damn easy. Machine.

Now it's time for me to suit up and head to the gym. Squat day, as you might have imagined!

  • Ed blasts through this set like only he can. Dude just pushes through reps like a machine. Solid as all darn hell. Talk about TIGHT. This video is all sorts of awesome ... and all sorts of inspirational.

  • Not only the greatest powerlifter ever, he is a very humble and nice person. Makes his lifting that much better ;)

  • damn wtf @ end

  • Hey...What's that music ???

  • fast squat

  • i would love to see what his leg press is like

  • Kids, that is called perfect form. I'd be nice to see even just 1% of the idiots at the Y use even 50% of that form.

  • most respectable powerlift squater.

  • What music is this ? I love it !!!

  • He is the best powerlifter to ever compete. Name someone pound for pound better. Amazing

  • Truely magnificent!! And what a finish! =) This man is my hero.... Great motivation to squat day.

  • Ed Coan should be called God

Does anyone know where i can see his 1000+ squats??

  • Ed Coan is just the man period. He's white as fuck too. Tucks his shirt into his sweatpants and wears really short shorts. What a beast.

  • @aznclownwithabigdick that's what im sayin

  • Who in the hell dislikes an Ed Coan video?

  • Ed Coan was simply the best ever. Nobody has ever deadlifted 900+ pounds at his weight class (242) nor ever will I believe. I have seen Ed squat 950 for 2 reps in single ply deep, straps down. I'd like to see somebody do that besides Ed. Even benching he was excellent. Regularly doing 500 lbs. RAW. Best powerlifter of all times no doubt in my mind.

  • What I don't get is how can anyone dislike this video? I find that he is very impressive, even as he ages, and he still uses weight that I haven't even dreamed of touching. I watch this video on a regular basis to amp up my squat days.

  • who is the better powerlifter ed coan or kirk kowalski?

  • @czoraa21 I'd like to say that Kirk is the god of the squat. The weights he did with minimal equipment and walking it out are unmatched in quantity or quality. Ed Coan is the overall best of all time though. You can't dupilicate the things he did at the bodyweights he did them at. Both are fantastic athletes though.

  • machine.685 for 5

  • machine

  • So happy I work out here, best gym in Chicagoland

  • wow this IS inspiration! howd that even happen!? what was bleeding?! what did he pop lol

  • I still have the Powerlifting USA Magazine where he totaled over 2400 lbs @220. At that, there were only about 4 guys to total 2400 and they were all Superheavyweights. ED COAN IS POWERLIFTING!!!

  • Yes, Ed Coan is really the Greatest Powerlifter of All Time, and he is in the sport since the 80's. It is a great pleasure to watch him lifting.

  • The last set: some of the most perfect squats I have ever seen!

  • people should just stop using the word steroid in their comments on youtube about powerlifters and bodybuilders. More than likely, steroids have been in the sport longer than you have been alive. get over it, its nothing new, its a part of the sport deal with it. if your anti-steroids....then DONT FUCKING WATCH, go do your 30lbs curls for girls. and flex your 14" arms in front of every mirror in the gym..remember what louie said....mirrors are for queers

  • was this before or after his accident?

  • amazingly gifted athlete

  • beast

  • Perfect form... its a beautiful thing

  • I can't believe the idiots and losers on here who criticise Ed Coan.Drugs or not he is a fantastically strong man.Can anyone show me another 220 pound man who can lift what he does? Practically everyone else uses steroids anyway. He is one of the strongest humans ever, after the great Paul Anderson.

  • Legend..

  • @guessmynamen00b lololol dont get annoyed just post a vid of you doing anywhere near what i did and ill be impressed, but for now just watch and learn what a real set is all about( chicken legs / parallel )plllleeeaaase!!! i made a comment your just lying!

  • @guessmynamen00b you havent a clue what i can lift and i like women so your wrong on both counts .just checked your vids and surprise surprise non showing how strong you are!!!!!!!

  • It's just a guess, but I'm quite sure gods don't take drugs to assist them in getting super strong :-)

  • damn powerlifting is such a doddle compared to doing a real workout hell be done in about 15 mins all this 1 rep crap ...strong yes but get some 15 /20 reps down ya then see whats hard!!!!

  • @arniemonkey powerlifters do that too, they just focus on getting stronger, not for show like most bodybuilders although some do. Reps are part of a training program but just to increase the major lifts. You can stick to only high reps if you want to have weaker tendons and lower functional strength

  • @RogaJam i can appeciate that (and not calling me a weak ass faggot) but low rep week for me is so much easier than 15s and 20 s no matter how much you put on the bar for 1 rep you dont wanna puke or go home unlike the high reps thats all

  • @arniemonkey add more weight.

  • @wrybeat lol yeah right im right though i know it and you do too 1 rep v 20 ...i know whats harder....so do you more weight ...you do what you can and its still over in 5 seconds

  • @arniemonkey dude set up a barbell with your 5rep max on it for deadlift, then add 20lbs each time you lift it successfully one time, when you fail, remove 20 lbs and do 15 more reps of that weight with 90 seconds rest in between each rep. Then come back and tell me how you feel.

  • and it ain't over in 5 seconds, it hurts like fuck for days. You tear callouses, you feel things "give way" inside of you, your conjuctiva bleeds, your face is covered in blown arteries, your back fucking hates you, your knees are reduced to bags of powder and its a bitch just to sit down and get up.

  • @wrybeat make s you think is it worth it ????lol

  • @arniemonkey. 1) working at such high percentages of your 1rep max will force your body to recruit as much muscle tissue as it can.

    2) doing it repeatedly will increase your neural efficiency so that it can more quickly recruit maximum fibre, to the point that you could lift heavy ass wieghts with minimal warmup

    3) all of your supporting muscles, will get the workout of their lives.

    4) BIG ASS TRAPS

  • @arniemonkey training to push your one rep max has cross overs to both powerlifters and bodybuilders.

with powerlifters, maximum recruitment and force generation is the goal.

With bodybuilders, if you can recruit more fibers, you can do your 10-20 rep sets with more weight. I myself have always trained heavy singles on compound excercise eg: bench (5 reps total, increasing the weight to hit my 1rm on the last) before going into a split doing higher reps, and it has always benefited. Try it :)

  • @arniemonkey just saw your channel. GOD DAMN. Well it more than seems that what you are doing is really working out for you, but I still believe you will benefit from pushing your 5-1 rep ranges for the reasons I stated. cheers.

  • @wrybeat cheers we have different goals but its all tough and we gym rats should be arguing with the armchair critics lol

  • @wrybeat only the people who want it have ever experienced this

  • @wrybeat 1 rep with my 5 rep max wait 90 secs add 20lb go till i fail then drop 20lb and do 15 reps with 90 sec rest between each 1 ...is that right ill give it a go

  • @arniemonkey

Shows how much you know. Work through multiple sets to arrive at a poundage over six or seven hundred pounds and then hit some reps and sets. Repeat weekly. Come back and tell us how it went and how you feel.

I have competed as both a bodybuilder and a powerlifter, each requires severe work ethic and crazy intensity ... in their own ways.

Why must know-nothings always chirp up and spew ignorance and negativity? Just go away.

  • @TheTrueFortress i know its all about intensity oh its not ignorance its experience and i think low reps is easier thats all no need for you( fat powerlifter prob ) to get bitchy with me ill go away and do sme serious leg training wanna join me for a session?

  • @arniemonkey

Well, I have trained with Platz, so I know about higher-rep intensity. Repped 315 in Olympic style, ass-to-ankle for 31 reps. 405 for almost 20. Over 700 for one. Competed as both a bodybuilder and a powerlifter (as was said). Experience? I have trained for over 20 years and have been editor for such magazines as MuscleMag International, etc. Friendly with guys like Platz, Yates, Coan, etc.

    You?

If you're within distance, I'll train with you, sure. PM me. Smash ya.

  • @TheTrueFortress wow thats a dream training with platz we squat about the same apart for the 1 rep max ive done 34 with 315...22 with 405 and 1 rep 580 dont concentrate on 1 rep ..just ya wanna see what you can do ..so smashing me is out of the question bud ..im not slagging your credentials you just started on me..im defending my point thats all oh and theyre on youtube my vids so you can see im no bullshitter...not my best but they were at the time...we both can squat looking at your numbers

  • @arniemonkey

Nice. You're a strong dude. Guess I wouldn't smash ya. But I maintain that whether performing low or high reps, each format requires a different type of intensity. Neither is more tough than the other, in my opinion.

Those rep numbers (not the single) were done two or more years ago. I am much stronger now. Might go for 35-40 w/ 315 and over 20 w/ 405, for fun. Just have to time it to not cut into my powerlifting mandate.

So maybe I would smash ya. Ha, ha

  • @TheTrueFortress im 7 weeks out from a show and next wed i might go for 40 with 315 ,fitness is up but strength is hanging by a thread ,cant be shashed by ya without a fight ,,,gl the 405 is too heavy at the moment so ill forget that and hpoe my numbers hold...

  • @arniemonkey

Good luck with that (hopeful) set of 40 with 315. That is a monster effort. And let me know how your show goes. I assume it's a bodybuilding competition? Stay the course and don't get hurt, man. All the best.

  • @TheTrueFortress if i get it ill post it up and cheers

  • @TheTrueFortress i came 2nd in my comp qualified for the british champs ..didnt make the top 6 grrrr. 5 week s out i tried the 40 reps got 39 ill post it up anyway along with my routine and a full leg session (that should make most people cry)

  • @arniemonkey

Good stuff. Keep at it, brother! And let me know when you post the video of the 39 reps. That sounds awesome, man! Stay strong.

  • Coan is god

  • did he bite his lip?

  • @gmanthebeast1 blood pressure from the lift made his nose bleed

  • Coan is the fuckin man !!! hands down!!!

  • motherfucker spit blood... hardcore.

  • The man is a legend and a very impressive squatter. He made it look easy.

  • for the record there is no one better even with no equipment no one is even close

  • @Thor397 Andrey Belyaev maybe?

  • plz name song

  • Why was he bleeding? Did he bite his cheek?

  • lol, heavy weight makes people hemmorage

  • he is not from this earth!

  • Wait, I saw some vids of this guy competing in the 80's. It's 2010 now and he's still going?

  • nah this is old dude he retired

  • a true legend not even past his peak!!

  • Great to see Ed in training , so methodical , thanks for posting.

  • @bkdmd you guess? I think that's a given... more rest equals better performance!

  • Does any one know how tall he was?

  • 5'6" i think

  • high school 5,11 now he 5,6

  • ED is THE MAN!

  • looks so easy for him. the god of powerlifting

  • Great work / music! Gentleman Ed Coan.

  • he looks like a smaller version of paul anderson, and just as strong

  • doesnt even look hard for him

  • he is my hero

  • Picture perfect. Greatest powerlifter of all time.

  • He's the definition of man.

  • He always makes it look easy!!

  • Do a quick search for squat precision

where detecting perfect, legal squat depth for ANY federation has become an exact science.

  • he's my hero!

  • The Best

  • Drugs or no drugs, Ed is a strong bastard. Did he cheat? I am not a position to say. But I will say that the man is amongst the very greatest of powerlifting royalty. His lifts have all been done with much less "advantaged" technique, and minimal support gear. The sport has become a joke with all this equipment and rule bending.

  • Wtf why was he bleeding

  • Because of the weight when you lift that much weight sometimes you blow a blood vessle

  • This is 2006 VIDEO RIGHT? I am somewhat new to Ed Coan, via YouTube. Can someone school me and tell me if Ed is going to compete again after his knee blowout in 2002?

  • his last comp. that i know of was at the 2007 USPF meet...i think that was his very last meet he said...but who knows he might make another comeback

  • 440/260/400 needless to say...

  • 400/ 250/ n im guessing thats ur deadlift but i do powerclean so 245...needless to say...

  • whats that song called?

  • Battle without honour or humanity by Tomoyatu Hotei or something like that

  • where can i find it? ;)

  • Kill bill soundtrack

  • dont you love when he speaks to the camera and spits blood...

  • okay guys i wana ask u a question, i love ed coan like crazy but i wana know if that true that he used to take roids

  • Ya, he admitted that he took DECA, and most of the elite powerlifters have taken and still take steroids. Nevertheless, he is a beast. Before the age of the triple-ply, his totals were untouchable. He beat big kaz and weighed only 220. Check out his interview on T-Nation. It's called "atlas speaks."

  • Man, those were some deep and explosive squats.

  • It's the explosion from the bottom that amazes me.

  • because he control the descent.

  • coan = the best

  • Isn't rugby for those who like soccer, but find it has less dry humping of each other than they like?

  • Sorry was just looking through my email and saw that, Rugby players, LOL!

  • Rugby player, LOL, did u say Rugby players? U mean the guys who dry hump each other and call it a sport?

  • I don't think he was competing against others that weren't on juice, for the most part everyone is at that level, he was just bad in his timing of use or using his masking agents. And he did have a horrible knee injury that set him way back from where he was. Honestly it is next to impossible to compare any of the old lifts to todays lifts, its just way too different. Even the single ply stuff of today adds a great amount to a lift.

  • And how are deadlifts a joke? u grab the weight and pull it to u stand, I don't see many bad deadlifts judging wise anyway.

  • Honestly, it has gotten off from my original point, Coan is a legend in this sport, Donnie Thompson is good, but he does not dominate his field like Coan did, and I' sure he would tell u the same himself. Like i said Coan beat the best by Hundreds of pounds. Did Donnie beat Bolton's numbers by 200 lbs? No. Thats my point.

  • I REALLY hate to say this, honestly, because I am all for it in reality- but Coan was jaked and competing against others that weren't. I know that is a fucking HORRIBLE compare/contrast here, and I can't believe I'm writing it, but once he got to multi-ply non-tested meets it wasn't like you say it was anymore.

Now, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that because I'm all for anabolics, but point taken- I've heard MANY stories from some guys about why he went back to single ply,

  • Why have rules in PLing become so lax? It just creates doubt! It is insane that i can't even find out what these guys can actually do raw. What can Kennelly bench raw? i have no idea. I know what Brian Siders can do only b/c he actually shows up at NERB.

  • Ummm, dude, Kennelly is going to break the raw record VERY soon... Right after he takes Luyando's 275 record.

I'm not judging your views, b/c your views are your views, not mine. Who am I to say that you are wrong? All I will say about the comments you just made is this is where powerlifting as a whole is going. 95% of people would rather see a 1200 lb squat than a 800 raw squat- that's just how it is. That's why the Arnold is gay as fuck now- you go from 1000 lb squatters to 700 lb squatters.

  • So if you respect raw numbers more than multi-ply numbers, then follow raw lifts- but don't be a gear hater. It's literally the same thing as rugby players hating on football players- relatively same sport (not as much as diff. feds in powerlifting but whatever), but most rugby players think football players are pussies for wearing pads.

Powerlifting is powerlifting, I don't care who uses what gear or lack there of- gear or no gear, everyone needs to respect everyone else's choices and shut up.

  • I don't care about raw vs geared, I care about feds with terrible judging so that a favourite can get his lifts in when they are bad lifts. Not only is it bad for the reputation of the sport, it's bad for the lifters who now have to compete against inflated numbers due to bad technique and ROM - that means they either use bad technique and ROM and cheat too or they stay honest but never beat the false records.

High squats and unlocked benches, deadlifts are a joke raw or equipped.

  • I agree completely, I really do- but don't bring the lifter into it. Bash the bad feds on here, not the guys who get "breaks" or "soft lockouts". I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but the IPA Pro-Am has brought back the hype and intensity of the best lifters in the world, along with the most strict judging there has EVER BEEN in multi-ply meets, no questions asked.

Why the fuck do you think Gary Frank and Bolton went to WPC?

  • I love many of today's lifters, vogelpohl is one of my favorite lifters, but honestly the only lift that is anything true in Multyply feds is the deadlift. If they are going to wear the gear, make them pause and actually lock out the bench, and can i see someone actually have their hips go below the knee in a squat they don't even have to walk out?

  • WTF? We got Ed Coan, heavy squats, and bleeding. How does this only rate 3 stars?

  • i will rate 10 stars if i can !!!

  • He got caught with steroids. All the pros use it. Even louie simmons said that all the people at the top use it. You have to do what you have to do to win. In my mind it makes the sport more interesting. They all still have to work hard.

  • you know its funny people say the only reason coleman and schwarzenneger people like that win is because of roids..yea thats true but what about everyone that they compete against? you know

  • Yeah right..He never took steroids is a damn lie..It wasnt natural..Look at him in the early years and see how ripped he was..you can tell he was juicing it..he just lies about it..like everyone else in that gym..

  • They all juice. HGH or otherwise. Don't kid yourself.

  • And they hav a shit load of steroids there..i saw needles in the garbage can..with the D-bol..

  • I'm pretty sure Coan, or anyone else who wanted to be a serious powerlifter, wouldn't waste their time on D-Bol..

  • what´s his best raw squat?

  • who cares?

  • me!

  • at least 685.

  • anyone know the music pleas?

  • hey i live 8 minutes away from quads gym its pretty expensive there $600 a year!

  • God damn that form is PERFECT.

  • I'm a squat record holder in a 148lbs junior league in my country... and If you realy wana know what a perfect fom is searc for DABAYA...nothing and I mean nothing beats the olympic form!

  • He's a cunt-bitch olympic lifter. Ed Coan isn't an olympic lifter, nor does anyone care about that stupid fag. Get real.

  • Why are there so mayn haters on the web? Cause it`s a place where sad lil, weak and unloved individuals can get off frustration.

    PS: ED IS KING :)

  • Who's Donny?

  • Donnie Thompson- 2850 WR Holder... huskerpower51 is right- Donnie is king...

  • As a superheavweight and with a 3 ply bench shirt, correct?

  • and wpo half squat style of course...

  • What the fuck ever dude. Just because Coan can't sit back into gear, don't slam the strongest mother fucker on the planet, got me?

Plus there is no WPO anymore, so it's obvious he won't be able to squat "wpo half squat style", whatever that means.

  • He's wears a regular Inzer Phenom. They happen to be 2-ply, sorry to disappoint you.

  • that mean half squat, and no monolift!

  • Oh yeah, I'm sure.

Let me guess- you're a raw lifter or you lift in single ply gear? I have never seen as much bullshit in my life as single ply and raw lifters give to multi-ply guys. Just respect what they do, whether you want to or not, shut the fuck up, and go on with your training. Jesus Christ...

  • What was he wearing 20 years ago when he was breaking records?

  • He was wearing single ply- why? Because he couldn't hang with the multi-ply guys. I'm sorry, but Coan was a great raw/single ply lifter. MOST people who are good raw lifters, often don't compete in double-ply gear. People who are that strong naturally won't put in the time and effort it takes to learn the technique multi-ply lifting has brought to powerlifting.

Not taking anything away from Ed Coan and what he's done, but he's not Donnie Thompson.
