This reminds me of my first P-Funk concert: Clevland, Ohio July 1980. I was taking the Greyhound to visit my niece in Canton OH. I had a six hour layover. What was a beautiful, sexy, young lady to do in the city with all that time to kill?
I went into the bar, met a fella who had two tickets. Went to the show with this total stranger and had the time of my life. First time I eva seen everybody up in the joint gettin' high and the police did nothing but enjoy the show. It was a quite a night.
My uncle Stephen Smalls,a Funky bass player from Queens NY,took me to my first show circa 1977 at Madison Square Garden.I was a 16 yr old Guitarist/Bassist. I've been 'Funked up' ever since.
When I first heard up on the down stroke I was hooked then Parliament came out in '76 with Tear the Roof off the Sucker(Give up the Funk) I became a P-Funk fan for LIFE!! All this new music today will never replace real music! Funk will always live and will never die!! R.I.P. Glen Goines, Star Child, Tiki Fulwood & Eddie Hazel
I thank GOD that I came along when I did. I'm 42 yrs old and I remember growing up listening to all those great black bands. I will always praise my father for introducing me to GOOD music. We always had music playing in the house and he had EVERYTHING. When you know good music, you can't fathom listening to bullshyt which is the case in most of today's music.
I know this is a weird comparison, but Glen reminds me of Steve Gaines from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Young cat, hell of a musician and singer on the verge of breaking out, only to be taken at a young age.
People dont MAKE music anymore....nor do they really SING anymore...I mean there are lots of popular singers out today, but few of the really SING, if that makes sense...Im 18 and I feel like I shouldnt have been born in the 90s or be growing up in the 2000s lol
THESE boys were rock stars. They could have kept this up for an hour. You can do that when you really FEEL your music and it aint some formulaic bubble-gum BULLSHIT.
I was at that concert back in the day,and loved every bit of it.They were way ahead before their time, and there music still goes on to this very day love ya`ll
Glen was like the last missing ingredient in the P-Funk stew. No doubt the guy enabled Parliament to make its best and most lasting work. Pure musical genius.
I wish DrDre sampled from this concert instead of the Oakland concert for Let Me Ride. His vocals on this version move me much more. Every time, the hairs on the back of my neck jump to attention
People, ONLY 83,690 hits? This is an amazing display of musical talent, soul, inspiration, and showmanship by the entire ensemble! Not to mention, GLEN GOINS STRAIGHT KILLED THE VOCALS AND GUITAR!! Justin Beiber, Lady Gaga, Drake, Lil' Wayne...get MILLIONS of hits whith each of their songs. There is no comparison in terms of talent, showmanship, musicialship, or vocals. Imagine Beiber playing guitar the way Glen did here! Yes, folks, as human beings, there is something REALLY wrong with us.
@DIJV79 Maybe you should care less about what other generations listen to and enjoy what you like yourself. What's up with all the whiny people on youtube? Can't they just enjoy things? Fuck, y'all have turned me into a whiny bitch too now:(
@OnkelMickwald lol i noticed this too. Every clip from the past has comments shitting on the present. In 20 years ppl will be saying fukk so and so "I miss beiber!! That real shit!"
@blacksmith1925 Lol! That thought is soooo uncomfortable, yet I fear your presumptions are right.
The thing is, I listen to almost exclusively music that is 20-30 years old or older, but I'm still put off by all this feeling of being superior for listening to old music... It's not like it's an achievement to have a taste that doesn't fit in to modern mainstream music... I just kinda drifted into this kind of music, I never heroicly broke free from the bonds of modern pop.

I think that he may be, both, recognizing african history as well as strange but plausible notions of extra-terrestrals in ancient times. The mothership says it all.

@wildpinkhorse Your correct.. this is Mothership Connection, done with the extended prequel to the landing of The Mothership. This is a great example of songs in the set-list gettin a lil extra Funk on any given nite. In this case..the bridge to the landing of The Mothership is extended long and funky. This extended bridge and prequel portion to the landing of the Mothership.. took on somewhat of a life of it's own..even earning it's own sub-title... 'swing down'. Hope this helps clarify..
a religious experience, profane profundities, and the philosophy that proves reincarnation is possible and a waste of time for the unenlightened mind. uncut funk, so wonderful in the ear...
They still do. Remember, this is the last of classical funk just as The God Father tradition of musical greatness. They are among musical history world wide, they are professional trained
They still do, saw them last summer and they funk as hard as ever in spite of their age. Though I will agree that this era is pretty much untouchable.
They still do, saw them last summer and they funk as hard as ever in spite of their age. Though I will agree that this era is pretty much untouchable.
Yabba dabba doo, Baby! The P-Funk is settin yo brain on fire, ride the Mother-ship and I'll let you kiss my ego! It's one nation under a groove and if you can't dig it, you don't eat chicken on Sunday!
Let's see, the horns sound like a symphony. Glen comes up with this amazing riff on guitar, and then sings like nobody's business. After that, Bernie, well you know, he's just Bernie. All that with the Mothership landing. I've watched this song several times, and I can't get enough!!
Hey msprissy...let me say that I'm 48yrs of age, have seen them numerous times as a group n solo artists..but N O T H I N G beats the MoShip landing...the 1st time I saw it , they had me thinking it was REAL !!
Totally amazing! Some of these so called musically gifted folks need to sit down and watch not only this clip, but other footage and SEE, LISTEN, and LEARN true funkiness! Let me ride!
They do that for attention purposes. This level of funk is legendary

Hey, that's "Mothership Connection (Star Child) not "Swing Down"
wildpinkhorse 2 years ago
@wildpinkhorse Your correct.. this is Mothership Connection, done with the extended prequel to the landing of The Mothership. This is a great example of songs in the set-list gettin a lil extra Funk on any given nite. In this case..the bridge to the landing of The Mothership is extended long and funky. This extended bridge and prequel portion to the landing of the Mothership.. took on somewhat of a life of it's own..even earning it's own sub-title... 'swing down'. Hope this helps clarify..

a religious experience, profane profundities, and the philosophy that proves reincarnation is possible and a waste of time for the unenlightened mind. uncut funk, so wonderful in the ear...

mamastrick 2 years ago 13
They still do. Remember, this is the last of classical funk just as The God Father tradition of musical greatness. They are among musical history world wide, they are professional trained
terry47family 2 years ago
@mamastrick
That's what I heard too.
My uncle told me that he went to one of their concerts
and it was one joint-lightin', flashlight-flashin', lighter-wavin'
party all over the arena!!! Damn I wish I coulda been there!!!
cen1276 1 year ago
@mamastrick

OMG!!! Totally orgasmic. How many sets of keyboards is Bernie playing?! He's a genius!! God Bless The Funk and those who follow it!
zulunurse2009 2 years ago 2
Back then, you had to have a Hammond B3, Fender Rhodes, VCS3, Mellotron, Moog, etc. I bet Bernie's roadies had 1 semi just his equipment alone! LOL!
luvoftorah 2 years ago 2
Bernie Worrell is a masta of the Hammond B3 . Just listen to how percussive he is!

I'm hooked! These grooves just stay in the head. Before you know it, your beat-boxin them, dancin, and actin the fool!!
luvoftorah 2 years ago 3
Let's see, the horns sound like a symphony. Glen comes up with this amazing riff on guitar, and then sings like nobody's business. After that, Bernie, well you know, he's just Bernie. All that with the Mothership landing. I've watched this song several times, and I can't get enough!!

Swing down, sweet chariot stop, and let me ride.
