there is no judo vs jiu jitsu ... there is oonly judo and jiiu jitsu - they very a like ... the only diference is that one enfecises on throws and the other one in ground fighting
O.K. so I'm not gonna lie i couldn't figure out who won and not to mention who was using what martial art , but that is not the biggest reason for this comment I've been reading some of these comments and I agree with a lot of them that have to do with people who are fighting to use more then one martial art cause you should be able to use whatever you want as long as its legal in the fight and it lets you win.
I don't know why everyone is arguing over nonsense. We're watching some good grappling here. Great locks, base, and strategy. This is historic. Most people sit and make claims of being the best, and all this other nonsense, but these two guys literally stepped in the ring like warriors. OSS!
also btw JUDO involves alot of strength, jiu jitsu was an old samarai style self defense art that became JUDO, a man named kano took the origins of ju jitsu and made them into JUDO than he sent a man of his to brazil to compete and educate people in JUDO but helio gracie and a select few started the brazilian jiu jitsu movement for guys who were smaller and didnt have strenghth to throw like they do in judo
bjj is still VERY effective for self defense, i dont practice it alot but i have ALOT of respect for BJJ as i am a more stand up muay thai based fighter
read your history, dumbass japanese jiu jitsu is similiar to judo with the throws but judo originated from jiu jitsu, brazilian jiu jitsu and sambo wrestling are derived from judo........they just call it jiu jitsu because original japanese jiu jitsu was ground fighting but with knives and stuff.....jiu jitsu is about FINISHING your oppenent like muay thai......judo is the sport version....like theres ring muay thai and street fight-style muay thai that they hold in rural thailand for instanace
Just watching this fight shows how flawed bjj tactics are. The round starts and both guys meet in the center of the ring and royce goes immediately to his back,(like a women). If this were a street fight yoshida would have killed him.
@Magic110Cop judo was first if u read the history idiot, they were gonna call it brazilian judo but it follows the philosophy of jiu jitsu or something like that so thats why its called brazilian jiu jitsu, it just sport jiu jitsu, i noticed old school japanese jiu jitsu is more for the street and in-effective and inferior if u ask me they see te bjj guys with the judo guys pretty much since its a "sport style" but also works good in the street like muay thai
@giovannialvarez Why would they call it brazilian judo it was originated in japan, so was jiu jitsu the reason it's know today as brazilian jiu jitsu is because japanese ju jitsu was tought to Carlos Gracie and thats where it started, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu started because Helio Gracie Changed it to make it about more leverage than strength because he was too weak too do the traditional japanese ju jistu which was more strength.
@BrazilianJiuJitsu209 i think u meant to say JUDO at the end JUDO is the japanese modified "sport version", brazilian jiu jitsu is the same thing, except bjj is more brutal in my opinion....none of those styles match up to a properly trained muay thai fighter.....theyre the best and best for self defense because lets face it unless your going one on one i would not want"to go to the ground" so his homies can stomp me out, id rather knee, elbow and punch in a street fight it gets the point riaway
@giovannialvarez *judo is the sport version of japanese jiu jitsu......japanese jiu jitsu is almost like karate its kinda of inferior in some ways because it was used when the japs were samurais and didnt need to punch and kick because of their armor so if they ran out of weapons they used their armor ju jitsu skills to take the opponent down and finish him....brazilian jitz is the same thing....fiiinish your opponent in a skillful technical way
Fact: When the Japanese government had to decide which martial art would be chosen to teach to the police department a match was held in Tokyo between Jigoro Kano's Judo school and Tokyo city's best Jiujitsu school, Judo demolished Jiujitsu winning 12 of the 15 matches with 1 draw. It was decided that the police department would learn Judo.
Royce got chocked out. His body went limb. Once an opponent gets that far with the choke it's impossible to defend it. Trust me it's a very effective and painful choke. It wouldn't have mattered if the Ref would have waited 10 more seconds. Good call on the Ref.
I like both styles. Besides, you can't always win forever, even if you know brazilian jiu jitsu. But I do prefer brazilian jiu jitsu better for me though.
I respect your opinion (I prefer judo). But I also think that both styles should merge. Olympic and tournament competition is different. Besides that however, I think its silly for a practitioner and teacher of either art to only concentrate on one without borrowing from the other.
@risingsun08107 Even if the ref did call it too early, royce had stopped resisting... It was obvious he was stuck there, and since he wasn't getting out of the choke, it was only a matter of time... Just because he didn't black out doesn't mean he didn't lose...
@brainstew232 it just didn't seem like royce was being choked, he was still kinda moving and he popped right up after the ref called it. But I watched the video again and it is kind of hard to tell. If I was the ref I would've waited just a bit longer, but then again I'm not a ref, so what do I know
@brainstew232 Agreed, and just look at Gracie's left hand at 08:25 - it goes limp. IMO the ref made the right call and no one should take anything away from Yoshida. He won fair and square :)
Good call by the ref....Royce was done..!!!

@lunasearevived he passed out :-), and he was in a collar choke, which if properly applied is just as dangerous as a RNC

i don't understand, royce didn't tap, and was not in a dangerous submission position, why did they stop?

@lunasearevived not sure if he actually passed out, but definitely seemed to stop doing anything, so I would agree with lsloewen2
