If you're ever reading this, Mr. Mendes, THANK YOU for one of the most joyous, and delightful songs ever laid on vinyl. Truly, this song makes me smile every time I hear it - and I think you're a genius.
gorgeous song, fabulous arrangement and orchestration - a beautiful mood destroyed by having to sit thru the obnoxious ad in the beginning. I won't be back.
listen to the background orchestration. that's countermelody. there's something you don't hear anymore. a classic song with a classic arrangement. pure genius!
This is the song that made me fall in love with Lani Hall and Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 (or were they '67 by this time?) My mom once told me she realized I was growing up when she discovered I liked "Pretty World" every bit as much as she did. (I was 9). Thanks for the sweet nostalgia trip (love those mini dresses!!)
As a kid growing up here in Australia in the 60's, absolutely loved Sergio and his band for all the wonderful music they made. Their music has stood the test of time and always makes me smile! Have they been indoctrinated into the Hall of Fame?
I'm sorry, but this is just entirely too beautiful and groovy, for general consumption by the unwashed masses of the 21st century! We're not worthy, we're not worthy! But now it is too late... the ever so subtly sexy swaying of Karen Phillipp combined with the signature soft sound of Brazil '66 emenating from Lani Hall, has left an indellable impression on my poor blown mind! Oh!, to return to those halcyon days of other-worldly grooviness of this particular period in American pop music!
@StereoSpace They're dresses not skirts, but I couldn't agree more. It is so nice to see genuinely sexy women, not sluts or debris from the gutter, sexy.
Thanks for posting this vid. it's just too cool, I go way back with this group I had this album and 3 others by sergio. The girls are great . What did happen to the blonde?
@lifelove240 The blonde is Karen Philipp who was also an actress and played Lieutenant Dish on MASH. After that she dropped off my radar screen, though Lani was always my favorite. I always considered her the voice of Brasil '66.
@bluegreen988 Thanks for that...now there's a project for a quiet day; to dig out the Sept 72 playboy and see the unedited version of Karen with Mas que nada playing in the background (smile).
Am 44 & ridiculed for my music encompassing periods from b4 recordings of sound ever existed, to present day. It is, isn't it, what appeals to INDIVIDUALS that matters? Commanding "taste" is simply silly. Idiocy. Arrogance. We like, or don't like, or even listen to music we may not've listened to 20/30 yrs ago from that period now, because it reminds us of the circumstances around it's play & the in-between music also. No one should say what others should listen to or believe in. Ever.
First time I heard that music was back in 1996 when I was a freshman in high school!!! From the first listen, I fell in love with their sound!! Been that way ever since!! I'm glad my mother introduced me to this group, and I'm glad that I've learned that the 60s was more than just rock music.
That is an incredible story about the swizzle stick! I fell in love with Lani Hall's voice in Junior High and still listen to Brasil 66 today. I would have kept that swizzle stick in a heartbeat! How lucky you are to have seen them live.
What must it have been like to be the most beautiful woman in the world...Karen Phillip singing with one of the most wonderful voices in the world and herself quite lovely?...Lani Hall...just gives me Goose Bumps! And I was there, in Bellingham, Wa...these goosebumps have never gone away. Thank you for this!
I went to Texas. While on leave in 1968, I went back to Austin just before I shipped out to Vietnam. My date got front row center tickets to a Brazil '66 concert. After the concert, we went backstage and I met and talked with Lani Hall. I fell in love with her from the first words she spoke, "Well, hello."
She was chewing on a swizzle stick which I picked up when she put the glass down and I carried it with me all the way through two consecutive tours in Vietnam. It was my good luck charm.
Hey Halo: missed the concert but made three tours. You're right- carried their music with me all those times. CVarries me back to the great parts of those years > we were fortunate to have them, which is why we find them on you tube.
@Tuscan002 Roger that, Tuscan002. I carried that swizzle stick with me for almost two years Phan Thiet to Phu Bai. Your mind does strange things to you sitting in a bunker staring at teeth marks on a plastic straw. I never forgot the origin of those marks. Oh, to be 23 again...
Try that.
That Karen Philipps (the blonde) is a hot piece of ass! I get a boner just looking at her sway her hips. It took years to find her Playboy spread, and it was worth the wait.
@casey3234 And is by far by a lanslide the better version EVER to Wichita Lineman. No one in this world but a Brazilian Bossa Nova player could create that beat!
@MsJollycholly No, in fact Glorinha and Lani have a lot of resemblance, I myself sometimes confuse them but Glorinha only began to sing with Sergio and Brazil 66 in early 1971 when Lani Hall left out to pursue a solo career along with her then boyfriend - later her husband - Herb Alpert.
Then Glorinha Leporace, a Bossa Nova singer of Brazil, replaced her til nowadays. She's Sergio's wife and theleading female singer in the 2006 version of Black Eyed Peas recording "Mas Que Nada" not Fergie.
@OntCanGuy Yes, this is Janis Hansen. I learned that after concluding her successful singing career, she went into writing and production. She later got involved inThe Bible Adventure Club project. The series, aimed at children 3–7 years old. She has produced five books in all. Great lady, mighty pretty too to say the least.
Thankis for posting. Karen Phillips and Lani Hall are still the best girl singers of this group not counting the very originaland wonderful Wanda Da Sah and also Gettchen( I know Im not spelling her name right) .
@craig98shari The original line up singers were Wanda de Sá and Rosinha de Valença, two Brazilian Bossa Nova singers, replaced by Lani Hall and Jenis Hansen, this one replaced by Karen Philipp in early 69.
In 1970 Lani left out to pursue a solo career along Herb Alpert and was replaced by Glorinha Leporace , another Brazilian singer. Since then, Leporace - who married Mendes - is singing with the group. She sang in the recording of Black Eyed Peas version of Mas Que Nada.
