  • i always loved Sergio Mendes as a child. The music is so clean and pure. Still a beautiful sound even now.

  • Karen Phillips is super sexy here.

  • Anybody know where to find this hit in Portuguese (closer to the original) ?

  • nice a blast from the past

  • If you're ever reading this, Mr. Mendes, THANK YOU for one of the most joyous, and delightful songs ever laid on vinyl. Truly, this song makes me smile every time I hear it - and I think you're a genius.

  • gorgeous song, fabulous arrangement and orchestration - a beautiful mood destroyed by having to sit thru the obnoxious ad in the beginning. I won't be back.

  • Lani Hall is great!!!!!!!!!!

  • They are timeless..just fantastic! and the 60's were a period of great sense of style. wonderful song!

  • listen to the background orchestration. that's countermelody. there's something you don't hear anymore. a classic song with a classic arrangement. pure genius!

  • Are Lani and Karen two of the sexiest looking and sounding women ever heard in Popular Music?!!

  • @casey3234 Yes, most certainly.

  • ...love Lani Hall!!!

  • This brings out some sweet nostalgic moods in me. Great song, stylish, and the girls sing great and they are genuinely sexy.

  • Man I love this group and those dresses!!! Thanks Vinston S Corbin for introducing them to me!!! (MY DAD)

  • Unmistakeably great sound of Sergio Mendes and company. Thanks, I actually didn't know this one!

  • Would love to know what made Lani laugh @ 0:54 ;D Thanks for such a great quality clip!

  • Damn women looked like that when I was young . Now they look like makeup

  • Zero dislike this wonderful music .

  • Yes two beautiful women that can sing

  • None of that Lady Gag-a stuff here! Classy ladies, great voices, great music.

  • This is the song that made me fall in love with Lani Hall and Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 (or were they '67 by this time?) My mom once told me she realized I was growing up when she discovered I liked "Pretty World" every bit as much as she did. (I was 9). Thanks for the sweet nostalgia trip (love those mini dresses!!)

  • @TheCatgirl6 What a great memory! Made me smile!

  • @MrDjp415 Thanks! (Me, too!)

  • As a kid growing up here in Australia in the 60's, absolutely loved Sergio and his band for all the wonderful music they made. Their music has stood the test of time and always makes me smile! Have they been indoctrinated into the Hall of Fame?

  • Lovely singing, I've been listening to it the whole day since finding it.

Did anyone notice Lani cringe a little at 0:23? Think she stood a little too far for the camera to zoom into, hehe...

  • He looks like such a sweet, happy man with out-the-wazoo talent...and he is! Glad I got to meet him...twice!

  • Such a hip groove...laid back...great vocals too!

  • Just a joy. Lani Hall is smiling so hard she almost stops singing. And how cool is Sergio!

  • I'm sorry, but this is just entirely too beautiful and groovy, for general consumption by the unwashed masses of the 21st century! We're not worthy, we're not worthy! But now it is too late... the ever so subtly sexy swaying of Karen Phillipp combined with the signature soft sound of Brazil '66 emenating from Lani Hall, has left an indellable impression on my poor blown mind! Oh!, to return to those halcyon days of other-worldly grooviness of this particular period in American pop music!

  • too bad elevator music doesn´t come with the mini-skirt visuals...which one plays the flute...!

  • @only1too : and where are the trumpet players ? why don't we hear Mendes when he's singing at the end of the song ? All play back ! but good anyway.

  • @silansmax

I wasnt so much interested in the instruments...just her talents...!!

  • Wow, I miss mini skirts!

  • @StereoSpace They're dresses not skirts, but I couldn't agree more. It is so nice to see genuinely sexy women, not sluts or debris from the gutter, sexy.

  • @TXC58 Right! This is sexy in its purest form! Effortless!

  • man, look how beautiful the women were in the "60's!

  • The two grooviest chicks in the world!

  • stay gold

  • Thanks for posting this vid. it's just too cool, I go way back with this group I had this album and 3 others by sergio. The girls are great . What did happen to the blonde?

  • What are the girls names? I'm assuming the brunette is Lani Hall, Herb Alperts' wife. Did the blond have solo albums too? Nice....

  • @lifelove240 The blonde is Karen Philipp who was also an actress and played Lieutenant Dish on MASH. After that she dropped off my radar screen, though Lani was always my favorite. I always considered her the voice of Brasil '66.

  • @robbiegalgal karen philip posed nude at playboy magazine sept 1972

  • @bluegreen988 Thanks for that...now there's a project for a quiet day; to dig out the Sept 72 playboy and see the unedited version of Karen with Mas que nada playing in the background (smile).

  • @robbiegalgal

Thankx for the info. I never knew the blonde's name until now, I have to agree with you I always thought of Lani Hall as the voice of Brazil 66.

  • this takes me back to miami at the beach in 81

  • I love this music SO so much. But one of the top Grammy winners of all time IS of today and giver her a listen: Alison Krauss

  • There is something wonderful about seeing a pretty girl (or girls) sing a good song.

    This is wonderful.

  • Great upload!

  • Am 44 & ridiculed for my music encompassing periods from b4 recordings of sound ever existed, to present day. It is, isn't it, what appeals to INDIVIDUALS that matters? Commanding "taste" is simply silly. Idiocy. Arrogance. We like, or don't like, or even listen to music we may not've listened to 20/30 yrs ago from that period now, because it reminds us of the circumstances around it's play & the in-between music also. No one should say what others should listen to or believe in. Ever.

  • What a song! Lani Hall's lush, full-bodied vocal sound showcased in this most fabulous song.

  • That is an incredible story about the swizzle stick! I fell in love with Lani Hall's voice in Junior High and still listen to Brasil 66 today. I would have kept that swizzle stick in a heartbeat! How lucky you are to have seen them live.

  • What must it have been like to be the most beautiful woman in the world...Karen Phillip singing with one of the most wonderful voices in the world and herself quite lovely?...Lani Hall...just gives me Goose Bumps! And I was there, in Bellingham, Wa...these goosebumps have never gone away. Thank you for this!

  • I went to Texas. While on leave in 1968, I went back to Austin just before I shipped out to Vietnam. My date got front row center tickets to a Brazil '66 concert. After the concert, we went backstage and I met and talked with Lani Hall. I fell in love with her from the first words she spoke, "Well, hello."

She was chewing on a swizzle stick which I picked up when she put the glass down and I carried it with me all the way through two consecutive tours in Vietnam. It was my good luck charm.

  • @Halo101st That's great story, thanks.

  • @rador7 I still marvel at the power of something like a plastic swizzle stick that was chewed on by a beautiful, talented woman.

  • @Halo101st

Hey Halo: missed the concert but made three tours. You're right- carried their music with me all those times. CVarries me back to the great parts of those years > we were fortunate to have them, which is why we find them on you tube.

Good luck, stay healthy , and, airBORNE

    USASF 67-71

  • @Tuscan002 Roger that, Tuscan002. I carried that swizzle stick with me for almost two years Phan Thiet to Phu Bai. Your mind does strange things to you sitting in a bunker staring at teeth marks on a plastic straw. I never forgot the origin of those marks. Oh, to be 23 again...

Keep breathing, my friend, and the best of luck.

    Airborne! 327th/502nd '68-'70

  • I really love Bossa Nova Music its so chilled and the sounds relaxes me. :)

Try that.
  • That Karen Philipps (the blonde) is a hot piece of ass! I get a boner just looking at her sway her hips. It took years to find her Playboy spread, and it was worth the wait.

  • Their video for "Wichita Lineman" features Karen Phillipp with Lani Hall.

  • @casey3234 And is by far by a lanslide the better version EVER to Wichita Lineman. No one in this world but a Brazilian Bossa Nova player could create that beat!

  • Comment removed

  • isn't that Graciela Leporace, Sergio's wife?

  • @MsJollycholly No, in fact Glorinha and Lani have a lot of resemblance, I myself sometimes confuse them but Glorinha only began to sing with Sergio and Brazil 66 in early 1971 when Lani Hall left out to pursue a solo career along with her then boyfriend - later her husband - Herb Alpert.

Then Glorinha Leporace, a Bossa Nova singer of Brazil, replaced her til nowadays. She's Sergio's wife and theleading female singer in the 2006 version of Black Eyed Peas recording "Mas Que Nada" not Fergie.

  • I know Lani Hall but who is that dream girl on the right?

  • @RGN07 Janis Hansen?

  • @OntCanGuy Yes, this is Janis Hansen. I learned that after concluding her successful singing career, she went into writing and production. She later got involved inThe Bible Adventure Club project. The series, aimed at children 3–7 years old. She has produced five books in all. Great lady, mighty pretty too to say the least.

  • @RGN07 This is actually Karen Phillipp. Janis departed the group in late '68 or early '69.

  • Regarding Karen Phillip, after Sergio & Brasil '66, appeared on 'Mash', and did a photo spread for 'Playboy' entitled 'Mash Dish'.

  • Sergio Mendes--babe magnet

  • Thankis for posting. Karen Phillips and Lani Hall are still the best girl singers of this group not counting the very originaland wonderful Wanda Da Sah and also Gettchen( I know Im not spelling her name right) .

  • @craig98shari The original line up singers were Wanda de Sá and Rosinha de Valença, two Brazilian Bossa Nova singers, replaced by Lani Hall and Jenis Hansen, this one replaced by Karen Philipp in early 69.

In 1970 Lani left out to pursue a solo career along Herb Alpert and was replaced by Glorinha Leporace , another Brazilian singer. Since then, Leporace - who married Mendes - is singing with the group. She sang in the recording of Black Eyed Peas version of Mas Que Nada.

    Cheers from Brazil.

  • melody, tune, rhythm, love - all the ingredients for MAGIC!!!

  • omg, i forgot all about this song. thank you so much!!!

  • Now THIS is what I call music! Bom Trabalho!

  • @ 1:23, I would be smiling just like that too if Lany Hall were singing over my shoulder. By the way, this clip represents the approximate moment Western civilization and art proceeded to backslide badly. Should be someone else's turn now.

  • @toober222 Ditto! When, Where and How did it all go wrong, , from this to today's garbage!?

  • @robertconticom that's a rather narrow-minded statement. Not ALL of today's music is garbage, you just have to look around for music that doesn't rely on technical wizardry and references to bitches and drugs. There's plenty of good stuff on myspace, reverbnation, and mp3.com. Also Sergio Mendes has worked with one of the worst bands of the 00's and made their music beautiful. ;-)

  • @dariowestern Let's put this way, the real good music of today doesn't play on radio and tv.

  • @dariowestern "Also Sergio Mendes has worked with one of the worst bands of the 00's and made their music beautiful. "

But you know the secret to that? The leading female voice in the recording of 'Mas Que Nada" along Black Eyed Peas is not Fergie but Glorinha Leporace, wife of Sergio and member of the band since 1971.

Never in this life Fergie would be able to sing a Brazilian music with the rhythm, pitch and balance of Glorinha Leporace. :-)

  • @dariowestern Yeah!!! I have to admit, there ARE some of today's music that have no reference to drugs or degrading of women, or reliant on auto-tune. You just have to look and LISTEN!!

  • @dariowestern True,, but why is it that I can close my eyes & pick an LP off of my record shelves and find excellent music(jazz & latin from 1950's-mid-70's), yet taking a random CD off the shelf of the average college student these days it will most likely be awful music?

Here's what an orchestra conductor once said about new pop music: I think it's Good and Original. The only problem is that the Good parts aren't original, and the Original parts aren't good.

  • @dariowestern they weren't that bad pre fergie... the album bridging the gap and the one before it (their first two) were top notch hip hop albums.. and speaking of that collab between sergio and b.e.p. it didn't honour in any sense the essence of bossa nova - mainly being esoteric lyrics and salsa infused rock... btw mas que nada is a jorge ben piece (check out - take it easy my brother charles and get the lyrics translated)

  • @dariowestern - so you are saying there is SOME good new music out there. OK, start naming names ....

  • @hydropolite I don't have to justify myself to you. But if you think that all rock and modern popular music is rubbish, then you are narrow-minded.

  • @dariowestern - stop calling people names & start naming names of good contemporary music - there are millions of us starving people out there .....

  • @hydropolite Mika, Scissor Sisters, Beady Eye, P!nk, Katy Perry, Black-Eyed Peas. Look it up in Billboard. com. ;-)

  • Dang!

  • Brilliant

  • wonderful karen sergio lany and brasil 66 ....i love all of them

    .............

  • Beautiful and timeless song. Now this is real music compared to the crap today. Who is the blond?

  • @foxspeedlogistics

    Karen Philipp

  • @foxspeedlogistics Karen Phillip

  • @foxspeedlogistics what is 'real music'? Please give me a concise definition. The blond lady is Karen Philipp. :)

  • @foxspeedlogistics agree. Today's singers have no class and have to lip-sync every song.

  • nog steeds fantastische sound!

  • I wish this wasn't lip-synced! Would love to hear it live!

  • What happened to the world? It was wonderful! Had to post this to facebook today to remind family and friends of what God meant for it to be for us.

  • @letnofleshglory I would have to concur with you.

  • what a fantastic song....reminiscing my time when i'm just started singing...'86's time!!

  • I wish music and songs was like that now...just simple love.
