All Anna Moffo had done by a plastic surgeon was to have her nose changed a bit...that's all! She was very beautiful before having this done. Watch her earlier works...See her as a child...nothing was changed other than to put a slight curve to her nose which is only noticeable from one side or the other...not face front. I like it better after the very little work was done on just the profile of her nose.
WOW! How different Moffo looks before all the work she had on her face! Here you can see her real nose, chin and cheek bones! She must of gone to one of the best plastic surgents in the world because he did a great job, he turn an other wise common woman in to a beauty queen!
She had a warm voice, but not a big voice. Butterfly takes a BIG VOICE....and Moffo was never quite the same after this. She was a natural lyric coloratura, not a spinto soprano. She was beautiful, though, and a very believeable actress...and this made her famous. Her career was over in ten years, but she had a good ride even at that. I heard one of her final Lucias at the Met...tragically bad.
Great lyric sopranos are about both singing and acting. Anna was one of the best period. No one expects rock singers to sound the same so why people expect sopranos to sound the same always makes me roll my eyes and growl.
Great performance. Great singing AND ACTING. Those of you who made comments about "over-acting" think for a second... this person is driven to such desperation that she is about to stab herself to death. Actual human behaviour in this circumstance would be much bigger and more extreme than Moffo's acting. "Acting is living truthfully under Imaginary Circumstances Sanford Meisner. This is not overacting, this is appropriate operatic acting in the circumstance of a suicide.

Excellent Butterfly. Just the right voice for it. At this stage of her career anyway.

the over-acting is a pity! Her voice is perfect for the Cio Cio san role

does anyone know how old Moffo was in this performance?...Did she ever interpret the part of Butterfly before her 30's ?

She was born in 1932. This performance is from 1957. I saw her do this role in the park (Queens) with The Met about 5 or 6 years later.
She was a last minute replacement and sang brilliantly with score before her.

My correction. This is from 1956. The RCA recording is from 1957

Perfect singing is what THAT is.

How is it possible that they always find such beautiful little boys that can act as an adult ?

they don't. I've seen 2 performances ruined by badly behaved kids.
