I was there front row when she returned to Sydney, and it was unlike anything i've ever experienced before. Definitely the highlight of my trip to Australia. I look forward to coming back
I am so very glad she made it home safely. The trip must have been rewarding to the fullest, but I'm sure she's glad to be back with her family now. I imagine I would have been bawling myself if I'd been out there in that big welcoming party. : )
@WQ673, briefly, the thought that she is an inspiration to other young people is nonsense as other young people are in no position to follow such a dream, it's expensive!
Would be best to choose real "strugglers" in life for inspiration, people who study hard, and learn good english expression, or show maturity by their respect for others, or use up their energies to help others...the list could go on....
Ever hear of sponsors? Jessica's family were not rich neither was Jessica, which makes it even more impressive that such a young lady could convince enough people to back her so she could achieve what she has.
Continue : We must be glad having sutch some youth in our worled like JESSY and Bethanny Hamilton, surfing after her armlost in the worledtop. Jessy is like Jeanne de Arc, an brave idealistic girl ! Look round and You are seeing mad music, drugs, alcolic, free love mutch in our youth. I am shure, Jessy would finish her scool, and she would sail in future, more than one round the worled !
Wishing the best for her life, and alway alife, Helmut, an old sailingman !!
@Mr Fakunda, judging from the comments, you seem to be the one on the cross, and, you may as well forgive the world now instead of insulting those who seem reasonable in their arguments. as for what I have written..."what I have written I have written"!
I thought I would not say anything else on this subject,
but, if Jessica really said the critics "don't count for anything anyhow" I feel this should be highlighted, because it confirms how spoilt she really must be to think this way. Is she the quiet achiever Australia used to look up to?
Lots of factors contributed to Jessica's success, the question is how much expertise, courage, risk. understanding of human nature, nobility of intention did her actions represent?
Yeah, Jessica is a true inspiration to all young people out there who can get their hands on a $500,000.00 yacht and a family who can afford to fly around the world to watch you.
And as you're begging for another insult, how's this?
You're basically a sycophant and an under-achiever but with an over-inflated opinion of yourself which you compensate for by being aggressive to others.
@4getfulness16 - Dickhead - you ask a question then answer it yourself. You must be a loser to ajudge everyone else is one too. Why can't you just accept the point that many peeps find the 'rich bitch's victory is hollow.'
What an insult to hear that 'Jessica is such an inspiration to other young people' when most young people who need that motivation can't even afford a decent education, let alone a $500, 000 yacht.
"Oh, are the people hungry? Then let them eat cake."
@MrRolley77 Sorry to be judgemental. I think I just got a bit too carried away bcoz me, personally, I felt happy for her to do what she did and then when people were like ''it's a scam because she's rich'' or whatever I guess I was just annoyed (and I know she is rich coz who else could afford a yacht like that like u were saying). And by saying 'she's an inspiration' I guess they mean that because she followed her dream to sail solo around the world.
@rduck2267 not all schools/students are so negative. Jessica should have been at school, she is too young for such adventures as she's had.
How much imput was her own? does she really understand all the technicalities of sailing? I get the feeling she was just a passenger on a very sophisticated sailing boat with minimal or no risk to life.
Heroism should be reserved for deeds involving high risks for the tangible benefits to others or for ideals of great value to humanity ...
@enniopat or @duck267: I dont know, who are is scribing this nonserns. I want You are sitting in an also modern Sailingboat in househigh waves, often lying flat on the water, only so You can know, what nature and storm on water will do with You. There is nothing well modern technic, there is only alife ! Jessy had done all wright, so she is superclever and superbrave ! She had learnd so mutch more for her life than in scool !

@thesop21 At 16 you made $120k in a year and then you woke up after wetting your bed to realize it was all a dream. What are you going to dream about next? Maybe sailing around the world? Jessica actually did that you loser.
@rolfzzzz she should be in school for what? To learn how to do drugs and rob people like all the rest of the POS teens today. She is home schooled for your information. She wasn't looking for any fame and fortune. Why are you so jealous?
people are so easly fooled with this scam, how much money/sponsers was put into jessica's
trip and exacly how many professional people worked around the clock watching her and advising her of tides, wind and direction, nothing more then a business investment from the start.
@Not Easily regimented, no doubt it takes some skill, discipline, and good health to do it....but, lots of people have those qualities and they are not referred to as heroes. Some even go to war and risk a lot more and still the label of hero is not easily given to them. What qualifies one for hero ranking? a large crowd that applauds, a prime minister (politician) that gets involved for the votes? I wonder? I wonder about your definition of "Hero"
Jessica deserves full & proper recognition for her amazing achievement. Now there will always be whingers & critics .. those from the 'Tall Poppy" category .. who are sad, sad cases. Even Jessica acknowledges their presence; but then she says ' let them be, they don't count for anything anyhow, don't allow them to cause you trouble & hassles in your life'. Right on !! Jess seems to be emotionally mature beyong her years. She's a genuine inspiration to all Australians. So honest & humble.
A HERO ?? hmmm , I think Australia was just trying to recreate the Americas cup victory just to excite the country a bit and make a headline across the world..
Hard to understand some of you younger people. You aren't supposed to be so cynical until you achieve old age. Like me. Maybe you won't get the chance. Your cynicism and negativity will probably consume you long before you reach my age.
Thoughts are things, dude. Be careful what you think, and what you think about. It is your choice what you think about and what you think about what you think about.
There's a certain proportion of comments below which, sadly, are disparaging of Jessica & her wonderful achievement. I wonder if such put-downs are merely ugly jealousy or just plain ignorance & a dullard's lack of intellect. Probably both. Jess does not own the boat, her family did not fund the feat. Sponsors are the ones who chased her .. not vice versa. She admitted herself that she's not a hero .. merely an ordinary girl. She speaks with a sincerity, humility & honesty which can't be faked.
@colindominy i dont think its jealously just criticism to the PM and the general population of australians who call her a hero. No doubt this was a exceptional achievement but the term hero should be reserved for those who save lives and make australia a better living place. And really did it really require 5 channels to broadcast the same event or is australia really desperate for some global attention?
Changing the topic to saving lives and making Australia a better place is just silly.
Anyone, male or female, young or old, who braves the vagaries of the oceans on an around the globe trip single handed is very brave. And to conquer the challenge of single handed circumnavigation of the globe on a small boat is truly inspiring for those who have any idea what would be entailed.. She is a hero. And you are not.
LOOK AT ALL THOSE SPONSERS. the least she coulda done was donate to charity. Obviously it was self-interest to spark media attention and get the big bucks. Looks like she got what she wanted. And Rudd calling her a hero?? Wow what a good way to get back some votes
@Frenzal88 that shes been branded a "hero" by everyone. The term "hero" shouldnt be missused and should be reserved for those who have actually dont something appropriate for this country such as doctors, ambos, firemen, policemen, army servicemen,etc...I congratulate her on her trip though but is it really a big deal or is Australia just seeking some global attention? Especially rudd.
whats with all the cocksucker haters would like to see you do what she has done plus she said herself shes not a hero so to all the haters go fuck yourself
Hmm...you know something? to all those people that disapprove, You should really think about it, and perhaps listen to what Jessie says very carefully. She did it because she wanted to, it was one of her many life goals. "I'm and ordinary girl who believed in her dream." This is what she did, she completed one of her life goals, and good on her for doing it! I'm sorry for all of those losers that don't have a life and criticise those that do.
@Logicbeatslies Yep, unless you think an attention seeking rich girl going on a boat trip is the greatest thing in the world, you're jealous.
I'm not jealous. I'm annoyed that this story recieved the attention it got. She was rich enough to own a yacht, lets give her a medal shall we? Who cares about the scientists, teachers and engineers who actually contribute something to society?
@spenceII My first reaction was, shit I would have loved to do that, etc.
When I watched her on TV, I felt much different because she is a great role model.
Look, my distant memories of being that age involve people thinking the worst of me, and in my confusion, me playing up to an undeserved reputation, which I'm still paying for, 20 odd years on...
Yet, when I was 16, I showed every sign of being a mature and useful member of society, for sure!
@spenceII wow you clearly have no idea, she did not own the boat, and her parents are not 'rich'. I would like to see YOU go around the world in a small boat like that. Even a sailing veteran that accomplished this task when HE was 45 WITH A CREW said it was incomprehensible that a 16 yr old girl could do it solo. and she proved them all wrong. What I sense with you is a lack of self achievement, because you know deep down that she has achieved more in life than you ever will, and she is only 16
@aholl29 I do not recognise the abuse of buoyancy for 8 months to be an achievement that I should respect. Achievements of this 'personal journey' sort can only be appreciated by the individual. Why should I respect her personal achievement? My appreciation is much better placed in the achievements of people who are making the world a better place.
Also, I don't have a lack of self achievement. Infact, I feel quite fulfilled in knowing that what I'm doing now will one day make a difference.
@MrFakunda Whether it was for a personal sense of achievement, wealth or attentions her motivation was self centred. She didnt solve any real problem, she simply made up an obstacle and overcame it. If she put her effort into solving a real problem or at least raised money for charity during the trip, she would have my respect; but she didn't.
I'm sure you do pity that there is no awards for internet arseholes, you seem quite fond of praising people for no reason.
@spenceII That sarcasm is uncalled for. Because *you* don't have the means doesn't mean you can judge this act. Sailing alone, especially around the world, is an achievement that very few can master, let alone at 16. You should get out of your room and fight for a relevant life, my friend.
@odracirseraoseia1999 Like I have said, what she did, she did for personal reasons. The reward she found was her own sence of achievement and therefore does not require my respect. I reserve my respect for those who act selflessly and gain far too little in return.
@spenceII There are no unselfish acts, man. You always do something because it fulfills you. Even if that helps a lot of people, there's always a sense of achievement, otherwise you wouldn't do it.
@odracirseraoseia1999 Selflessness concerns putting others welfare above your own. It is the motivations behind your actions that determine whether they are selfless or otherwise, not the profit one gains from these actions.
@spenceII And if you read closely you won't find any argumentum ad hominem in what I've written. I criticised your judgment, and in the end I suggested a change. I understand that being faced with your unnecessary sarcasm might be uncomfortable, but finding fallacies where they don't exist won't help you mate.
@odracirseraoseia1999 You "suggested a change" to a problem that you invented. I lead a satisfyingly "relevant" life and to suggest that I do not is a pathetic move.
@spenceII .....well that is great comment, the only problem is, Jessica's parents are ideots, their in massive dept. They really believed after Jessica's famous solo yacht achievement, would roll in the money, an endless supply.
12 months on, they are deeper in dept than ever before, It's all Jessica's fault!
It's going to take many years of work at McDonalds to pay for freighter damage Jess caused.
Good on her for doing something hard. The real problem is with our society. What place do kids have in breaking records? This was not a record for the youngest person to sail around the world. This was a record for "who will be the youngest person to risk death and a mental breakdown". I'm fine with people risking death for records but let's make sure they are adults not kids.
@thesop21 you my friend suffer from tunneled vision. At the age of 14 I had left school and was earning $63,000 per year with an I.T firm which shall remain nameless. At 14 I was earning more money than my parents. Who is to say that a person is 'to young' to take risks'? Is it not that individuals choice? Just because MOST 16 year olds do not have the mental capacity to navigate around town, should a young girl like Jess be penalized because she can navigate around the world?
When I was 16 I made $120k in a year. The Sydney Morning Herald, December 23,1998 described me as a "boy genius". All that is completely irrelevant to this. I know the true value of doing physical things and it's beneficial. The Guiness Book of Records doesn't do records based on age anymore after Jessica Dubroff, the 7 year old pilot attempted a record and died. Keep kids out of records where they can die. It is irreponsible.
Hero??? WTF, she didn't do it for the money or fame??WTF I notice all the family have sponsors logos on them. She did an amazing thing, no doubt about it, but she did it for herself and for the sponsorship dollar. She did not cure cancer or help those not as lucky as her. She spent 7 months at sea, I'm sure there are thousands of sailors who wish they could afford to do that. SHE DID THIS FOR MONEY!!!!! If she did this for her self why does she have a manager? Pfft.
@unapro3 She did this because she set herself a personal goal and chased her dream, the 'sponsors' helped pay for the yacht (which she does not own) and the preparation. IF ANYTHING THE SPONSORS DID IT FOR THE MONEY AS IT IS CLEARLY ADVERTISING THEIR BUSINESS ON THE WORLD'S STAGE. The sponsors Ten and One are the same company and got the exclusive media rights so they could make a fortune. Yes she will make money out of this, but so she should. She achieved an amazing task regardless.
yep, what a disgrace this is. an the PM such a puppet of the media. This kid should have been in school. This whole event is an example of a spoilt child seeking attention and fame, her parents should be ashamed of themselves risking her life for money
yep, what a disgrace this is. an the PM such a puppet of the media. This kid should have been in school. This whole event is an example of a spoilt child seeking attention and fame, her parents should be ashamed of themselves risking her life for money
did any of u not watch the whole clip?at the end the said that she had to disagree with the prime min. and not concider herself a hero.she didnt do it for the fame or anything else.she did it cos she had a dream....
shouldnt she have been in school? or dont they have schools up in QLD? hero? please, just another little girl looking for fame and fortune.. justine beiber must be her idol.
Wtf why brand her a "hero"? This "adventure" was for her own sake. She didnt save anyone. The least she coulda done was donate some of her earnings to charity. 5 channels were dedicated to her! Its ridiculous! The term "hero" should be reserved for those servicemen who are doctors, in the army, nurses, ambos, firemen, policemen and others who do it for the wellbeing of this country. Dam Rudd's just in it for the votes.
@s0stwin .........I couldnt agree more well said................but we all know that media likes rating and this country is full of lazy and stupid people let just hope that my childrens wont follow her...........(but it would be a good lesson for my kids if the news was that she is lost some where in sea. I know its bad thing to say but I love my kids)
@MegaMorb you reckon the guy is a complete fraud...every policy he has announced has been a complete flop and waste of money...anf howard is gone from the scene now anyway.
@MegaMorb How so? Rudd fucked over the economy big time with his contradictary budget. Howard on the otherhand gave us the lowest levels of unemployment while still sustaining high economic growth. So i would say in terms of economics Howard is the better choice.
@MegaMorb ...not that is not all that matters..that kinda thinking is like saying hey i got heres but I ain't got aids so all is good....im sure you are intelligent enough to figure the rest ...and besides that was just an anology in the real scheme of things Rudd is demonstrating himself to be much worse than Howard.
...well, one has to be fairly fit to accomplish this, is that heroic?
is she from a sailing and wealthy background? How many others could also have done it? Was it risky? as risky as soldiers that have faced dangers and are doing so now for "our freedoms" ?
Australian of the year?
reflect and there is bound to be others more deserving (?)...just an opinion!
Congrats girl!!!! I have I have dropped in on your page everyday since you left and your trip was a truly amazing thing. It's hard to imagine for my view point living in the mountains Enjoy yourself and your fame. From the heart of the Rockie Mountains, Wigs from Aspen.
Sorry Jessica, you're going to have to get used to sycophants like Rudd reflecting in your glory and using it to sell their own tawdry wares. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you already miss the open sea.
congrats jessica... Australians must be proud of you. I am Asian who just recently live here but I really admire and feel proud of her achivement. she's brave and a model to the young ones...
@nonameisacat yep, what a disgrace this is. an the PM such a puppet of the media. This kid should have been in school. This whole event is an example of a spoilt child seeking attention and fame, her parents should be ashamed of themselves risking her life for money

@s0stwin i dont think she was chasing after sponsors i think sponsors were chasing after her an what does it matter if she makes some money from this
Frenzal88 1 year ago
@Frenzal88 that shes been branded a "hero" by everyone. The term "hero" shouldnt be missused and should be reserved for those who have actually dont something appropriate for this country such as doctors, ambos, firemen, policemen, army servicemen,etc...I congratulate her on her trip though but is it really a big deal or is Australia just seeking some global attention? Especially rudd.

She is a real inspiration to all the other girls who have parents rich enough to buy them a yacht.
spenceII 1 year ago 13
@spenceII i thought her parents friends owned it or sumthin
Frenzal88 1 year ago
@spenceII You realise you are exhibiting jealousy don't you?
Logicbeatslies 1 year ago
@Logicbeatslies Yep, unless you think an attention seeking rich girl going on a boat trip is the greatest thing in the world, you're jealous.
I'm not jealous. I'm annoyed that this story recieved the attention it got. She was rich enough to own a yacht, lets give her a medal shall we? Who cares about the scientists, teachers and engineers who actually contribute something to society?
spenceII 1 year ago
@spenceII My first reaction was, shit I would have loved to do that, etc.
When I watched her on TV, I felt much different because she is a great role model.
Look, my distant memories of being that age involve people thinking the worst of me, and in my confusion, me playing up to an undeserved reputation, which I'm still paying for, 20 odd years on...
Yet, when I was 16, I showed every sign of being a mature and useful member of society, for sure!
I feel aggrieved I'm not a famous scientists.
Logicbeatslies 1 year ago
@spenceII wow you clearly have no idea, she did not own the boat, and her parents are not 'rich'. I would like to see YOU go around the world in a small boat like that. Even a sailing veteran that accomplished this task when HE was 45 WITH A CREW said it was incomprehensible that a 16 yr old girl could do it solo. and she proved them all wrong. What I sense with you is a lack of self achievement, because you know deep down that she has achieved more in life than you ever will, and she is only 16
aholl29 1 year ago
@aholl29 I do not recognise the abuse of buoyancy for 8 months to be an achievement that I should respect. Achievements of this 'personal journey' sort can only be appreciated by the individual. Why should I respect her personal achievement? My appreciation is much better placed in the achievements of people who are making the world a better place.
Also, I don't have a lack of self achievement. Infact, I feel quite fulfilled in knowing that what I'm doing now will one day make a difference.

spenceII 1 year ago
@spenceII you are beyond fucking dumb..the yacht was leant to her so that she could do this...have you even been on a boat before??
its a pity they dont give awards to brainless slags who sit at a computer dumping on great people. you would be a champion.
MrFakunda 1 year ago
@MrFakunda Whether it was for a personal sense of achievement, wealth or attentions her motivation was self centred. She didnt solve any real problem, she simply made up an obstacle and overcame it. If she put her effort into solving a real problem or at least raised money for charity during the trip, she would have my respect; but she didn't.
I'm sure you do pity that there is no awards for internet arseholes, you seem quite fond of praising people for no reason.
spenceII 1 year ago
@spenceII her parents are far from rich fucktard
MrFakunda 1 year ago
@spenceII That sarcasm is uncalled for. Because *you* don't have the means doesn't mean you can judge this act. Sailing alone, especially around the world, is an achievement that very few can master, let alone at 16. You should get out of your room and fight for a relevant life, my friend.
odracirseraoseia1999 1 year ago
@odracirseraoseia1999 Like I have said, what she did, she did for personal reasons. The reward she found was her own sence of achievement and therefore does not require my respect. I reserve my respect for those who act selflessly and gain far too little in return.
spenceII 1 year ago
@spenceII There are no unselfish acts, man. You always do something because it fulfills you. Even if that helps a lot of people, there's always a sense of achievement, otherwise you wouldn't do it.
odracirseraoseia1999 1 year ago
@odracirseraoseia1999 Selflessness concerns putting others welfare above your own. It is the motivations behind your actions that determine whether they are selfless or otherwise, not the profit one gains from these actions.
spenceII 1 year ago
@odracirseraoseia1999 Also, your need to rely on ad hominem attacks, does little to help your argument
spenceII 1 year ago
@spenceII And if you read closely you won't find any argumentum ad hominem in what I've written. I criticised your judgment, and in the end I suggested a change. I understand that being faced with your unnecessary sarcasm might be uncomfortable, but finding fallacies where they don't exist won't help you mate.
odracirseraoseia1999 1 year ago
@odracirseraoseia1999 You "suggested a change" to a problem that you invented. I lead a satisfyingly "relevant" life and to suggest that I do not is a pathetic move.

Good on her for doing something hard. The real problem is with our society. What place do kids have in breaking records? This was not a record for the youngest person to sail around the world. This was a record for "who will be the youngest person to risk death and a mental breakdown". I'm fine with people risking death for records but let's make sure they are adults not kids.
thesop21 1 year ago
@thesop21 you my friend suffer from tunneled vision. At the age of 14 I had left school and was earning $63,000 per year with an I.T firm which shall remain nameless. At 14 I was earning more money than my parents. Who is to say that a person is 'to young' to take risks'? Is it not that individuals choice? Just because MOST 16 year olds do not have the mental capacity to navigate around town, should a young girl like Jess be penalized because she can navigate around the world?
aholl29 1 year ago
@aholl29 You worked at an I.T firm with your spelling? Jesus!
oneweirdfellah 1 year ago
When I was 16 I made $120k in a year. The Sydney Morning Herald, December 23,1998 described me as a "boy genius". All that is completely irrelevant to this. I know the true value of doing physical things and it's beneficial. The Guiness Book of Records doesn't do records based on age anymore after Jessica Dubroff, the 7 year old pilot attempted a record and died. Keep kids out of records where they can die. It is irreponsible.

Pfft.
unapro3 1 year ago
@unapro3 She did this because she set herself a personal goal and chased her dream, the 'sponsors' helped pay for the yacht (which she does not own) and the preparation. IF ANYTHING THE SPONSORS DID IT FOR THE MONEY AS IT IS CLEARLY ADVERTISING THEIR BUSINESS ON THE WORLD'S STAGE. The sponsors Ten and One are the same company and got the exclusive media rights so they could make a fortune. Yes she will make money out of this, but so she should. She achieved an amazing task regardless.
aholl29 1 year ago
7 months with nothing but the sea, wind, and sails.
Coming back home meeting thousands of people calling her a hero.
She probably wants to do another trip ASAP
Hero? Not at all. A role model? Christ no!

P-A-R-T.....Y? BECAUSE I GOTTA!!!!!!

@MegaMorb How so? Rudd fucked over the economy big time with his contradictary budget. Howard on the otherhand gave us the lowest levels of unemployment while still sustaining high economic growth. So i would say in terms of economics Howard is the better choice.
