This is really helpful. Well done. We need someone to do an unboxing or review of our new digital white balance/ color correction / exposure product - works with FCP, Premiere, Aperture, Las Vegas, Lightroom, video, in-camera custom WB, DSLR, etc. See us at digitalimageflow(dot)com - we will ship you a free one if you are interested...check the listing for new product (DKC-Pro) on our home page and contact us ..thanks!
@shiweesh2 there's no doubt that this gap between what is semi professional and pro is little now. d7000 is perhaps all many of us want. go to... freedslr . cong change cong with com and get a chance to win a Brand New Nikon D7000
Thanks so much. I have noticed my WB is way off, and don't have a gray card on me, and won't make it to the store today for pictures. I'll be using the TP today!
Thank you so much for this information. I've been doing some searching and everyone goes into all the details about color temperatures which is great, but they don't tell you what to do about it. Thank you for this very straight forward, step by step video!!!
Okay... I got this to work. but will it just stay in that setting when your finished or do you have to manually put it in that setting and how do you do that?
@atamnye Press the WB button on the left hand side of your camera, and turn the shutter speed dial (top right) until it says WB PRE. When you look through your viewfinder, the letters PRE will flash until you take the picture following the instructions above.
the TP would let more light through so your camera can take the reading easier. If you're worried about the sturdiness of toilet paper, try to use a paper coffee filter.
Why be so negative? This guy is just trying to show us a way to improvise if you are at home or anywhere without a gray card. As he specifically said, he doesn't use it enough to need to buy a card and the TP is good enough for him. People like you really need to appreciate the fact that people are trying to help and I think this video is very helpful if you dont have a 18% gray card available at all times everywhere you take your camera. And no need for inmature name calling anyway!
Yes, but what I do is take a picture of a sheet of paper held at about a foot or two away from the camera with/without the flash and set that picture as the white balance... A white wall, counter top, or anything you know that is white will work to calibrate the camera...

when he took a pic of his boring colored couch it had no.... umm tone, with the white balance on d-0 it had more sense of color, looks better too, i got the D90 just three days ago, its fantastic
Make your own white balance filter. Take a standard UV filter, and cut out tracing paper in a circle...now fit it inside the UV filter, screw it on camera...and presto...your very own white balance filter.
of course you can, theres a preset function in the wb setting, select it from the settings menu it will ask you to take a shot of something that is white and sets its wb automatically to correct it
yeah you can under white balance in camera settings then preset white balance. It worked really amazing for florescent ligting which was way way off under auto...I am a new found believer in toilet paper white balance
It surely works better than the Auto White balance.
I dint try Pre WB with toilet paper because of lint/fiber sticking to the lense, I tried simple white plastic carry bag you get when shopping at walmart and it works just fine and did a pretty good job.
How do I Pre WB (Nikon D80) if I want to mix flash and available light?
Thanks buddy, waiting for some more tips/tricks from you.

This is a useful tool. I use it a couple times a week.
Nice job of explaining it. I use an Expodisk but toilet paper and a lot of other things work well.
Thanks, Jack

Good vid, but I think a coffee filter works better, the big advantage would be no dust, TP is very loosely pressed together and very dusty.

total n00b here. so if i understand correctly, the reason for using TP is so that the camera can measure WB through the TP?
Does this work if u substitute with white paper and repeat steps exactly? tks

It'll save you time from trying to invent a better way to take the WB.

Two ply something. Likely whatever was on sale.
