Things have actually gotten much better since the days when I sat in the Figaro wiith Buffy and Patrick. Remember that J. Edgar Hoover was still chief of the alternate government at the time and there was no reality, much less justice for Native Americans like Leonard. Justice comes slowly and is never complete, but that's what being a country is about. Buffy has always remained true to the cause of justice and decency for all. We all should have this level of integrity.
I really like this version with the vibrato in Buffy's voice. It reminds me of more traditional songs and you can really hear the emotion behind the words.
To clarify, the black balling of artist like fantastic Buffy Saint Marie during the 60's and 70's made sure recordings weren't available at concert time and message hushed. The cowards are who we are, "the people" who let this situation persist. People afraid to get involved. Situations like Pelitier persist even with Amnesty Internat'l involved. John F. Kennedy tried to get rid of CIA and Fed Reserve. He ordered gvmt presses print our own money the week-end he was killed. Then money destroyed.
I'm reading Winona LaDuke's Recovering the Sacred. She likens the pretense for the U.S. attack at Wounded Knee to the "weapons of mass destruction" pretense for invading Iraq in 2003.
actually he DID kill them. He was tried, convicted, and went through 7 appeals that all found him guilty. And the "Annie Mae" from this song was killed by friends of his (2 of which have now been convicted for her murder). They killed her because she heard him admit to killing those 2 agents. So, this song is a lie, and your rant is a lie.
@moodinator123 You are an absolute moron. One of the two native men found innocent because it was self-defense has admitted to being the one who actually
shot & killed the two agents. When they were found innocent the U.S. wanted its pound of flesh so when they pulled some illegel bull shit to get Leonard from Canada the judge did not allow much of the material that had been introduced at
those men's trial to be introduced at Leonard's trial. The jurors couldn't see L.P.'s
You actually trust and believe there is justice in American Courts??? You are one naive person. There is a political agenda in our legal system. That does not make it honest. Note most flags in courtrooms have fringes on them. That indicates that we are under Marshall law and that you have no rights under that law. No shit!
How can you draw this conclusion about me and my beliefs? I do not support the US justice system when it comes to the way it treats and deals with native Americans! I support the native American people and there cause all the way and when and where it is possible I try to further the same.
I think Buffy should be noted for the work she has done. She was not trated fairly back in the 60s and 70s. People can actually learn from her,not be afraid of what she will say or God forbide she tells the truth. I defend her too the max.
During an interview last week on Democracy Now, it was reported that the gvmt, White House, had asked radio stations to black ball certain artists, like Buffy St. Marie, to repress her message. Likely this song is also to some degree. Pelitier will never be released. Political, like Waco and Idaho massacres and real facts will be covered up for years. Poor America, land of the enslaved, home of cowards.
Did Buffy write this song? The Indigo Girls also did a nice job with it for anyone who's interested. Thanks for posting....despite the shaky camera it is wonderful to hear and see Buffy!
I agree! The Indigo Girls' rendition of this song really does it justice... so much pathos and empathy. The original is always good, but a brilliant cover version can be an excellent tribute to the original.
Buffy just performed in Santa Fe for a free concert! I'm so glad my parents told me I HAD to go. Her songs speak truth even now for my generation. I've never been politically active before, but I'm ready to make change this fall. She told our audience to vote "better". I couldn't agree more.
I had the good fortune to see Buffy in 1967, I think it was, in Seattle. She remains one of my heroes. Still gorgeous, still a powerful voice. I'm glad she still has a following of caring people.
I read the book so, many, Years, ago,.... Never to be forgotten. As the atrocities continue around this little world! More songs to be written, ??? The stupidity goes on & ON.... Buffy, my early political advisor...
didn't mean to sound crude. I probably couldn't do that well holding a camera especially my outdate video recorder that looks like a little tv. LOL thanks for sharing though and I would love to see her perform live. I only got to meet her in person but not at concert.
