  • Thanks for the quick reply, I've got two cans of Plasti-Kote High Heat BBQ Black spray paint, I'm copying your design over here in UK :-) They all say on the cans ideally use a primer for metal application but none of the primers state high heat bbq use so I'll probably go straight on with a few coats of the black

  • I'm just about to start one of these, did you spray the drum with primer after the burn or just put the black straight on the steel?

  • @KaznBigG I just applied the paint directly to the steel. I used Rustoleum High Heat BBQ Black in the Quart sized container and put on 3 coats.

  • Hey that is a deep fat fryer thermometer (for turkey fryer), get a grill gauge at a sporting goods store. They are only about an inch or so long.and way more heavy duty plus it will not be in your way like that giant probe is. Grill gauges will show better temp readings also, oyu can mark your sweet spot with a sharpie and check it from far away (inside the house). You have a cool set up- post a vid when your cook a brisket or something bro. How do you arrange the coals?

  • @lingbopper88 I've already replaced the thermometer with a large dial bbq specific one. I mix the lump charcoal with my wood and fill the basket. You really don't need to use a lot of wood in this smoker.

  • @fvg3401 no water needed. The fat and juices drip onto the coals and create steam. Sweet delicious meat steam.

  • Do you have to set up water system in your drum smoker when smoking meat ?

  • How much are the 55 gallon drums?

  • @TheLongbeachguy The drums can be found for free if you look around. I've heard of people paying anywhere from nothing to 100.00 for them though. Check craigslist, sometimes they have them listed there.

  • @pyrogyrodude Ok, thank you! A free drum is a good drum!

  • I thunk it was called a Up rite Drum Smoker

  • UDS is ugly drum smoker. Google it and check out the smoke ring and the bbq brethren

  • Glad my video has been helpful! I'll be posting some more bbq related vids this summer! Stay tuned.

  • @trinalab yes, I used rustoleum high temp bbq paint. I've had to repaint once due to being out side year round.

  • @adlibsteelorchestra no problem!

  • @Fishinboat119 try to find one that was used to hold something non toxic...food or food grade contents are best. Mine originally held virgin mineral spirits. Knowing that, I ran 2 "clean out burns" thru it hot enough to cherry the barrel. Stay fast away from anything ending in "ene" such as benzene. Also, if possible avoid the lined barrels.

  • When lookin for a drum to use, what sort of contents previously stored in the drum should i stay away from or look for? Thanks

  • I hope you used a high heat paint. If not the paint burn and fall off when you use it.

  • love tha element

  • I finished mine using your ideas it works great. Thank you.

  • Always good to see a fellow Ringer at work! Nice smoker Tom!

  • OOOOOH, I so want to do this. They've got finished products that go for some $500, I can make a massive smoker for less than $100. Turkey legs and ribs all summer, dammit!

  • Thermometer probe to long, though have to admit Nice Job... Enjoy it, and thanks for sharing.....

  • you sir have inspired me. This will be a weekend project.

  • nice job, hope you had some good eats over the summer

  • Over the summer? I'm still using it! I grill and smoke year round!

  • good build info...thanks

  • i install casters on the bottom of mine for easy moving!

  • You said something about seasoning the inside of the drum. Is there anything else I should do other then just burning a large fire inside the drum?

  • To season it, you want to rub the inside of the drum down with canola oil, peanut oil, or spray it down with pam cooking spray. Then burn a basket or two of charcoal with your favorite lump. This will give a nice dark oily coating that will protect it from rusting inside.

  • I use a UDS too, like your idea with the Weber charcoal grill for bottom of coal basket. hope you enjoy your UDS as much as I do mine. Grill on Dude! thanks for video.

  • I love it!!! The only thing I would suggest is replacing your side mounted temp gauge with the type that slides in and out. This would make your coal basket a lot easier to get in and out.

  • The temp gauge has a clip that allows it to slide in and out. I was just being lazy. I'm actually going to get a 1/2 bolt, drill it out, and mount it in there so I can just slide it out that way. The clip allowed for too much wiggle and I ended up getting the temp of the coals a few times, lol.
