Get version by DKM. But you can't compare this to the Dubliners version. your not going to be drinking a pint to this version in some pub in Dublin, unless you like Metalicas rapeage of whiskey in the jar too, but then you'd be a douche bag and probably still waiting for your first pube, so your opinion wouldn't matter anyway. Happy Paddy's day.
You haven't understood anything. This song has so much soul and feeling, that the Luke Perry version will never be able to reach.
If you're not a rocker, you don't understand rock itself and shouldn't be commenting it. This version has much more emotion than any good-night-lullaby
If you're gonna try an argue that this surpasses the definitive Dubliners version, at least get the names right. Also, I guess you've never taken the time to listen to Luke Kelly sing this, if you did, you'd know it's not a fucking lullaby. Twit.
You may not believe it, but I listened to it till the end. It only got more and more boring. It's just too slow. Listen to it, if you like, why not? But quit writing bull**** about anything you just dont understand.
I listen to old fashioned music myself, may it be Blues or Irish Folk or Rock 'n' Roll... but that version -in my opinion- just lacks something. I don't like it.
Never said I didn't like Dropkick Murphys or this style of music (I have seen them live many, many times) only that I prefer or respect the Dubliners version more IN THIS CASE. Now, as for Fields of Athenry, well I think the Murphys version beats the Dubliners hands down. But . . ah fuck it, dont wanna fall out, especially when we are both fans of this band. Each to their own eh? Peace.
hmm interesting, shane macgowan actually likes dropkick. he even sang on "good rats" shane's irish and he appreciates dropkick murphys, luke's version has no music its just vocals. the pogues and dropkick do the song justice it deserves
If we all agreed on music and everything else life would be boring and hell on earth, dont hate or judge someone because you dont see eye to eye. Life without music would be like walking through a desert without water, shitty. I dislike killswitch engage but some of you may like it, I dont go to that page and write how much they suck yada yada, so while I dont agree or disagree with what some of you are saying I dont see it effecting everyone elses point of view either.
why are you dipshits arguing about the 'authenticity' of a 'traditional' song when it was originally released in a Behan play in the mid-20th century??? It's a great song (I perform it myself, with acoustic guitar), but come on... it's not like it was handed down from the 18th century or something! Shut the hell up and appreciate different takes on a theme... broaden you horizons and stop hating. It's stupid.
I dont know all the stories of you people who hate Dropkick Murphys so much but from the sound of it, you're people still over there in Ireland who should have plenty of authentic Irish music to listen to. So why are you on youtube dissing a band that has achieved so much success in America by fusing Irish music themes with American rock? The last relative I had who lived in Ireland came over and fought in our revolution but I have never been so proud of my Irish roots as since I've heard DM
well said XD the original was sung with music so you could get the full meaning behind the lyrics, also this guy cant sing for shite, sounds like greenday
They are artists, they are allowed to cover whatever song they like. This is 2008, they are making a classic song more current and to be honest I enjoyed listening to the song. It is difficult for any cover to live up to the original and I don't think that their intent was to outshine or overshadow the original. They are artists and they took a classic Irish song that I'm sure they hold in high esteem and they paid tribute to it. Leave your immaturity at the door please.
Dude... it's an Irish standard. It's meant to be screwed around with. There's no authoritative version of it. Luke Perry's version is a completely different style.
Luke Perry ?? Was talking about a different Luke "dude". It's not meant to be screwed with, it's meant to be interpreted by musicians who understand the song and know how to play.
Amen to that, man. I like the Dropkicks but this is nearly blasphemous. They don't even keep to Behan's lyrics (I know Luke's version has one line changed from the original play-text, but Luke can do whatever he wants, after all).
judging from the vid you guys dont look to excited. SHit when tehy played for us it took God knows how much security to keep our ass from rushing the stage.
the pogues version is awesome, too. but this fuckin rocks !

. . but the Dubs version still isnt a lullaby! :)

Ok, that way I can accept your statement ;-)
The Dubliners have some very good songs, too. But I prefer the "faster" ones, like Irish Rover..
Btw, DKM and Ronnie Drew played Flannigans Ball together, so they're not that far from the Dubliners *g*

Have a listen to Luke singing it to hear what it should sound like. Your version does not do the song the justice it deserves... It's pure crap!
