Re-zoning is not illegal. It happens all the time. Often someone suffers so that a lot of people can gain. When highways expand, there are always people who are upset that they have to sell or that their property is negatively effected. He really couldn't do much with his education because he died in Iraq. As for art school students I know what you're saying, trust me. I've done industrial work my entire life... welding, refinery construction, forklift, machine operator, and even a deckhand on a boat. As for moving trust me I want too, If you know where the jobs are at , let me know.

My comparison was right on. Your comparison sucked. If one person was making bricks, fine. But if 100,000 people were out there making bricks, changing laws making the smashing of your car legal, there wouldn't be a 'fucking' thing you could do about it and that's what Wal-Mart is to homeowners like that lady. You need to look beyond their bin of $5 DVDs and look at the big picture.

Hiker64, your comparison sucks. That wal-mart didn't materialize over fucking night. If someone was outside my house for a week making bricks and they told me I'd be hit with one, you bet your ass I'd do something. If the property value is declining it will keep going down. My advice was great and I stand behind it 100%. Just like wal mart stands behind it's great values!

Why should she have to move? If someone threw a rock at your car and smashed it up cutting it's value by 25% and someone said, "Just sell the car and get what you can for it and stop whining about it," how would you feel? Walmart favors products made in cheap labor markets (aka china) as a result manufacturing jobs in north america are being lost and locally owned businesses cant compete. the walton clan are raking in billions of profit and regular people cant get a decent job so they are forced to buy cheap stuff at walmart, a nice cyclic trap

What's wrong with a business cutting costs and making more money? The manufacturing jobs are naturally going to go to the lowest bidder and if that's China, good for them. People have to change with the times and their are plenty of jobs to replace those that go over seas. You can't halt progress to save a job that is dieing. If we did that, we'd still have 20 acre farms, shoes sewn by hand, and we'd be backward like Africa.

Actually she didn't. The town re-zoned for Wal-Mart to build near her. So actually Wal-Mart paying off the town to re-zone a residental zone for commerical sounds like a evil plot to me. Or at least very calculated.

Re-zoning is not illegal. It happens all the time. Often someone suffers so that a lot of people can gain. When highways expand, there are always people who are upset that they have to sell or that their property is negatively effected. But its gotta happen because we can't keep all of our roads one lane forever. Lots of people benefit from the Wal-Mart that this lady doesn't like. Sucks for her -- but it's not evil.

Just because something happens a lot, even if it's legal, it doesn't make it moral. If you applied your argument of utility across the board I'm sure you'd find that if these forces moved against you and yours that you'd probably feel differently.

Sure, but trying to do things "legally" leaves less subjectivity that trying to do things "morally." No two people completely agree on what's moral and immoral. The law gives you a much better guide.

The legal system is based on morals. It's a standard of what the majority of society has decided is moral. That standard is open for debate and we can change it if we think it's not working for the best moral outcome, the law is not static.

This lady is nutz! Boarding up her windows and calling the cops. She said that the noise came bouncing through the atmosphere. I think that was just the loud buzzing noise that is inside her head. Obviously, if no tickets were issued, the noise could not have been that loud. I think she had a problem (political in nature) with WalMart to begin with and was trying to interrupt the construction process with bogus complaints.

Actually they're not bogus complaints. If she lived next to a night club which played their music too loud the cops would be out there in a heartbeat. Also there are laws about how far commerical property is supposed to be from residental, at least in my city there are. So I think the lady has some basis for a legitmate complaint.

Your assuming that Wal-Mart is getting special privileges, but you could just as easily assume that no laws have been broken. Wal-Mart isn't the Mafia. The company plays by the rules, they are just good at playing the game. If this lady had a real claim their would be lawyers knocking on her door to sue Wal-Mart. Everyone wants a piece of the guy with deep pockets.

You kidding? Her fence is 30 feet from the loading dock with huge block walls to reflect the noise right back at her house. Forklift and truck 'backup' beeping is insanely loud. Local government is probably afraid to do anything to Wal-Mart, after all Wal-Mart would say, "Do you have any idea how much revenue we are bringing to your little town?" And local government folds.

The policeman that investigates the lady's claim couldn't give a rats booty about how big or small Wal-Mart is. If they violate the law he writes them up, and if they aren't violating the law, he drives away leaving the crazy lady to go back inside and pet her cats.
