  • Philly still grows bassists.

  • @phillybass101 That's what Joe Zawinul use to say!

He said the "best bassists in the United States come from Philadelphia"!

"The best bassists in Africa come from Cameroon"!

  • So underrated and unknown these days. Check out his work with Jazz Is Dead and the Steve Kimock Band.

  • this simple bass line, can last a whole 6 min.....GENIUS!! well and a whole lot of smooth lines as well....Alphonso Johnson such a beast!!

  • sounds like Flora Purim on vocals too, this was an awesome era for "fusion" jazz.

  • This WHOLE ALBUM is GREAT!!!! With George Duke all over the production & Narada being just a MONSTER on the drums!!!! This is when fusion music was unafraid and creative!!!!!

  • both versions are fantastic, Alphonso with Flora, or Eddie's electric horn. its a tossup

  • Thank you so much for posting this song! Its an exercise in multiples of three. The first section being in nine beats to the bar. The soprano solo section is a six bar phrase in 3/4 time, Brilliant! This song reminds me of the time I met my first girlfriend in high school, although she did not get this music at all, it still reminds me of her.

  • Wow!!! I grew up on this music. I remember playing funk and a friend turned me on

Alphonso and Duke Weather report Mahavishnu,my playing style changed those shedding days were great, going to Jams and i learned Al Mustapha the Beloved

Love this, brings back memories when I was 17 years old...........................Thank you so much

  • Beautiful!

  • Very nice!!!

  • yeaaah ¡¡

  • ********NICE********

  • this isn't a bad cut at all! Quite nice!!

  • Alphonso Johnson - Unsung hero of the Bass World. One of the top cats no doubt! Before Jaco and Stanley, there was Alphonso. Thanks for posting.

  • @ghafoor10

    my sentiments exactly.

  • another great philly bassist

    if I am not mistaken!

  • @Azaan1016 Yep,You're Right!!!

  • makes the hairs on my arms rise..so good

  • Simply Great! I love Johnson's playing!

  • wow, can't believe i found this. i have " sunburst, " love this tune. now i hear my musical lover FLORA singing this tune!

  • like your music do you play musicminor

  • Yes I do!! Mostly Keys & Guitar!! Started out as a Drummer many years ago after hearing Buddy Rich!!!(RIP) Played Bass also!!! I guess I'm a "Jack Of All Trades" and "A Master Of None"!!(lol) Not playing much these days due to Arthur!!! :-D

  • One of my favourite songs.Played it a million times on the LP. Found the compilation CD with this and other best of songs on it a few years ago and ordered it. Thanks for posting it!

  • One of the great bass stars of the early mid 70s, and truly one of the best bass sounds around to date, but underrated and not even known or spoken in many bass circles today. Would love to hear him put together a solo band and tour the country.

  • I met the bass player for Melting Euphoria at a Ozric Tentacles concert which they opened for Ozric Tentacles. Melting Euphoria is similar to Gong and Hawkwind. The bass player was very friendly and could play bass very well.

  • Who was the bass player your speaking of.

  • Very modern Album back on the 70's and still !

  • Intergalactic moonfruit...

  • Would love to hear Henderson's version. It's been a long time since I heard it.

  • I just posted it!!!

  • love eddie's version. and his 'realization' album as well...

  • Didn't Eddie Henderson also do a great version of this song?

  • Yes he did this cut on his "Sunburst" album!! Featuring Alphonso Johnson,George Duke,Harvey Mason,Bennie Maupin,Julian Priester,Buster Williams, & Billy Hart!! Everyone that played in the "Herbie Hancock Sextet" is on this album except Hancock!! I'll post Henderson's version soon!!

  • The rhythm is a crazy one indeed. It is a good rendition to the old Mahavishnu orchestra's Bird of Prey song.

  • great cut!

  • Great Album....

  • That samba in 3/4 is baaaaad! Gary takes a nice solo and Narada is nailing that groove. I love Dukey's voicings on this modal vamp!

  • A great recording date w/Dukey, Alphonso, Narada from '76. I love this LP! Alphonso was the prelude to Jaco but funkier.

  • Great Post from a Great Album!!!

  • Thanks! It is a excellent album!!

  • to me, this is a classic!!! w.k.d.u in philly played this way back when!!!
