87% of Irish want there lgbt friends to be able to say ''I do'' But were not even givin the chance to vote on a issue we shouldnt have to vote on, we all are citizens of the republic of Ireland and i thought that ment we were all 100% equal.
Its time to end marriage discrimination Fine Gael!
@MrFubbels MarriAge is a Christian consitiution? I'm sure you mean institution! Anyway, it isn't just a Christian institution - what a ridiculous thing to say. You must have never heard of civil marriages, nor other non-Christian marriages. As for the Bible argument, why should it be held as an authority over societies that are essentially secular but accepting of religious freedom? Besides, the Sodom part of the Bible has always been disputed by Christians as to its exact meaning.
if marriage is a Christian constitution then why do other people from other religions or non religious get married in many different ways and are accepted as a married couple everywhere by everyone but once it is a same sex marriage then it isn't recognized? it is like that lady who lost her partner when the stage in an Indiana concert collapsed. they aren't considered a couple in a civil union even though they were in another state in the same damn country.
Would it not be nice if we (adults) could decide who we love and who we want to spend the rest of our lives with. It's hard enough to find someone who respects you and loves you for who you are...but then if you have to fight for it....that's such a waste of your time and energy. I wish everybody could choose for them selves...that;s all we ask!
Exactly, if marriage is so tied to religion and the bible, then how are non religious people allowed to marry. We have moved on as society, and it is time to go the next step, for marriage equality.
This is a great video - puts the point across really well, and no indication right until the end as to what it's about, so you're bound to watch the whole thing... well done, Marriage Equality!
Will people shut up about homosexuality influencing children and what not. It's the 21st century, children can comprehend just about everything. I always knew my uncle was gay, and all that I thought was my uncle is happy, not I should follow in his footsteps. Homosexuality is natural, and the gay population has my vote on same sex marriage!
You can rediscover an ancient knowledge of an awareness of the role of homosexuality upon human evolution in the new book, "Fixed Stars Rise," and at wwwdotfixedstarsrisingdotblogspotdotcom
This engages the imagination of the viewer: First, I asked myself, why the boy so nervous. Secondly, I asked myself, why the asked give their permission without more discussion. Thirdly, I asked myself why the boy is asking more than two people. Fourthly, I asked myself are Sinead's parents divorced and remarried and is he asking Sinead's step parents as well. Fifthly, is the young man playing a joke asking for the hand of every parent with a daughter named Sinead, is he mad? Effective!
Very provocative message... our Irish brothers and sisters who love and want to marry someone of their own sex must get the permission of 4,000,000 Irish citizens... Here in the USA, we have to get the permission of 311,092,153...
This video is so, so, so true and to the point. Straight folks don't have to aks the whole country for marriage. Why should gays and lesbians? Gay marriage hurts no one, it only provides rights to those who currently cannot enjoy these same exact rights. I hope Ireland will make a big step forward towards equality. Best of luck to gay and lesbians in Ireland, and justice for ALL citizens.
The thing about the Civil Partnership is that it doesn't give equal rights to marriage, especially when it comes to the children of same-sex couples. For example, if one partner is the birth mother and she dies, her civil partner wouldn't have any rights to raise the child, even though to the child they are equally its parents.
Can someone explain to me what the opposition to this argument is? Really don't have a clue. Also what were the stipulations of the Civil Partnership Bill of 2010? How far did it go and how much further does a subsequent bill need to go?
Do people really think that by binding gay legal union, they will prevent gay people to be gay?
Everything would remain the same, except for the fact gay couples will have the opportunity to legalize their unions, hence permitting a better and fairer way of set the rights of the spouses involved.
This insistance on denying people's rights and this narrow-mind is really annoying.
even though i'm an athiest, i always took the stance, marrige is a christian constitution and the bible specificly denies the coupling of same-sex persons, therefore i was in support of same-sex civil partnerships, but not marriage.. but having watched this, it's really hit home, to stop being pedantic, allowing samesex marriage is about just making the playing field level for everyone. i always wondered why it needed to be marriage, why partnership isnt enough, then this just opened my eyes.
@MrFubbels Marriage is not a Christian constitution. Marriage existed before Christianity was invented and in areas of the world where there isn't any Christianity.
@carthag partnership what we have now is basically co habitation they recognise your a couple and give you an extra 1298 legal rights but with marriage the same and hetrosexual marriage you get an extra 7865 legal rights and they extend from adoption to your spouse being able to decide your funeral partnership is sorta regcogniseing your dating something straight people cant get and marriage something gay people cant get! Its very confusingbut basically means some rights but 6000 less den mariag
What sounds more immoral- banning atheists from marriage or banning homosexuals from marriage? These ideas are both ridiculous. If it's OK to be atheist and it's OK to be gay then it should be FINE for gay people to marry.
The problem is the conflict between freedoms. The freedom of some religions which have a problem with the concept vs the individual freedom to marry whom we love.
I have yet to here a compelling argument of exactly how someone else marriage discredits one's own. I do have to wonder what the limits will be, and what justifies them. Rules regarding multiple partner marriages or marriage to close relatives, etc.
I do believe comparing it to marrying farm animals are just stupid though.
@richard233 Except there is no direct conflict between those freedoms. The only possible conflict would be requiring a religion to perform gay marriages. And that doesn't happen. For example, in Canada (as far as I know) gay people can get married. But ministers/priests have the right to refuse to perform a gay marriage.
@theeponym That's part of it, but the other part comes from having differing definitions of marriage. Given that churches believe they have the exclusive rights to perform a "true" marriage, the act of someone else creating a marriage that they themselves would be unwilling to perform causes them to consider the act an act of mocking god. And no, I'm not a believer of that, just an observer. People take their religion very seriously, which is why we have suicide bombers and the like.
You're absolutely right. I'll think bout something. The problem is... I can't do this by myself. But! Maybe I'll figure something out. I'll ask some people for help.
Wish there were some ads like this in the U.S...it'd be nice to see something promoting tolerance and acceptance, instead of violence and discrimination.
Let "marriage" be a church-thing for those who want it (and folks can belong to whatever church shares and supports their beliefs). Let all who want to a government-sanctioned union with all the benefits inherent therein be required to have civil unions. Straight or gay, benefits are the same, no discrimination. It's the only sensible thing. Government should have NO say in who gets to benefit from committing to a loving, adult relationship.
It doesn't matter wether marriage is defined between a man and a woman. Laws/rules tend to change over time. Isn't that the point; to adapt? It's as if religion is playing a part as the main body that influences the law with the argument of the man and woman bond for marriage. I can't understand why some are so adamant to keep marriage exclusive to heterosexual people. Bit like greed isn't it.
I am supportive of anti-discrimination and all that, but why must marriage be redefined? Gays could be given all the exact same rights, and the religious would be far more tolerant. Let the religious groups keep their precious marriage, and the gays could get much farther.
As a Gay Man, I have to disagree about the word "marriage". People behave as if words have meanings which are set in stone. Read, listen, think about language: Haven't you experienced significant changes in how words are used during your lifetime? "Back in the day" has become an ubiquitous replacement for "long ago", "when I was a child", "in old days" etc. 30 years ago, pregnancy& cancer(not just sex, or homosexuality)were only discussed via euphemisms. Lives have changed. It's not disrespect.
Brillantly done! It really demonstrates how ridiculous the idea of a referendum is? Did they finally have to hold a referendum on the rights of the Catholic community in N.Ireland. The both are equally different.
homosexuality is not a "perversion". it commonly occurs in nature outside the human species. at that point it comes down to personal beliefs and you don't get to make law based on your opinion.
@gilanafaye It's unfortunate that many people cannot physically understand the plight of those "inflicted" with natural homosexual urges, such as myself. It's been seen in the animal kingdom time and time again..... do monkeys and rats make decisions based on sin or morality? No, they just do what feels natural. Just like every homosexual around, it's not a choice it just happens.
... I'm honestly not sure if you're being sly or serious. Cause those were classically accepted marriage practices, and still are in some parts of the world. They were certainly practices in ancient Israel.
Yes exactly. Similarly, that is also why we should not have changed the definition of human rights. People would eventually argue for more and more rights. We should never change any mode of thinking no matter how outdated or irrelevant they might be. All laws and legal rights should always be the same. In fact, we should just revert back to decades ago when women could not vote or even further back when you could stone adulterous couples to death.
I don't see why anyone should attempt to respond with respect to someone who views homosexuality as a perversion. But try anyway, people. You're not dealing with someone who cares about things like love and decency.
Posts like this make me ashamed to support gay marriage. It completely destroys the notion that my position is the tolerant one and my opponent's position is the intolerant one.
It doesn't really help that every comment for the opposing argument gets downrated so far it can't be viewed. We're censoring them too?
I guess it really goes to show; there are stupid, hateful people on both sides of every argument.
That's what's called the "slippery slope" argument. It's a logical fallacy.
Thirty years ago, it was illegal for blacks and whites to intermarry. The same argument was made then. It is ridiculous to assume that allowing two consenting adults to express their love and commitment in a legally binding contract would somehow make pedophilia acceptable.
Yes. Just, yes. If you disagree, fine. But how would you feel if YOU were denied the exact same right to spend your life with the one you love? This was great. Fave'd and stuff.
It took me about halfway through the video to realize what was going on. Plus, I'm not sure if Sinead is a male/female name, BUT OTHERWISE once I got what was going on, it was a brilliant ad.
This is such a great basic common sense video that the americans have decided to make an american version of it to use over there. Has won awards and all.
Yes, it's on YouTube, but I can't remember the American version name. It's something like 'Permission', but as with most things,it is not as good, and the original version (the Irish version) is better. Go n-éirí an mbóthair leat. Slán agus beannacht. I wonder if Sinéad said 'yes' herself????
On May 17, 2004 same-sex marriage became legal in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts making it the sixth jurisdiction in the world and the first in the United States to allow this basic human right. I am proud to live in Massachusetts and I can assure you that our world did not come to an end that day. All that did happen was 113 marriage applications were issued in Provincetown making the lives of 226 people a little more complete.
As your proud neighbor in Connecticut, we too are glad to have gay marriage legal, and the sky has not fallen yet. Though New England seems in stark contrast to the 30+ Constitutional Amendments barring it in the rest of the country, we have hope that one day all Americans will be able to pledge devotion to the one they love.
Until that day, I offer my hope and support to the rest of the gays, around the world, still struggling for basic rights, including the right to live. My love to you.
I am so happy to be living in the Netherlands (and be married). There are now 6 other countries who have followed - hope there will be many more soon. This video is great to that purpose. Kudos!

It doesn't really help that every comment for the opposing argument gets downrated so far it can't be viewed. We're censoring them too?
I guess it really goes to show; there are stupid, hateful people on both sides of every argument.
Withmyrice 2 years ago
Why should an argument against human rights be respected? Why should we compromise with bigots?
They are supporting intolerance and hatred - that is a message that deserves to be ridiculed.

Great post. I couldn't agree with you more. :)

Aw this made me misty eyed. This is a very good advertisement.
sleepylain 2 years ago 2
Yes. Just, yes. If you disagree, fine. But how would you feel if YOU were denied the exact same right to spend your life with the one you love? This was great. Fave'd and stuff.

What a sad thing to be so ignorant and sure of yourself to boot.

While I'm not a big fan of marriage, I strongly advocate the right for everyone to be able to make that choice themselves.
No matter who they're with.
Vonderdale 2 years ago 19
@bibchr If you are against gay marriage on biblical terms, you have to be against any divorce also.
kaosfury 2 years ago 4
I appreciate you making a good effort to respond substantively.
How do you figure that?

what a brilliant little video.
robman789 2 years ago 5
It took me about halfway through the video to realize what was going on. Plus, I'm not sure if Sinead is a male/female name, BUT OTHERWISE once I got what was going on, it was a brilliant ad.
l337Hawkins 2 years ago 3
Sinéad is female. It's purposely done from a straight point of view to point out how ridiculous it is to have to ask a population to get married.

This is such a great basic common sense video that the americans have decided to make an american version of it to use over there. Has won awards and all.
CelticTopCock 2 years ago 3
Is the American version on YouTube? I'd love to see it!
jjk717 2 years ago 2
Yes, it's on YouTube, but I can't remember the American version name. It's something like 'Permission', but as with most things,it is not as good, and the original version (the Irish version) is better. Go n-éirí an mbóthair leat. Slán agus beannacht. I wonder if Sinéad said 'yes' herself????

To force this to make any kind of sense, the young man would have to be asking each person if it's okay with them if he says that 2 + 2 = 5.
bibchr 2 years ago
huh?

How do you work one that out?

I wish No on 8 and other American groups could have shamelessly stolen this, it's a great commercial.
HuntrBlackLuna 2 years ago 8
The American version is called "Permission" on here, but I still think this one is more powerful. Both are beautiful, though.
TotzthePlaid 2 years ago 6
Amazing.
Hopefully it will do the trick.

On May 17, 2004 same-sex marriage became legal in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts making it the sixth jurisdiction in the world and the first in the United States to allow this basic human right. I am proud to live in Massachusetts and I can assure you that our world did not come to an end that day. All that did happen was 113 marriage applications were issued in Provincetown making the lives of 226 people a little more complete.
blueregardsrain 2 years ago 19
As your proud neighbor in Connecticut, we too are glad to have gay marriage legal, and the sky has not fallen yet. Though New England seems in stark contrast to the 30+ Constitutional Amendments barring it in the rest of the country, we have hope that one day all Americans will be able to pledge devotion to the one they love.
Until that day, I offer my hope and support to the rest of the gays, around the world, still struggling for basic rights, including the right to live. My love to you.

This is good...
Why can't people see that love is love, even if it does not look the same to each of us?

Do away with marriage. Let everything be a civil union the religious coneheads can't argue how it violates blah blah blah.
Just say no to marriage. Love isn't measured by the paper you recieve. Only your taxes are.
