@Niitroshark You obviously don't own a Volvo Cross Country. I do as well as the author of this video, and unfortunately in order to get the rear wheels to activate you DO have to throw near full power to it. Exactly as he said... if you were reading it. Now, I know as well as you do that in order to get traction in snow you DON'T spin the wheels. But with THAT car and those crappy tires, he'd never have come close to making it even as far as he did. So he HAS to spin them to activate 4x4.
@AFCAthebest100 Yes, that is the correct solution for this car under normal snow conditions. BUT, if you owned an XC you'd know that the AWD still won't kick in until you mash the gas. ...even WITH the "Winter" mode turned on... So still, all he would have done is sit at the bottom of the hill and spin the front tires in "W" mode. It doesn't look like he knows what he's doing but he's doing the right thing with THIS bad AWD system. He also has crappy tires.
It travelled better in reverse here than in forward motion maybe you should have tried reversing up the road, my old Saab 95 was better in reverse in thick snow all be it a FWD.
Main problem here are the tires......it's visiable that thay can't put all Volvo's power on the ground.... XC is a great car ...when you put realy good tires on it... not all famous and known tires are good....
A pity to call the fourwheeldrive of the XC70 "AWD", as its 80% front and 20% rear. A pure disappointment when you need to get up some hills with a few decimeters of fresh snow in the swedish lapplands...
As teesch say, Audi Quattro... Or a Touareg with diff lock :)
thats sad, not meanin to cause offense, i like european cars. any body know what a crew cab dually diesel truck would cost in europe just out of interest, my silverado was nearly 60,000 american what would it cost over ther?
iv drivin my 1993 volvo 740 turbo out of my driveway with 10'' of snow. i had studded tires, but still, its only RWD. its all the weight of the old volvos that made them good in the snow. the newwer volvos are still nice, but not built like tanks like the 240 and 740's were.
thats one of the reasons they are tanks i love the old ones. if they had a awd or 4wd part time the old ones would prob be better than most 4wd suv's in snow today.
Now, all Volvos have a Haldex system if they're AWD. So in general the Volvo is FWD (better fuel economy) until the front wheel slips. Then power is sent to the back. I prefer the Subaru system although I've never owned one. The thing is besides the interesting "Core technologies from Subaru", the Volvo is a better car overall. The comfort, build quality, design and safety all play a part in that. My only interest in subaru would be for the WRX STI and Outback. The latter I would like to buy.
The 1997-2004 V70XCs have a viscous coupling center differential with a final ratio set at 95:5 (biast to front) and are equiped with a limited slip differential for the rear wheels. The good thing about this set up is that the wheels with most traction always have power, which is the opposite to normal 4WD systems (those without TCS and diff locks).
why you guys hating on subarus so much? im sure the volvo just had bald tires or something. an outback with bald or summer tires wouldve done the same thing. and this is coming from a subaru owner. oh and the volvo's AWD system is nothing like subarus. except that they both have similar traction control
"Yes" AND "no" on the drive systems similarities. Manual trans Subarus use a viscous limited-slip mechanical center differential with 50/50% front-to-rear torque split. This is the one to have. Automatic non-WRX Subarus use a 90/10% initial torque split with a computer controlled wet-clutch pack that drives the rear wheels. The Volvo sytem is sort of the same in function to the auto Subaru. Both REQUIRE some front wheelspin, which is bad for really tough conditions. Still, it beats 2WD!
Quite possible! The viscous is the limited-slip feature OF the mechanical center diff on most manual trans AWD Subarus since the XT6 of 1987. An essentially identical functioning system was used for decades in AMC Jeep Quadra-Trac units. These were full time 4WD transfer cases that were on some Wagoneers/Cherokees/J-series pickups/Eagles in the '70s and '80s. GM used a similar setup in AWD Syclone/Typhoon/Astro/Safari/Bravada models.
in my mind, a mechanical diff' is something like a torsen diff, that uses cogs etc to relay power. viscous couplings use a silicon solvent that solidifies and forces disks to lock, and thus engage AWD. maybe our interpretations of 'mechanical' are different.
Here, here. I've easily gone through more challenging conditions than this with a 96 Subaru Legacy--through snowbanks up to its headlights and up slopes with snow deep enough to rub the floorpan. But it sounds like there was ice in the tire ruts in this case.
Sometimes the best way to get unstuck is just to floor it. We just went skiing and we got stuck in the snowy parking lot so we just floored it. The speedo said that we were going 50 km/h when we were just standing there because we were spinning the wheels but after that the car started moving and we got traction again.
I have a V70XC also and I don't really have to give full throttle to activate the AWD, once the front wheels are spinning the rear wheels get engaged anyway. Or doesn't it ? Anyway see my video on sand to see how all wheels spin.
are you trying to get stuck??? what is best to do if you want to get up a snowy slope, is to get as far back as possible, turn off the traction control, and gradually accelerate as much as you can without too much wheelspin. then when you get to the hill, slip it into a fairly high gear for your speed and floor it-this will give you the power, and because of the high gear, you wont get much wheel spin...(a gear that puts you in 2000/3000rpm is good).
her er det sjåføne som ikke kan.

the 4wd system isn't actually 4wd. the front wheels get 70% of the power there for the rear wheels only get 30%

surely true... that's why subaru seems better than volvo in some videos here...

You should have bought a Subaru instead.. the limitied slip differentials work like magic. Volvo XC does not (viscous or haldex, neither work) :)
