its thursday 3:24pm i just got home, my car battery broke down on me. no one would help. my head hurt so much from stress... thank you brian for this.
just watched the end of the superbowl. i can't help but dowse my head in pity for all of those poor suckers who don't even know how to sit and watch a game without blinky super expensive commercials. why is it this way? why aren't people fanatics about this music? why do we desire the things out of reach? this music puts me right back where I know I belong. Where my feet touch the ground and I'm conscience of it. I'd rather smell dirt than any sweaty money. If that made any sense, thanks
@WhopBobbaLuBop What part of my comment makes me stupid. I suffer from depression. I woke up feeling like shit, and this song calmed me down, in-turn brightening my mood. You replied with strong hate, so I asked you if you are mad.
i like that the very last 4 mins of the piece have no musical events at all.. just a shimmering synth contemplating the events of the previous 56 mins
Yes i listened to the 5 min version on my mp3 on a thursday afternoon when walking around the streets of my hometown. I felt sad that it didn't continue, the 5 mins and the slight snowing felt amazing.
The first time I heard this, it was a rainy summer's afternoon. I opened my windows, and I laid in bed, listening to the sound of the rain along with the harmonies of the piece while feeling the warm moist air flow through the air. It was the ultimate peace, a nirvana like state. To this day I am drawn back to that room whenever I hear the song, and listening to it now, I am longing for summer again. Wonderful piece.
Perfect music after a long week at school...I agree good music for school. I'm a big fan of eno, but I have honestly never heard this one, as crazy as that might sound to some of you. But very glad I stumbled upon this one. Making me wish I had a really good stereo system right now, but headphones will do
If it wasn't for Brian Eno I probably wouldn't be able to get my MBA. For two years I listened to nothing but Thursday Afternoon/Music For Airports/Neroli on an endless loop. Great music to relax the neurons in the brain and stimulate creative thinking. Life without Eno would be considerably poorer.
This is quite purrr-fect for taking a few moments to catch one's breath. Thank you for sharing this. Hmmm... I wish that there were more options for that odd "Your reaction?" thingy.
It was, after all, Brian Eno who coined the very term "ambient music" — so much abused these days — that it "... must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting." Rather like a body of water we can slip in and out of all day long.
To paraphrase one of the other grandfathers of all things ambient, "Slow Music for Fast Times."
I've been listening to this since hearing an excerpt on John Schaeffer's "New Sounds" program in the 80's. I enjoy how the piece evolves. Focus gradually changes and elements are added, then it resolves to the high pitch with all those distant calls. No other ambient piece is this interesting to me.
This piece, as well as Music for Airports, is partially responsible for getting me through grad school. I can't write a paper without having this on in the background.
@JerseyWater Eerily enough, I have had the same exact experience as you in grad school while pursuing my doctorate. I have listened to this piece and MFA maybe dozens of even hundreds of times over the years. I feel like I should give Brian Eno co-authorship on my articles and theses :)
@JerseyWater dude,i studied in The University Of Stirling(check out google images) and i always listened to this during essay writing time and it kept me calm and in the zone i totally get where you are coming from.
Turn the sound down for the filth advert at the start, inserted to corrupt the experience.
