no doubt 1:48 covers a pretty good riff., my favorite band of all time no question about it. if this band doesn't want you to get up and get moving you do not have a pulse. especially this song. I also think this studio version , on that day well however it came about is fantastic, most if not all of their music is excellent, but I think this is one of their greatest songs ever, yeah I guess I like the stones a little bit
@MegaJohncoffey at least this album never had pathetic songs like Worst Song Ever…Official BBC released poll voted Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da the worst song ever. That’s because it is. Although Octopuses’ Garden runs it close…and Hello, Goodbye isn’t exactly the work of genius either. albums from beatles are awful dont put the beatles before stones its a shame.
@MegaJohncoffey the beatles can fuck off , not same same band did'nt have the class likes of albums like EXILE, BEGGARS , LET IT BLEED, STICKY FINGERS, ITS ONLY ROCK N ROLL, SOME GIRLS, TATTOO YOU
A BIT HARSH THE BEATLES HAD A SOFTER AND BETTER HARMONY, THE STONES WERE MORE RAUNCHIER CATCHIER SOUND, THEY WERE TWO HEAVY WEIGHTS AT THE TIME, AND DONT FORGET THE KINKS AND THE WHO THEY WERE JUST AS GOOD, THE BEATLES ALBUMS WERE BETTER THAN THERE SINGLES
what about revolver, sgt pepper, the the white album, abbey road, let it be naked, rubber soul, hard day's night, help, beatles for sale, please please me, with the beatles, magical mystery tour the red and blue greatest hits albums, beatles post masters 1 and 2 album do i have to go on, the achieve alot in 8 years than anybody, dont get me wrong love the stones as well, my second favourite, follow by the kinks, the who great times.
@MegaJohncoffey WTF's your point??? I agreed with your earlier comment (about the respective merits of BOTH bands) and you respond by listing beatle's albums!
This is one of my favorite tracks from Exile On Main Street.Anyone who hasn't heard this album as well as Sticky Fingers don't know what they are missing.Of course once you become a Stone's fanatic you will want to check out all their great albums as well as the recently released 'bootlegs' The Brussels Affair and Hampton Coliseum (live 1981).Oh,and speaking of 'Tumbling Dice',Linda Ronstadt does a pretty decent version of this too.
Women think i'm tasty, but they're always tryin' to waste me And make me burn the candle right down, But baby, baby, i don't need no jewels in my crown.
This features Bobby Keys on sax and Jim Price on trumpet. They showed up in France to help with the album, and played with The Stones through the early '70s. Keith Richards and Bobby Keys were born on the same day: December 18, 1943.
The Stones recorded this in the basement of the Villa Nellcote, a place Keith Richards rented in France so the band could avoid paying taxes in England. They would sleep all day and record at night with whoever showed up. For this track, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards played guitar, and Mick Taylor, ordinarily lead guitarist, played bass.
Mick Jagger: "It started out with a great riff from Keith and ... a completed song called Good Time Woman. That take ... was quite fast and sounded great but I wasn't happy with the lyrics. Later, I got the title in my head, 'call me the tumbling dice' so I had the theme for it. I didn't know about dice playing but I knew lots of the jargon. I'd heard gamblers in casinos shouting it out. I asked my housekeeper if she played dice. She did and she told me these terms. That was the inspiration."
It's interesting, I read an interview in which Mick said he considered these some pretty bad lyrics. However, I really like them; I understand that the lines don't mean much individually but it comes together really well. Plus, considering how good it *sounds*, who freaking cares what he's saying?
I'm not going to thump up the top comment because I believe this should be everyone's favourite Stones song. I can play this on repeat for an hour no problem.
@bretoff few realize this, great call, I am so uninspired by the music my kids bring home, it's not their fault, but my oh my,it was and still is a pleasure listening to Keith, thanks for your insightful comment,i'm just a burnt out ol rocker but glad there are others who feel the same,..tumbling dice!
this is a red neck song through and through. back then, the stereotype of the redneck had not been explicated yet and was associated with "i don't give a damn" freedom.
@Jwo32 My Dusenhalf truck driving friend in the army in Germany with the 3rd Infantry said you get to hear the album the way you want and not the way the words came out or were written! That is the German form of Qualude!
Tumbling Dice and Beast of Burden are my favorite Stones songs.. Theres something about this song, the sound of it.. It embodies the spirit of the 1970's.
