That sort of cages are actually illegal in my country because they can harm the rabbits' feet. Also for a big-ish breed like American Chinchilla those cages are way too small. Your rabbits look afraid. Do they ever get to go outside an excersize? As a rabbit owner/breeder you should know how energic they are and that they need _alot_ of space to hop around.
I am letting this comment thru as an educational opportunity: 1st- these cages are the best ones on the market. They are the highest grade wire, guage, dipped after welding. No foot injuries in my barn! 2nd: 30 x 30 and 30 x 36 cages are hardly too small for a large rabbit such as an Am Chin. 3rd: these are working stock animals on a small scale farm. They are loved, treated with respect, and of course they get out of their cages. They are not free ranged nor are they pets.
@ster4465 Thanks! Check out my other video Rabbit Barn Update (Part 2)- it shows my latest updates to the rabbitry. It is a bit long but you will see the new white chute system and it really brightens up the place! :)
Great setup you have, I admire and applaud such effort into your rabbits, that you clearly love. I have a question for you, perhaps you could help me. I was just given a bunny last week, and it seems to be of the chinchilla breed, but I have no clue how old it is or if it is standard, american or giant. I "feel" it is 2 months old, and possibly standard, due to it's really small size. I have aptly named him Peanut. Could you help me with more info on standard chinchillas please? Thanks!
@tseekr379 Glad you like it! I am actually in the process of ripping out the cages and installing a new rugged white corrugated roofing material to make a chute system and to brighten up the barn. I have also downsized a few holes as well. I wrote a brief article about the history of the three chin breeds. You can see it at: w w w dot exclusivelyrabbits dot blogspot dot com. Always love to chat about rabbits and thx for the comments
@NewlyA Wow. Thank you so much. It is a slow week at work, so I just took the time to read that page through and throughout. Very informative, to say the least! You know, having a rabbit was more work than I thought originally, but it is a very beautiful and rewarding experience to have one at home. My only worry is the neutering issue, which almost EVERY website says is absolutely necessary. But after reading about your experience, I will decide to leave Peanut as is. Thanks, and God bless!
@tseekr379 If you search for "rabbit" or "rabbit care" usually the first several websites are ones that are actually various animal rights groups. Not to get into politics but yes- they are the ones who recommend spay/neuter. If you really want to discuss it feel free to contact me (info on the exclusivelyrabbits website). If your bun is going to be a house rabbit just make sure his cage has a urine guard. Rabbits are really no messier than a dog or a cat. They are work however!
@Rocky1765 Just the cages were about $30-$45 each depending on the size, but add another $10 or so each for shipping. I got my cages from Klubertanz and the accessories from Bass Rabbit equipment.
People: please watch the entire video. I provide sitting planks for all my rabbits! I change them to tiles in the Summer (to aid in keeping them cool). Please no remarks on giving them something to sit on if you don't even take the time to watch the entire video.
@chinbunny1 Thanks! I put a lot of thought into how I was going to set it up and what sized cages I would go with. Our barn was originally built for llamas and alpacas and it worked out well for rabbits too. All of those animals have issues with getting too hot, not the cold! We have lots of air circulation and that is what the air gap at the bottom does. As the heat rises out the top of the barn in the vents/windos, it draws up cool air so it acts like a natural A/C and provides fresh air!
@NewlyA thats good. Its really nice. Do you show your american chins, or just use them as meat rabbits? I raise standard chins for show and food. Americans chins are harder to find around here.
@chinbunny1 So far we raise for fun and food. I do plan on showing soon, maybe this Summer for the first time. I have 3 bucks and at least 2 does I'd like to show....
@NewlyA Make sure you bring something to do. They can be long, and boring. But, you make a lot of friends, and learn a lot about rabbits. ) hat would be great if you show your american chins, and even your standard chin. You might be the only one showing though. Not very many people have those breeds.
@Cfoster1999 Hahahaaha you are so funny. I ran down about 300 feet to get to my barn, plus chasing my little one in the background. Nice of you to take the time to make that comment.
WOW! That is by the far the best Rabbitry I have ever seen. Very nice and clean, shiny too lol. I was wondering if you could post a video of how you clip the rabbits nails? I got these four rabbits today and their nails are crazy long some of them even curl. The previous owners didn't do a good job at taking care of them, and I can not place them in my brand new wire cages we built becasue I am affraid their nails will get caught on the wire and give them pain. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the kind words! I put a lot of time in planning prior to building my rabbitry. I visited 6 rabbitries before I came up with my own design. I also check on my rabbits a minimum of twice a day which makes a big difference (IMO) and I am a bit of a neat freak. Since rabbits are captive animals, I think it is especially important to check on them frequently and keep their space very neat and clean since they don't have the option of going somewhere else. I love my bunnies!
99.9% of rabbits are just fine on wire. AND these cages are plenty big for the breed. AND they are nice and clean; the caretaker has them in a secure, clean, and bright facility; no "dark dungeon" here! Nice set up with good ventilation and lots of thought into planning. I'm jealous! :) **Rabbits that have trouble with wire have a genetic predisposition to what is called sore hocks; any that get that should not be bred to prevent having that problem**.
Thanks for the response. It won't let me post the link but if you google "misconceptions wire cages rabbits" you will get a great article from Shiny Satins Rabbitry that clears it up for you. If you re-watch the video, you can see that I do have sitting boards at 22 sec. in and specifically highlighted the boards at 41 sec. I rarely see my rabbits on their boards as they actually prefer the wire (I suppose since it is cooler to them). Wire cages are so much more preferable to other set ups.
@alexbobby63 She has boards in every cage! Wire does not hurt rabbits feet, breeders hurt rabbits feet by not properly taking care of them, She seems to be taking great care of her rabbits.
