  • Looks great, had problems installing but now its all good :)

  • thumbs up for using blender :) 2.60 is out, but you probably know that :D

  • @TheLifeLikePuppet i have it already man..lol

  • ok chaps, gnome is running and cool, will post video on it soon

  • Munches too much ram for my tastes.

  • Do not try to install proprietary drivers as it will mess things quite a bit. I use the open drive and everything's working pretty well.

  • When I activated the cube i n compiz, unity crashed and disappeared for good in 11.04.

Wil it still be gone if I upgrade? Maybe I shuld stick to 11.04 and classic.

  • @geir44 yes it will be gone as the old system gets erased and the 11.10 get installed

  • How did you get the Stroke around your text in your intro?

  • @MaestroBLC explain mate?

  • @sneekylinux The outline around the text in your intro

  • @MaestroBLC in openshot using blender mate

  • @sneekylinux I know, but where is the option to enable the stroke?

  • Been using 11.10 for about five weeks now, and even with the tremendous improvement in stability since Beta 2, Unity still keeps crashing on me. Adding simple Compiz effects like Magic Lamp, Wobbly Windows, etc, should not result in crashes. Desktop Recorder completely freezes up the desktop, every time. Nautilus randomly crashes. And yet my Gnome 3.2 session has worked flawlessly the last two weeks. It's a shame Unity is so flaky, having it and the Shell could be a selling point for Ubuntu.

  • unity looks nice but it is very buggy, i prefer gnome shell is much more stable

  • I love Unity2D

  • 11.10 is a great release of course much better than 11.04

  • I had the same problem with graphics. I was actually kinda digging on unity just a little. Installed my normal ati drivers from jockey. Completely crashed my system. Desktop useless. Would even bring up run command. Maybe they will have everything worked out by LTS.

  • Is good see you making a review of that good distro I love it and I love tour video(s) congratulations and continue making more :)

  • I have to say, the Gnome Shell, then do the updates from WEB UpD8 site for the 3.2 updates. Add the extensions for the Gnome Tweak. I'm getting some good likes inside for this now... Was getting discouraged during the beta stages.

  • Anyway, after several hours of trying to use it, I typed Gnome Shell in the software center like you do and it's so much better, what a relief!! I just love how empathy chats popup in the bar at the bottom of the screen in a bubble. The fonts are 1 point too big so you need to install the advanced settings app to drop them from 11 to 10.

  • Tried this myself, it's still a mess, some bits are nice but that entire left hand corner needs to be changed as does the menus in the top bar.. so many times I've clicked on something thinking it was the menu for that window or program and it wasn't.. As I designer/developer myself, this whole idea rings of somebody desperately trying to make that idea work, even the window buttons on the left backfires when you have a few windows open as you can't even see them.. maybe if I was left handed?

  • using xubuntu 11.10 couldnt love it more

  • i like the looks of this one

  • Brilliant video, Mate! I will be putting it on my Dell upon release. Hopefully the bug from 2 Ubuntu versions ago were ironed out.

  • Tried it yesterday. Installed fine but once I got to installing the graphics drivers it killed the desktop... :(

  • @SOF006 was that proprietary or open source driver?

  • @sneekylinux proprietary :(

  • @SOF006 try the open one as that the one i use on my xfce system

  • @sneekylinux I'll give it a shot tomorrow then! :) Going to bed now anyway, nighty night sneeky, cheers for the advice :D

  • @SOF006 Just out of interest, why are you trying to use the proprietary driver if it's working fine without it? In my experience, the proprietary driver may work fine for a while but after a while the machine just turns into a slug and you have to disable and re-enable the effects to get the speed back.. Only happens with proprietary drivers, mainly ATI ones.

  • the classic desktop isnt gone! sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

    spread the word!

  • @grandmasterhack If you never use unity, It will never improve.

  • @migan95 yes it will. just because one person doesnt use unity doesnt mean it won't improve :P some people just want their standard desktop back. thats how you get it.

  • @grandmasterhack Installing gnome-panel will add more memory usage, and you will still not able to change the Appearance and functionality like in gnome 2.

  • @necopost better than nothing. we all know its been ported to gnome3, well idk if you did. i dont see as much memory usage compared to unity.

  • @grandmasterhack You misunderstood me. I just pointed out a fact, that Installing gnome-panel doesn't revert to Ubuntu classic. It is still Unity running plus the gnome-panel functions on top of it.

Ergo, you have Gnome 3, Unity, and gnome-panel. All running at the same time. A better alternative would be Debian with Gnome 2, because it is stable. Beside, Ubuntu is based on Debian.

  • @necopost i do understand that lol.... im referring to the look of the classic desktop, sorry for not being clear...

  • @grandmasterhack I will admit one thing, Gnome 2 does not look the same on everyone desktop. And its functionality is so underrated. I just uploaded a video on Debian with Gnome 2 to point out the look and functionality must users don't really know about.

  • @necopost honestly the only gnome desktop i've ever had stable performance is on ubuntu. i've tried mint and a few other distros and their menus broke right after install! i havent tried debian (i do have a live cd ready though) but i dont think gnome is the desktop for me.

  • @grandmasterhack If you seen my desktop and you still think the same way, something is wrong with you lol

  • @necopost you can't say what works for you works for everyone or a lot more users would be using linux lol.

  • @grandmasterhack well, I haven't made such a claim. Beside, in Debian you have to install and setup everything yourself just like on a server. So, of course results would vary based on the user's skills and understanding of the OS.

  • @necopost How can he have Gnome 3 and Unity running at the same time? Just because they are installed doesn't mean they are running.

  • @fatriff Unity is running on top of some Gnome codes
