True. The whole idea for the original series, then the re - imagined series, was a story called " Adam's Ark / Adama's Ark ", which was more or less the Genesis of the BSG concept.

Either way, Adama had the cajones. Kirk couldn't handle an entire motley fleet of refugees, some of them rebellious & insubordinate.

What do you mean? Star Trek is about triumphant humanity spreading across the stars meeting aliens, integrating the good ones and kicking the devil out of the bad ones. BSG is about defeated humanity fleeing across space trying to hang on desperately to one last shred of hope after all hope should be gone.
