  • Use to lovvvvvve that song. I still do.

  • If they got that main hatch was closed they woulda made it the left side of the boat filled up of water and a wave hit her left side and it split in half... When my dad was in the coast guard he picked up the Edmund Fitzgerald on sonar

  • I'm a Michigander and I love this song.

  • I am from Michigan and this really shows Michigans history

  • Only problem is.... It's Michigan not Michigun. But the song is great!

  • Good typing!

  • Bummer...

  • I love this song. It is really cool, really cool.

  • the beer they named after this ship is darn good too!!! great lakes brewing co. Edmund Fitzgerald handcrafted Porter!!!!

  • still my favorite...

  • @EasyExpertVillage i agree

  • I did my heritage fair report on this ship in grade 6 last year....so sad.

Watch Discovery Channel tomorrow night a 8:00 PM if you want to find it.

  • its sad but most of her crew was from ohio, the captain was from toledo. fyi.....

  • Whitefish bay was so close. that storm must have been a bitch. RIP to the crew of the 'ol fitz

  • I first learn this song on guitar when it first came out, and to this day I still know it my heart :-)Gordon is Awesome !!!! LM

  • this is a sad sad songgggggggggggggggggggggg

  • Im 13. I LOVE this song. I instantly fell in love with this song when my grandfather showed it to me. I pray every night for all sailors out there in any kind of storms praying that this wont happen to more people. R.I.P to all the sailors on deck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

  • @monkey3631 im 13 too and its soo sad! but its still amazing. my dad showed me this. and its stuck with me ever since.

  • its a great song and not that it matters....but weighed is spelled wieghed and michigan is spelled michigun.

  • Like an old Sea Chanty sound. One of Gordon Lightfoot's best; it never gets old.

  • I grew up around the great lakes and this song represents to all the feeling of the massive inland oceans of the great lakes. The crisp cold mornings off the great lakes and nights of a billion stars shining down thru eternity. There is no other place In the world quite like this.

  • @es137macon what a lovely thing to write . i have never had the opportunity to see the great lakes ; they must be lovely ; to hear you describe them . and dangerous . i was born and raised in the san francisco bay area . anyone who lives near a huge body of water - be it the pacific ; like me ; or the great lakes ; has to have the utmost respect for nature . i love the san francisco bay ; and love the pacific ; but i look at their beauty with wariness . you ignore nature at your peril .

  • WHy do the words take so long to come on teh screen... How am I supposed to sing it??

  • Sad

  • This is sand. :/

  • The 45 people who gave this a thumbs down aren't making it into Heaven.

  • @codejunkie2468 This statement is biblically and theologically unsound. :)

  • in the words of tim hawkins, "And the people all died, bummer"

  • you spelt Michigan wrong..

  • @tanasaur You spelled "spelled" wrong.... :)

  • I am sure you meant this as a loving tribute to the lives lost, the song and the songwriter. Through the written use of the words, you have made it about the glaring misspellings and cockeyed grammar. Sorry.

  • The bell rings 30 times: once for each man who died on the Fitzgerald and one more for every life lost to the seas.

I beg you to recreat this and fix the spelling and glaring grammar errors. Should of is really should've (contraction of should and have). November is always capitalized and weigh is e before i as in eight. Please - out of respect for those who died do not make your tribute about your misspellings and misuse of words as I have read through the 2 years of comments here.

  • Bless all those who died with her and all those who have gone to watery graves around the world. I remember the day this happened. I was a young adult and had lived in the Detroit area most of my life, the area that made the mighty ship, an area surrounded by inland seas. I have traveled all over this magnificent state and seen all of these seas many times and 36 years later, cannot forget that day. The 36th anniversary was 2 days ago on 11/12/11. The bell is always rung 30 times.

  • @DarkWolfen

on November 10th, 1975 one of the newer and largest Great Lakes iron ore hauling ships, the Edmund Fitzgerald hit a freak storm on Lake Superior between the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Canada (near Whitefish Bay). Within minutes, the boat and everyone aboard was lost, sunk to the bottom of this immense and icy inland sea called Lake Superior (the Native American name is Gitchagoomie). It should not have sunk, especially so fast, but it did & 29 men were lost to an icy grave.

  • Ditto MsLogiam

  • This song gives me chills every time I hear it. A beautiful way to honor the lives of those lost on the Lake.

  • I first heard this song in '79 and my Grade 8 teacher told me the story behind the song after it ended. The song still gives me the chills every time I hear to this day.

May the 29 sailors on board be resting in peace.

  • You do these lost men a disservice by not doing a thorough spell check. All of us Michigander's remember this solemn day. It hits close to home for many of us.

  • In remembrance Nov. 10th 2011...~laurel, Southfield, Michigan

The #1 Life Boat is silently on display on the Valley Camp Ore Boat turned Museum in St. Ignace , Michigan........

  • I heard the song in school and loved it, and i'm 11. Surprise huh?

  • TOMORROW

  • I heard an American top 40 with Casey Cassum (sp) yesterday from '83. They featured this song, although it came out in '76 after the storm. The anniversary is this week. Great tribute to brave men. I've done that work, "the waves do turn the minutes to hours" Great song, may they rest in peace.

  • Im 28 yrs old and have been listening to this song for a solid 20 yrs. It still brings tears to my eyes when i listen to and hear this song! Haunting tale and amazing lyrics! A true classic!

  • @WTFxSAUCE That's kinda funny dude, same thing for me though I'm 27. Used to listen to my Dads Gordon Lightfoot record in the basement when I was 7 or 8 and play this song over and over again. Amazing ballad it truly is. God bless the 29.

  • @beerandagardenhoe

I don't think he did, but when I use that phrase, I mean that the criticism was so trivial to have been unworthy of notice.

  • There are some bad misspellings here. The word good is spelled goog and Michigan is spelled Michigun.

  • Besides the incredible number of bizarre spelling errors, there are actually a few minor (and at least one fairly major) error in the lyrics.

There are several sites with correct lyrics posted. Google "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald lyrics."

  • my grandpa knew the 30th man that was saposed to be on the shit, the mans wife had a bad feeling an didnt let him get on the ship with the other 29 men

  • Great song. Heard it in 4th grade back a few years ago

  • Its a beautiful song :)

  • i miss you grandpa you died doing your thing :/ <3

  • Comment removed

  • kitchagumy???is that in africa???

  • @killapoons No. It's correctly spelled Gitche Gumee. It's in Michigan. Actually, it's a lake really called, "Lake Superior." Gitche Gumee is a Native American word from the Chippewa. Sorry, if I had bored you with my lesson thingy.

  • @AnnaLilySnapeo3o its all good bro thx

  • @killapoons Welcome.

  • @AnnaLilySnapeo3o I like lesson thingies so thanks.

  • @WelakaWombat Welcome. xD And so do I.

  • Spell check must have been broken huh?

  • Haunting it actually takes you there!

  • when i was in 3rd grade i herd this song cause my teacher read the book to us

  • @doglover26824 ...Same...and then again in 5th grade. That's....odd but good to learn, and also interesting too? Don't you think that it is?

  • i always get major chills when i hear this song. bravo!

  • @infernalphast9 content needs to match style. Doom metal would be a terrible style for this song. Not all songs can be done in every style. Some only work in certain styles. This is one of them

  • @dinocubfan I'd say it could work. Maybe even folk metal.

  • isn't it Gitchigumee?

  • @PrestenSmash It's a Native American word. ANY spelling using the standard alphabet is an approximation at best.

  • Listening to this song gives me chills on about every verse. My grandpa used to play this all time whenever I was with him when I was around 7 or 8. I'm 17 now and have come to appreciate this song even more. I just wish more songs like this came out today! RIP the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald!

  • omg i grew up with this song <3333

  • great song...nuff said

  • every time i listen to it i get chills just thinking about how its real and not just a song. im proud to know that he came from my home town.

  • every time i listen to it i get chills just thinking about how its real and not just a song.

  • brings back memories of listening to this in 6th grade with my old friends.

  • I forgot to say that when I first heard this song at 14,the year was 1977.

  • I was 14 when I first heard this most haunting song.Gordon Lightfoot really sets tone of both the lives and the awful tragedy that followed. It's soooo timeless and yet so beauitfully told. Rest in Peace family and crew of the fritz.

  • Like if Deadpool Corps brought you here.

  • Grew up around Lake Erie, my grandfather would take me around Conneaut Harbor and told stories of the Great Lakes and the freighters, he mentioned EF many times. Haunting song.

"All that remains is the faces and the names of the wives and the sons and the daughters".

Thank you for posting the song.

  • Grew up on the banks of Lake Superior. It's an inland ocean & storms are scary on shore much less on the lake. The Fitzgerald is legend. Lightfoot was amazing in the way he told the story of this tragedy. What a wonderful way to keep the memory of the Fitzgerald & it's crew alive.

  • My grandfather made me play this song when I was 12. I was so selfish back then, I said it was so stupid, and now at 14 I cry whenever I hear this song, knowing that the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald can no longer dream. So lets dream for them.

  • R.I.P. Edmund Fitzgerald and her crew.

  • Timelessly haunting, rest in peace Crew of Edmund Fitzgerald, Crew of Andrea Gail.

  • 42 people dont care about those who died on this ship >.>

  • for the brave souls that lost there life on the lakes you are not forgotten you will be remembered god bless all who lost there life to the lake or the sea.

  • now i have to get in my bed and cry like a little girl.

  • i worked on a research vessel and seen some heavy seas around cape hatteras i can only imagine how they felt when they realized they were thru

  • Can anyone listen to this without crying?

  • @stepperliz no. T-T

  • @stepperliz no :-)

  • Great song, of course, and pardon my bluntness but what the hell is wrong with your spell-checker?

  • @MsLogjam I agree

  • @MsLogjam LOL..YOU ARE SO RIGHT

  • Love this song my dad is a big gordon lightfoot fan

  • I agreed! whoever does not like this song is a f...retard!

  • This is one of my dad's fave songs, mainly cuz of Michigan. The story of this song is in Michigan, isn't it?

  • @CaptainCretaceous91 Yes it is. Sank in American waters off Whitefish Bay in the Upper Peninsula with a crew from around Detroit where it was built.

  • love this song and have since i first heard it when i was 4 years old headed up to the old shipwreck museum at whitefish point Michigan

  • my little brother of 8 years old says: do you know how much i love that song.. its sad..

  • @ everyone below: First rule of the Internet: Never take anything on the Internet personally. The internet is the most impersonal, watered-down medium for communicating with other human beings ever developed; and it's not worth to get frustrated over. Sure, it's a cool medium and all; but human communication isn't human communication if it isn't face to face.

At any rate, lovely song. One of the first I heard from Gordon. It certainly prompted me to attain more of his material.

  • @stevieraystrong I thought the first rule of the internet was: You do not talk about /b/.

  • @pdawg193 only applies during raids.

  • heres the song in one verse:

the story of the ship that went down and the people all died.....bummer

  • This song sends shivers down my spine. It was so long ago but it seems the church bells rang in my hometown of Rodney Ontario Canada. This song should be a history lesson for all.

  • Just so you know its actually gitchagoomii

  • Man, sad song but not extremely depressing. Makes me appreciate life and the power of weather.

  • You need to do some serious spell checking.

  • went to the whitefish point shipwreck museum in michigan. really beautiful place to visit. they have the original bell from the edmund fitzgerald and replaced it with a replica enscribed with each of the 29 names of those who perished. really recommend it to anyone in the upper peninsula of michigian!!

  • When I was about 4 or 5, my dad would leave me in awe from the way he would play this song on his Gibson J-45, which was signed by Jimmy Page, but that's not real important. He played this song in his huge green recliner in the living room, and his sunburst Gibson J-45 looked more like a mandolin than a dreadnought guitar on his 6-foot-8-inch body. This song gives me wonderful memories of him lulling me to sleep with this song, and he always did 'til he went in for his fatal surgery. RIP Dad.

  • @JMM316 sorry to hear that, his spirit is with you in your heart.

  • I keep coming back to this song. I was 7 when it sank. A voilent storm on an inland lake, as rough as any sea. All 29 perished. How truly terrifying. Gordon has a great talent, and making th elines scan. A modern folk song. Poor souls

  • this song sends chills down my spine great great song

  • who said i am just out of high school and i listen to this song for years. so before people say kids don't know thing. go back to high school you will be surprise.

  • @001dragonwarrior Just graduated high school and have been listening to classic rock for like 5 years.

  • My parents loved this song. It reminds me of our little brown house on Village Drive.

  • I love this song so much and I am going into high school. My brother, who is going into middle school loves this song as well. It's a great song and very sad song, but it's still good. This song tells us that whatever happens, we will always remember the people who died in our hearts. As long as we don't forget about them.

  • If it isn't technopop and ya' can't dance to it, I guess some folks aren't gonna like it. Too many folks have ruined their musical palates with "junk food" pop to appreciate good tunes like this. If they don't like it, delete their comments and send 'em on back to Justin Bieber!

  • Every tragedy is a happy moment.

  • @LibTyrMatrix2011 why would you look up a song if you dont like it

  • Oh my god, I swear no song on youtube is safe from dislikes! You know, I think people just click that button just to be different. They all like the videos, at heart.

  • *knew

  • Glad they don't make crappy music like this anymore.

  • @LibTyrMatrix2011 If you lived anywhere near the Great Lakes and had any appreciation for their power and beauty, you would not find this song "crappy"

  • @caityq13 I say what the hell I want no matter where I live.

  • @LibTyrMatrix2011

If only they would stop making dickheads like you

  • @LibTyrMatrix2011 If you was emotionally attached to the tragedy you might not think it was crappy. Thats like saying a song about 9/11 is crappy.

  • @LibTyrMatrix2011 Wow man, whats with you, this is a terrific song

  • Great song.

  • just like the 29 miners in West Virginia RIP both crews

  • It's Gitche Gumee not Kitchagumy.

  • @Anonymous1226 There are spelling and lyrical errors all over this...

  • just named my new corncob pipe the edmund fitzgerald

  • @BabyCharmander

    - it was lake superior they are taking about :P

  • simply good.

part of the fabric of all of our heritage.

  • simply good.

  • Gord is the best. Nobody writes like him. Saw him in Toronto in May. His voice is gone, he can't play the guitar too good, but who cares. Like the writer in the Toronto paper wrote, it's almost pointless to review a Gordon Lightfoot concert. We all love him.

  • This song chills me right to my bones...

  • Some of the lyrics are wrong, but thanks for uploading anyway--I love this song. It's such a sad event...

I feel kind of bad for saying this but I also find it neat that a song was written about an event that happened in Michigan, since I'm a Michigander... But I wish it didn't have to be an event like this.

  • Gitchigumi

  • trippy tune

  • not heard this since it was released but the tune flits in and out of me ageing brain. so thanks for posting

  • @randomKcool That really cool you love the song at your age! If you ever do get the chance, go up to Duluth MN and look at the William A. Irvin. The ship is almost identical to the Edmund Fitzgerald. Inside of it on the tour in the cargo hole is information on the Edmund Fitzgerald. And they recovered the flags of it. Also, you can see a live photo of the Edmund Fitzgerald 530 ft. down. I think you'll like it a lot! :)

  • I love this and Titanic. They were both very very Tragic

  • Who the fuck would dislike this song, I guess 39 highschool kids who don't know if their arse was punched or bored..... my son included....

  • @kerrsridge I'm nine and this is a Great Song!!!! I love old songs like this!! My dad said he listened to this when he was in like High School or middle school

  • @kerrsridge My friend who is 39 or 40 can't stand this song.

  • @kerrsridge My friend who is 39 or 40 can't stand this song. Though he's not a fan of Lightfoot in general.

  • @kerrsridge Just wanna say that I'm fresh out of high school and I absolutely love this song and Gordon Lightfoot in general.

  • @kerrsridge Actually, Me some other friends preformed this song at the high school talent show a year ago.

Then again, we lost to some kid "dancing" to some autotune bullshit.

  • @kerrsridge Hello, kerrsridge

Not all highschool kids are like that, I'm a 15 year old boy, And I love this song. So why don't you grow up and stop being prejudice against teenagers.

    Sincerely, Highschooler

  • @nwmafia

lol...only a teenager would be offended by his statement

  • @TheKenTerry I honestly think I have more intelligence than you, Guess who's going to be running the future?, yes us teenagers. So when your old ass is in a wheel chair, we sure as hell are not going to have any respect for you, just as you do not have respect for us.

  • @nwmafia

I'm 21, hardly an old ass. You know why I don't respect you? Because you care about a youtube comment enough to challenge someone's character, which is the exact thing I expect a 15 year old to do. You have a lot to learn buddy. I'm young myself, but until you live on your own you don't know anything about life. Keep playing video games and living on social networks, you're being a real leader aren't you? See, I can generalize too.

  • @nwmafia How you gonna run anywhere in them skinny girls jeans the boys like to wear these days????? Wear real pants maybe someone might take you seriously........

  • @yersopunk I wear regular jeans, And I don't need you dumb ass to take me seriously.

  • @kerrsridge Not all of us highschool kids are like that, I love this song.

  • @kerrsridge make that 41.

  • @kerrsridge Hey, I'm only 21 and I love this song. I usually listen to Heavy Metal though :p

  • @kerrsridge When the

bell of Edmund Fitzgerald was recovered a few years ago it really put a real face on this tale when you actually saw the faces of the deceased sailors relatives , this song should be taught in history classes.

  • there not high school kids man ther fucking rappers man.... im 16 and love this song

  • @heil1hitler i was 11 and now im twelve

  • I was just in Duluth and saw the Edmund Fitzgerald monument inside the William A. Irvin. It's so sad! In honor of the twenty-nine souls that the ship took, I bought a snow globe of the ship. God bless those souls and all the families that had to suffer the loss. And remember November 10.

  • It has been theorized that the ship was swallowed up by a huge wave and plunged beneath the waves so fast that the crew had no idea what hit them. My heart goes out to the crew and their families.

  • I like the lyrics and the music as well. The story in this song is GREAT. Love songs with GREAT stories. So cool. Wow 2 football fields long. Amazing that they could make a ship that big. Thanks for posting this great video/song.

  • this ship was very important to the U.s because that how we moved on iron ore but the ship was never met to be sank Love Fitzgerald and they still have a memories which is the Edmund Fitzgerald's Bell and the Fitzgerald its still on the ocean right now sailing the ocean blue that boat will be missed. :( the ship was 2 foot ball fields we all love that ship and we all missed too "With a load of iron ore 26,000 tons more than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighted empty." and we all miss that ship :(:(

  • @AwesomeWhaleNinja

    are you typing in Engrish?

  • As a deckhand on a oil barge i have seen some pretty rough stuff but not as rough as this song is talking about I have lived in Michigan but every time I hear this song I think of all the times I could have lost my life because I was 19 years old then and now I have 2 children and couldn't possibly think what thy would go through if something like that was to happen to me I am 32 now and have a job on land but at least my kids see me every night ....I love this song and it makes me value my life
