Because it is a piece of art that can't analyzed. Eraserhead was supposed to be a moving that was abstract and disturbing just for the sake of being abstract and disturbing. The fact that it may evoke anxiety towards parenthood, ones future, ones job and relationships, of all matters of social awkwardness doesn't mean that its meant to be interpreted as a movie that warns against unreadied commitment or a cautionary tale against unplanned pregnancy. Its purpose is to be profoundly disturbing.
When it comes to David Lynch, I don't think 'getting it' really matters. The best way to approach a Lynch movie is to just sort of absorb the weird moviegoing experience of it all; set aside the magnifying glass for later.
To me, Eraserhead evokes emotions of fear and uncertainty about one's future. Jobs, relationships, family, all that. The chipmunk girl is like a safe haven, she is welcoming and non-judgmental, and we all want that sometimes when life gets tough.
That's just my interpretation. Now, I understand Lynch probably doesn't want to share his personal interpretation because that would inevitably become the "correct" one, but I am just really curious especially since he says no one else has come close!

I think part of the flaw in having a 'correct' interpretation is that words fail to adequately describe something better understood as knowledge-as-experience itself. Words like fear and anxiety only point towards the 'Horror' that can't be described via secondhand rehashing of experience called interpretation.
To me, Eraserhead has always been about the fear and anxiety of commitment, of marriage, the commitment of family, and of social and familial constructs subsuming your independent personhood. The fear of gestating towards an unknown result, the fear of becoming.
@Superabound2 I agree! Throughout the entire film, I felt such anxiety. When I tried to analyze my own uncomfortable feelings as I watched this, I realized they were coming from an old memory... I was once in a relationship with someone that I felt utterly trapped, smothered, and helpless to get out. This person wanted total committment and I didn't. I had feelings of derealization, things felt strange and out of place when I was with this person. Thank goodness I left. Good analysis, imho.

@SomethingReal1119 A lot of surrealism is meaningless, or at least so decontextualized as to be stripped of meaning, but i think the true geniuses like Lynch use their instinct, their unconscious inspiration to act almost as mediums for feelings and emotions and thoughts that cannot be precisely stated, that are better loosely held than coherently grasped. You can always find deeper meaning in Lynch's work, it always expresses things beyond discrete language or form.
Judging by Lynch's stream-of-consciousness production style, I doubt that even HE has any idea what his films are about before he finishes them. Most likely, his interpretations of them are obtained the same way his viewers' are: by watching the finished product.
well, he's right. i watched this movie from the special seats. we had them set up behind the screen in the Fargo Theatre, in 1990, in Fargo, North Dakota, and you paid twenty-five bucks to get there , which included a popcorn and a Coke, and a hit of Goony Bird acid. it was pretty singular, as i remember. it was 1 in the morning, and off the advertized screenings, as it must needs have been. Fargo was the shit, back then. 1 to 3, acid and popcorn and Eraserhead...yes, it was fine.

Based on what he said, I feel like even David Lynch doesn't feel his interpretation is the ULTIMATE explanation for this film. The reason he doesn't tell us is because it would take away from the mystery of this film. He wants us all to have our own personal perspectives on what it's about. If he were to tell us it's "true" meaning then we wouldn't care as much since we heard it from the director himself. He doesn't want his interpretation to be the main one out of everyone else's.

Because it is a piece of art that can't analyzed. Eraserhead was supposed to be a moving that was abstract and disturbing just for the sake of being abstract and disturbing. The fact that it may evoke anxiety towards parenthood, ones future, ones job and relationships, of all matters of social awkwardness doesn't mean that its meant to be interpreted as a movie that warns against unreadied commitment or a cautionary tale against unplanned pregnancy. To me, Eraserhead evokes emotions of fear and uncertainty about one's future. Jobs, relationships, family, all that. The chipmunk girl is like a safe haven, she is welcoming and non-judgmental, and we all want that sometimes when life gets tough.
That's just my interpretation. Now, I understand Lynch probably doesn't want to share his personal interpretation because that would inevitably become the "correct" one, but I am just really curious especially since he says no one else has come close!

I was once in a relationship with someone that I felt utterly trapped, smothered, and helpless to get out. This person wanted total committment and I didn't. You can always find deeper meaning in Lynch's work, it always expresses things beyond discrete language or form.
