They work by heating the pad that is wiped over the items to various temps and if there is anything on the swab, drugs, etc, they all react differently at different temperatures and these machines are calibrated to the different substances, The new ones being used on this episode do look a little toy like, but if you search through the older episodes shown you will notice the older model which shows levels detected
