You know, I find it ironic that they intentionally put the SD50 in front of the steamer to lessen the amount of foamers chasing etc., yet the wondrous R&N steam crew still feels necessary to blow the whistle and work the engine? This is leaving out the fact that train has plenty of diesel motive power to negate any need for the steamer to do anything except make steam. Seems a bit pointless to me and a total waste of water/coal and wear and tear on the steam locomotive itself.
JF......the diesel is put in front in case there is a grade crossing accident .......which is unlikely but better saye then sorry. As to working the steam engine......why not. The couple minutes it has worked on ferry moves is really irrelevant with coal and water usage. It ahs nothing to do with chasers. We enjoy people chasing us.....gives us an opportunity to watch videos like these.
Excellent video!! It baffles me that they wont put an SD-40-2 or an SD-38 on the excursions. Is there a reason for that?

I don't know who. It was rather poorly run, people didn't know what they were really getting into. Oh well.

It's a perfect example of tax payer dollars spent on a project that even the leaders of the project didn't even know.

I absolutely love the shot at 0:17. Hard working steam, EMD's, Leslie 5 chime and steam whistle all in one shot. That's awesome!

The SD40-2 was along for the ride to Pittston, and was in idle most of the trip.
