  • Hi dont panic this is not spam ,I am a school kid & as such the topics you raise are always bieng debated at school .Most of us are migrants too, or the kids of migrants. It should be a bit less depressing though Dick we need positive alternatives as well as the cold facts.Have a look at the work of ,Jerry Brunetti,Hugh Lovel, Dan Skow Dr Phillip Callahan,Graeme Sait ,Joel Salatin. You would fit right in here Dick with your great foods & visionary ideas

  • You are right on the money once again Dick , when oh when will they take notice ! Keep up the fight on our behalf , we & the useless polititions in this country wont get it until its too late, then we will band together & blame the farmers or some poor smuck..Keep belting out the common sense & dont give up whatever the ignorant plebs throw at you .Good on you mate!!!!

  • Over 100 years ago people like Dick Smith were fear mongering about the world not being able to support more people. 5 billion people later.....The world and Australia especially, is far from being overpopulated.

  • population crisis? please. advances in technology will easily allow the planet to support double/triple what our current population is. Even a nation like Australia, lacking in water, will easily support 35 million. Has the ghost of Thomas Robert Malthus come back to haunt us? I hope not..

  • Great work Dick Smith for finally raising this issue which always seems taboo - no doubt because whoever does will be labelled racist or inhuman. Dick Smith's population crisis should be essential reading, endorses a policy to actually increase refugees to australia, opposite of racism I would have thought and what is inhuman about protecting a standard of living especially of future generations. Dick for PM.

  • However, Id like to point out, that 50% of what we do is influenced by consensus. Having lived through one recession, I realised that even the act of saving is no different. Suddenly, its ok to live cheaply cos everybodys doing it.

Even if everything falls apart, most people can still find their own kind of happiness.

There will be period of chaos and peace will be hard to find. If you are strong and you stick around long enough, youll end up on the better side of the table.

    Thus, be strong.

  • Its the nature of human being and its relationship with their perceived happiness - growth. People want excitement, no just borderline blissfulness - more. Theres not much you can do. Its how we were created. You can pull a break on yourself, but not the rest of the world.

Grow and save. Thats what we Australian should do (Save as much uranium as you can, too.)

The present Dick is a communist. Its ok for his family cos hes already rich.

  • "I WANT *YOU* AS OUR NEXT PRIME MINISTER" GO FOR IT MR SMITH...U R THE BEST!!!

  • @NASAvsPETE Solutions are much better than all the prophecies of doom, but it's also not helpful to pretend that there aren't any problems. Fresh water is only one of Australia's problems. Very poor topsoil that doesn't get naturally renewed is another big one and so is soil salinity.

I very much disagree with Dick's (if not racist then definitely xenophobic) solutions. I'm also against draconian measures like China's one child policy. Education and empowerment of women is the answer

  • @NASAvsPETE You brought up the point that Aus is nearly as big as the USA but only has a fraction of their population.

My point: Australia might be the same size as the US, but it can't support even close to the same number of people. The environment and climate is simply not suited for that.

Whether Aus can even support it's current population in the long run is doubtful. Again, read Jared Diamond's Collapse.

  • @NASAvsPETE You are ignoring the environmental limitations of Aus v the USA. Read Jared Diamond's Collapse.

Australia is already the the highest user of natural resources per capita and it's now also a net importer of food.

  • There are some good videos for extra info on this issue on here:

    1) "Overconsumpulation-Overpopulation is Not a myth"

and 2) the BBC's"how many people can live on Planet Earth?" .

  • comparing with Asian morden cities, Australia is more like countryside which is lack on its public transports but with beautiful environment. it is controversial. 22million Oz residents, thats just 1/57.7 of whole population in China, if it is a problem for Australia, that must be like a hell in China!!!!! build up your own underground subway systems!!!

    conclusion:

Growing up in happiness, one often fails to appreciate what happiness really means. thats a sorrow of the first world.

  • Our politicains and business people use increased population for profits!!!!!!!!!!

Dick Smith is right ! They never ask what we want for our childern and future generations. There is a level of population that will give all Australians an enriched life. Any more, will result in reached quality life and the less wealth.

  • @Selley05 it's not worth getting overly concerned about; exploitation of workers / cheap labour has gone on for millennia. we need to develop the northern food bowl, and scientists need to discover new habitable planets out there in the cosmos for humanity's habitation.

  • If based on pop.density, australia is far from being overpopulated (as for comparision with Netherlands). Yet, that is not the only factor in measuring overpopulation, as there needs to be enough food and resources, and economic development. The main problem in australia is that the most part of the country is too dry to live in. But why not make use of the land area for prod. clean renewable energy from concentr. solar power, at least that is a sustainable source of energy.

  • The population growth problem is a worldwide problem, not just australian. I think in the developed industrialized countries we have the direct opposite problem, a growing eldery population. Population growth is to be associated with countries in development that are economically poor and have cultural traditions that cause high birth rates. In both fields work needs to be done. Otherwise the world will be overpulated with mainly poor people, and too little resources to feed them.

  • Too crowded? The population of the entire continent is than that of Mexico City.

  • @behaack

Dumbasses like you can’t accept reality and start dealing with it and start shoving corks in all these god damn fucking baby dropping pussies.

  • yes yes yes dick smith for pm, yes he can be slightly hayseed but he had the balls to stick his neck out, pity only 366 other people give a hoot on youtube

i suppose its just easier to go gaming or watch some porn eh ?

why are we so appathetic here? Mr smith if you read this please run for pm,i will vote and seems like at least a few others here will as well.john elliott, you need a boof in your big nose

  • Great WAKE UP call, is anyone listening??

  • We are lagging behind with utilities, hospitals, essential services, and it's getting worse, I live in middle suburbia Perth, I used to be in Sydney, even worse.

How are more people going to fix that, it hasn't done it before, nor will it, so tell me another one.

Can Australia's population keep on going, and going, and going... and going.

What sort of "business" are you into?

    Probably not eco/sustainable

BTW I have spent a good many years in the Navy, I'm not a fringe kook, but concerned

  • Thank you for opening our eyes to the importance of having a plan.

  • I watched this last night and found error after error in Dick Smith's assertions. I'll be writing an open letter to Dick requesting a debate on this. I'll also be posting an official response to this film.

  • @cabgt I'ts been said if all we eat wear drive etc is either mined or farmed, are they not finite? Yes they are no matter the spin.

Therefore they should be used efficiently, but sooner or later they will run out.

And as for needing people to fund other peoples retirement, that's not going to work much longer.

We need alternatives, but pollies and business just don't get it.

  • @KG84C and in India with a population of 1,139,964,932 people that might be a reasonable argument, but in Australia with a population of 21,431,800 that's just absurd.

  • @quantumG Sorry for my ignorance, we should be heading towards India's standard of living.

  • @KG84C I think you're trying to imply that population growth in Australia will cause our standard of living to drop to be comparable with India's standard of living? Is that right? If so I think you just stupided yourself out of the conversation. Grow up please.

  • @KG84C The free market comes up with alternatives and is far better/more efficient than any central planning authority, ie government, at providing "alternatives." History and economic theory proves this to be the case. It is due to a lack of free markets that sustainability becomes an issue. Humans intellectual and creative capacity is not finite, thus we continue to create new technologies solving problems. One day we will be exploring other planets. After all, the sun is going to burn-out!

  • Dick Smith is on the ball as always. Should start up a political party, DS for PM, we need a real thinker for PM not the puppets we have now.

  • @adamkow3166 Though he didn't start it, Dick has helped and said nice things about the Stable Population Party (Senate Group T) who are running this year.

  • @videowilliams thanks for the info

  • Not just a timely, important message, but a great piece of filmmaking too. Let's hope it woke a lot of people up tonight!
