How many think the outcome could have been different if Kevin Rosier had his first fight against Gerard Gordeau ? Kevin came out so strong in the first fight and took everything his opponent hit him with , yet against Gerard he was totally destroyed . Was in really because his defense is down or he was worn down from the first fight .
@double42 I think Gordeau legitimately had more skill than Rosier. Rosier was a decorated kickboxing champion, but he did not fight in venues that had much talent (From what I've seen of him, at least).
@double42 I agree on that one . I saw his K-1 record and was mostly against low level competition . He competed as a regular boxer and his record was awful , and saw him in a fight against a very low level competitor in a boxing match and he was completely dominated . I'm surprised he won against Frazier who was a 4 time Karate Champion and had a 17-2 record as a kick boxer .
@VCthaGOATdunker Rosier actually says he tried to stomp Frazier pro-wrestling style, meaning he mostly just pushed his head with is foot instead of really crushing him. Gordeau holds nothing back, though.
@Rnt911 And to think Royce got mad after the fight when Gerard bit him . He said to Gerard I tried to fight you like a man and bullshit , fighting like a man is on your feet , not going to the mat because it's the only way to win for the grapplers back then and even now .
the dutch guiy should have won this, to bad that man lover gracie won fuk i hate the gracie BJJ shit it destroyed what mma could have been. imagine how many people would be into mma if they never let those boy lovers fight, i mean who wants to see 2 dudes borderline lubing each other up, to bad they couldnt hire any world class kickboxers for any of the ufc`s
Rosier actually had some serious kickboxing credentials and was probably the most well-known martial artist out of all the fighters going into UFC 1. It's a shame that he has to be judged by this performance, being that he came out of retirement just to compete in the first UFC.
Even though he wouldn't have a chance in this fight, even if he was 5 years younger (At the time of this fight Gerard was actually 3 years older than Rosier). Gerard used his amazing technique, watch how he doesn't KO him at first but waits till Rosier's defence is totally down and then stomping him in the guts with a heel. Rosier reminded me more of a New Yorker with streetfighting skills than a pro MMA fighter at that event.
Rosie it too fat! The elbow to the head and the stomp... ha ha ha. I think he got him in the spleen there and not the ribs. Anyway it was not a fight. Fatso should stay at home and keep eating his pork chops.
To be fair, Gerard Gordeau won the first ever UFC fight after kicking Teila Tuli in the face and knocked his teeth out. Even Ken Shamrock himself said that he was scared as soon as it happened, so I'm sure that would have had an effect on him! Lol
''Gordeau did Savate all his life''? Gordeau was and is a Kyokushinkai stylist..and always will be. He DID enter savate, kickboxing,Muay Thai and MMA but he is first and foremost Kyokushin.
In Holland we have never really had savate schools..back in the days it was just Kickboxers entering savate events for the hell of it.
gerard gordeau has his own IBK kyokushin organisation now.sure he was succesful in savate i guess, but he's more famous for his kyokushin karate background and i think also for poking eyes some time ago with a japanese fighter.not fair at all, but still i think he's a good fighter
who ever says gerard wouldnt stand up to todays ufc guys is full of shit gerard did savate his whole life and was very successful in savate competition if he had a good ground game he would be one of the best today
These guys wouldn't last seconds in today's UFC. Rosier looks like a giant comic book nerd whose brother is Stephen King. He cowers like a little bitch in the corner.
Gordeau was good, but in terms of technique and credentials there have been much better strikers in MMA. Maurice Smith is a good example, and he only came in a few years later.
@Theyellowma gerard gordeau is simply the most hardcore fucking man i ever met in my life i aspire to be like him one day (yes i trained under him) he was already pretty old there and even now hes in awesome shape.
Yea, which has what to do with his stand-up? BJJ was unknown to most of the world at this point. I never said he was the total package, just that he had great stand-up skills.
Gordeau used to be one of my favorites... Until the match where he permanently blinded the Japanese guy (and it wasn''t in UFC, eye gouges were specifically banned). Fuck him.
That was in Vale Tudo Japan 95..Yuki Nakai, illegally eye-gouged went on to win the fight and meet Rickson Gracie in the final where he lost. he kept his blindness a secret for some time to protect MMA.
Fighting record doesn't really mean much. You can beat 100 cans, 0 loses and that still doesn't equal to fighting 5 great fighters, losing twice. Gerard Gordeau was doing textbook kickboxing, and simple leg kicks put Kevin Rosier away. This doesn't mean Savate is better than Muay Thai as this wasn't the even the least best display of Muay Thai. Both arts are highly respected however.
@sampaio Back in the day. Anything with kicks was called 'karate.' Before that, anything with an open hand blow was called "Judo." Just like these days if there is grappling at all people call it 'MMA.' They are just following the wording of their generation. Chuck Norris originally called his style 'karate' when he knew it was not karate. One of them is Bill Superfoot Wallace. I guarantee you, he is not an idiot or a novice in martial arts at that time. Look him up.
@trounds2 I was about to say the same thing. Superfoot is a legend in kickboxing and full contact karate. The black guy was a pro boxer as well. I am unsure who the woman is, but the other two are legit. They definitely know a bit about fighting. We do have to remember that MMA was a completely new sport for almost everyone. We had never seen these different style against each other.
I really think kevin rosier lied when he said he was a kickboxing champ. He never gets into the kickboxing stance. Never has his arms up and never threw a kick to the head or legs. I think they just took the fighters word back then.
Naw. If you look online you can verify that he was a champ. He fought in a bunch of different leagues that disbanded really fast but he had a good record. It's just that at that point he entered the UFC, he was retired for several years and was WAY overweight. I saw a picture of him back from his fighting days; dude used to be jacked.
The WKA never disabanded. They are still around. Chuck Liddell and Muarice Smith was champion in that league as well. It is one of the top Kickboxing orgs in North America. Overall you are rigt about his kickboxing record. He had 66 wins with 66 knock outs and 8 losses.
I never said the WKA, although I suppose he did fight for that promotion. But according to Clyde Gentry's book about NHB, Rosier also fought in a lot of smaller shows and won their belts only for them to disband the next week. It must suck if you're a fighter who's trying to make it and all the belts you earn end up being worthless.
UFC was better for entertainment back then, the idea of 2 guys that are totally different weights fighting is quality, also the rules were alot meaner too.
Can anyone tell me how to watch all the old UFC's like 1-5 without buying them???
It was a different era and something completely different to what is now the UFC, fans and commentators now have a vast knowledge of the styles but back then it was different.
As far as the selection process, the current UFC is completely different from this one. The raw fighting is its original purpose. For people to test their training or natural abilities.
The modern UFC is not a real martial arts fight at all its just a mere sport now.
The original founder of UFC sold it a LONG time ago, it went from a traditional competition of fighting skill to just a sport that guys can use the rules to win.
This is the real deal. No rounds, no gloves, only basic basic rules. The only real win comes from KO, Submission, and occasional blood loss in the earlier challanges
Gerard's a fucking dirty piece of shit who can't even abide by the very bare minimum rules of vale tudo. He blinded one of his opponents (not in UFC) because he eye-gouged. Seriously, I hope someone knocks this son of a bitch out during a competition and gives him permanent brain damage -- even if they do it illegally. What an asshole.
By the way, it's funny how newbish some of these fighters look. Honestly, I think I could have taken either of these two on (with a little extra training of course). The fat guy didn't even know how to defend himself.
This was years ago, in UFC 1. No one really knew what they were doing, this was before MMA. They were all used to fighting against their own styles. With a little extra training (in the right stuff) they would have taken you, easily. It's just they didn't have that, or know what would be best to train in.
I suppose and you're completely right in that respect but some of these guys don't even look like experts in their field(s). I don't know what UFC's screening process for the fighters was back then but it didn't seem to selective in some cases. I mean, look at that boxer who actually fought with a glove -- A glove, one on one hand. And plus, why did they pick out some guys that are so out of shape? Get what I'm saying?
Probably because it was so new, and so violent - a boxer in his prime making good money winning isn't going to risk it for a small, unheard of competition where he could get fucked up permanently. Once it got bigger it had more draw, so better fighters came in. Plus, the few rules they have now lower the risk of real damage - no broken hands or spines, no groin damage, no face damage from heavy kicks when you're on the ground. Before they took what they could get, now they pick out the best.
Well, boxers were really the only fighters that made any money in their field, let alone good money. I'm talking about the guy who looks like he's spent a little too much time on the couch and has had a few too many beers, and others like him.
I don't think the rules could really be considered "few". There are what, 30 of them now? That's a lot. If MMA is supposed to simulate as close to a street fight as you can get and is supposed to have as few rules as possible, then why are they trying to make it so the fighters don't get hurt? If you get your your face busted that's your own damn fault. As for a broken spine, I agree that protecting against that is fine. The gloves thing is alright too I guess. Still, too many rules
The first ufcs were setup to promote gracie ju jitsu. The screening process was more about making the fights easier for royce than finding the best fighters. Thy specifically screened out anyone who had knowledge of BJJ. This is why royce did not compete after the first few.
Of course they screened people who knew any BJJ. The point was style vs. style. It defeats the whole point if you have one guy who knows the other guy's style to fight each other.
I recall a number of champs or former champions or guys with admirable credentials in their respective styles. They obviously didn't look for bums....
Not really. First of all, BJJ wasn't exactly that common back in the day. What the hell is he going to do, fight one of his brothers or a student? Second, Art Davie did most of the fight recruiting, not Rorion Gracie. Third, there were actually quite a few grapplers in the early tournaments.
This is VERY true. As you can easily look up on wikipedia or any where else ground fighting wasn't really all that acceptable and "real" fighting you have to stand.
Well that obviously doesn't work. However, neither does PURE grappling you need both to be a truly successful fighter, or in UFC sportsman.
How about you take me out first and tape it? Shut the fuck up, you shit-talking little pussy. Gerard's a rule-breaking piece of shit. A guy's blind in one eye because of his deliberate disregard for the rules.
I would really like to take you out. Shame that its not going to happen because of the distance between us. Whatever.. you would never as you said take on Gerard Gordeau or Kevin Rosier. Never.deal with it
How does this have ANYTHING to do with the fact that Gerard's a fucking dirty son of a bitch who eye gouges and bits when he's losing while everyone else plays by the rules? You're a fucking idiot. Is this guy your boyfriend or something?
@mymyharlow why? It's too diferent nowadays?

The UFC was so Hood back then..lol..this shit is wild..I haven't seen these in years..

The only real win comes from KO, Submission, and occasional blood loss in the earlier challanges
bloodlinedestroyed 4 years ago
Gerard's a fucking dirty piece of shit who can't even abide by the very bare minimum rules of vale tudo. He blinded one of his opponents (not in UFC) because he eye-gouged. Seriously, I hope someone knocks this son of a bitch out during a competition and gives him permanent brain damage -- even if they do it illegally. What an asshole.
kommisar 4 years ago
By the way, it's funny how newbish some of these fighters look. Honestly, I think I could have taken either of these two on (with a little extra training of course). The fat guy didn't even know how to defend himself.
kommisar 4 years ago
This was years ago, in UFC 1. No one really knew what they were doing, this was before MMA. They were all used to fighting against their own styles. With a little extra training (in the right stuff) they would have taken you, easily. It's just they didn't have that, or know what would be best to train in.
vitr1ol 4 years ago
I suppose and you're completely right in that respect but some of these guys don't even look like experts in their field(s). I don't know what UFC's screening process for the fighters was back then but it didn't seem to selective in some cases. I mean, look at that boxer who actually fought with a glove -- A glove, one on one hand. And plus, why did they pick out some guys that are so out of shape? Get what I'm saying?
kommisar 4 years ago
Probably because it was so new, and so violent - a boxer in his prime making good money winning isn't going to risk it for a small, unheard of competition where he could get fucked up permanently. Once it got bigger it had more draw, so better fighters came in. Plus, the few rules they have now lower the risk of real damage - no broken hands or spines, no groin damage, no face damage from heavy kicks when you're on the ground. Before they took what they could get, now they pick out the best.
vitr1ol 4 years ago
Well, boxers were really the only fighters that made any money in their field, let alone good money. I'm talking about the guy who looks like he's spent a little too much time on the couch and has had a few too many beers, and others like him.
kommisar 4 years ago

This is why royce did not compete after the first few.
aldridge1 2 years ago
Of course they screened people who knew any BJJ. The point was style vs. style. It defeats the whole point if you have one guy who knows the other guy's style to fight each other.
I recall a number of champs or former champions or guys with admirable credentials in their respective styles. They obviously didn't look for bums....
kommisar 2 years ago
Not really. First of all, BJJ wasn't exactly that common back in the day. What the hell is he going to do, fight one of his brothers or a student? Second, Art Davie did most of the fight recruiting, not Rorion Gracie. Third, there were actually quite a few grapplers in the early tournaments.
Theyellowma 2 years ago
This is VERY true. As you can easily look up on wikipedia or any where else ground fighting wasn't really all that acceptable and "real" fighting you have to stand.
Well that obviously doesn't work. However, neither does PURE grappling you need both to be a truly successful fighter, or in UFC sportsman.

you fool.. go and take out gerard gordeau man . and tape it so we can se how tuff you are :-)
prinzeugen 4 years ago
How about you take me out first and tape it? Shut the fuck up, you shit-talking little pussy. Gerard's a rule-breaking piece of shit. A guy's blind in one eye because of his deliberate disregard for the rules.
kommisar 4 years ago
I would really like to take you out. Shame that its not going to happen because of the distance between us. Whatever.. you would never as you said take on Gerard Gordeau or Kevin Rosier. Never.deal with it
prinzeugen 4 years ago
How does this have ANYTHING to do with the fact that Gerard's a fucking dirty son of a bitch who eye gouges and bits when he's losing while everyone else plays by the rules? You're a fucking idiot. Is this guy your boyfriend or something?

Gerard Gordeua is a Kyokushin Karatea and also a Savate champion. He coached Ernesto Hoost in K-1
Shibuki 5 years ago
he is a cheap fighter who eye gouged Yuki Nakai, resulting in him being blind in that eye.

Gerard Gordeau is one of the greatest kyokushin fighters of the world! A true martial arts man.

so do kyokushin fighters train to break the rules?
anvar 4 years ago
No u freaking idiot... early ufc fights had no rules!!! God, kyokushin is the best!
RiCansFynESt 4 years ago
Actually, there eye-gouging, biting, and small joint manipulation were illegal in early UFC, "u freaking idiot."
itzSommyJr 4 years ago
only gouging war illegal in the first one fuck face
MikeRoscope 4 years ago
First of all, that's simply wrong. I trust you can look it up yourself. Gerard Gordeau did bite Royce on the ear, but the referee had missed it.
Secondly, it doesn't really matter -- the point was that there were rules.
Thirdly, let me add creedence to my point by puntuating it with "fuck face," fuck face.
itzSommyJr 4 years ago 2
lol, that doesn't make him a cheap fighter, it makes him a dirty fighter.
