yes, great chops, great playing, great sound and technique, but this is a Blues, I would prefer less notes, more feel & emotion and less drills and planned patterns.
@gjgmusic Yeh but you can go and see thousands of guitarists do that every weekend. None of them can do what he's doing - if you've got it, flaunt it, I say.
@Vwisehoon One of the problems of online communication is that many people don't seem to understand basic English. What I said it that playing very fast does not necessarily mean that he has great feeling and artistic talent; there are plenty of shredders out there. If English is not your mother tongue then this comment does not apply to you.
@turockandar No, I responded because you didn't answer my question. I said "How come he isn't as famous as buckethead?" because both his technical skill and the emotion in his playing is superb. You told me that those are two different things. I already know that.
@LunarLionheart he always has the funkiest faces man. check him out in "along the tracks" the face he does when he first starts playing reminds me of a mischievous cartoon devil ;)
Very few people can play this fast and make it sound so musical, or fit it into a blues progression without it turning into a mess. This is really amazing stuff, beautiful tone and stunning fretboard knowledge.
Good improvising should involve the audience. I feel quite sure that nobody watching this would be able to sing or whistle virtually any of it. So therefore speed = Brilliant guitarist, so therefore = Jimi Hendrix? you're shit because you couldn't play as fast as Guthrie Govan. Oh Dave Gilmour? You're not even worth mentioning—you're solo in Comfortably numb is so slow maaaaan....
When you play the guitar, think of the saxophone—A saxophonist needs to take rests to get his/her breath before playing another phrase. These rests help to 'frame' the phrases. This just sounds like somebody has eaten a dodgy curry and then had a massive attack of diarrhea all over the place='Oh I'm Guthrie Govan and I'm the fastest guitarist in the whole world...' - So fucking what...
This is not good improvising. A good improviser would leave a few rests, play a melody that everybody could latch onto, play with the melody they've established—This is just somebody playing their fast scale exercises on auto pilot. Why bother listening to somebody running on auto pilot? There's not real spontaneity happening — big load of pointless ego wank!!! At least 70% of his solos are like this...
@nato101010 Oh, I love a bit of dirt and filth and feeling and mess meself - bit of humanity. Something real. Not just flawless, superfast scale exercise, ego wank...
flawless... but who the fuck could actually listen to this "music"? For me it's nothing more than a demonstration. Treating an instrument like a sport device is just competitive nonsense and has absolutely nothing to do with music. Comments like "this improv just gave me a reason to simply bury my guitar... and myself right underneath." are just embarrassing and shows this sick mentality of wanting to be "THE WORLD'S BEST GUITARIST". I'm ashamed to be one of you - a guitarist.
@Kornhulio18 i totally agree man...it's a lot easier to watch a guy play very fast and bitch about how better and faster he is than you and bla bla bla than just study some fuckin real music and learn how to be a real musician. (of course i don't mean govan isn't a real one)
Have you actually listened to his "music"? Or are you making your opinion based on this video? Have a listen to his album Erotic Cakes.. He's got great taste for playing and writes great instrumental songs.
@Kornhulio18 Absolutely 100% correct. My own sentiments entirely. This guitar playing is just a load of 32nd note ego wank over a silly little 1,4,5 funky 12 bar at about 112 bpm. If you're going to jam over easy music like this, at least play something structured and intelligent that uses some applied music psychology, so it makes sense and doesn't sound like 100% total EGO WANKING...
@kewlfonz I'm not even close to easily impressed. Guthrie covers a ridiculous amount of different scales and techniques, half the comments on this video are you babbling and being a youtube troll. Stop wasting your time wanker
i never got depressed but rather inspired by watching great guitarists play but this improv just gave me a reason to simply bury my guitar... and myself right underneath. xD -.-
@Torture1504 If a load of scale exercises played as 32nd notes over a simple 12 bar 3 chord blues make you want to bury yourself, you deserve to be buried. One less moron in the world= so what...
@vhtnut No! Jimi Hendrix can make the dead rise, because Jimi Hendrix' guitar playing was downright evil. This playing is just scale patterns played at 32nd note groupings designed to impress the easily impressed and gullible... No feel. No soul, just massive ego wanking. Oh I'm the fastest guitarist in the world - So what. Do you think Jimi Hendrix was worried about being the fastest??? I think not...
@kewlfonz jimmy hendrix was first realized because he was faster and more impressive than clapton.. so i think he did like to play fast.. he was one of the fastest, for his time, and one the greatest for his time.. but if you knew anything about music or the beautiful phrasing that guthrie govan has you would understand that he is much more than speed, get out of the seventies and realize that it guthrie govan improved on what hendrix started and made it his own
Open your mind. There is INFINITELY more going on in Guthrie's playing than "look at me! I'm fast!" Funny how nothing he did here involved shredding a simple scale. Hendrix knew nothing of theory, and couldn't even dream of playing anywhere this articulate, with such phrasing and depth. By the way, quantify "feel" and "soul" for me here. Also, look at Guthrie's "Cold Winter Blues" vid and tell me "no soul." NO EMOSHUNZ lol learn theory and open your mind.
@bashoflord uhhmm noo, malmsteen has classical roots and btw he does have feeling ... guthrie govan has blues roots, they are two very different guitar players

@imasterrr he doesnt really stick to scales, although you could say he was using mixo but he mostly just lands on key notes at all the right times with perfect transitions
I stopped playing the guitar about 20 years ago, as I sold all my gear to buy my first car. I've regretted it ever snce, but after watching this video, I bloody LOVED that car. @kewlfonz Oh my god, stop with the Guthrie bashing. We get it, you don't like this song. But don't take this as an example of his overall playing. Listen to Sevens, Fives & Waves by him then say his playing is boring.
Plus if you want more of an example of his playing, go and listen to some of his work with The Fellowship. But stop sucking Hendrix's dick. Yes at the time his playing was revolutionary, but now it really is nothing special.
