Why is it that this BEAUTIFUL, thoughtful and masterfully played song only has 102.000 views and a crappy piece of katie perrie chantalong noise has over 150 million? The masses have no taste...........
I love this live version. I remember seeing him doing this on the Innocent man tour in 1984 at MSG, it was just something to hear this live. I just wonder what happened to music nowadays. There are some good artists, but I truly believe we will never see someone with the longevity or level of catalog that bill has amassed over his career. Blame it on the music industry and their manufactured 2 year wonder artists.
This event did a total disservice to Toots....it certainly didn't take much to NOT HEAR some of toots playing!...this was all about Joel!...the audio was purposfully lowered on Toots in order to give Joel the spotlight.
Toots can really blow. He makes this tune. Of course Billy is great. But the arrangement is so fine. Toots is also a great guitar player and whistle so well that he has been recorded doing it. Listen to his classic Old Spice commercial some time.
@MM2Ghost It's a video glitch, if you go to "Leave a tender moment alone(live) billy Joel" You can hear how it really sounds, although the sound quality is not as good.
@SteveFallon1 Dead right. Billy Joel is one of the finest american musicians I have heard. Americans should be very proud of him. This is an amazing version ot this song.
@ardiesken That's great, I've never heard someone make the harmonica sound so sweet. Yeah the blues guys can wail on them, but no one plays it sweeter than Toots.
I remember recording this concert off Radio 2 onto cassette tape (my how times have changed) and never thought it was commercially available. By the look and sound, I suspect you recorded the simultaneous BBC2 TV transmission.
Never heard a Billy concert bettered since. I remember it included a career topping version of Goodnight Saigon.
Super post. Never tire of hearing it through the years, whether on the radio, cd or watching it on the Concert video.Billy Joel and Mr Thielemans knocked this out of the park. I still get goose bumps when I see the hand signal/eye contact, between the two, at song's end. I knew nothing of Toots' musical resume until THIS evening. What a Monster(in the good sense).A contestant from AMER HAS TALENT mentions Larry Adler and I find out he ain't chopped liver either. We've bn blessed with 2 Monsters!
saw billy when storm front came out. he is the big man on mulberry street.one of the best concerts i've ever seen and i've seem many. definite in the top three.
OMG! I saw this when I was a student at the Univ. of South Carolina walking through the Russell House student union in 1985, and I thought this was so beautiful that this inspired me to run out and buy a harmonica the next . I was and still am in awe of this! Thanks to "Toots" and Billy, I've been playing ever since!
@carsonboy130 - Hi, this song can certainly be classed as a Hit, as it entered the UK Chart on 23 June 1984, as a Double A Side with 'Goodnight Saigon'. The highest position was only No. 29 and it stayed in the chart for just 7 weeks. Info. from "Guiness British Hit Singles" :-) I've not looked at the song listings for Billy Joel hits albums and another respondent says it's on an album 'Essential..."
@Oystercatcher011 It's actually from An Innocent Man - it was the fifth single released - only hit 27 on the US charts (the other singles - Uptown Girl - Tell Her About it - An Innocent man - The Longest Time - Keepin the Faith - all hit the top 20. This Night was the only single not to chart from that album.) Still that boggles the mind - six of the ten singles from Innocent Man hit the charts - can we say Billy Joel was a hit machine?
Great concert, ive still got my video recording of this 25 years later, tho i hope it hasnt deteriated too badly.I actually prefer this over the album version.
You cannot compare Lee Oskar with Toots, As you cant compare Paul Buterfield, James Cotton, Sonny Terry, Jason Ricci. Each is Great in their own styles. Although Im willing to bet they could all play various genre's, You still cannot compare apples to oranges. After All - a great apple does not mean that an orange cannot be great as well.
I had the full concert on video too but over time sadly the tape has 'moulded' beyond playback - wish they'd bought it out on DVD!! Anyway it was 1984 but I agree, a fabulous version of the song so thanks for uploading it. I've been looking for this for ages and it's the first time I've actually found it in a search. Amazing. :)
ive got the whole concert on vid billy joel is absolutley amazing on it especially scenes from an italian resteraunt brill!! and angry young man i love u billy joel!!!!
Wow, thank you so much for posting! I've been looking for this for a very long time. "An innocent man" was the first album I ever bought. I was ten and I fell in love with this song. By my opinion this is one of Joel's best songs and this man's catalouge is very impressive. This version is great but so is the studiorecording. The string arrangement is soo beautiful.
I was 10 years old when this concert was on. It was shown on the BBC and was allowed to stay up and watch it. Taped on VHS on the new invention that was the video recorder haha! Still have it.
Great stuff Billy Joel, one of the best live performers still with us.
