  • Hey Scotty, tapped on the starter and my Jeep crank right up. Thanks for the advise :-)

  • and if smoke starts rollin outta the starter like on my old 93 ford ranger it might be time for a new one lol. my father was wondering though if a car kinda cranks over slow (like his 04 sunfire) but starts fine afterwards, does that mean theres a "Flat spot on the armature"? meaning its about time to get a new one before she dies off completely?

  • @moogmanXanders yes, that OR the battery is getting weak.

  • Hey Scotty I had something very unusual happen. I tried starting my 4runner one day and it wouldnt turn over. I tried a few more times with hints of it almost starting then on one of the last tries it finally turned over. Once i turned it off i had to go through that whole process again. I decided to get a new battery and havent had any problems since. Question is do u think that a bad battery was the issue or will my luck run out? Perplexed.

  • @plasticvideo bad batteries will do that. Pray it was just that.

  • @scottykilmer thanks for the quick reply Scotty! Much appreciated. I'm prayin' :)

  • I have been told that if I put the car battery on the ground it drains fast really fast .

  • @luccerio tale from the past, batteries are insulated now and don't ground that way

  • Today Scotty Kilmer taught me that if my car doesn't start, hit it with a stick until it does. This simplifies automotive maintenance and repair greatly.

    Just kidding, great channel!

  • hey scotty will my engine work if my flywheel is broke?it wont crank over its like my enigne belt is not even moving but it is makin a noise when i try to crank so i think it might be the flywheel is there any tips on how to tell if flywheel is broke? i have a 96 surburban

  • @26hknelson if the flywheel is broken, it will not start using the starter. If it's a standard tranny, you could push start it though

  • @scottykilmer thanks i suscribed

  • @26hknelson so will the flywheel stop the trans from workin cause ,my trans is down also..first my trans went out then 5 weeks later my engine went out and thats a new engine i just paid for so is this the flywheel fault?fuel pump is good starter is good

  • Hi Scotty, Thank you very much for your tip on poking the starter. It worked great, from now on, I will always be carrying a big stick with me. Quick question, how often will this work before it doesn't? I mean should I replace the starter immediately or should I wait a bit?

  • @CGW77CGW change it soon, don't push your luck

  • Hey Scotty i have a 91 ford f150 and it wont crank i checked the wires and they are fine also checked the battery and its fine and i took it to auto zone to get the starter checked and they say its fine but yet no crank they only thing that i replaced was the started solenoid but that worked fine for a while but they it just stopped working then i checked that and it works

im at the end of my rope here

    i need help

  • @GothicMuffinify personally, I'd replace the entire starter, they can not be checked in the air, they must be bolted to an engine or torque tester machine to test correctly. If that's not it, i'd just rewire a remote starter switch on the truck to make it go

  • hey scotty i have a old chevy caprece idk the year but its hot wired and every time i try to turn it over it will just click do you know how to fix this

  • @jjbourne144 weak battery, bad wiring, or bad starter are most common.

  • Hey scotty where is the crankshaft position sensor on a 2002 Chevy trailblazer.

  • @920chicago it's on the driver's side of the engine, back near where the engine bolts to the tranny, it measures the flywheel teeth zooming by

  • Hello Scotty i Have A 1993 Chevy Lumina & The Upper Radiator Hose Had Busted So I Replaced it How Ever After Replacing it It Dose Not Start It Cranks But Does Not Fire Up. Any Ideas ??? Thanxx

  • @GreenFish325 often a blown head gasket. So do my test "how to find if your head gasket is blown" video test first. If that isnt' it, then watch my video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up."

  • If you're car is manual, push/roll start (Not recommended because (according to the owner's manual) it could burn your catalytica converter).

  • the first thing to do is... *toyota badge appears in screen* to buy yaself a descent car.

  • Hey scotty, I have the strange problem with 240sx..The engine crank but i wouldn't start. I check the battery, the feul pump prime and there gas at the filter. I swap the fuel injectors and now it make popping noise while starting...What could it be wrong? There half gas tank inside the tank..

  • @red666A watch my other video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up", has to be one of those. do those checks first.

  • First thing you do is buy American, then you won't have to worry.

  • @gunny426plymouth I beg to differ, as I work on all makes. Forty years ago, yes. But not today.

  • @Josebarbosa92 Oh yes it can, rare as it may be, I've seen it happen. The hydrogen gas that batteries expel can blow up with a spark of connecting the cable at the battery where the gas escapes right there. You know not what you speak off.

  • @Josebarbosa92 HAHA! You should brush up on your basic chemistry or... Think Hindenburg!

  • zici ca-i turbat :))

  • hmm, i've never heard of battery explosions when jumping, i always go terminal to terminal.

  • @HoonProductions oh, I've seen it happen. Rare, but I've seen it a couple times, especially in cold weather conditions.

  • Comment removed

  • hi scotty..question...ok i have a 2004 acura mdx..the problem is the car starts, goes in gear and all..but when i step on the gas it doesn't budge or move...have any idea on what step i should take to find out whats wrong with it. thanks. your answer is appreciated..

  • @DuBNeTiX that would be your neutral safety switch, which prevent the car to start in gear . over time it get to a point where it has too much play but don't worry its a easy fix. Just find where it is and adjust it. (some car have it around the transmission if you cant find it use Google.)

  • video out of play mate

  • There is also one other trick that may work if you are using a car with an automatic transmission. As the shift ages with use, the position sensor in the shifter may come out of alignment ever so slightly and not disengage the safety switch for the starter.

It happens every so often in my car, and a good whack to the back of the shifter usually fixes it.

  • I've been told that placing a charged battery on the concrete will make it loose charge .. true ?

  • @Kingsevends false, not unless you go into a time machine to the past. New batteries don't do that, they are insulated.

  • @scottykilmer hey what do i when the car won't start but and 2 solenoid's are clicking like i had th ecar going but then the cold weather won

  • @skechmasters clicking is often not enough power to make things work, check the battery and cable connections first.

  • @scottykilmer would a boost help???? but if those don't work what do you think the problem could be

  • I'm a experience that right now with my celica, it crank but won't start.

  • @Msmeen81 then watch my other video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up"

  • I put the negative on the batery all the time and it never exploded. . are you serious sbout th eexplosion?

  • @hindoid yes, it's rare, but I've seen it happen a couple of times in my lifetime of workiing on em. Hydrogen gas blows up from sparks near it.

  • Can't do the "stick test" on many Lexus V8. Damn started sits between the heads of the motor in the valley. Can't get to it with taking the entire upper intake manifold off!!!

  • @smithraymond09029 try a long thin screwdriver to whack it with, i'VE DONE THAT.

  • @scottykilmer haha, my dad use to do that with his 86 Taurus, it worked everytime lol

  • scotty, ive tried the stick method, now the stick is stuck inside my engine and i have to drive around with my hood half open. i get around sticking my head out the window but its really embarassing HELP

  • @BLAKESTONED If you're serious, get a hack saw and cut the end off.

  • MALDITO CABRON NO REVELES LOS SECRETOS DE LOS ELECTRICOS XD XD XD

  • I'm watching your videos on the other side of the world and they are great! Thank you. Very helpful.

  • thanks scotty your vids are great

  • Do you think water might have gone inside the cylinder head somehow..its getting fuel i think, cause every crank causes the sparkplug to turn black which is a sign of rich fuel...so i don't know if its getting spark or not, but definately getting fuel. I use the high pressure water sprayer and sprayed everywhere inside the engine bay including the catalytic converter and underneath the tranny. Any suggestion is high appreciated..i have tried continuous starting until i ran out of battery.

  • @DuBNeTiX NEVER clean an engine with water, big mistake, tons of electronics to ruin under the hood. Now you have to find out what isn't working, so watch my video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up" to find what isn't working. good luck

  • @scottykilmer at the car detailing place that i used to work at we always cleaned out the cars motor with a high pressure hose. We also had the car running in the process, we went through hundreds of cars and none of them had problems as the water would have already dried up before turning the motor off, do you still think that doing this may still have caused problems that were not yet shown and may occur later?

  • @EddieLineage2 yes, see that all the time. Water and electricity and computers do not go together.

  • @scottykilmer haha well that does make sense, if i was to clean out my motor how do you suggest i go about doing it if you can't use water?

  • @EddieLineage2 i just wouldnt spray a hot engine and exhaust manifold with water,

would that not just be asking for hairline cracks ?

  • @boolshmool it's not flooding the engine with water, the high pressure hose doesn't spit out as much water as what a normal hose does. But when you think about it, if you were to clean your motor once with water what is that going to do? Cars with scoops would have to get water up inside the motor when it rains all the time? So does that mean that their motors would crack all the time? I don't actually know but it just sounds logical

  • @EddieLineage2 You know you're right, I was at a place one day I took my car for an engine degrease, and the owner of the place said "we should give your car a little time to cool down, I dont want to blast your engine while its hot..." but I think what he meant is that the degreaserr can etch the metal. leaving white stains on aluminum blocks...

    thanks for correcting me

  • @boolshmool Yeah we used a degreaser on the motor and it can stain the metals but it also depends on how diluted the degreaser is and whether or not you wet the motor before putting the degeaser on and for the period of time you let it sit. If you rinse the motor, apply the degreaser and then rinse it off straight away, it doesn't stain anything :)

  • hello scotty...i'm having a problem with my car not starting...it cranks but will not start.. i've took the car to a car wash and sprayed simple green everywhere in the engine bay. I have a 2000 acura integra gsr... so back to the engine wash down..after the simple green i let it soak for a good 5 min...then sprayed it with a high pressure that every car wash have.. engine bay is super clean..now car crank but won't start...any suggestion..i even changed out my sparkplugs ..

  • bought and installed a new bicycle engine kit off ebay. Two-stoke. ran for about 5 seconds, then nothing. Won't start. Getting spark and fuel. Think it's my fuel mixture? any suggestions?

  • @drewkuch normally that's a carburetor problem, take it apart and clean it all out.

  • @scottykilmer everything is brand new, including the carb. Maybe the carb settings then? It also came with another carb, different one, so maybe i'll try that. Thanks!

  • I got a Astro van and sometimes it wont start but eventually it does but it takes a long time. what should I do?

  • @863cocho try my other video "how to clean fuel injectors in your car" and pray that fixes it.

  • Wow... You must be a brain surgeon.. Nice tutorial... I think My mom knows more about cars then you..

  • I have a 2003 Nissan Sentra SER Spec v, car lost power after having two engine misfires, they were fixed but still feel the loss of power, what could it be, carbon deposits, any ideas Scotty?????

  • Hey scotty got a weird situation i have a 2001 crysler seibring and its always had problems but it snowed about 12 inches and my car was parked out side now my key wont turn and the steering column is stuck could the ABS light be the reason? or is there a way i can unlock it? thanks

  • So . . what are the $80 Jumper Cables made of?

    Thanks for the Tip!

  • @scottykilmer Hi Scotty, i recently washed my engine on my 93' honda prelude sr 5 spd, covered distributor and air intake with a plastic bag but forgot to cover the alternator. It was cranking, but wouldnt start, now it doesnt crank but makes "clicking" noise from the engine. Whats the problem and how much would it cost? thanks in advance

p.s. the car isnt insured and has been parked for about 2 years but i start it and let it run every week.

  • thank you thank you thank you.....

  • Oh I did forget to mention It does have a full tank of gas, and it is a 5-speed manual and I am pressing the clutch in. It does not crank, but the lights come on, with all the new parts so I have installed everything properly

  • Getting a little frustrated here Scotty...not at you, but I have been trying to start my car...the battery is new, I put a new starter in it, put a new starter solenoid and also a new ignition switch but it still won't start. What should I try next?

  • @Friday032610 perhaps another car. I assume it is not cranking at all. If so, try turning the engine crank bolt with a cheater bar and socket to see if the engine is locked up, If you can't turn it by hand, the engine's toast. But if you can, perhaps hot wire the new starter directlyf rom the battery, and if that works, put a remote starter button on the dash to start it direclty. Scottu

  • @scottykilmer I might need to do that starter button. What I did is I took a 1/2 inch wrench to the solenoid, and used it to touch the post where you plug the red connector to the battery and that small post underneath it and...crrrrrrrrank! It started.

I was surfing through google, and I did see something regarding a clutch safety switch, something that I didn't mention yet. I think...this is the reason why I cant start it while sitting in the driver's seat, What do you think?

  • @Friday032610 just bypass that dumb switch by cutting the wires and twisting them together to see if that's bad.

  • @scottykilmer or maybe fix the issue properly. Ever considered doing that? Mechanic here, making a new switch is neither acceptable, nor safety-able.

  • @Friday032610

    hmmmmm maybe ECU broke ????

  • Woke up this AM, turned the key, and car tries to start, but won't. Doesn't seem to be getting any gas. Had this exact same problem back in June. Had the car towed to a mechanic, and when they tried starting it, it started. Is it a fluke? Bad/watery gas? Kind of at a loss right now.

  • @nyracingfan tons of things can do that. So have a mechanic scan it with a dealer level scan computer, often hidden information on flaws is inside there.

  • Thanks for the advises Scotty! you are awesome!

  • i have a car that i left on a feild i filleditup withnew feul put in new feul pump wont start my mechanic sprayed something in air intake then it wanted to start unless he does that nothing happens even when he does do it it is no where near starting wot should i do

  • @MrMagicseeds Watch my video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up" and try all that, Scotty

  • My car wont start and now says "low oil". If I put oil in it, do you think it will start?

  • @reeree212 give it a try, but check your oil first to see if it's low or if the warning system is just broken. Scotty

  • 2002 not 200

  • Hey so i have a 200 Hyundai accent and i went to start it yesterday and my car wouldnt start. thought it may have been the cold that did it (-20C outside) so waited for it to warm still wouldnt work, tried to boost, nothing. makes no noise, wont turn over no click think its my starter?

  • @FloodLight19 try jump starting it, and if nothing happens, replace the starter. Scotty

  • @FloodLight19 if it starts by jump starting it and does it again it a bad battery

  • @oscar121293 thanks! but i had to have the starter replaced

  • @FloodLight19 same thing happened to me, found out it was a bad connection to my battery

  • at 0:57.....MS?

  • Hey Scotty i have a 1995 buick century and ive recently not been able to turn the key all the way to the ignition ,just for electronics, what does this mean?

  • @dewboy1012 YOu need a new ignition switch assembly, but try spraying WD 40 in there first and pray,. Scotty

  • Scotty, we've had our solenoid replaced but it still won't start. It has one of those remote automatic starters. Do you think that could be the culprit?

  • @lllllllRobot could be, or a bad starter. I hate those stupid remote, too complex, I'd remove it myself. Scotty

  • Scotty, thanks for sharing your expert tips especially the " big stick tapping on the starter " suggestion. That is a brilliant temporary solution.

  • scotty I have a kia 2001 sportage, the other morning I went to start it I opened the driver door the alarm systym went off, never ususally it is the pass, door that goes off. it was first day down at 29' night & i have a 6 month old AAA battery, when i went to the store came out the ingition wouldn't turn over the lights came on, it just didn't do anything, i waited a hour after one more try & it started again, since then it has done the same thing again 2 times what could it be? help allison

  • @allison481959 I would replace the battery and pray it's that simple. They make batteries like crap these days, I had one just go out on my toyota and it was the same age. i was pissed when I figured that out. Scotty

  • @allison481959 Apart from Scotty's expert advice, I would recommend that you ensure both your battery terminals are tightly secured to the positive and negative battery posts. I once had intermittent ignition problems which was caused by such loose connections.

  • OK my moms car has problems starting when car hot warm what ever why ??? what can i do or check for its an oldsmobile 9sumthing i think its a v4 and why isnt there a radiator cap on the radiator ??? even the reservoir is all weird i dunno back to starting problems

  • @Brendaspaperclip they often flood out and don't start when hot. Try my video first a"how to clean fuel injectors in your car" and have that done, it may fix it without replacing the injectors. Scotty

  • Whats with all the oil jugs ?

  • @0peacenlove I recycle oil, they hold em till I turn em in. Scotty

  • Hi scotty I have a 98 acura integra and it won't start and I just put in a new battery and a new starter but still nothing can you please help

  • @xLM10FCBx watch my video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up" and try all that. Scotty

  • the boom stick trick works my dad showed me that several years ago on a old Nissan

  • my car doesnt crank when i turn the key but the dashboard lights up and ac goes on. idk whats wrong, help please

  • @chillcoconut if it doesn't crank at all, first try jump starting it. If if doesn't jump start, suspect a bad starter. Scotty

  • @chillcoconut the starter got jammed somehow, but i just had water build up in the gas tank and it froze the fuel lines. Thanks for your videos i find them a life saver for my ignorance of these things but this is the only way i can learn.

  • Hi Scotty! i have a 2002 Toyota Echo, and when i accelerate from 0 - 60 it goes to stall around the 40 mark, then it becomes good, then it gets to 80 and starts puttering, and stalls, and i have to start it back up doing 80 ks! can you please help?!

  • @AllWheelsFilming often a clogged fuel filter or weak fuel pump, start there. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer thanks !

  • hey scotty. got a 91 civic hatch back with a b16 DOHC motor swap.

i wired everything up accordingly. the car has been on a push start for about 3 years and i havent had a problem with it. after working with some of my grounds and moving them around to better places, i get in to crank it, and nothing. the starter engages but doesnt spin. i pull the starter out and wire it straight from the battery and it spins freely. my main relay clicks on sometimes and i can hear the fule pump priming any help

  • @The91efcivic swapping diff motors is a mistake if they are not the same exact engine size and design. sounds like someone messed up the wiring changing motors, there's tons of wires that can go bad. Watch my video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start" and when you hot wire the starter, do all those tests. You can always rewire power to the starter direct from the ignition switch, that's simple. Scotty

  • Usually a starter pistol will get your car going.

  • ok so should i change all the injectors? also why wont my car start anymore? would i have done damage to something else because i drove it whilst having a blocked converter for 4 days?

  • Hi Scotty i have a Daewoo Lanos 98, I was driving on hwy when car loss power when i accelerated and noticed my catalytic converter was red hot, but continued to drive for 4 days with the same problem. now car cranks but does not start. i changed the C-converter, spark plugs and fuel filter and it starts for 1 sec then dies. can you help me with both these problems. 1-converter blockage and car dieing? cheers

  • @MrAdzbatchelor red hot means the converter is running super hot, either a really lean fuel mixture in the engine causes that, OR leaking injectors dripping gas into the exhaust. Scotty

  • Hello Scotty my car clicks and the dash lights come on but it won't start. What do you think?

  • @sarainreno30 try jump starting it, and if it doesn't, replace the starter. Replace the battery if it does that jumping. Scotty

  • At 2:50 the speed of sound travels so slowly!!! I cant stop laughing, watch it. : )

  • Sorry I meant Scotty!

  • Hey Steve! My1988 land cruiser has a good battery, 20 gallons of gasoline , and cranks but will not turn over and start- I don't think it has to do with the fuel - it stalled on me while driving today and shut off- what do I do?

  • @PrometheusDidIt then watch my other video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up" and do those tests. Scotty

  • @PrometheusDidIt Its scotty

  • Hi scotty, my 2000 toyota echo stalls when it goes over 80 kph, what does it mean?

  • @BrumbysRun28 generally, clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, or clogged catalytic converter. Scotty

  • hi my 2001 celica will start but after 4 seconds it will go off.... and after i start it i need to push the gas so it wont stall

  • @pinoyflipside often a vacuum leak, watch my video "how to fix a car that idles poorly" and try all that. Scotty

  • that helped me so much thnks

  • I had a new engine installed in my Grand Prix. Lately when I try to start the car it won't start, but after a few attempts to start the car it will cut on, but often when I drive the car it will cut off, or sometimes appear to cut off only to turn back on. Some-days it needs a jump to start it,and other days it will simply cut on as if there was nothing wrong with it. My battery is old. If the car shuts off is that a problem due to low voltage from the battery, or a faulty starter?

  • @bobleeswa66er have the battery load tested first, if it's OK, replace the starter next. Scotty

  • Your voice is not in sync with video. Thanks for the info.

  • @frankie2234 once they are posted, they can't be changed. Watch all my newer videos from the past couple years, they are shot with a much better camera, a panasonic full HD. Scotty

  • good videos :)

  • sounds like you need a new serp belt or tensioner. ;)

  • @scottykilmer

Hi Mr. Scotty I was wondering how many minutes to charge a car battery I usually keep the engine running for 15 mins or is it longer than that?

  • @Zero4ph depends on the shape the battery is in. If it's good, 15 minutes every couple days would be fine. scotty

  • @scottykilmer

I guess I should disable that watch in the dash board I believe that causes my battery to die down quickly

  • Props for rocking a Celica.

  • few misdirections.

    1. battery won't blowup if you connect to the neg.a dead battery. connecting to the frame allows you to start the dead car right from the good battery. works only if your alt. works to keep it going

BATTERY LOAD TEST... put a volt-meter on the battery (analog works best) start the car while watching the volt-meter. if volts drop more than 2 volts from while cranking. replace battery soon.

2 you can reprime the fuel after run empty by,cycle key 3-4 times to power, then start.

  • He's quite a nervous guy, but it's very informative. Didn't know, that broken starter motors like a little beating... xD

  • STOP YELLING AT ME!! IM TRYING MY BEST >_<

  • @HiIAmABear I'm yelling at Everyone, not you in particular. Scotty

  • @HiIAmABear LOL

  • People always laugh and think i am joking when i tell them to get something and hit the starter. FYI some vehicle have their starts inside the engine. Mostly V8's located in the valley. Like Cadillac, Lexus, and Toyota.

  • U r an awesome dude!!! Thanks

  • Heyy u have a 1986 Honda Crx si... It won't start.. it cranks but nothing.. I bought a new starter and battery.. its standard soo the only way to turn it on is pushing it.. any helpfull tips.?

  • @DaSkX3 Strange, that it won't crank but will push start. In that case, the starter is not spinning the engine fast enough. I would suspect bad starter or bad wiring from the battery to the starter. Scotty

  • @DaSkX3 Alternator or wiring mate.Check the voltage to the battery.Should be 12 or lil higher

  • Hey I think I have a bad starter. Mg car is a 95 Honda civic ex 4 door. It has been sitting for a year. And I don't have money for a new starter. So could you please help me out. My car is at my friends and if I can't get if running in a few days her grandpa is gonna smash it. So can u please pleas help me out.

  • @low2show Push start it if it's a standard tranny. If not, while turning the key, have someone hit the starter with ahammer, they will often then magically start to work. Scotty

  • @low2show If your dashboard lights dont come on when your key is in Start position. Or if the lights go our after turning... its your Ignition Switch located to the left of your steering wheel. The solder contacts develop pivots if you jump your car too many times due to high voltage.

My new starter was only $60 off Amazon... easy to install. If you cant afford $60 then you dont deserve to own a car.

  • and i thought he would kill the car with the stick! LOL

  • I have a 91 Honda crx, and in the summer it wouldn't start if it was hot [also the performance was noticeably crappier when i got it running]. Well it turned out being the main relay, apparently the soldering points on the little circuit board can wear down after about 20 years and fail to tell the fuel pump to do it's job and send fuel to the motor, anyway those soldering points just needed to be re-soldered. But a temporary quick fix would be just tapping the main relay while starting the car

  • @CRXluvr You can also replace the main relay by just wiring the wires directly. They run fine that way, I've done tons of em. That relay is not truly needed in such a small car with such low voltage requirements. It was overkill. Scotty
