I dont like the female backing vocals in the Elvis version. Diamond sells it. You get the feeling he's remembering the experience that inspired the song. Even more so than the very similar "Marina Del Ray" by George Straight. Well, similar enough to bring it to my mind.

@trollerguy I smile at how songs bring back memories, sorry yours wasn't a fond one, but even so, it is a memory and it speaks volumes to the extent Neil Diamonds songs touched lives and all the years may pass but when we hear these beautiful songs it takes us back again. This song fills my mind too, so many great memories of wonderful days of my teens, it is one of my favorites, most of his classics were what i would play over and over, I am so happy I was able to see him perform live.

One of two songs written by Neil to have been recorded by Elvis. Supposedly Neil was using a recording studio in Memphis where Elvis wanted to record in early 1969, and a deal was worked out in which Elvis got the studio time in exchange for recording one of Neil's songs, which turned out to be this one. The other song that Elvis did was "Sweet Caroline".
