OK let's all make fun of Neil for the sequined outfits and the vegas-style showboating. But let's not forget he's one of the most talented singers/songwriters in the history of pop/rock music, OK?
The mere sound of his voice is like a present from God to human kind, it has been to me for all of my life, long before I even knew what he was singing for I didn't know the language. Desde Guatemala saludos para los amantes de Neil Diamond for ever!
All sensuous music begins and ends with Neil Diamond.....I remember listening to this song at the tender age of 14 after my Mother left my father and weeping with uncontrollable sorrow....
To have the King of Rock & Roll cover ones song is a true testament to the genius of the writer of the song. And Neil Diamond is that one jewel whom songs have been covered by artist of all genres. The greatest singer/songwriter of our time.
This has to be my favorite song, just for his voice. I've been listening to Neil since i was a child, and now in my 30's it never gets old. I will never tire of listening to him, whatever is going on in my life.. his music always makes me happy and i love him for it. Come back to Dublin Neil.. x
I dont like the female backing vocals in the Elvis version. Diamond sells it. You get the feeling he's remembering the experience that inspired the song. Even more so than the very similar "Marina Del Ray" by George Straight. Well, similar enough to bring it to my mind.
Trollerguy, nice to see another LDS person! I live about 2 miles from the Portland temple. I wonder if Neil is as big in Austraila as it seems? I've heard he's bigger than Elvis there..
Gosh you are close, only 2 miles away. You should go there often. I don't know about Australia but being a person that mainly listens to reggae tunes... Neil has been one of my non reggae favorites.
another early, great song by a masterful songwriter. Why has this man not been added to the list of people in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Who does we have to pay off to get this done?
Remember hearing this as I lay on my stomach across my bed with my chin down into my folded arms wondering what happened. Had just bought my new car 1970, and realized the girl I was going to be with on my military 30 days leave was not with me anymore.
@trollerguy I smile at how songs bring back memories, sorry yours wasn't a fond one, but even so, it is a memory and it speaks volumes to the extent Neil Diamonds songs touched lives and all the years may pass but when we hear these beautiful songs it takes us back again. This song fills my mind too, so many great memories of wonderful days of my teens, it is one of my favorites, most of his classics were what i would play over and over, I am so happy I was able to see him perform live.
It's a comment on a moment. Few artists can portray a split-second or a feeling like this. Mr Diamond is a poet and I cry when I hear this without knowing why but these words touch me on a subconscious level and I am glad.
This remarkable song always gives me the blues when I hear it. On my return from Vietnam I had just got my ring back from my favorite girl after going over to her house. You can guess the song I was hearing driving away into the night...with my shotgun blasted pride..trying to patch the holes with anything I could find....
Thank you... that event has lasted in my mind, it will always be there as I think back in my memories. When I left it was all roses ... but when I got back .....
I'm sorry to hear that....your divorce. I hope you are still young enough to find some great lady again. Been close to Australia, went to New Zealand long ago. The woman I found was meant for me. We will soon be sealed for eternity in the Mormon Temple in San Antonio, Texas
@trollerguy That is one of the saddest stories I've ever heard. My brother was a Viet Nam vet so that war hit me very close to home. Your story makes me think of the song "The Song Remembers When" by Trisha Yearwood. A song really can put you back to a moment in time, can't it?
..forever that moment in time...hard to catch that moments feelings...he seems to catch thoes precious moments....*****for lyrics ****** for feelings....thanks for the post...
One of two songs written by Neil to have been recorded by Elvis. Supposedly Neil was using a recording studio in Memphis where Elvis wanted to record in early 1969, and a deal was worked out in which Elvis got the studio time in exchange for recording one of Neil's songs, which turned out to be this one. The other song that Elvis did was "Sweet Caroline".
I just love this song......its so heart touching. A special year and a special song with words to melt a womens heart. Memories mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
