I've noticed than generally one either makes fast times the Be-all End-all to thoroughbred racing, or one does not. And just as classier runners force their big-figure foes to run slower (losing) races, world record setters as convincing as Spectacular Bid can wind up "toyed with," by Affirmed, before going on to set more records.i watched Double Discount set his 1:57 2/5 WR, for 1 ¼ Mile--but he was *an afterthought*--just like Sirlad & Text, Coastal & Czarivich, toting feathers behind Affirmed
@JayAr709 You also might want to notice a 4 yr. Double Discount running on grass carrying 116 lbs on one of the fastest grass tracks at Santa Anita in the world. Put the Bid on grass if he could run on grass in which I believe he could carrying 116 lbs then lets see his time. Double Discount was a one time wonder. What other records did he have? None that I know of. Thats the other afterthought.
And down the strecth 'They' come? It should have been Down the strecth 'he' comes for Secretariat. No horse within a 1/16 mile of him. For Slew & Affirmed you are correct down the strecth 'They' come.
@rscarbro100 "Loose on The Lead," alright -- which to some extent goes a long way toward explaining his big figures, apart from the the overall lacklustre quality of the competition Secretariat faced, as a 3-year old.
@JayAr709 Secretariat done the big figures all by himself. Twice a Prince running a 2:28 2/5 Belmont is no clouch wouldn't you say? Please spare me the lengths. Clock him to get the time. Sham breaking the Derby & Preakness track record himself seems to be no clouch. Beating 4 older champion horses in one race is no clouch. Check out the Slew competition if you want lackllustre quality. Its a no brainer.
@JayAr709 Riva Ridge 1 3/16 mile World Record still stands and if no mistaken probably broke the record also in the Marlboro Cup race of course Big Red got the better. Cougar II came close as well and ran the 2nd fastest 9 furlong in history up to that time in another race in 1:39 1/5. The horses that finished 2, 3 and 4 in the Derby behind Secretariat had better times than Slew did in his Derby. How that for lackluster quality?
Anyone else get here from the Office episode where Erin spouts out all these names? The ones in this video were first, then: Citation, Assault, Cathlete, Rollaway, War Admiral, Omaha, Gallant Fox, Star Shoot. Now I know what she was talking about lol.
Affirmed seemed like he didn't want to just win, he wanted to knock out Alyadar, Slew wanted to run but on HIS terms, and well Secretariat-need we say more that the name? All 3 were unique and special in their own way.
Thanks for the review. What an experience that was filming those great horses. Secretariat was the most exciting in that I almost got thrown over the rail. I was one tier up. The Affirmed/alydar was the most exciting RACE. Nose to nose. They ran like they were one horse..
wow....those videos are really something else. what a real treasure you have for yourself. you obviously had a great point view too. the last 3 triple crown winners on home video - that's an awesome collection
