  • Thanks for uploading, had no idea these early concerts existed on video. Now I can buy this on DVD and watch in higher quality! Too bad big music doesn't understand this...

  • bensisko16, I have been a longtime Gord fan. This is a true story. When I was sitting in the Dentist's Chair in 1976 as a young boy I heard CAREFREE HIGHWAY and really liked it. It was about when I was 8 years old . I also remember hearing HOTEL CALIFORNIA by the Eagles and liked it as well. Gord's voice was so cool. So vibrant, so husky. Another great little tune by Gord, SATURDAY CLOTHES. Oh and maybe my alltime favorite Gord tune SHADOWS. thankyou.

  • @robtuohy1 Thanks for the comments. It's great to hear such great anecdotes. Thanks.

  • @bensisko16 Well thank YOU for posting these timeless classics. It's so great to see Gord at a younger age where his voice was more vibrant. Do you have any idea if I can purchase this concert? I've tried Amazon and CD Universe, with no luck. Cheers.

  • @robtuohy1 I've only seen one site with this Concert for sale on DVD. This site is ioffer.com/i/gordon-lightfoot-bbc-in-concert-dvd-506156581

I'm not sure how reliable this web site is but it's worth a look. I recorded the concert from the TV on the Satellite Channel BBC4 in Stereo, but an alternative is to download it from Youtube on this channel using RealPlayer Software which is completely free and safe to use software. Hope this is useful. Bensisko.

  • @bensisko16 Thankyou very much for your help. I have purchased a copy on DVD and I hope to receive it in a few weeks. You have been very kind. Looking forward to sharing more thoughts and comments about this great Canadian Music Legend very soon. Cheers, Rob.

  • @robtuohy1 Excellent point. Youtube is a great preview of concerts such as this and opens up the market for the higher quality DVD if one chooses. Although for me, as long as it's in stereo as this video is, I'm happy, so for me the DVD would be just a bonus. Thanks for the comment. Bensisko

  • 1970's American Folk music at it's best! And Lightfoot is my all time favorite Canadian American singer /songwriter!

  • @dukecole1 errr,he's is, and always has been, strictly CANADIAN....eh?

  • INCREDIBLY cool! Thanks for posting!!

  • This is a great concert. Does anyone know where I can get it on DVD?

  • I also appreciate that we all have different tastes, but the writing and musicianship here is just so superb. In my mind this music will certainly endure a long time. We are very lucky to have Gord as a Canadian.

  • Pretty near as good as it got! I saw him perform in Saskatoon two weeks ago and he's still got the magic. Unbelievable.

  • Man, these guys are tight. It's live, but sounds like it was done in a recording studio. Quality.

  • I have seen LIghtfoot several times. I remember once in Dallas he played 'If You Could Read My Mind' and said 'Hey, that was fun', and played the whole song again. And Red is good.

  • Wow, brings back memories for me, I was sick one night & caught the Johnny Cash Show & Gordon was on and I was hooked. In the 70's I saw him at least 12 times & about 2 years ago at Town Hall & was lucky enough to meet & talk to him...his music still stands and always will, a poet, a musician, a singer all in one and did I forget one of the best songwriters of any time. Getting sick that night was one of the best things to ever happen to me. Never stop Gordon!!!

  • Happy Birthday Gordon. May you celebrate many more. You have given your fans all we could ask for. God bless you.

  • I'll never forget the time Gord got halfway thru Wreck of the E.F. and missed a line and stopped the show and had the band start from the beginning! Classic!

  • @1tcrjr would have loved to have seen that ! wow !

  • this is clasic music

  • As a boy I grew up listening to Gordon Lightfoot and similar artists. It was the 1990s when I was a boy. Yup, I listened to good old Gordy than BSB and 'NSYNC. Gordy will always have a place in my heart :-)

  • This kinda of music is not gone, never will be! Gordon's songs & lyrics were used in major movies and popular dancemix tunes. "If you could read my mind" does that not ring a bell or r u hiding in a closet somewhere in the deep dark dungeons. I am an avid classic metal fan but was brought up listening to contemporary music as a child, Gordon is one of my all time favorites. His music will live on beyond our time....enough said!

  • I am so glad you posted this, I have been a fan of Gordon Lightfoot for over 40 years, His music always puts a smile on my face and I always remember a time when times were so good...again thank you!!

  • Gordon Lightfoot songs have been a mainstay of my playing and singing for decades. While other artists' stuff tended to come and go with me, his music just "sticks'. Great stories ,lyrics and melodies. And a song for any mood or event you might find yourself in....thanks Gordon, you are timeless. Dave

  • Get the audio from this tune at soundnabber doht cohm.

  • Great video!

  • Thank you to all of you who have sent such wonderful comments about my dad

    (Red Shea)

We continue to enjoy all of them

    Thank you

  • Watching Red Shea.... and Rick when they were young,,, you had to look twice.... I never ever had to look to hear Red Shea... probably the greatest guitarman to ever pic one up!

  • This kind of music is GONE, whether anyone wants to admit it or not.

  • @hugfrombug don't agree. I think this kind of music is timeless. In a hundred years+, Gordon's music will still be appreciated. For me it's the cream of what music is all about but i do understand that everyone has different taste. I'm sure your music taste falls in the same category. Anyway, long live Gordon and his music.

  • @bensisko16

LOL I'm sorry if I caused a misinterpretation. I meant that I don't believe we'll ever see these kinds of artists anymore. The kinds of artists who have created this kind of music are just GONE. The music itself is timeless.

  • @hugfrombug HIS MUSIC IS TIMELESS, HUNDREDS STILL GO TO SEE HIM PERFORM HIS CRAFT, NONE OF THEM WILL ADMIT IT. i WOULD THINK TO REALLY ENJOY HIS MUSIC YOU MUST LIVE IT,,THIS MUSIC IS NOT OF YOUR TIME, WHAT EVER THAT IS.

  • @hugfrombug Sure it is, just like opera and classical music..lol!, it`s all old stuff and has no relevance..right?..try telling that to millions of fans, ( of which I am unashamedly one).

  • @hugfrombug I don't think so. I'm 20 and lots of clubs in Toronto have this style folk artists -- young and old alike! Very popular, it'll probably come back in style. Some time. Lightfoot is amazing!

  • @hugfrombug Gone? NEVER!!! Music like this is timeless...Real melodies and lyrics. There is less and less of that today,.

  • @hugfrombug

You're exactly right on your comments. And if you need any confirmation of them, I'm sure you could get it from any one of Gordon's millions of fans - young and old. I'm being facetious of course.

Gordon's songs will live on long after we have all passed. Genres may come and go, but a great song will always pass the test of time, and Gordon's will certainly pass even the most rigorous of tests that time may bring.

    Regards,

    BobbyK

  • @hugfrombug I understand what you are sayin' if you mean the commercially produced music carefully vetted by the industry's editors. Gordon, Joni, and others took their music to the people and remained true to themselves. Today I do think there should be a mechanism whereby we could pay these artists more directly on the Internet. Obviously, you pay when attending their concerts whether they be large halls or small clubs and coffee shops.

  • Thanks to bensisko -- you rule!

  • one of the greatest legends in western music

  • thanks for the gem of a video

  • Thank you to everyone for such great comments. Gordon is a true Star and his band are truly magnificent. I am delighted that so many people love Gordon's music as much as I do. Cheers.

  • @bensisko16 I love this type music. Thanks!

  • Thank You so very very much for posting this concert . I will never forget "falling in love" with Gordon so many years ago . A rainy night at a concert in Saratoga Springs NY . I was mesmerized by his music . Thank You Gordon for so many beautiful songs, there has never been anyone like you !

  • Looking at this simply wonderful video, I can say, "This man and his music is part of my country's culture, its heritage, its history." Thanks, Gordon, for all the great music you've brought us, and thanks to the person who archived this concert for us and posted it here.

  • I was never a big fan of the Summer Side of Life album. But after watching these videos, I've changed my mind. I can't the poster of these videos enough. The richness of his voice brings tears to my eyes. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert covering 4 decades...Forever a fan of Gord.

  • very nice song, Gordon Lightfoot is the most important songwriter.....

  • He was so on top of his game at that time, it's scary. Looks, voice, playing, and some of his best tunes ever, and in my opinion best stage presence of his career. Red wipes the floor with Terry Clements to my ears, but they had different styles, and Terry will be missed. What an era! Love ya' Gord..

  • This was a real treat. What a strong voice he had. And to see it with Red Shea was a bonus. Terry was great but I starting listening to these guys during Red's time so it brings back fond memories. Thank you for this...I'll be watching it again.

  • This was a real treat. What a strong voice he had. Thank you for this...I'll be watching it again.

  • If you know the context of the song , It is very powerful !!

  • Summerside of life had a change of lyrics prior to it's release.I'm guessing it was considered religious in this live version. I personally like the reference to Christ. He came down to save us all!

  • @mardukanu1 yeah you can definitely tell the lyrics were a work in progress. neat to hear the other ideas that (though really good) were left out of the definitive version.

  • thk u for posting this!!!! american alex

  • Thank you so much for posting this concert. I haven't been so moved since the late sixties and early 70's when I would see them all live. As a young musicians my friends and I were mesmerized by the sound of this fantastic trio. John and then Rick on bass and especially Red's guitar work that blended so well with the Lightfoot strumming and picking simply amazed us. And that voice! That pure resonating tone that Gord had back then. How I wish it hadn't faded so over the years. Thanks again!!!

  • GORDON LIGHTFOOT IN CONCERT - BBC - 1972

This program titled "Gordon Lightfoot In Concert" aired on January 22, 1972 at 11 PM. It was actually taped in the spring of 1971 before Summer Side Of Life was released. Accompanied by Red Shea and Rick Haynes.

  • Gordon, your Father Red and Rick Hanes could quite possibly be the best trio n any form of music that time will ever see. Your Father and later Terry Clenents were unbelievable, and Rick was the rock on the other side. You wont find anyone except maybe James Taylor who sounds as good live as they do in the studio. I think Gord is the Greatest singer songer that has ever lived, yes even better than Dylan. Thanks Ben Sisko for uploading this concert.

  • @kjoefive I definitely agree ! Great point !

  • @ eltoft: In my opinion your Dad's accompaniments were an essential part of Gordon's wonderful sound. Red Shea's playing has been an inspiration to me all my life, and I always thought his perfect guitar parts were what good music should be like, they made the songs beautiful. You deserve to be so proud of what he created, we miss him and sadly there hasn't been another player who could create the magic that he did.

  • @nigsvon i hold red shea, and terry clements. in a group in my heart. i cherish what they could do. tell stories with their guitars. from behind the scenes. aka not lead guitar. but their melodies were amazing

  • the soundtrack to my life!

My dad introduced me to GL at a young age, sitting quietly listening to every song and building the pictures in my mind..i will always remember my dad through his love off music and his love of gordon. RIP Dad thanks for everything i hold close.

  • Thank-You!

  • Moro no Brasil e desde de 1994 ouvi pela primeira vez Gordon Lightfoot, é incrível como as musicas são lindas e todo em casa gostam muito. Parabéns.

I live in Brasil and since 1994 I heard Gordon for first time, is amazing, the song are beautifull and in my house everubody love him. Congratulation.

  • This is the root of a life time of great music---- this is gold! Thank you so much for sharing.

  • WOW holy shit talk about CLASSIC!!!!!! man what a gem!!!! even if you kinda like Gord this is SO GOLD. Look and listen!!!! anything like this around now?

  • This is an amazing version of Summerside !!

  • To elltoft.... These videos of Gordon Lightfoot, and your da Red Shea as well as his long time bass player brings back such great memories. My guitar style came straight from the Lightfoot.Shea styles. I was so saddened to hear of Red's passing. He was such a talent. I can sure understand your pride in watching and hearing this.

    Earl Brown

  • This is truely a classic ! I love the fact that Gord adlibs and there is no denying Rick Haynes' bass line !

  • I got my first copy of "Summerside Of Life" (used) in the early 90's at the time it was very hard to find, as was Old Dans Records . Its awesome to see Gordie promote these songs live and in his prime!!!

  • No doubt that this is phenomenal ! What an incredible version of Summerside of Life ! I couldn't believe it when I clicked no here for the very first time and heard the guitar riff opening Summerside of life ! Been a fan of Gord's since '74. Seen him quite a few times . Thankks for the awesome post ! R.I.P. Terry !

  • Wow!! This concert video just blows me away. I have been a huge fan of Gordon since the early 1970's and just can't believe my ears. I saw him at Ravinia in Chicago in the mid 80's and it was the best concert of my life, sitting under the summer night sky with all of the stars out and singing along with just about every song he sang! Just a beautiful artist....

  • Three times straight through and I am still in heaven. And it is NOT nostalgia! This is superb. Lord, I'm geezing...

  • @W2n1dowsx before my time , BUT, if i need a gordon lightfoot concert fix. ive got a WHOLE onehere :D

  • This is astonishing in its' quality. What a singer and writer and what musicians. Straight live recording...Lightfoot is soo underestimated.

  • With all due respect to the late Terry Clements (who was with Gord the majority of his career) & I loved his playing dearly, Red Shea was still the Best! It was Red's lead guitar playing that truly helped to launch the "Gordon Lightfoot Signature Sound." Even though Gord says today that the original version of Trilogy is not his favorite-it sure is mine-thanks to Red Shea's innovative guitar leads, et. al..

  • Terry was a good fit for Lightfoot's later material, but Red Shea's masterful licks laid the foundation of an acoustic legacy. With all due respect to Terry, Red will never be replaced.

  • @abeerandasong my opinion i partially agree. the man that replaced terry recently almsot seems to combine terry and red. ALMOST. each musician is his or her own person. this was amazing though i must admit

  • This is some of the best live footage of Lightfoot in existence. It showcases him in his artistic prime. Thank you to bensisko16 for these uploads. Rest in peace Red Shea and Terry Clements. Lightfoot was privileged to have worked with those two amazing guitarists.

  • This is wonderful...thank you!

  • Aphrodite’s winning smile had won my heart for just a while her loving song did seem to trace that glory in the human race where love enduring does imbibe on songs the minstrel sang his bride but love in all its mystery had fled my soul externally and left me there to contemplate if love got lost while coming late while those small bitts of love’s remains cast from the oceans of my brain seem tumbled now upon the shore the beach where I had been before in dreams forlorn
  • Thanks so much for posting these beautiful memories ...these are tapes our family will cherish.

Watching my dad (Red Shea) playing will bring a smile to my face everytime I watch this.

  • @elltoft Your dad's playing is an integral part of my musical soul. As an ardent Gord fan from the earilest days, I learned guitar by mimicking (or trying!) your Dad's leads and muscicality. I know every note he ever played on Gord's tracks by heart, I think... he was one of a kind and the symbiotic relationship between Gord an Red created a sound that is instantly recognizable. Terry was amazing too, and may his soul rest in peace, but your Dad layed his foundation . Rob

  • @nylawyer55 well said sir well said

    Aaron

  • @elltoft so when he made mention of reds wife giving birht to an 8 pound baby boy was that you?

  • @yamahonkawazuki Actually he mentioned Ricks wife giving birth and shook hands with Red the "FATHER" lol This is truly a great great concert!!!

  • @tdhjim1 ill be damned lol

  • @elltoft ...wow! I saw your dad with John Stockfish with Gord back in 1968 I think, at the Oromocto high school, here in New Brunswick. Just as Black Day in July was hitting the charts. Red was a great player. That's how I learned to play, listening to those tunes. :)

  • @daveynight I also saw them at the Troubadour in LA the same year...it might have been '67. Great memories!

  • @elltoft GOD bless that man. was before my time. i had picked up on gordon when terry was in. GOD rest both their souls. botherwere great. your father was a genious

  • @elltoft - yip saw them all in Belfast, Ireland - many fond memories

  • @elltoft i HAD THE PLEASURE TO SEE YOUR DAD JUST BEFORE HE PASSED A GREAT MAN.

  • @elltoft Red was a real key to the band. Great music & memories! We have a cottage in Ontario and it ain't vacation until Gord is on the box! Break out ol' dan's records!!!!!

  • The Absolute Best Gord Video that has ever been posted! It is a real treat to see him once again when he was really smokin. I have seen him in concert around 40 times over the years-the first time May, 1970 with Red Shea on lead guitar. The last time October, 2010 with the late Terry Clements on lead guitar. He IS and will always be: The Absolute Best of the Very Best! Fortunately, I have all of the the very rare stuff in my personal collection.

  • I can't add to anything anyone has said here. GL, the greatest ever. Thanks for posting this, you are generous in doing so.

  • TERRY CLEMENTS -DEAD AT AGE 63 DUE TO A STROKE(FEB 2011),great musician and friend to canadian music, great friend to gord and rick-peace to you all as we come to terms on this unfortunate place of events...

  • the prime before the failure-booze brought this master to a sheer hell, but after time trial and tension he arose, only if he had stayed away from it,what would have transpired from this genius and his masters of music(red and Rick).RIP red shea and Terry Clements.....

  • @TheFiddlerforlife Terry Clements? I saw him at the concert in Champaign IL just last year... what happened?

  • What a treasure...wish the entire concert video was available to purchase. Thank you for posting Bensisko16.

  • No one can match Gord's vocals as a young man in his prime. His brilliance as a songwriter is equally amazing. Love this video - seeing the tightness of the band, all young men with so much ahead of them. And Red Shea on lead guitar too...who can beat that? Thanks so much for posting this!

  • great concert! thanks for posting.

  • Maestro excepcional.

  • This is so awesome. I haven't seen Lightfoot play like this anywhere. What an era this was. I met Lightfoot the summer of this very year at the old 'Riverboat' in Yorkville Toronto. Those were magic years, Lightfoot writing hit after hit after hit. I played all his music on my guitar back then, raised my kids listening to his music. Thank you so much for posting music from such a great composer and Canadian.

  • oh, so many of these he doesn't sing any more This is wonderful, thank you!

  • probably my favorite lightfoot era. what a treasure this is.

  • Hit, after hit after hit...truly remarkable. His vocals were clean, crisp, and studio-quality. He hits every note without reaching or searching for the right pitch.

When they recorded the Canadian version of: 'We Are The World' (titled) 'Tears Are Not Enough' apparently Gordie just walked in and nailed his part first crack....I'm not surprised. Other than Anne Murray no one else could on their first take.

  • I will knock out the first person who clicks "dislike".

  • This is a treasure! Pure GOLD to a Gordon Lightfoot fan. Gordon is the best ever, still performing at 72. Going to see him perform again in 3 weeks. Long live Gordon Lightfoot.

  • What a great joy it was to watch this on BBC 4 last Friday. There is never any Gordon Lightfoot on British TV so to see this classic 72 concert was really something else. Saturday Clothes was just awesome, Lightfoot at his all time best. This show should be put out as a DVD and why not........

  • @coracleman I just bought this concert on DVD through Ioffer. It is a great concert and I just love seeing Gordon in his prime!

  • Brilliant !

  • Doesn't get any better than this.

  • Simply amazing....

  • Excellent show by excellent artist-still THE best. Thanks for sharing!

  • The absolute best live concert of Gordon Lightfoot ever seen- period- bar NONE!! Gord is the best who ever singer/songwriter/performer combo of all time!! No one else close. I'm privileged to have first met and seen this great talent in 1966 at the Riverboat Cafe in Toronto and have seen him in concert and talked with him many times since. He's also a really nice person. THANKS SO MUCH for posting!! :-)

    Jerre Haskew

    The Cumberland Trio

  • @hitman9900 I can't top that post, but I would if I could..I fully agree, GL IS THE BEST!!

  • WOW.... Thank you for posting this. Incredible!
