@iamturdrocket87 you don't know very much about biology do you? Bacteria "reproduce" by binary fission (essentially splitting themselves) and thus have no gender. Most organisms you're thinking of do reproduce through sexual reproduction and thus have gender. In general, sexual reproduction is better than binary fission because the former results in more biodiversity by creating a new gene set in the kid.

On a side note, Asari looking female is probably a stab at homophobia by Bioware :D
