the productiion codes were aimed more at anything considered sexual in nature, at least as far as cartoons were concerned. If smoking was a no-no, then why was smoking shown repeatedly in many cartoons up through the 1960's? I remember seeing smoking many times in cartoons like loony toons (bugs bunny), Tom and Jerry, and disney too.
This is yet another LIE being circulated about these cartoons being "banned" for no reason.
There is noting questionable other than seeing BETTY bend over when she goes to the door. That was not censored then, so there was no, nor has there ever been any "banning" of this cartoon. What is the poster's real name, "Chicken 'Chit' Little"?
@RayPointer It was not banned for betty bending over but for the candle Cigarettes of the Pumpkin faces. Even more stupid reason for banning it but's true.
@Saiyasha27 I did not say the cartoon was "banned" for Betty bending over. In fact my point was that the cartoon was not "banned" at all. The candles bit had nothing to do with it either. This is an historical point referring to when Jack-O-Lanterns had candles inside for a light source, and this was a visual gag. There are plenty of films with real humans smoking cigars and cigarettes, and these are not banned. The same here. Let's stop spreading these silly lies and enjoy the cartoons.
@RecordKing44- It was probably band because when Betty lit the jack-o-lanterns it looked like they were smoking with the candles hanging out of their mouths :(
There are no cigarettes in this film. Betty Boop cartoons were banned between 1941-1943 because she was considered too riske' for the times. The beginning where she flashed us the moon and her crotch was the reason, plus her wardrobe was considered too suggestive. The context that a bruiser wants to assault her was also too strong for the females of the times. You can assimilate her to Mae West. When BB was re-released in 1943, you will notice her dress and mannerisms were changed.
@notymilf I believe you made a typographical error. You are referring to the period of 1931 to 1933. These films were not "banned," but some were censored in some states, and eventually came under scrutiny when The Production Code came into effect in 1933. From that point on the sexual innuendos were removed. These are the facts.
This is OFFENSIVE! I'm GLAD they censored this! (goes back to reading my Bible that has warfare, genocide, incest, slavery, racism, human sacrifice, and everything else...)
Oh no. A bird drank some beer. Oh no, Betty showed her underwear. Oh no, a gorilla showed up. Can't be having that. Gotta ban the episode because stupid people might get the wrong idea.
@strttunr69 There was no television in the 1930s. Therefore there were no cigarette commercials. There was plenty of billboard and magazine advertising for them, however.
do u all not understand that back in the day certain stuff was not allowed to show on tv unlike today, it seems like this should not be baned but i bet living in 1933 u would think differently
i love how something as simple as walking to betty boops house can entertain me. srsly 15 and still love this stuff, i don't know whether to be proud or ashamed that i love old cartoons.
Ain't that some shit? Banning cartoons for cigarettes, but adding extreme violence to today's cartoons, and promoting them.... FUCK THAT! I miss the old days
@Hiph0paddiction If anything todays cartoons are dumbed down to such rediculous levels it hurts. Anime's are censored for featuring guns and cigaretes or suggestive nudity. Take a look at betty boop here. She's sexually suggestive but the cartoon still aired. Take a look at tom and jerry. It featured guns, knives even hatchets and nothing was ever censored. I grew up on old cartoons even if I'm not from that age but there's nothing wrong with me. Parents should look for problems at home first.
@winnetouch It's not the cartoons so much that are "dumbed down," but the people making them who are "dumb." To be fair, it may not be their faults completely if they are the result of a "dumbed down" educational system.
@Hiph0paddiction Im 24 and I remember watching Speedy Gonzales and I saw no Mexican racial stereotype, just a funny little mouse who runs fast, virtually invincible and is a womaniser (all rodents breed like rats). Nothing wrong and totally harmless.
Banned because cigaretts and the beer? Dude, there've been episdodes where they had cigarettes on the floor. Also, in a Alice in a Wonderland episode, the "cure" looks like a beer mug.
@TheSprinklez124 Betty was created for theatrical cartoons in the 30s, for adults and kids both to see. But having grown up with her, I never noticed her sexiness until I noticed sexiness in general at puberty.
@TheSprinklez124 Why do you think that cartoons like this are children's entertainment? It's not your fault since much of the public has been so brainwashed by the Disney domination. But their current product is not so innocent.
@OmgKCool They continue to do so. Since cartoons were featured in Men's magazines like PLAYBOY, it needs to be understood that cartooning is not strictly a juvenile medium. There were actual pornographic animated cartoons made in the 1920s that were far more imaginative than what has been attempted in recent years. So Animation is just as much of a serious medium as live action films, which are thought to be geared towards adults, but don't always these days.
fuck if you dont like it then dont watch it my kids and i watch all the time so dont complain so what if you and if you dont mind my kids will keep watching it cause its what i grew up on
@garyswoman1914 First of all, pardner, you need to communicate here with civility. If you bothered to read what I have been saying, you will have seen that I have been defending this issue all the way. So there is no need for that tone. If you are going to take someone on in a discussion, you'd better know what you are talking about and who you are dealing with. That way you won't embarrass yourself before the world.
@garyswoman1914 P.S. Pardon my confusion if you are a "lady." But when you come off as a sailor or truck driver, the confusion over your gender is only natural.
betty shows her ass and the ending is racist. you know, the whole king kong thing... white purity and black scary. it seems nothing was immune during this time with racism. black people were still being lynched long after this series ended. god bless our christian nation.
@tomitstube I think "our christian nation" is why there is so much hate.
And King Kong wasn't racist. People love to make themselves feel like good people by accusing others of being bad people. The main way they do this is by seeking out normal things and calling them racist.
Its the same thing with "hate crimes".
What everyone should do to be anti racist is treat everyone the same.
@grendel2900 ~ i agree with your sentiment but the problem is this country is deeply racist. both overtly and covertly. back in the day it was widely held that african americans were less human by a large majority of whites. the racist (innocent or not) overtures in this cartoon are obvious. in 1948 whites in the army by 80% were against integration with blacks and jews. 15 years AFTER this cartoon. the "christian nation" comment was sarcasm. i'm an atheist. i don't believe in a god.
@grendel2900 ~ i agree, a real gorilla isn't racist. tell you what, look up some videos on gorillas and scroll down on the comments. if that doesn't convince you, then you don't want to see the truth.
@tomitstube Okayyyyyy, so a few 21st centry mouth-breathers on the internet are dumbasses (eep in mind that these people skipped over the 20th centry and named the year 2000 the twenty first WTF??).
How does that make a 19th century cartoon racist because theres a gorilla in it?
@grendel2900 ~ because it is. look, i wish everyone thought like you, don't change speaking of "skip over", you haven't mentioned that i mentioned betty was doing a showgirl thing too. bb was originally an adult cartoon. they did some really cool political stuff too.
there are a lot of subtleties you aren't picking up on. it'll come with age. unfortunately.
@grendel2900 First: *Century, *keep, *twenty-first. Second: This is not a 19th Century Cartoon. It was made in 1933, not 1833. And it IS the 21st Century. The 1900s were the 20th Century. This is how it has been for centuries. Don't believe me? Either go back to school or go look it up.
So by my methods of deduction, you are one of those "21st Century mouth-breathers" that you yourself mentioned.
@grendel2900 Actually just one. *Centuries. I am a little sad for you because you did not know how many words you misspelled. Ahem. If you re-read the comment that I replied to, you will see that the way it is written makes it slightly nonsensical and difficult to understand. So one should be able to see where I might have misconstrued your original meaning.

@tomitstube There are no "racist" overtures in this cartoon. You need to look at it again, if you haven't already. As for bringing in the "Christian" aspect, that has no application here since the cartoon is secular. While the Fleischers were of a Jewish background, they did not practice the faith, with many of their offspring marrying Christians. This sort of mixing of cultures, ethnic groups, and races is, and has been a part of American since its beginning.
The reason the cartoon was banned was because of obscenity - watch at exactly 3:07 when Betty Boop answers the door. She bends over and there is a series of cells, one of which Betty is anatomically correct. This was a running gag by Fleischer's animation artists. In some of the cartoons, it's really blatant but the censors rarely, if ever, caught the jokes.
@Sonoraman The cartoon was not "Banned" for this. However, such things were on a forbidden list once The Production Code came into being the following year.
@JohneRebel01 its not racist its made by black people drawn by a black person and theyre making fun of not only whites they re making fun of blacks the most come off that racist shit bruh its 2010 boondocks is the shit plus back then its was like all fucked up for women to show to much of anything this cartoon probably doesnt offend anybody now a days
McCarthy was right in the 1940's and in the1950's and McCarthy is still right today in 2010!! Any person who states that McCarthy was not telling the truth is 100000% wrong period! McCarthy was a great man indeed! A++++ The left wing and or liberals will always hate America! If you don't like America and if you do don't like Capitalism then you need to move out of America now and move into a communist or a socialist country!
That could probably be one of the reasons this video was banned. I'm guessing it was because they thought the candle lightings were a subliminal message about doing drugs or smoking. And the bird from the clock was also drinking beer. So those reasons are probably why this video was banned.
here r all the resons i thinky it waz banned :when she goes 2 da door, they drink beer, when she puts candles on the pumpkins mouths makes it look like their smocking, and i think the demon magic or somthin
@wwfan1234 I agree. These cartoons weren't banned when they first came out, but over time they have become banned. I heard somewhere that every reference to smoking had been omitted from looney tunes, unless it was an antagonist who smoked.
These were not banned, I know eldery who seen these in their days many, many times. Clearly these poeple want attention on whomever is posting this BS. People were more open about their sexual habits as much as now.
@NamiNeko888 In a way yes, in other ways not quite. They were more discrete and subtle about it. Today, people are too blatant about it to the extent that it's boring and frankly more offensive than any of this material, which was clever and imaginative.
@peeetrusss Ii was banned because we can see her panties at 3:10. If you watch later betty boop cartoon, you can notice that her dress is a bit longer...

If you re-read the comment that I replied to, you will see that the way it is written makes it slightly nonsensical and difficult to understand. So one should be able to see where I might have misconstrued your original meaning.

First: *Century, *keep, *twenty-first.

Sonoraman 1 year ago
@Sonoraman The cartoon was not "Banned" for this. However, such things were on a forbidden list once The Production Code came into being the following year.

McCarthy was right in the 1940's and in the1950's and McCarthy is still right today in 2010!! Any person who states that McCarthy was not telling the truth is 100000% wrong period! McCarthy was a great man indeed! A++++ The left wing and or liberals will always hate America! If you don't like America and if you do don't like Capitalism then you need to move out of America now and move into a communist or a socialist country!

great animation!!!! why in hell would it be banned??

I think she was a mite scantily clad for the kiddies, with the microskirt and garters showing. These cartoons appealed to the adults.

@skinnskallenOi
That could probably be one of the reasons this video was banned. I'm guessing it was because they thought the candle lightings were a subliminal message about doing drugs or smoking. And the bird from the clock was also drinking beer. So those reasons are probably why this video was banned.
Fatexscene 1 year ago
Can't be. So many cartoons in those days had smoking and drinking. Look at Pinocchio for example. There were kids smoking and drinking!

here r all the resons i thinky it waz banned :when she goes 2 da door, they drink beer, when she puts candles on the pumpkins mouths makes it look like their smocking, and i think the demon magic or somthin
wwfan1234 2 years ago
@wwfan1234 I agree. These cartoons weren't banned when they first came out, but over time they have become banned. I heard somewhere that every reference to smoking had been omitted from looney tunes, unless it was an antagonist who smoked.
MagicTGman 2 years ago
These were not banned, I know eldery who seen these in their days many, many times. Clearly these poeple want attention on whomever is posting this BS. People were more open about their sexual habits as much as now.
NamiNeko888 2 years ago
@NamiNeko888 In a way yes, in other ways not quite. They were more discrete and subtle about it. Today, people are too blatant about it to the extent that it's boring and frankly more offensive than any of this material, which was clever and imaginative.
