  • G1 X is Powershot G6 knockoff! Sadly, the Powershot G6 has a much better lens, f 2.0

  • Does anybody else think this looks almost identical to a Nikon p7000. Just sayin.

  • @DJFADERAL Maby you failed to notice that the Nikon P7000 looks very hard to a Canon G12?

  • If only the "manual" controls had included the "Zoom" as well, this would have been a winner for me!

  • This thing looks sooooo reminiscent of a 1970's plastic Yashica camera that Grand Ma gave you as a Christmas gift. Why didn't Canon actually hire a real designer (Porsche would have been a good choice) instead of doing all their "Consumer Studies" using Super 8 home movies from the long gone past?

I'm disappointed! I've been waiting for this to come out for 6 months, but I guess I'll have to go for the X10.

  • fujifilm x10 just met its match

  • @Rationalific Why would a photographer with a DSLR want a compact camera.? Not to take portraits or shoot sports or birds in flight . It's to have something light and portable to carry around in everyday life for something like street photography or for travelling while backpacking etc. 18mp 600d with 24mm, by cropping you have nearly 50mm with the 14mp G1X. A zoom up to 112mm isn't that great. The sensor is not much bigger than micro 3/4 and they're much smaller and some have f1.8 lenses.

  • @mucalinda Now, you're getting on to other topics. My response was that a 600D is significantly larger and heavier, even with a prime lens, than this camera is. There is no way that you'll ever be able to fit your 600D even with a prime lens into a pocket. This camera is doable...with large pockets.

  • @Rationalific No, I simply said it was huge for a compact camera.you're the one who went into great detail about how DSLR owners would want this. I was just responding to your points. Many of the micro 3/4 cameras are much smaller and actually have faster lenses. I like Canon and am willing to wait to see if the slightly larger sensor produces significantly better results. But I was disappointed as I really do want something smaller with something approaching APSC size results. We'll see.

  • @mucalinda You're wrong, and the comments prove it. Just go back to the history of our conversation, and you can see that your first comment was "It doesn't look that much smaller than my Canon 600D and 24mm prime lens.", and then I posted about how it's significantly smaller than the Canon 600D. It's not comparable in size at all. Even another commenter said the same. I NEVER said that DSLR owners would want this. If I did, please quote my comment back to me.

  • @Rationalific Sorry . Mixing you up with the first person who commented on my posting.

  • @mucalinda No problem.

  • Only 4x zoom? Make the lens removable and they would compete directly with the Panasonic GX-1 or the Olympus pen series... I wonder why this isn't at least a 15 to 20 x lens.....

  • @wmmiles "I wonder why this isn't at least 15 to 20 x lens.."

You really want a 16mm - 400mm on a relatively large sensor camera that's meant to be compact?? I would actually have preferred if they went the other way and offered a sharp normal lens at 1.4.

  • @wmmiles 15-20x is pretty much impossible for a camera with such a large sensor. I'm not sure about the math that goes into this, but I think that with a sensor 6x the size of normal G-series cameras, the lens would also have to be 6x the size. That's why you can see a small sensor SX30is (what I have) get up 24-840mm (35x) zoom, but if you try to get that on a DSLR (or any camera with a comparable sensor size), well, it just won't work.

  • As requested key features have been added in the captioning. Due to strict time constraints with the camera we were unable to relay this information at the time of editing.

  • looks really good, I'll be interested to see if a 5DX follows in the next few months?!

  • Any mention that the sensor is 6 times larger than that of the other G series cameras? Nearly 80% of APS-C DSLR sensor size?

I didn't hear any mention of that. And that's why your short previews need to change. You're not giving us enough information.

  • DAMN IT! if canon had this out 6 months ago, i would have bought it in an instant! i kept hoping for a G12 with an APS-C sensor, and this is 98% there. argh!

  • @bluepowder7

No, sensor in this is 20% smaller then that of Canon DSLR's. But indeed, it is much better then anything that came out so far regarding compacts with big (er) seonsors.

  • @Redzo79 yes, i do realize that the sensor alone is more than just 2% smaller, but i meant that the overall package is 98% of what i wanted when i was playing with the G12. better lens, better sensor, same semi-compact package, etc. it's the "diminishing returns" rule in effect. just making it much bigger than G12's sensor is a huge improvement, but stretching it another 20% to APS-C is then just an incremental and small boost, all things considered. :)

  • Why bother???

  • there's a lot of X's now.. panasonic, fujifilm and now this. >.<

  • I read it as Canon GX1 at first and I got pretty confused for a second. Cameras and their silly confusing names.

  • It looks huge for a compact.

  • @mucalinda

It's a pro compact, a compact camera that ends up in the bag of someone owning a DSLR. See the DSLR/SLT/System cameras have easy accessible controls. Directly allowing you to switch to P/A/S/M modes or set ISO.

They also want that of their compact cameras... guess what there it is

  • @masticina It doesn't look that much smaller than my Canon 600D and 24mm prime lens.

  • @mucalinda

Well lets wait for the reviews and specifications. We shall see what this camera brings

  • @mucalinda Well this one IS smaller and weighs less. It (including the lens) weighs 534 grams. The 600D, without lens, weighs 570 grams. With the lens, it's obviously more. You forgot to mention that a 24mm prime lens is not comparable to a 4x zoom lens. So when you put your 4x zoom lens on your DSLR, come back and compare again.

  • @Rationalific Your right, a 24mm prime lens is nowhere near comparable to a 4x zoom lens. Thats because any prime lens of any focal lengh would blow this shit box out of the water. Its a proven fact that prime lenses are far more superior optically than any zoom lens, be it on a compact or DLSR, and being a prime lens owner I see the difference everytime I press the shutter button. Zoom lenses are merely for convenience.

  • @Rationalific although it is much smaller than a 600d with a 24mm prime on it. I don't know what mucalinda is thinking.

  • this looks great , small and compact

  • This is one to look at
