Marcus?

  • I WANT IT!

  • @boardskins I GOT IT! :-)

  • When do you go into production? Sounds like a great instrument!

  • Two days ago, I found out that someone are using the sound from this video, in a track that he is selling at several sites at internet i.e. itunes, last.fm. amazon.com and many more sites. This he have done without asking me for permission. After I found out, I told him that I really do mind.

You should allways ask the owner of a creation before using it commercially!

    Do anyone agree?

  • @maxbackstrom Just my opinion as someone who uses sampling: I think it is okay if it is changed so that it is not really recognizable. But obviously it was recognizable to you so you have a right to be upset by it.

  • @sweeterthananything Yes it contains all that is said and played here, so it's recognizable for sure.

  • @maxbackstrom That is unfortunate. I'll be honest and say I understand the motivation to use this as "found sound" because it's very aesthetically pleasing but I wouldn't because it isn't really found sound, it's another musician demonstrating something he has worked hard on and it's only 4 years old. I have been thinking about the ethics of "found sound" a lot. I hope he has respectfully responded to you and that he is more thoughtful about this sort of thing in the future.

  • @sweeterthananything As you say this is no found sound and it's strange to use as a background but at the same time the only thing that makes sence in that track. Nevertheless he has been acting when I told him to remove that track from internet.

  • @maxbackstrom For too long we electronic/experimental musicians have been telling ourselves that anything goes. Like with found cassettes, intercepted radio transmissions, recorded conversations, etc. and too often it more represents a lack of consideration and in a case like yours, laziness. I think there needs to be some kind of ethical theory and practice that acknowledges the problems with literal copyright law/intellectual property and instead focuses on being fair and considerate.

  • nice job, it'd look even better if you put some filler in all the joins and screw head dimples...for a smooth finish.

  • @metamaggot That could be nice. I'll see if I will do that.

  • I am so impressed, (and that's hard to accomplish). Especially admire your homage to the nuances of "heritage". We have things in common, and thank you for

    "an admirable" contribution.

  • @audiomez Tnx for your comment!

  • Awesome idea!

  • Any digital sampler can easily reproduce these sounds, the resolution on most samplers goes way outside the range of human hearing so it's impossible to tell the difference, it's just nostalgia speaking. I expect flute, chello and choir singers were just as hostile towards the mellotron when it was invented!

  • Fedt : )

  • Very, very cool and it sounds great. Did you keep the 8-second limit?

  • Absolutely! When making music I try to play (as intended) an octave higher and back again, if I want more than eight seconds.

  • SOunds Great! Thanks Leo:)

  • That is very wonderful. - and the essence of human creativity. I really, really enjoyed this video. Isn't it interesting that instruments from the past, although perhaps outdated in terms of technology, seem to carve their own niche in our musical perception. I'm thinking of the mellowtron and also the 1933 invention of Laurens Hammond. Again, very fine work.

  • @karlmahlmann

Thanks for your thoughts. The Hammond is also a great sounding machine!

  • Wonderful sounds....very well done!

You did a GREAT job man!

  • how cool thanks leo

  • Very familiar soundz! Like the background musik in those old grainy films from the 60's and early 70's

  • That is very, very cool.

  • Man this is so wonderful...very well done.

I admire you greatly...my band would love one of the little Magitron cabinets.

Would you be agreeable to maybe constructing one for us.?...we would pay you of course...just let me know

We love this video you made...its actually a very emotional piece as your love for music comes shining through.

    Best of luck

  • @GOLDFINGERFOX

Thanks for comment. I love music and I like my Mini-Magitron.

The cabinet you have to build yourself to get the right size to suite your midi-keyboard and laptop-computer. Have you seen the scetches I've made at my homepage?

  • the strings are so realist! better than a synthe!! amazing sounds!! I want it! txs for the vid.

  • nice job! I love the idea of an M400 style enclosure for my midi controller. do you have any tips regarding the building process of your Mini-Magitron? how did you make your measurements and approximate the relative appearance of the original Mellotron? any advice is highly appreciated!

  • @gordrum I made a simple drawing at then tried to make it with the material I had, not wanting to buy more.

More information at my homepage max shivas se

  • Wow! That's great!

  • Wonderful demo. Always loved the mellotron.

  • sounds like very nice mellotron

  • @cuco3001 Using Vienna with a soundblaster soundcard installed in the computer

    Link in Swedish: max.shivas.se/musik/dator/sample_audigy_sounfont.htm

  • this is really the best sounding mellotron i have ever heard.. it sounds so soft and beautiful. have you thought of making your homemade sounds available for download as vst oder wav? would be awesome!

  • This is brilliant! Great job putting together your mini-magitron. Clever and small.

  • That is really cute and very inventive!!

  • what soundfont are you using to get the tones???

  • @indierickenbacker

    Homemade ones!

  • it's nice to see the how much passion for the instrument there is here

  • Wow what a great idea, you could've just use a standard midi controller with a pc but instead you made it look awesome, keep it up !

  • Thats what I use in the studio. Its a dream to have a real mellotron. This is the closest I have come yet! It's neat!

  • Very nice!

  • this music sounds lovely!

  • Maybe I should make a song with this guitar in the background and the different mellotronsounds in front?

  • I love it,, very good work. I've loved Mellotrons since I saw Genesis in 1974. I love the fact that you made it look like one,,as well as sound like one. Great job!!

  • hey jimbojasper, great reference! sorry to be so random, but isn't The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway just about the coolest sounding record ever made? ! cheers

  • @tatelabianca

It is wonderful! I love it!

  • wow! the old school of keyboard

    really magic

  • How much does it cost?

  • A laptop computer (650 MHz 1 GB RAM)

    a midi-keyboard

    m-tron

    some will

    Not that much really...

  • Really nice project!

Do you have a link where you downloaded those soundfonts?

  • No, I do not.

I made many of them by myself,.

    I can recommend M-tron by G-media

  • that is SICK man !! really good 5/5

  • Tnx!

  • That sounds beyond amazing! I salute you to the highest degree.

  • Please search youtube for mini-magitron and you will find

Its all there - a cover, played by MaxB

There you can see and here it live

  • Absolutely great! Congratulations on the completion of such a project.

  • Tnx!

    Have you seen the musicvideo?

    Write watch?v=DsUz9zU5fb0 after the youtube-address

  • Would you like to reveal what was the sample set used for this one?

  • Oh okay, I found an answer to this when reading the original forum post that was linked to this video :)

I'm still searching for a good reprentation of the strings myself.

  • You can find a new musicvideo with this Mini-magitron at youtube

    Write watch?v=DsUz9zU5fb0 after the youtube-address

  • the 8 voice choir sounds like the days of the beatles.

  • sounds really really nice.. but i think Memotron is the enhanced version of this.

  • oh please dont take the not analog part as an offence. its still really cool. and i like it and its nice to see your bringing back a long lost instrument. i happen to be a little obsessed with analog and perfect sound. digital drives me nuts, although its getting better.

  • No problem with me!

I like it when you say: - analog and perfect...

You and I, who love the mellotron, love it for... not beeing perfect

  • yeah... cept its not analog.

  • That's what I can afford...

    And there are no maintenance...

I can carry it myself - it's lightweighted...

  • yeah i like it. im just obsessed with analog.

  • How much would you charge to send actual copies of the blueprints for this?

  • I think you have to do it yourself.

  • What a splendid job. Will plans eventually be available? Very impressive.

  • What do you mean with 'plans'?

To the right you have a link to some pictures, when I was making my Mini-Magitron.

  • NICE ONE!

  • If that was sold at a store i would soooooo buy it.

  • Yeah beautiful sounds - luv that female solo voice - and hey it doesnt weigh 1/2 ton like an M400 -LOL ! - thanks for sharing your little piece of magic

  • A piece of magic :-)

You can carry it under your arm ;-)

    Weights hardly nothing.

  • Just come across this Vid.

What a great idea and just looks Excellent, well done.

I've use M-Tron as well great sounds.

Put a smile on my face for sure.

  • Yeah, it's a cute thing and the sound from M-tron is great, I agree.

  • The Mellotron is the instrument of the future.

I can remember going to Rod Argent's keyboard shop in Denmark Street back in the 80s to enquire about getting one. They thought I was mad! (At the time they were selling Ensoniq Mirages and the like.)

I'm having the last laugh now! (Albeit with M-Tron samples.)

  • Great idea. I created similar using an Akai sampler and midi keyboard but didn't build it into a case like that, as someone else posted definately better physcolgically for playing especially after using the real thing for many years. I also had the sound of the tape releasing when the sample ended or the option to loop. One thing you should have done is put the pitch wheel on then you have all, well almost oh and a proper size keyboard. Thanks for sharing this with all.

    Regards Blue Weaver

  • absofucklutely brilliant!

  • Just beautiful. You inspired me to create a new instrument. Thank you!

  • I'm happy if I can give some inspiration.

  • I'm learning more and more that the aesthetics of your environment affect creative output. Putting the laptop in a box like that will have a psychological effect of making it sound better (laptops just don't look right on a stage anyway). This project gives me extra motivation for my own effort to build a keyboard around a computer. Thanks very much mbs for sharing!

  • Truly inspirational, very well done to you. I think I shall put aside some time in the summer to do a similar project. Is there any chance you could share with us which soundfonts you are using?

  • I have selfmade fonts that I have built from recorded wavefiles. You can see a video at youtube concerning a part of the construction. Search for "Wavosaur audioeditor".

Next step is to create the soundfonts.

I have used a program called Vienna

You can get information (unfortunately in swedish) on this subject if you google for "sampla audigy soundfonts".

The easy way out is to buy a nice program, called M-tron from GMEDIA.

  • Comment removed

  • Okay. But where did you get the initial recorded wavefiles from? Did you used to own a mellotron?

  • I have not been the owner of a mellotron unfortunately. I have found some samples at "J.P. Hovercraft Studio" (use Google) and I did buy a CD (on a local musicstore-sale) that nowadays are included in the M-tron-package from GMEDIA.

Do it the easy way out - buy M-tron, it has great sounding mellotronsounds and got everything you need.

Tapeworm is free, as is Mellowsound from kvrmedia (use Google)

  • it is very brilliant! i never thought of this possibility... could you post a bit more details of what programs you are using on the laptop to get these sounds?

  • Three months ago I had the same question. Then I answered:

I think M-tron would work fine. I'm using soundfonts in my secuenserprogram, Cubase.

  • not bad.

  • Very cool! One question though. Would it not have been better to utilize a 4-octave controller with assignable buttons? That way you could cover the entire sonic range of the mellotron as well as change sounds instantly by the press of a single button. I'm sure you thought of that already, so was just wondering.

  • I'm into re-cycling i.e. I use what I allready have. In this case I've had this Midi-keyboard for many years and it has almost the same number of keys as the original mellotron. That's nice. On the other hand, I fully agree, that this concept can be done better. It's just that I'm satisfied with what I got.

  • Brilliant!!

  • Tnx!

  • Merry Christmas to all!

If you listen to this instrument, you're welcome to ask a question or give a comment!

  • This video is great by itself, it's like a spoken-word love song to your Mini-Magitron. Great job!

  • All right, right on the spot!

To me it's love at first sight!

    MaxB

  • <3 nice instrument :o)#

  • Mellotron is electro-mechanical instrument, so it is much closer to real audio-mechanical instrument than electronic instrument. That`s the difference.

  • A real mellotron sure is closer to a real instrument, such as a piano or a hammondorgan.

My creation the Mini-Magitron is only a sampleplayer, with a cute look and nice mellotronsounds!

  • great video, thanks

  • incredible

  • a keyboard with MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) can send or receive MIDI data, thus controlling (or being controlled by) another MIDI keyboard, voice module, or drum machine.

  • This guy talks too much.

  • This guy agree! ;-)

    Hi randomeddie

  • Very well done! It must have taken a lot of time to put your little Melly together. Which software program are you using with the laptop? Are you using M-Tron from Gmedia?

  • I think M-tron would work fine. I'm using soundfonts in my secuenserprogram, Cubase.

This viedeo have been here at youtube a year and more than 14000 people have seen my Mini-Magitron. I thank you all!

  • Most of us thank you too, I guess. :o)#

  • Im going to make one of these, it looks great! and sounds it!

  • Also, this is probably very marketable.

  • Yeah, some one should market this idea.

I think it could be a hit.

    Go ahead someone!

  • Well, there are keybords where you can put soundfonts on, would be about the same effect.

  • hearing it would be the same. not playing it. asd

  • What's the difference between a regular and a midi keyboard then?...

You can buy different keyboard all over, this ain't the same as a regular mellotron either, and a keyboard could be just as good as you pay for it.

  • Manikin Electronic Memotron

  • ***JEALOUS***

  • you are a true genius

  • Humble I bow

  • Geez... I just got the Abbey Road Keyboards Refill for Reason and it sounds amazing. My band USED to have a Mellotron M400 We left it overnight at the gig and THE PLACE BURNED DOWN with everything in it. I know you're not supposed to move it around much but... we did. Oh, well. The end of an era for us. Still, GREAT sound from the refills. Thanks for the post. Your instruments sounds JUST like a Mellotron. Unreal! Great job!

  • That's a fucking horror story :| I want to own one and if that happened then I'd probably not leave the house for about a year, just crouched in the corner shaking.

  • I know I was numb for about a month... We had to RUSH and buy new instruments since we had a gig next weekend. Gave us a chance to update on the technology but still, NOTHING sounds like a Mellotron. I'm talking 1980 LONG time ago. Thanks for replying.

  • @ottoelperro I'm dying to know the name of that band, as I"m pretty sure I need to hear your music, judging by your taste in equipment alone. Any chance you have any vids or audio you could post? cheers, Andy Tate-LaBianca

  • That is adorable!

  • man thats incredible you really catch the esence and the sound of the old mellotron

the sound of your magitron sent me to the years of the great progresive bands that made the mellotron famous. im a fanatic of that kind of music and i can tell you. you did it!! i will love to see much more videos of your incredible creation

    thanks you are a genius

  • this is the coolest thing ive seen in a while! im more of a synth head myself, but just listening to those beautiful tones has well and truly converted me into a mellotron fan. well done on building that too, it takes the piss out of people who buy them for thousands of pounds!

  • I love it!!! :)

  • Thank you bogatiakos, RyanX42 and beckonthethaw for your comments. Yes, I love this beautiful thing.

  • This is absolutely positively beautiful!!!!

  • Brilliant!

  • Hey awesome video my friend.

  • Thanks! I guess you love the sound! I do!

  • alfin se que pedo con esa madre, gracias .

  • I tried bubblefish for a translation but I'm not sure I understand:

alfin that pedo with that mother, thanks

  • sure sounds like a string tape mellotron

  • This put a smile on my face.

  • bravo!

  • Cool idea...

since you have hidden the computer inside (?), how do you turn the whole thing on ? Like do you have to open it and start computer and wait for it to load and then start your vst-plugin and then play or have you done anything special to fasten it up? :)

  • As you say, I open it -> turn computer on -> start VST-plugin.

You can see more details in two more videos, at youtube. To find them, follow the link "From: maxbackstrom" to the right (at the top of this page) or search for mini-magitron at youtube!

  • Sounds really awesome!

  • That is truly amazing! I too love the sound of a mellotron but I could never afford one. I wish I could construct what you have . any suggestions?

  • I'd say - Go for it!

Above, (to the right) under the text

"Here's my Mini-Magitron. " you can find a link to my creation in progress. The woodwork don't have to be to good.- The mellotronsounds you find in M-tron for example, i.e. mellotronsounds that you can buy that doesn't cost a fortune. Then you connect a simple Midi-keyboard to your computer and there you are.

    - Just do it!

  • Unfortunately I removed a message here, when my intention was to make a reply. I'm deeply sorry!

Anyway, my answer to this comment is that when ever the sound of a mellotron comes up, it's magic, may it be a real mellotron, a memotron or my little Mini-Magitron!

    I love my little babytron!

  • ur correct - it is wonderful! :)

  • メロトロンって意外に小さい楽器だったのね。

    凄く驚き!

  • Unfortunalety I can't read what you write but I understand that you come from Japan. Nice links at your youtube-page!

  • keyboards too small to play

  • Yup - it's very small - but convenient, it fits!

    And it's cute to!

  • Wonderfull idea. But does it also imitate what some people seems to like about the Mellotron: The effect of worn tapes, dirty heads and misalignment in general?

  • Unfortunately my babytron can't do more than you tell it to, i.e. my Mini-Magitron does not imitate that.

If, on the other hand you have samples in that condition, that is ofcourse a possibility.

  • Thats awesome! I would love to acquire something like that. Building one would be even more fun.

  • You should build one! Watch pictures from the process of creation. You find a a link under "About this video", above.

  • You could build a stick to replace the tone knob to mess around a bit with the tone while playing as in wah effect.

  • Sorry, but I don´t understand what you mean? Can you please give more information about your intention?

  • So you are just using your laptop and midi keyboard with some mellotron samples and putting them in "wooden box" for decoration? Are you just showing off the samples or is there some other reason why you have built the wooden cabinet? Sorry if I missed something. It sounds good.

  • That is it! I'm in love with the sound and the shape of the "wooden box" called M400. So I simply built a magical box that looks like a little M400-mellotron. Furthermore it would be nice using it on stage. People that knows what it looks like, would be amazed and people that don't know what it looks like would be curious.

  • Really cool stuff!! man I love this sound! Hwo many cost this Mini-Magitron?

  • The cost is hard to estimate. There are a computer with a souncard, a Midi-keyboard and some plywood.

  • That looks awesome, what are you using on the laptop to get the sounds? I run a copy of Reason with the Akai Mellotron sample bank, and I can get a pretty similar sound from that, just my rig doesn't look a tenth as good as that does!

  • I use different soundfonts (*.sf2) in my soundcard. Akai Mellotron sample bank must be a good one. Have you seen my MM400-creation in progress? There is a link to the right in the section "About This Video". If you like the look, go ahead and build a personal rig of your own! It´s nice to have one!

  • thyat is so cool I love the small light color cheezy looking incaseing

  • I love it to and after three months - more then 2 000 people has wathced this video.

    I think it's great.

  • Absolutely fantastic! I am 34 years old but very keen on vintage keyboard technology. This is nothing but impressive and I wish you all the best!

  • Thank you! I myself am impressed by the little creature and the stability it shows. Thanks!

  • Funky Mini-Magitron.... excellent

  • ouuhhhhhh, what a lovely little thingy you just "Invented", it really looks like a little M400. I like it!!!

Put some Water on it, eventually it grows (Only a Joke)

  • Looks like - and sounds like - what I like as well!

  • Hey man... I see your video. I did think that your babytron it's so lovely. The sounds of this instrument it's so beautiful. Congratulations.... it's make-me cry because the clearous sound... bye!

  • Yes it sounds very nice, thank you!

  • love the Magitron! I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see plans for the case ... nice work!

  • This thing is just plain brilliant. I had ordered the M-Tron a few days before I saw this video, so at least I'll have the guts of the Babytron (or Mini-Magitron). But now I'm jealous. :) I once saw a DIY project that emulated the Mellotron using a bunch of Walkmans, but this is far more elegant.

  • i seriously want one of these, especially if its more reliable than an M400 and has the same sound, bravo man

  • I think it is more reliable and do not need regular service as the real thing needs. If you have for example M-tron from Gmedia in your laptop you get a pretty good mellotron-sound.

  • Thanks for watching this video!

In less than two months more than 1 100 people have watched this video i.e. have seen my little "babytron"!

I'm very happy to meet such an interest in my modest project, the creation of a modern lightweighted mellotron. A mellotron-whannabe that one easily can carry on stage, without any help from others.

Be welcome to give your response or make a comment, if you like what you see!

  • excellent sounds!!
