yes this is a normal problem with these transmissions, it either has something to do with a faulty shifter solenoid, , or that your clutches arent grabbing and relasing all the way, so the tranny is still engaged while it is shifting, talk to gm asap thought as it still might be covered under warranty

  • thanks for the video. dont let people complaining on here ruin it for everyone. what are some symptoms of a bad valvebody? i have been told mine is bad.

  • Can this be done while transmission still in car?

  • Helpful for my S10 Truck

  • oik

  • sorry friend, I'm in mexico, I have a pontiac firebird v6 engine 3.4 whith this transmision, my trouble is the car start in second gear. this, do it is problem of my valve body??? thanks for anwser my question,, sorry for my traduction...

  • É uma pena que eu não falo nem entendo o ingles pois os videos aqui postado são exelentes sou do Brasil Rio de Janeiro .

  • Good presentation . I learned a lot .

    Thank You ,

    Jeff

  • '97 4L60E. Original (except fluid). 209 thousand miles and rising.

  • I've got the P1870 SES code on a 1999 S-10 4.3 V6. A common fix they say is to replace the valve body. Transmission works fine when cold. After 40min of driving slips in idle at a stop, then shifts hard 1-2. Looking at replacing the valve body, hope it takes care of it. 150K miles.

  • also SOlenoid not sellenoid

  • pulse width MODULATION

  • Very helpful video

  • I Have A 2004 Chevrolet : Silverado 2500 With a 4L80E Transmission When driving normally, at highway speeds I let off the accelerator pedal, the engine rpm drops down to idle rather than staying with the speed of the truck--the motor is freewheeling inside a transmission that acted more like an overrunning clutch than a applied drive clutch . In another wording, the engine was providing no drag deceleration freewheeling. What would be the fix for this Thank You Les Swift

  • great job

  • do you have to take the whole transmission out to do this?

  • @jpourkav hey budddy, I asked a friend and he said he has pu shift kits in from under his begicle, without having whole transmission removed. Im gunna use these vids to overhaul my tranny, then later use this advicce to replace with shift kit : ) I was told to LOOK AND WATCH OUT FOR check balls, but valve body is fragile too... mabye best option is to do removal and inspection in one whole go? if ur comfortable and have the area.

  • i got a easier way then doing all this to remove wire harness. at 1.56 you take the 3 bolts out that hold the round thing in the top left corner . then that comes down then you take the bolt from the side of the sensor that is blocking you from pulling the wire down then you remove the wire there is no need to mess with the valve body

  • amazing tutorial :) i will buy your dvd soon! -question, is the knowhow in the dvd applicable to japanese/korean import automatik cars engines?

  • Hi, I have a question..

I have a 01' Saturn SL2 and when the gears shift the car feels like its kicking, sometimes stronger than other times. I have to let go of gas in order for the gears to shift to produce the least amount of "kicking". Will a replacement of the valve body fix this problem? Thank You

  • ni puta idea teneis

  • What's a "silonoid"?

  • hi there i got a 97 camaro z28 the old tranny case broke and had a 45k tranny put in but now it seems like the shift points are delayed it will take longer to shift during driving what could it be? thanks

  • I just found this marvelous site about trans rebuilding. I congratulate Mr Boxwrench for these great videos unvealing secrets and mastering about automatic trans repairs. I hope you continue providing these line of contribuition to many entusiastic followers. For me the narration and close-up pointing easy to learn.

  • FUUUCK!!!! I V LOST TWO SPRINGS FROM HYDRO CYLINDER! SO WHAT I MUST TO DO ? FUCK,FUCK,FUCK ,FUCK MY FUCKING FUCK//// ok .i ll go to by new FUCKING GEARBOX. DEAM!!!!!!!

  • @pipin580001

Hi! fucker just replace anew gearbox

  • NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEXT

  • Hello; I have a 1997 C2500 chevy truck. The trans won't shift out of 1st gear; bad soleniod? How do I check where the cause of this might be? I'l put the shifter in 1st and drive truck; reach around 25-30 mph and then start to shift into 2n,3rd, 4th; still stays in 1st.

  • This is the best transmission video I've seen. I especially like how you point to the item you're talking about and, then, to the bolts or retainers. That is perfect instruction. Have you seen a good one for the Lexus GX470 (it's got a U140e transmission)?

  • Hello,

I have a 00 Tahoe with a 4L60E, I got off the freeway last night now I have to 3rd or 4th. It shifts between 1st & 2nd just fine but no 3 or 4. Any ideas?

  • @bgpimpin78 I have the same problem with mine they told me i burned up the 3rd gear clutch so what i have been doing is shifting it myself into low gear then second (cuz thats all i have lol) i have had it that way for about 8 months now n i finally got then money to get it fixed they quoted me 1,500 also adding a shift kit and corvette servo :)

  • hi i had my transmission rebuilt and now the company said the computer was bad on it should they have checked when rebuilding it

  • looks like a th350 with wires :p

  • 4L60e worst tranny ever made- 4L80-muncie-or 700r4 is the best

  • @iateurbaby

if you rebuild the 4L60E's they can be pretty dang solid. kits out there really BEEF up 4L60E's to now 4L65E's and 4L70E's...

take out the stock 6pack steel clutches and put in the 8-pack single sided kevlar clutch kit, upgrade to a larger servos, larger pump rotor kits, larger bands, bigger pistons, bigger shift pumps.. everything!

  • Can the valve body of a 4l60e be removed and replaced while the box is in the car cheers.

  • I just been looking at your website the dvd deals look pretty good i will have to get some soon cheers.

  • got a question! ive got a 5.3 chevy and 4l60 trann in my 1979 fj40.. just got a chip tuner thing an i need to select gearing. choices are "stock", 3.42, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56, or 4.88. any idea what i should choose?

  • ok im goin to be a motor mechanic before i begin my course i would jus like to ask one question do u need to be good in maths ???? im scared way 2 scared

  • PWM is short for Pulse Width Modulation, not module

  • what causes it to shift ruff out of 1st to 2nd mine did that on my 1997z71 eventually damaging the planetary's pitting and chipping the gears it now has a fresh brand new transmission and it tends to not down shift some times at 75mph i have to manual drop it down to pass people and every now and then it will down shift ruff when i floor it at 45-50mph causing a loud bang in the rear end and drive line

  • my tranny is leaking where the rod comes in to select the gears(the rod at 4:53 but not the manualk valve link) , prndl, can i fix this without taking off the valve body?, as it is connected to manual valve.

  • does any one know where i could get a 4l60e for a 1989 gta trans am with a 350 5.7 liter

  • good video, he sounds alot like that jeff foxworthy

  • im in australia and can anyone tell me if a manual overide switch for a 4l60e is avaliable over there

    thanks

  • @goddamncompsux i just shift mine manualy 1,2,3,D on the column when i want to rag on it

  • @DRNEGOLICIS i own a commodore with 3.89:1 diff gears and when i do it manually unless i lift off for a split second due to it having 3.08:1 it hits the limiter roughly 5 times before changing

  • I love how he says solenoid.

  • NEXT!!!!

  • @kakureru

You got that right buddy, shitty atx's. Nvt-350 is the way to go. better than stock mtx's

  • I love baby talk it rocks to bad the 4l60 and 700r4 is truly a big piece of shit That Gm designed!!!! To bad fuel is so expensive I rather have a built TH400 or TH350 that was made during a time where tings where built to last and you really can build those trannys to be damn near bullet proof.

  • dose anyone know if a 4l60e out of a 99 blazer will work in my 94 chevy silverado

  • nope. only a 92-94 will work for you (unless you remove the valve body from the old one and swap everything over including the wiring harness and solenoids)...

  • mine is like its in neutral when it shifts into third gear it was all of the sudden with no prior problems is there anything it could be besides the tranny is shot im told there is a small gear in the side that could be the problem... im not sure about anything with trannys lol any info would help.

  • but it does shift into 3rd? remove the valve body (don't flip it until you mark the check balls) and pull all the solenoids. you can leave the valves in and send it through a parts cleaner but i would recommend pulling even the valves and thoroughly cleaning the entire valve train. if that doesn't work you could have problems inside the tranny with...? forward sprag? something like that! sorry, i can't think off the top of my head on what else it could be... change the solenoids too...

  • 47redneck47 - Sounds like you have a bad B shift solenoid. Check the resistance I think it should be 20 - 40 ohms.

  • @47redneck47 the same EXACT thing happened to me today.. what was wrong with yours? I've read about 100 reports of the same thing online :/

  • Thanks for the info

  • do you have a video on a 4t60e tranny

  • Do you have one on the A604 auto transmission

  • @DALE97DSM there's free parking for all vehicles that have the A604 over the edge of any near by cliff or steep overhang :P

  • can i use this tranny in a 85 s10 do i have to get a new crossmember for it ???

  • Hey! if you are watching this and you work for aamco, TAKE NOTES! so you dont fuck up my transmission again.

  • @KinetikPlayground aamco is a rip off

  • @KinetikPlayground First of all I worked for AAMCO in the 70's

Just because you got some cluster fuck who worked at AAMCO doesn't mean anyone who works there is stupid.I'm a transmission GURU pal. the AAMCO I worked at is still same owner it has been since 1970 41 years. A LOT of great builders work for AAMCO, I do over 100 types of transmissions at around 2000 or more parts a unit figure that one out.

An average builder knows as much about a transmission as a doctor knows about a body.

  • @obamabasher1

im not gonna let you piss me off for responding to my year old comment. judging from ur sn and all the comments on ur page, you sound like a pissed off old fart likely suffering from erectile disfunction and beats his dog. if you want to respond i dnt log in to this name anymore so ill get back to u in a year. I dont doubt your a good tech, you just dont need to defend a shop that already has a bad name out there

  • @obamabasher1

1st of all if i wanted any lip from you id have my pants undone

2nd are you sayin your right and everybody else is wrong? is that why i won my lawsuit.

is there any excuse for loose parts, missing check balls and a warped case? they got a trans out of the jnkyard and painted it grey, yay for aamco! ill even put the shop put there, AAMCO on N. Cicero in Chicago,

  • Nice Video! You make it very easy to follow!

  • What year trans are you showing in this video?

    Thanks, Matt

  • well ive been offered a variety of 4L60E's from different year vehicles ie trucks with alos 2 wheel RWD vehicles.. but im afraid that it wont match up or the computer (electronic ) portion will not function correctly.. i have been told that tail shaft can be swapped with now issue... i was just curious of you knew what year make and models i can use on my 94 z28 LT1 automatic.?

  • hi i have a 94 camaro z28 with a LT1 engine.. my transmission is a 4L60E automatic what other year 4L60E automatic transmissions can i use? and it be a direct fitment with no issues.. ?

  • if you want to swap a 4L60E for another 4L60E you should be fine with any Chevy block bolt pattern 4L60E transmission.

However, if the new trans came out of a 4x4 that had a transfer case bolted to the transmission, you may be missing a tailshaft.

Occasionally, there are different length tailshafts between various models as well. But the main casing of the transmission should be the same.

  • @caliwood909 - BE CAREFUL, I used a LS style 4L60E with an older Vortec 5.0 series motor...Nobody knew it or told me till it was too late...but you likely need an adapter kit!!!! Its $200 bucks...CrateEngineDepot. com...Transmissions...4L60E..adapter kit. Good luck

  • @caliwood909

    94 z28 huh..

go check out the TCI 4L80 6-speed. its BAD!

mounts to most GM engines and can handle up to 850 horse, also check out the paddle shifter designed for it.

then boost your camero with about 9psi homie

  • @caliwood909 stop being a pussy and trade it out for the T-56 6 speed!!

  • I bought the 4l60e DVD and its awesome, thanks Boxwrench. keep up the good work.

  • can the wiring harness be replaced without revoming the valve body if the force fan is removed? Im getting an error code 83 and have already replaced the ecm and tcc solenoid.

  • great video... hydraulic, and basic mech skills, with common sense and patience, u can rebuild this transmission.... great vid

  • I have a 1998 3/4 ton Chevy G2500 Cargo Van. Im pretty sure it has the 4L60E tranny. The transmission shifts fine until it warms up to running temperature, then suddenly it gets stuck in 3rd gear. If I turn off the ignition, wait about 10 seconds, then restart. It will take off in 1st, but once it shifts to third it stays there. I've been told its either the 3-2 shift solenoid or the ignition switch....... message continued....

  • Just wondering if you have any experience or advice on this problem. Where is the 3-2 downshift solenoid located on this video? Thanks so much in advance!!

  • cool thank you

  • Cool..

    Les

    great vid, thanks

  • Very good

Thank you for this beautiful lesson

  • need more vids man

  • good video

  • Man, an automatic transmission is so complicated on the inside. I wish I know how to rebuild one.

  • Nice manicure. Is that a mechanic or a Hollywood actor?

  • Does it really matter ?

  • im winging it but i have keep every bold i have takin the crank shaft out and the y pipe which required a grind wheel and some prying but i did not damage anything but two bolts. They where welded. anywho now i am unsure, i know i need to get the flywheel out and take it to get grinded down but how do i get the transmission out i have a jack for the transmission. but i look like there rusty lines connected and i do not want to break those i would like

  • this is a cool start you should make a web video gallery on how to fix cars. I need to drop my 94 s10 manual transmission and i have trouble because i dont exactly know what i am doing but i have changed many other parts in the car,you box wrench to fix my ride!

  • Crap! The connector o-ring is leaking on my 4l60e and I was hoping i could just pop it out and put a new ring on it. Looks like I gotta pull the valvebody.

  • This guy saved my ass, I would BUY a video this good.

  • yea,I have to agree. I would never think of tackling this job before but this guy goes through it very well.

  • Cool. i wish all instructional vids were this good.

  • DAM WHAT A GREAT VIDEO HELPED ME SO MUCH

  • The only thing I understood was the removal of the pan. After that? Haha....... ha.. ha.... =D Nah.. I'm sure I'll learn with time and effort. I have a spare TH350 I would like to try a rebuild on. Thanks for the videos!

  • very profesional instrucions

  • oh crap. This looks way too complicated for me to learn how to do.
