The fellow that got called up on stage possibly only plays with his thumb. The 'finger only' method is fairly common from what I know, in 'proper' blues-elecric or acoustic, taught in the South. I would say it's a bit unusual to not finger pick, though. Still pretty f'n amazin'
My understanding (from his book) is that Howlin' Wolf told Hubert Sumlin to forget using the pick. If he really wanted to play with him, come back when he learned how to use his fingers-Hubert still plays that way today.
that young man was a student from the delta blues museum in clarksdale and they play good music . those young people have played at a lot of different functions and in front of a lot of people. and i agree with those that say it was kinda hard on him using his thumb for his pick just from his tone it sounded like he uses one.
What a great guy he is. The whole night was all about him, and he turned it around on a guy in the audience for a brief moment. As if the guy wasn't happy enough being at a Buddy Guy concert, he gets to play buddy's guitar!
What we should mention here is the great humbleness of Mr Buddy Guy ! He sees a boy in the audience and has the impression this boy can play... and he is right. And the boy is not in good conditions to play : no strap, holdding the guitar with his elbow and playing with the thumb on right hand. Good playing any way.
Again, not many artists would have called a young boy like on the stage without knowing him. When you know the legend Mr Buddy Guy is for blues guitar, I find awesome to see this.
buddy guy is so cool dude, i wish musicians now a days even did this shit. and running around with the audience huggin em while playin guitar and shit. come on man, no concert is like this anymore.
I just love Buddy Guy, seems like a truly nice person and as a guitar player there is no other and as a musician - one of a kind. All time favorite blues artist with Howlin' Wofl & Albert Collins for me :D
Well he made my night last May 9, 2009 in Vancouver. I stood in front of him center stage and snapped pictures. Made a comment to him and he stopped, looked down at me, grinned then went back to playing... great night! Missed his guitar pick when he through it because of the dam camera in my hand but Ric Hall gave me one later:)
I was at the same show!! Were you the blonde at the far left?? Hell of a show!!
I was standing at stage too, drumming on it with my hands along to the music. He came over and played a long note staring right at me. I felt like one of those Beattle girls! lol. It was awesome. Ric Hall is super cool.
That video put a huge grin on my face--very cool. "I wanna talk to ya before you leave." Haha. What song are they playing there before the kid jumps up, I didn't recognize it.
Buddy guy,you are an inspiration to us all,i hope one day before i leave this earth i have the chance to play along side you.I call you my second father. That must have been the greatest moment in that boys life.BIG respect to a chicago blues master!
That dude oplayed really well, but listwen to the tonal difference when Buddy picks it u, that biggr fatter louder sound, just shows how much is in the fingers and the soul when it comes to guitar, and especially blues.
I agree that Buddy's definitely got soul, but another thing you've gotta understand, the poor guy had to play with his thumb, while Buddy was playing with a pick. That definitely made a difference.
True, no doubt, but also Buddy often plays with his fingers. Thu,b gives a warmer, softer tone, but finger playing also helps give Buddy that percussive string attack, same as Albert King. Pick;s are louder, but also generally thinner in tone. I agree with you though, definitel playing with your thub makes it harder to get certain, especially aggressive, tones.
Wonder how he knew he played guitar? I wish that was me up their. Maybe it will be one day. I would love to play with B.B. King,Albert COllins,Buddy Guy,Jimmie Vaughan,John Mayer..et that would be amazing. That's one of my goals in life. to do that before I die!

Honestly, I think the guy played well and had s solid understanding of Albert King's percussive playing style.
Maybe we guitar owners should always carry a pick, just in case!
